A Dud Battery?

Hi, got my MacBook Pro new in October (2010), I seem to only be getting a couple hours maximum of charge on it. I've set the computer so it won't waste much energy (e.g. making backlight dimmer) but it doesn't seem to help.
Here's my battery info if that's ok:
Battery Information:
Model Information:
Serial Number: XXXXX
Manufacturer: SMP
Device name: bq20z451
Pack Lot Code: 0000
PCB Lot Code: 0000
Firmware Version: 0201
Hardware Revision: 000a
Cell Revision: 0157
Charge Information:
Charge remaining (mAh): 5144
Fully charged: No
Charging: No
Full charge capacity (mAh): 6518
Health Information:
Cycle count: 73
Condition: Normal
Battery Installed: Yes
Amperage (mA): -1281
Voltage (mV): 11755

2 hours does sound like a mighty short runtime!
One factor in battery life is how you use it. Graphics intensive applications will use up battery life faster than something like answering mail. So you need to look at what you are doing.
You might check in Activity Monitor to be sure you don't have some hung up process running in the background which is using up your battery. If you do, you will also likely have a lot of fan activity.
You can also make an appointment at the genius bar and ask to have your battery tested. If they determine that it is defective, then they should replace it.
In the meantime, here is a good read on getting the most from your battery:

  • Dud battery causing error code 23?

Got an issue with a 3g:
First off it won't turn on without being connected to a power supply or a machine via USB.
Next, when power on the apple logo appears, for about 30secs, then fade and disappears. During this period it's not seen by iTunes.
If I then hold the power and home button long enough I get the plug into itunes logo. I plug it in, iTunes sees it, and says the phone is in recovery. It asks if I want to restore, if I select yes it starts the restore then gives the code 23 error.
I don't know the firmware the iphone is on, it was bought in this state.
I'm on a mac with the latest version of iTunes.
I've googled that error 23 is hardware failure, given the fact the phone won't power on without being connected I'm wondering if the battery is dud, and that this is causing the error 23.
Anyone any ideas or experience of this?
    Thanks.

    Little bit more info:
If I try to restore to 3.1.2 & 4.1 I get the error message code 23. If I try to restore to 4.0 I get a message saying the device is not eligible for the requested build.

  • MacBook Pro battery won't charge

    Hi
I just bought a new battery for my MacBook Pro (a1226). The old battery had over 900 cycles and didn't hold any charge.
Apple quoted around £100 for a new battery which is about a quarter of what the machine is worth so I decided to look on eBay for a cheaper alternative. So for £20 my battery came along and all was well and good. The new battery appeared good, it held it's charge. I could get more than an hour of unplugged action out of my machine.
It now says 'Not Charging' and when I unplug the macg safe it intantly dies.
Here is what the computer says about the battery -
Now I have followed these steps regarding restting the SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Plus I have reset the PRAM.
Now I realise I have probably bought a dud battery off eBay but surely there is a better alternative than spending £100 on an apple one?
    Many Thanks
    Tom

"You get what you pay for."
Purchase another battery, return the old one and make the time to calibrate. All new batteries for your model MBP need to be calibrated within a week of purchase and/or prior to usage.  You will need to read your manual or the KB Article.
Your other option:  If you have AppleCare, give them a call & let them deal w/it.  If not, take your MBP to your local Apple Store or AASP.  Let them properly diagnose the problem and provide you w/a repair estimate.
this involves fully charging it and disconecting the power and letting the battery run down and then plugging the charger in, letting it fully charge and keep it at that state for a few hours.
    Not quite right.

  • Battery level is erratic

Hi. I had a dud battery which was replaced by Apple at the end of January. Now after about two months usage the battery level has gone crazy!
I have the following information from Coconut Battery.
    19th January (New battery) - 100%
    28th February - 91%
    Then 8th March - 58%
    Then 9th March, I have had the following readings in this order - 60%, 77%, 91%, 73%.
I thought that maybe the battery needed calibrated and so I tried this but it did not work in correcting the problem. I have tried resetting the SMC and this has not worked in getting the battery level to be correct.
I have been trying to use this battery properly and so have been fully charging the battery and then taking it off AC power and using it on battery power till the running on backup power warning appears. Thus I have worked up 66 charge cycles.
Is there anything I can try? Or have I damaged the battery? Or do I have another dud battery?!

Hi Andrew: Have you checked the battery information from within System Profiler? There may be issues with Coconut Battery. Also I believe you are doing the worse possible thing for your battery by continually discharging it. Please see the info from Kappy in the following post.

  • Battery issue, random shut downs for no reason

Okay, so I've had a MacBook for about 3 1/2 years now. The old battery I had that came with it had clearly run out of cycles because the computer could only last for five minutes without being plugged in. But when plugged in, it worked fine.
So, about a week ago, I ordered a new battery and got a generic one off Ebay b/c the "official" Apple batteries are $120, whereas generics are around $40. I'd rather buy the Apple part, but frankly, the amount that Apple charges for replacement parts is completely ridiculous.
In any case, the battery worked fine for several days and then in the last three days, the computer just shuts off randomly with no warning. It can be plugged in or not plugged in, it doesn't seem to matter. Sometimes I turn it on and it's fine for two hours before this happens and other times it turns off in 5 or 10 minutes. It seems like it must be the battery since that is the only thing that has changed in the last couple weeks. And the display is always telling me I have plenty of juice (between 80% and 98% when it shuts off). It recognizes the battery, calculates the time left, and does not give me an "x" but shows it to be charging when plugged in.
To test to see if it was the battery, I put back in the original MacBook battery. Even though it has no juice, I could previously use my MacBook without issue as long as it was plugged in. But again, I encountered the same issues with sudden and unexplained shut downs at seemingly random intervals whether it was plugged in or not. Just a sudden click, my screen goes black, and the power is off.
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this or approach fixing it? I thought it might be an issue of a dud battery, but that wouldn't explain why the original battery doesn't work now. Any solutions? Anyone else had this problem?
Any help or pointers would be invaluable. Thanks so much.

    Hi Eloco,
Smart idea to try putting the old battery back into the machine, that was going to be my first recommendation in component isolation. Next step... reset the SMC.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
I'd say reset the PRAM but I given what is that the PRAM controls, I don't see any change in system performance as a result of resetting it.
It's possible, that the issue is with the machine (the battery is just coincidental). With that being said, given the age of the machine you're outside of any AppleCare coverage... even if you had it.
There are three areas I'd consider further troubleshooting, whether you decide to do it yourself or go the route of a service center:
1.) The battery connector (sleep switch adapter)
    2.) The MagSafe board/DC-In board
    3.) The logic board
I'd recommend in that order, as well, ironically the service parts also go from less to significantly more as you move down the list.
    Good luck!

  • FaceTime battery talktime

Hello guys! I have an iPad 4 32 GB and I use FaceTime on it everyday for hours. I was wondering if any knows how much time a single battery will last. On the Apple website it says the battery will last about 10 hours of video playback. What about FaceTime with the brightness about half way up? Thanks. Also, I'm using wifi for FaceTime.

I don't know what the claim is for the E6 or the E52 or whether the claimed talk/stand-by etc times are similar for these 2, but I can tell you that the E6 is about 1/3 of the E52.
It is NOWHERE NEAR as good as the E52 (Same battery, incidentally).
Have just done a compare of E52 and E6.  The claim is 8h talk for E52 and 37h for E6 and 552h standby for E52 and 681h for E6.
I am sorry, but there must be something wrong here.  The E52 lasts somewhere between 2 and 3 times more than an E6.  I am a heavy talker and email user (on both phones). I was so surprised at how quickly the E6 ran down I swapped batteries (thinking I had a dud battery in the E6 or maybe that my E52 had some freak 'super battery') and it is the same.
Having said that, i had an iphone 4 and it's battery life was absolutely abysmal. It would just get me to mid-afternoon before i got a low battery warning.  At least the E6 can get you through the day with plenty of battery to spare and probably will get you through a second day without a charge if you are careful. The iphone is just not comparable when it comes to battery life.

  • Battery Indicator staying at 0% for a long time?

    Hello all,
It's been a few months since I've taken out my Macbook Pro (17"), so naturally my battery was at 0%.
I've had the charger in for about 20 minutes now...(it's orange-lit), and yet the indicator still shows at 0% and 10:00 until full.
Is that 10 hours? And wouldn't it show at least 1% after 20 minutes?
    Am I doing something incorrectly?
    Thanks for any help!

Did your battery sort it self out? I just had this problem with a brand new one after running it down to zero for the first time. The Macbook Pro died while trying to sleep after the low power warning, and once I plugged in the adaptor and rebooted, it stayed on 0% (10:00) for a few hours, before finally changing to (Calculating...) and then beginning the charge. Had me thinking I'd bought a dud battery for a while.

  • Blackberry 8900 - battery discharged fully, now won't turn on, no LED, nothing!

Hi - probably a silly question that will just get replies saying - it's broken!
But let the battery fully discharge for first time since getting phone just over a month ago - plugged it into mains charger to charge it that night, screen lit up white with a battery charging symbol in middle - thought, "i'll turn it on so I can check emails etc. while it charges" and so pressed the 'on/power' button - nothing happened, screen went black, LED light went out ....
pressed a few other keys including the lock and mute keys on the very top - thinking maybe the power on button isn't the power on button after all !!! ....
    nothing happened
tried the car charger thinking the charger wasn't working maybe
    nothing happened
    tried the usb charger
    nothing
took the battery out, put it back in
    nothing!
it's an almost new phone - what's wrong with it!!!??
has anyone had the same problem - might it just be a dud battery or would the led still come on if that was the case??
going to try and get to express CPW centre after work today so want some ammunition if it doesn't really need to go off for repair - can't be without it for 10 working days!! need it for work!!!
    thanks for any help!
    J

I'd like to know if you sort this problem out. I got a brand new 8900 three weeks ago and let the battery fully discharge with the same result as you! As the phone was brand new I had it swapped for another brand new one. Guess what. . . Two days ago the battery fully discharged. I cleaned the battery terminals and it sprang into life again. Two days later -fully discharged again. Now it won't turn on no matter what I do.
Try cleaning the battery terminals with a cotton bud.
It's looking like the solution to MY problem is to go back to my old Sony Ericsson. . .

  • Nano will not work unless plugged in

    Hello.
I have searched through the help section and through the forums, but I can not seem to crack this problem.
My inlaws told me there iPod nano would not work anymore. They simply told me that they could not get it to come on. I thought I could fix it rather easy. Turns out that it isn't that easy.
The nano will only work when I have it plugged up. It says it is fully charged. When I unplug the nano, the screen dims out for a second and then goes to gray as if it were off. I can not get it to come back on however. When it is plugged in, I can navigate through the nano as if there are no problems. As soon as it is unplugged however it acts dead.
Any suggestions? I've tried resetting. Doesn't work unless plugged in...and didn't solve the problem. I've done the five r's. No problems with the hold button...
I am lost on this one guys.

I would say that it's a dud battery.
You can arrange online service here.
    Service request.
Or if an Apple store is near you, take it there and have them check your iPod.

  • Random Loss of Power

I have just got a 15" powerbook - It did have a dud battery, I now have a nice new one that charges OK and I have calabrated it...
But every now and again when on battery power the machine just looses power, e.g. if you had no battery and pulled the charger out of the side.
Is this just a case of the battery need re-calabrating?
    Cheers
    Carl

Since the same thing happened with my new PB (15" hi-res, 1.67 GHz - battery would not charge), I am wondering whether you have the same problem with the new replacement battery...
    1. the battery status lights remain on (4 of 5) whenever the battery is plugged into the AC adaptor.
    2. after resetting PMU and running the Powerbook Update (to fix battery problems in the new PBs by resetting the battery firmware), the lights are off... but, the battery capacity fluctuates (loses capacity and then gains capacity) while on battery power only.
Has either of these been your experience?
Have you reset the PMU after receiving the new battery?
Have you run the PB Update?

  • Can apps still run even if closed through multi tasking?

I'm having a nightmare. I ungraded to 4.2 and safari started not loading properly after 15 mins use. No amount of clearing cache etc solved it. I got it exchanged and had 4.2 put on in the Apple store in case my version was corrupt. New phone had same issues. Another replacement... This one had a dud battery so in last ditch attempt before the long trek to the Apple store I put 4.2 on again. Battery improved but safari started not loading again- the blue bar only reaching part way so I constantly have to refresh. I keep all not active apps closed through multi tasking, also notifications off. I'm wondering if any apps can appear closed but still run- cuz asides from a bad app, I can't understand what might be causing this. Different phones, different 4.2, and always restored as a new phone. I'm at my wits end!

Thanks so much for your answer.
Yes, I am sliding to power off.

  • Satellite Pro 6050 refuses to turn on

    Hi,
Anyone encountered this issue before? My Satellite Pro 6050 refuses to turn on.
There is no indication of activity when I press the 'on' button, but when plugged into mains power the 'mains plugged in' and 'battery charging' lights are lit. I have tried the battery in another identical laptop and it starts fine (eliminating a dud battery as cause of the problem).
Any thoughts..? Your help is most appreciated.
    Tristan

    Hi,
I think the problem is the power button. If you press it and there is no reaction, it must be faulty. So you can only go to an ASP to get this repaired.
    Bye

  • Cannot start my T21

Hi Guys, hope someone can help.
My T21 has a dud battery but will normally start and run OK with the mains adapter attached. Now, although the power light is lit, when I press the button to start the boot there is no response. The battery light does show momentarily when the power button is pressed but the T21 fails to respond. I have checked positioning of the HDD and the other connected drives and all appear Ok.
Anyone got any clues to where I should look or what I should replace to get the Thinkpad working again?
    Kind Regards

    I agree with Liam.
The indicator flashes because a serious hardware problem has been detected.
What you could do is to remove the RAM modules and test the unit with new tested modules but I guess its not RAM problem but something wrong with motherboard.

  • Msi-6390:cmos check sum error

    please help me:
    i bought a 6390-msi motherboard.
the problem is that when i start the system after checking the ram and cpu (it understand the correct cpu and the correct amount of ram) this message appear:
    "Cmos check sum error.loaded default"
and when ever i change any thing in the setup program and save the changes (for example changing the boot sequence in the bios features) the system doesnt boot again and i have to clear the cmos by changing the jumpers.
i asked some expert ,they said maybe the problem is the battery ..but i changed the battery but the problem is still appear.
    please help me ...
    thx :(

There's a slight chance that you got a dud battery, or dirty contacts on the battery holder.
Check the battery voltage reading in the BIOS settings - it should be at least 3.0V (a fresh battery should be around 3.2V).
As I said, it's only a slight chance that it's the above problem, but when the obvious solutions don't work, you have to explore the more obscure choices.
    Cheers
