A Dock trick NOT to try(?)

In some list of tips for Leopard I read about one that seemed useful: navigate to /Volumes/ with the 'Go to folder' Finder item, then drag the tiny icon representing it at the top of the Finder window into the stacks area of the Dock. Cool! A new way to open any mounted volume or see which are mounted. I tried it & sure enough, a stack appeared in the Dock, filled with the volumes mounted on my iMac.
Except... Things started to go wonky pretty quickly. First of all, I noticed that every volume appeared in the stack with a Time Machine volume icon. Hmmm. Odd, but no big deal, I thought. But then window focus started acting funny: clicking in another window to bring it to the front activated it but did not bring it to the front until I clicked in it a second time. A third click was required to make a text field in that window active.
Then, about the same time a Time Machine backup was scheduled, Safari (which was the frontmost active app at the time) froze. It didn't quit, it just went into 'spinning beach ball forever' mode. I clicked on the desktop & made Finder active with no problem, but I decided to click & hold on Safari's Dock icon (to see what menu item appeared) & the Dock froze: the Safari icon stuck in its Dock-magnified size; its icon in its darkened, "selected" state; with only the application name & not the menu popped out. Running the pointer across the Dock did not magnify anything else nor would it respond to other clicks.
Shortly thereafter, the Finder froze & the Mac became totally non-responsive: no crashes, spinning beach balls, or kernel panics, just a frozen screen in which not even the mouse pointer would move. My only alternative was to force a shutdown with the power switch.
To my horror, on restart progress never would go beyond the first grey screen -- no spinner, no Apple logo, no nothing. I had been there before: when first installing Leopard via the upgrade method, I had just about the same sequence of events, starting with the frozen Dock & ending with the frozen grey reboot screen. The eventual remedy was the same: reset PRAM on restart, which finally let me boot from the Leopard DVD -- not even that would work without a PRAM reset. Running Disk Utility from the DVD, I performed a disk repair (nothing amiss found), reselected my normal Leopard startup disk, & it restarted normally.
I hastily removed the Volumes stack from the Dock, & since then have had no problems.
So what I would like to know is if anyone else has tried putting /Volumes/ in the Dock & what happened when you did. I would also like to know if when you navigate to /Volumes/ in the Finder (using the "Go to Folder" item from the "Go" menu, since it is otherwise invisible), what icons you see for each volume alias the folder contains. What I see is a Time Machine volume icon for every volume except my startup one. I don't know if this is normal if Time Machine is in use or a symptom of a lingering problem I need to fix.
Thanks for your time.

I've used that trick, specifically to get easy access to my Time Machine Drive so I can shut it off when I put my computer to sleep (don't like that noisy whirring fan). Has worked fine for me except for one occasion when I mounted a downloaded DMG. It didn't seem to mount correctly and corrupted the grid for the Volumes stack. I also couldn't get the offending disk image to eject. Probably not related to your problem though.
When I look at the volumes window in Finder as you request I see a Time Machine icon and a standard Macintosh HD icon (both aliases in fact). Hope this helps.

This is especially annoying if you have hot corners for LaunchPad and accidentally open it with a full screen app open, because the Dock will not leave!  Try it: open any app in full screen, open LaunchPad with a gesture or hot corner, exit out of LaunchPad and the Dock will be at the bottom of the full-screen app, obscuring the bottow 10% or so of the screen.  Any fixes, or something to come on Apple's end?

  • X201 with Docking station not able to connect to Samsung Monitor

When the Samsung (SyncMaster 2053BW) VGA connect directly to X201, the monitor works fine.  When the Samsung VGA connect thru docking, Monitor is blank.  Why?

    hey alin0902,
hard to say why. have you tested the Samsung with another laptop that has a docking station ? does it work? or does it work only if the Samsung is connected directly into the other laptop ?
if it does not work with a different laptop that is docked, we suggest contacting Samsung for assistance.
if it does work, while being docked.. what you could do is to uninstall the current video driver of your X201. let windows install its own generic driver.
once done, dock the unit and try again.

  • Apple 10.4 managed clients dock settings not working

I  have an issues with  3 or 4 of my 10.4 clients all are managed by WGM on an apple 10.5 server.  The I have managed dock settings on all apple clients are getting the proper dock settings however I have 3 or 4 clients that are not.  The clients that are not getting the dock settings are in the correct computer group.  And I don't see any of the clients dedicated in the computer group.  And suggestions or tips would be welcome help.

THAT WORKED and all is back to normal.
By the way I did not lose any of the icons on my dock either. All the apps light up under the icon and they now mimimize correctly!!

Try deleting com.apple.dock.plist from the preference folder located in your user Library.
You can open the hidden library in Finder's menubar,  Finder > Go > hold the option key down > select Library.
Edit: you'll have to add back program icons to the dock that you moved there.

  • Dock settings not always appliying

On several of my network accounts, the dock settings I have set up in MCX aren't applying when the user logs in. I have everything removed on the user (forget exactly why I did this, instead of simply not managing the user, but I was having extra dock items appear such as SysPrefs when I didn't want them sometimes) and then I have both group and computer group settings configured. However, sometimes only the Finder will appear. It's been a while since I've actually seen it, but I get reports of "oh last week none of my dock icons were there..." Why they couldn't tell me THEN, I'll never know. When I have seen it, often logging out and back in corrects it but sometimes it doesn't.
Any clue why they would load inconsistently like this?
XServe running Server 10.6.3, 30-odd iMacs running 10.6.3 (although had the issue with 10.6.2 server/client as well).

  • Docking station not controlling iPod Nano 6th gen.

I have an iPod Nano 6th generation. When this is connected to my Teac iTB400 docking tower, not all of the remote functions will work.
Pause / Play and Stop are OK but the Up / Down / Left / Right buttons don't function.
What is the cure for this problem?
    Regards
    _Keith_

    Hey, thanks for the reply.
Just about tearing the hair out as nothing seems to work. Followed the apple suggested steps, uninstalled itunes - pc recognises nano as a drive, reformatted drive using defaults, reinstalled itunes plugged in nano - it fires up itunes and looks like it is syncing but does not appear in the toolbar.
Then I used msconfig to restart with all but apple software - this time plugged in nano on different usb port, itunes recognised nano for as long as it took to name the ipod in the first screen then it froze.
Brand new nano - feel like taking a hammer to it - or the pc.
Gonna try another pc today, will keep posting.
    Anybody else had any luck?
    Cheers.

  • Finder Icon in Dock does not open finder page

My finder ICON in my Dock stopped opening row finder screen.
I can open the page from my downloads folder in the dock, but not from the finder Icon, any idea why?

    Hello mike:
    Try this:
Drag the system preference icon off the dock. Then drag the system preferences icon from your application folder to the dock.
If this does not help, drag a preference file (com.apple.systempreferences.plist) to the trash and restart.

  • The itunes application icon on my dock does not bring up itunes.  Haven't had a problem with this in the past.

The itunes application icon on my dock does not bring up itunes.  I have no problem accessing itunes from my iphone though, so I believe it is computer related rather than an itunes issue.  Haven't had this problem before.

Does the icon in your dock look like this?

Are you running the current version of iTunes (11.2.2)?  If not, get it from here:

  • I am trying to install itunes on my pc again but keep getting an error that says'apple application support was not found. try reinstalling itunes.' error 2

I am trying to install itunes on my pc again but keep getting an error that says'apple application support was not found. try reinstalling itunes.' error 2.
We have had itunes on this pc for 2 years and recently it wouldn't open and another error message kept popping up saying it couldn't open because MSVCR80.dll was missing. I have unistalled the apple programs and tried reinstalling several times but to no avail. Hopefully my music library is not gone. Any Ideas out there?

With the Error 2, let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you?
If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • HT2509 Despite what this article states, Apple support told me not to try to remove any fonts as it could cause other possibly serious problems.  Is there a program which can be safely installed which will keep at the top of the font list those fonts whic

An article in the New York Times yesterday told how to remove unwanted fonts from the Font Book.  I followed its instructions (the same as those on the webpage "support.apple.com/kb/ht2509") and was NOT successful in removing fonts.  Despite what the newspaper article and the web page stated, my attempts to remove fonts were unsuccessful.  I use perhaps 15-20 of the hundreds and hundreds of fonts, and deleting those I don't use would make choosing a font a lot faster.  I called support and was told not to try to remove any fonts which I myself had not added to the list(I have not added any) as doing so could cause significant problems elsewhere.  The support tech suggested that there might be independent software programs which would keep at the top of the list those fonts I have used, which sure would speed up the process of selecting a font.  Anyone know of such a program, or how to safely alter the font list Thanks.

I just spoke again to tech support and this time an answer was provided that works!  Choose the font you want to use, drag it to the left, and a new "unnamed" folder will appear.  Continue to drag into that folder fonts you want to use.  You can click onto that folder to change its name.  Then when using font book merely click on that folder to open it and select the font wanted.  This tech rep also confirmed that you should NOT try to delete individual fonts as they are part of the basic operating system; he did confirm that the apple web page in parentheses above says otherwise, and will refer that to higher ups to see about removing or modifying that page.

  • Payment Processing Temporarily not available, try again later.

    Hey Guys,
I might have a solution for the folks who are getting the error "Payment Processing Temporarily not available, try again later".
If you have an active credit card and trying to purchase/register in the iTunes store this error pops up. On contacting support, they will tell you to check with the bank and they will also suggest an alternative solution for this(purchasing an iTunes Gift Card).
    My Perspective on the Problem:
The bank or the service which Apple is using to process your card is not a 24hrs service. I am not aware if the same problem is being faced in US, Canada & UK. But seeing the previous discussions on this error, most of the Apple users in India and other countries are facing this. I reside in India and I have faced this problem.
    My Proposed Solution:
Try registering your card after 9.30am GMT. I was trying to register my card all day long and as soon it was 3am IST, my card got processed and I was able to make purchase on iTunes. So, 3am IST is 9.30am GMT. 9.30am GMT must be the opening time for the day at the bank/service which apple uses to bill users. So, 8 hrs from 9.30am GMT should be the time you should try to use your card on iTunes.
Apple should take care of this.

I had this happen earlier this week - thought perhaps it was a Netflix problem.when it contined the next day, I looked for a reset button - there isn't one.  So, I just pulled one of the plugs out from the back of the Apple TV, waited a second and plugged it back in.  Worked like a charm and could now watch my movie.

  • Why do some Apps(programs) appear in my dock, but not in my launch pad?

I recently downloaded Open Office and Adobe Photo Shop 12 .  Photo shop appears in both my dock and launch pad.  However Appace Open Office just appears in my dock, but not my launch pad, and also the open office little disk or cd reader icon (white 3d rectangle with image of black slot in front) appears on the right side of my screen.  I can't eject it because I get a popup that says it is being used by "Open Office" and I have to quit the application to eject it.  My question is if I quit the application using "Command" Q and then eject "Open Office" will I loose open office and have to downlad it again?
I think I answere my question.
I clicked on the Open Office Icon in my dock, had it go to "Finder" then ejected the "Open Office" disck reader icon and it went away from my screen.
I then went to "Finder" and opened it up and Lo and Behold "Open Office" disappeared from there too. Boy that sure is crappy.
    So I downloaded it again.
Is there anyway to clean up the desktop so I don't have those silly images hanging around?

There have always, well for the past few years, written installers that just create a mess.  All installed applications should appear in Finder, Applications.  Not all of those will appear in Launchpad.  When you encounter one that does not appear in the correct way, all you can do is manually move things around so it is consistent with the way apps should work.
