A dropped MBP = a dead MBP

Title says all, My MBP slipped from my hands, it landed illuminated Apple logo down onto carpet but part hit a book, the rest on a blanket, it was about a 3ft fall, and yes my Mac was still on/just moments before reaching sleep.
The problem looks to be in the SMS (sudden motion sensor) it's reset time is too short. I heard the drive park as my Mac fell, but when it made impact, the drive then parked again, from the sounds alone, the drive heads may have been on the platters at the very moment of impact.
Now my MBP is making these horrible clicking and grinding noises, yes the HDD is probably toast, thank goodness for TM backups! But this shows that Apple shouldn't skimp on drives. WD or Seagate only, Hitachi disks are not up to par in G shock handling. I am going to upgrade to SSD now. I've been putting it off too long.
I'm calling AppleCare the moment they open on Monday
(I'll update as the case progresses)
Note to self- However much I wish it to be, Mac keyboard commands do not work on a Windows laptop

My Mac is back! With a Seagate hard drive this time.
The one thing that has me annoyed greatly is the fact that warranty repairs for failed Apple hardware require the Authorized Service Provider to send the failed components back to Apple. In this case my ASP had to send back the failed hard drive. Which means that 200GB of my personal photos, email, and music are potentially very easily recoverable by a third party.
What do you think about this? Is this something evil Apple is doing? Or is it to build statistics on what brands of hardware fail the most?

  • Emergency: How to best get the contents of a dead MBP onto a new iMAC?

Hi all, my emergency is all over the boards today : http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7661172#7661172
but thanks to a home delivery from the Nepali Apple store I may be back in business tonight with your help.
I have a TM backup of the dead mbp on a drive and a CCC clone on another. So the way I see it I have two options and I am wondering which one is best...to
    1) during the install of the new imac, choose "from TM backup drive" or whatever that option is, or
    2) Use the CCC clone to just clone over the imac system.
I understand, from expierence, that many software packages like Adobe need reactivation, but no problems there, I have all my original DVDs and serials.
The problems I remember from last time is preserving user settings and even the login account. I want everything to be the same (but they want ice water in **** too I suppose).
The emergency is that my biggest client is waiting on the FCP job which is now sitting on the dead mbp and the two backup drives. I am praying that the low -end 20" imac will run FCP/Motion and plugs. If it does I may pull this off by just telling the client I had to go away for the weekend:) thx...

Booting from the clone should get you "up and running" temporarily, though for the sake of preserving data I'd recommend other options first. Id start by trying the TM restore. If it fails you can always reinstall the OS "as it came" out of the box, and then try cloning the cloned backup back to the iMac. As a final resort, booting off the cloned disk would be the next option, but this will inevitably write files and such to the disk, which will alter it slightly (and most likely be perfectly fine, but there's always a chance for something to go wrong).
The iMac should run your programs fine, at about the same speed as the MBP.

I dropped my 2012 13" MBP and dinged up the upper right hand corner of the casing...does my apple care cover the cosmetic part of my MPB?

No. That would not be a manufacturing defect.  Any repair costs will be bourne by you.
    Ciao.

  • Delete Photos Sync'd from a dead MBP?

I have a collection of photos that were added from my previous Mac Book Pro (it died a horrible death).  I would like to remove them from my iPad, but they will not display the Delete icon when they are selected in Photos.
How can I get rid of these pictures since the originating system is no longer available?
    Tim

Thanks, Allan.  That cleared all of the photos sync'd from the dead MBP and it left my current images imported directly from my EOS.
That's about as non-obvious as anything I've ever run into.

  • Transfering Files from Dead MBP to Pc-laptop

Currently old 2007 macbook pro died due to the black screen of death.
Aka the faulty Nivdia shielding that leads to logic board damage that permanently fries your logic board.
Unfortunately because this didn't really happen until 4 years after I bought the computer I was not eligible for the free service that replaces my logic board.
So right now I'm left with a dead MBP.
Currently I have been told that it is possible to transfer filed between my MBP and another laptop through holding T and using a firewire.
However my new laptop doesn't happen to have a firewire port.
So are there any other alternatives to a firewire that I can use?  Either a usb to usb or an ethernet cable?
How do I go about doing this?

Yes, any USB for a 2.5 inch drive.
This is what I currenlty own.
It's a Vantec USB2 external SATA enclosure which I use for cloning hard drives.
It's pretty cheap and does the job well.
    More info here.
For what you'll be using it for, it should be good enough.  No need for a fancy one when this one will do the same job.
    good luck.

  • Broadband speed 8Mbps dropped to 0.26 Mbps

    Hi All
I have BT Total Broadband option 3. Speed was running at 8 Mbps for many months but has recently dropped to 0.26 Mbps.
Quiet line test (using my cordless phone) seemed ok, very little hiss on the line.
ADSL data (using test socket) as follows:
    BT Wholesale Broadband Performance test:
    Download 0.26 Mbps
    Upload  0.83 Mbps
    Ping Latency 58.5 ms
Please can anyone offer advice ?
    Many thanks
    Simon

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results .
sounds like your profile may be stuck or low
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?

  • HighSpeedInternet Enhanced - Upgrading from 3 Mbps to 7 Mbps

    Hi,
I currently have High Speed Internet Enhanced plan, which I'm paying 49.99/month for. My download/upload speed is 3355 Kbps / 864 Kbps, and I recently found out that my DSL line can handle up to 7 Mbps download speed.
Would  there be any cost/charge, if I ask to upgrade my DSL line from 3 Mbps to 7 Mbps? And how much I would be paying each month for 7 Mbps?
    Thanks,
    Tony

The 7Mbps plan costs just as much as the 3Mbps plan. They are same package, but are different provisioning rates. Unless you are on some really old grandfathered plan, the price should be the same.

  • Wich one best for Audio Recording using cubase and pro tools? MBP md102 or MBP md103? i often using a lot of VST

wich one the best for Audio Recording using cubase and pro tools? MBP md102 or MBP md103? i often using a lot of VST too

Well, I've been trying this for a while. By my calculations, at this rate, installing all the applications one by one and trying to restore all the data manually will take me about six years. I would finished just in time for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The main problem is, I don't know where all the bodies are buried. Just one example, I'm using Cornerstone for an svn client. I have working copies of multiple repositories on my computer. I really don't want to set them all up again, and I can't figure out where the Cornerstone preferences and all settings are stored. I couldn't find them in the Library anywhere.
    And that's just one case.
I haven't done much with my MacBook Pro yet, I think in retrospect the easiest course of action is to reinstall OS X as though it were new MacBook Pro, start from scratch, and use my Time Machine backup with the migration assistant and go from there.
And that's what I'm doing right now. I'm in the middle of reinstalling OS X.
Afterwords I'll use a clean app uninstaller application to get rid of all the applications that I'm not using. And I'll just hack away at directories that I know I haven't looked at for years, with the confidence that I have a backup both in Time Machine and in CCC and also on my iMac. That's three backups.
I would rather start out "light", but I can see it's just going to take forever and a day to get it done. Anyway, fortunately nothing is carved in stone, and I can always try again if I want to. But dealing with all the documents and all the applications one by one separately was just obviously going to take too much time.
I'll report back on my results. And I appreciate your suggestion.

  • Migration MBP Core Duo - MBP Core 2 Duo

    Hi everyone,
I need to move everything from an older MBP CD (32 Bit) to a newer MBP C2D (64 Bit). Both Macs run 10.6.3 and both share the same model of HD (Samsung 250 GB 7.200). I know that the kernel runs in 32 Bit anyway on both Macs per default and that’s fine.
I don’t need anything from the newer MBPs HD, so it can be deleted. What I’d like to know is what is the best way to migrate?
    • Exchange HDs
    • Use CCC to clone old MBP to new MBP
    • Install fresh system on new MBP and use Migration Assistant
The reason I’m asking: I’m not sure if all binaries are installed both as 32 and 64 Bit when installed on a 32 Bit Mac. So I want to make sure that the new Mac won’t run anything unneccesarily in 32 Bit when it could use 64 Bit or has a degraded performance of any other kind.
I’m pretty sure that all 3 solutions are OK and that all binaries usually are for both architectures, but I wanted to be absolutely sure before I need to do it again.
    Any recommendations are welcome!
    Björn

    Hi Björn;
My suggestion is to connect the two MBP together with firewire cable and run Setup Assistant on first starting the new MBP. It will ask you what to migrate. It will migrate things correctly for you.

  • MBP 13" Dead Pixel and Loose Keys

    Hi All,
Just had the excitement of unwrapping my newly delivered 13" Macbook Pro by finding a dead pixel (upper left hand corner) and several loose keys (TAB, SPACEBAR, and ENTER).
I tried Jscreenfix, but that was no help for the dead pixel. The loose keys are very annoying. The TAB key feels like it could fly off any moment and you can tell it's substantially looser then the rest of the keys. It doesn't have much spring and you can jiggle the whole key around by pushing on one of the corners. Same goes for the spacebar and enter key.
Anyone else have similar problems? Anyone have an opinion as to whether I have any chance of having my local Apple Store swap this out for me? I purchased the MBP at the online store. It was the stock configuration (no customization).
    Thanks in advance.
    -D

Let us know what happens, my MacBook Pro 13" arrived with a dent right outta the box! (it makes me question the quality control levels at the factory, because it didn't happen during transit).
Anyway, even thought the online store had more in stock, they said it would take 3 weeks for me to get a replacement sent out

  • Ejecting a CD in a *dead* MBP

    Hey guys
I've got a late 2008 17" MacBook Pro which had it's logic board die. It's completely dead - I boot the machine and get nothing - no chime, no screen, no boot. I've taken it to Apple and if I want to get it working again I need a new logic board. I've elected to get a new laptop instead of doing the repair.
Only problem is, I can see no way to get the Snow Leopard installation DVD that I inserted into the drive to attempt booting off a DVD.
Is there any way to eject a disc with the machine off? And, preferably, without damaging the drive as I'd like to sell it as a spare part?
I've googled around a bit but no-one seems to have any advice for this particular problem
    Joe

    Hi flukazoid,
One 'last ditch" thought without taking the drive out of the computer would be to try booting in target Disk mode, by holding down the "t" key with the old MBP attached to the new one with a Firewire cable.
Sometimes even seemingly "dead" machines will boot in Target Disk mode, and on recent ones the Optical drive should be accessible through this means as well as the HD.
(I'm assuming you have already tried simply holding the eject button down while pressing the power button on the computer).
Yours sounds properly "dead" though, so I wouldn't be too hopeful of success. Still, worth a try.
Failing this you will have to at least remove the drive from the computer. How hard this is depends on whether the computer is a unibody or pre-unibody model. The first unibody 17" models weren't actually released until early january 2009, but some people refer to them as "late 2008" models, because they were the first of the unibody models in that size and to differentiate them from the updated models introduced in June 2009. Which one is yours?
Once the drive has been removed , you have two options. You either dismantle the drive to remove the disc (see http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Jammed-Optical-Drives/772/1 ) , or you attach it to the appropriate external interface (IDE/PATA if it is one of the earlier, pre-unibody models, or SATA if it is a unibody) hooked up to your USB or Firewire ports and eject it from there. (You may be able to use the "bridge" in an HD external enclosure of the right kind to do this, if you have one to hand and don't mind a bit of temporary dismantling of the enclosure).
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Dead MBP

I have a 15" MacBook Pro 2Ghz which I acquired non-working - suspect liquid damage. However today I was testing a power supply and as soon as plugged the magsafe in the MBP's apple start up chime rang out and the sleep light came on - I pressed the power button and it cut out and wouldn't start up again. I originally assumed the logic board was dead but now I'm thinking that the power button maybe shorting. Can anyone advise me on this?
    thanks
    Troy

    Hi troy1974;
After working in IT since 1981, it has been my experience that any computer, which has had liquid spilled into it, is never worth the effort of repairing. The problems are never ending, a bit like trying to herd cats. Our solution to liquid damaged computers was to send them to salvage for any metals of value. Sorry.

  • Still suffering with dropping, unresponsive bluetooth on MBP Retina. When will this be fixed?

I am still having this problem with my MBP Retina display. I am currently typing on the keyboard on the machine because it just lost the bluetooth connection, yet again. After the message flashes up saying "connection lost" for my keyboard the bluetooth settings on my system preferences are not responsive. It drops the connection very regularly, usually at the end of the day but it's something that goes wrong with the bluetooth on the macbook because I get the same <<do not localize...Name not available>> message that others have mentioned.
What has NOT fixed this issue:
    I have reset NVRAM/PRAM
    I have reset the SMC
    I have the latest OSX v. 10.9.2
I have new batteries in two different apple wireless keyboards that have both suffered the same issue
I have switched off wifi and run from ethernet, but bluetooth still fails, it still happens.
I have searched the discussions and found many people reporting the same problem going back many months now but nobody posting a solution that works. When is this going to get sorted out?

This is still happening to me on a daily basis. I'm unable to connect to, or switch off bluetooth on my MBPRetina from Spring 2013. I get the message <<do not localize...name not available>> on my bluetooth preferences. I'm now going to restart my computer so I can connect to the wireless keybaoard. Is there nothing that can be done about this glitch?

  • Is my new MBP 13 dead ?

I have a two-week old MBP 13"; I have installed no new hardware.
Today I got the flashing question mark on start up, reset the pram, and then tried to repair the disk. The utility said the disk could not be repaired.
Well, I decided to try re-installing the OS, but the install screen offers me no disks to install it to.
Is the hard drive likely dead or am I missing something ?

Tech support confirms my hard drive needs replacing.
    As for how . . .
Tech support tells me that my local university is an authorized apple service provider where I can take my comp. That comes as news to me because it does not appear as such either on its own web site or apple's.
Anyways, I call the number tech support gives me, and I get a voice mail saying that it's the number for the director of purchasing for the entire university. Huh ? Oh, and of course she is unavailable, and her message says nothing about apple service.
My calls to the university's general information and IT numbers yielded only denials that apple service was performed there.
I call apple support back for some clarity. They have nothing else they can tell me other than "that's what the records show."
Sure, electronic components can and do fail unexpectedly. That's just a fact of modern life.
However, I don't know if my new MBP can be fixed locally and cannot know until the director of purchasing for a university is available by phone ?
    Seriously ?

  • Recover files from *desktop* of dead MBP?

My MBP died an expensive death when a friend spilled water on the table where it was charging. The display and power station area inside are dead.
A great shop here extracted the hard drive and enclosed it, and my files from my hard drive are there.
But I had some of my most current work documents on the desktop of the MBP. I can't find those on the extracted hard drive.
Does anyone know those desktop files should be hidden away on this recovered hard drive somewhere? Or if there's any way I could get them? Of course, they were the only files that weren't backed up, as they were new and I back up once/week. (that will change).
    Thanks for any suggestions.
