A dozen iPods on my desktop

I have a 512 MB iPod shuffle 1st gen, and recently I have been having connectivity issues. I believe the origin of this is when I had my iPod plugged into one USB slot on my G4 iBook when I had a USB cable for a mouse plugged in to the other, the layout of the USB ports caused the iPod to be "off-center" in the port.
Since this happened, I have been having severe sync issues with iTunes (never had before). The main thing is I cannot autofill (a window saying "connecting to iPod", then it tells me to reconnect iPod) until AFTER i do a full restore. When I restore, it operates normally until the restore is finishing up and the computer gives me a "device removal" error. I can autofill now, and I can manually add/remove any songs I want while the autofill is still running, but it will not accept any new songs after it is done with the autofill.
Also, every time I remove the iPod I get a "device removal" error and a desktop icon appears. I now have about 12 of them due to trying several unsuccessful "tricks".
Can anyone help?
Thanks

Try using the +iPod Reset Utility+ instead of Restore in iTunes. They are not the same thing.

  • IPod disappears from desktop; appears in iTunes, but is not functional

Is it possible to fix this without restoring my iPod?
    Order of events:
    1. I connect iPod to MacBook Pro
    2. iPod appears on desktop (and finder)
    3. iTunes freezes for a minute or two
    4. Error message appears: "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod" "click Restore"
    5. When I click ok: *iPod disappears from desktop/finder*
    6. Only then does the iPod show up in iTunes, and *the only option iTunes gives is to Restore*
When the iPod appears +on the desktop, it has the name I gave it+.
But when it appears +in iTunes, it's just called "iPod."+ (Despite showing the correct serial number.)
Why does this happen? Can I fix it without restoring?

    Update:
When I try to use the iPod now, it says "*no music*"—despite the fact that it also shows *90GB in use*.
(It's been a long time since I sync'd it, so I'm trying not to lose the data about tracks played, etc.)

  • How do i disconnect a library from my ipod when my desktop won't power up.

how do i disconnect a library from my ipod when my desktop won't power up. i need to link my new laptop library to the ipod and move the music from my ipod to the laptop

This will transfer/copy music from the iPod to the computer like I said in my first reply.
    - Transfer iTunes purchases by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party program like one of those discussed here:

  • IPod appears on desktop but not in iTunes

When I connect my iPod clickwheel (via Firewire or USB) to my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.7) it mounts on the desktop and I can open it as a disk volume; but iTunes (8.2) doesn't see it at all. iTunes does see my iPhone. Restarting makes no difference. Disconnecting and reconnecting also makes no difference.
    Any ideas?

  • IPod nano on Desktop but not in iTunes

My iPod Nano (the new one, short and stubby, just released) shows up on my desktop with 'Calendars,' 'Contacts,' and 'Notes' intact but it doesn't show up in my iTunes. Both the nano and the iTunes are new, plus I just upgraded to Tiger (yes, I know).
I reset the **** thing about nine times. That doesn't solve the problem. Any suggestions?

Solved! Another post on another thread mentioned that they closed eyeTunes and turned it back on. This did the trick for me, too. Thanks.

  • IPod recognized on desktop, but not in iTunes...

I have an iPod click wheel and when I connect it, it's showing up on the desktop but not in iTunes. I have changed wires and ports and restarted...any thoughts?

Yes, that doesn't see to be the problem.
My iPod has reset itself now, wiping out all the music, and still it isn't showing up in iTunes. When I plug it in, it shows up on the desktop and opens iTunes, but does not update.

  • Ipod appears on desktop not in itunes

One day, I went to sync my ipod (2nd generation click wheel from 2004) with itunes and I ran into trouble.
My ipod didn't appear in Itunes or desktop and when I (properly) disconnected the ipod from Itunes all my music had been erased. I came to apple's site and followed the "not appearing anywhere on computer" steps.
I got my ipod to reappear on my mac desktop. But it didn't recognize it as "liz's ipod" anymore just "Ipod."
And it still won't appear in Itunes.
I've updated itunes, tried several different usb cord, reset it till one day... I got it to appear in itunes (for less than ten seconds).
I have a family road trip soon and would like my music back so any tips or suggestions would be helpful.
I honestly think it's just dead.

  • IPod appears on Desktop - enable disk use checked, greyed-out

Each of my daughters has a video iPod--
The "white" one - about 11 months old, now appears on the desktop when connected. iTunes opens, but the choice "enable disk use" is greyed-out, i.e. I cannot un-check this, and each time the iPod icon appears on the desktop.
The "black" iPod-- just a few days old, but essentially the same video iPod-- it does NOT appear on the desktop, and the "enable disk use" writing is NOT greyed-out, i.e. we could "check" this if we wanted.
How to get the "white" iPod to no longer appear on the desktop? I have tried resetting it, but that doesn't seem to change anything.
Also-- is there a reason why this appears on the desktop, and is that a limiting factor for any reason-- or a problem? Really just trying to understand this!
    Thanks for any comments.

If the iPod is set to sync manually, the enable disk use checkbox will always be on, as iTunes doesn't know when you will be done transferring content to the iPod and ready to unplug it. The iPod will appear on a Mac's desktop while iTunes is syncing it or waiting for you to transfer content to it, or when disk use is explicitly enabled and the iPod is plugged in to the computer.

  • Ipod folder on desktop wont go away

I am not sure what generation my shuffle is but it is the little one that clips on and it is purple.
I named it Lilapod. There is a folder on my desktop that says LILAPOD. When I click on it nothing happens. When I drag it to the trash, the trash can turns into an eject key but nothing happens when I put it there. If I eject my shuffle through the eject button in itunes, the folder is still there. It does not show up in the finder window as an item on my desktop. Weird. Can anyone help me get rid of it or do you have any idea why it is there?
    Thanks

If you relaunch the finder the phantom iPod folder should disappear.
You can do this by holding down the option key and right-clicking the finder icon in the dock, or by ctrl-option left-clicking the finder icon in the dock, and selecting "Relaunch" from the pop-up menu.

  • Since I installed the latest version of iTunes I cannot sync new downloads to my ipod. Before I installed this version I had two windows when I attached my ipod to my desktop but now there is only one. HELP

Since I installed the latest version of iTunes I have been unable to sync new downloads to my ipod. Prior to this installation I would get 2 windows when I attached my ipod but now there is only one. The software does not recognise the device (I tried running the doagnostic) but I can see it on my desktop. Anyone know what I can do?

  • Icons (camera, ipod) stay on desktop even after item is removed

This may be a very basic Apple proble, as I am fairly new to the Apple world and this is the first time this has happened.
When I last plugged my digital camera in to download pictures, the folder "No Name" appeared, but after removing the camera, the icon has stayed on my desktop and I can't get rid of it.
Also, I have plugged my wife's iShuffle in 3 times doing stuff, so now there are 3 "iPod" folder icons on the desktop as well... one for every time I plugged it in.
I have used these in the past without this problem. I may have unplugged them without using the "eject" feature first, if that helps any. Any ideas?

I may have unplugged them without using the "eject" feature first,
    if that helps any.
    It does help.
Before unplugging/disconnecting a digital camera or an iPod from the computer, you need to eject the mounted drive first - no different as required before disconnecting an external hard drive from your Mac. If you don't, you should receive a warning message indicating damage can (or may have been) caused to the disconnected drive.
If you have done so, this is not an Apple problem but a user error problem.
Without the camera or iPod connected to the computer, have you tried a computer restart?

  • IPod Classic 4th, desktop icon red circle with 'x'.

I've got an iPod Classic 4th, 20GB, which I use with my iMac G5. It works fine, I can add/remove music, and it syncs fine. However, whenever it's plugged in, and appears on my desktop, the desktop icon for the iPod shows a red circle with an 'x' on the screen, the same one you get on your actual iPod when it gives you the message: "Do not disconnect". It's not much of a problem, except the device didn't show in boot preferences either when I attempted to use it as an external HD in order to install panther on a partition. Any ideas what this symbol on the desktop icon could be?
    Thanks.

All you can do is try restoring the device. If you are unable to you'll most likely have to get the iPod repaired.

  • Can't move video and pix files back to iPod Touch from desktop computer

I moved (via drag-and-drop in Windows) video and picture files from an iPod Touch (iOS 5.1.1) to a Windows 7 desktop computer. I want to copy some of them back, but it won't let me drag-and-drop to copy them back to the iPod. How do I get the files back on the iPod? I know that the "disk mode" is not available on the Touch. Also, although the iPod shows up in iTunes on my desktop computer, these video and picture files (Quick Time Movies, JPEGs, etc.) don't show up there. So, I'm out of ideas. A related question: how do I scan the iPod using my Windows 7 desktop computer's anti-virus application (McAfee)? Normally, when I right-click on a device on the desktop computer, it offers me the ability to scan it for viruses. Not only does it not give me this option for the iPod; the iPod doesn't even show up as a hard drive; it shows up in the window as a separate "flavor" of drive. Is there a way to make Windows 7 think that the iPod Touch is just another USB-connected drive; i.e., is there a way to mimic the disk mode option that is available on other models of the iPod other than the Touch?

    - There is no way to scan the iPod for virus via a computer program. I know of no way to scan an iPod.
