A Dummies Guide to Android Terminology

I found this recently and for "dummy me" it answered some questions I had so I thought some of you folks may also enjoy reading it.

Pretty much all I want this server to do is be a fast, reliable server. They currently have two share points which 8-9 Mac users store files on regularly.
I tried installing the server version last week to play with it and made the mistake of jumping straight to 10.4.9 without testing. There seems to be a bug in 10.4.9 which prevents OS 9 users from being able to transfer files - they get disconnected. There are reports of this on MacFixIt which I of course read after the fact.
I ended up reverting to the client version of OS X 10.4.8 on this machine with a program called SharePoints to help with the setting up of the users and share points. This seems to be reliable enough so maybe I don't need the OS X Server version at all at this location. Can anyone comment on my situation and whether or not your feel OS X Server would be a benefit over what I have now?

  • Dummies Guide to OSB - SSL to External Service

    Hi Guys,
I am new to OSB and need a "dummies guide" to this task. I have found some other threads but they mostly assume knowledge I do not have. If anyone could recommend a good document or even a book chapter that could walk me through this.
I have been provided with an https endpoint, a wsdl file and the relevant keys and certificates.
    I need to setup:
proxy service -> business service -> external service.
What is the sequence of events. Is there any step by step guide to doing this.
Any help would be appreciated - Thanks!

    Hi,
The error you are having is different to the one I got, so probably the patch will not solve your issue. Before to try the JSEE SLL make sure that your configuration is correct.
In your trust keystore you must have the CA certificate, or even the complete chain from the server. i.e, if you install the certificate in your browser, you can check there the complete chain from the server and download one by one each certificate.
In your identity keystore, you must install the client certificate that you have been provided from the server and the private key. Which type of certificate is that, is a p12 or pfx file extension?. If so have a look to that link that, I found it useful http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/entarch/pfx-pem-certificate-formats-092744.html
I made a document with all the configuratio steps, send me your email and I'll send you.

  • I need a dummies guide to flashing

i have just this morning got my nokia n900, second hand from ebay.
before i put any files on there i want to restore it completely, but this flashing thing is really confusing me. I've done a search of the boards but it baffles me, so if anyone could answer these questions it'd be really helpful:
    1) how do i completely wipe it as though it were brand new? (not 'restore original settings' in settings menu, i mean the equivelant of a hard reset)
    2) how do i determine what firmware i'm on?
    3) what is 'flashing'? is it necessary? if i connect my phone to pc suite/NSU to check for updates, will it work as it does on S60 eg nokia 5800, or do i need another method?
    4) i gather the latest firmware isn't yet available for the UK. how do i go about installing it given the n900 doesn't require a changed product code like other models?
    Thanks

You need to flash.. there are two items: OS and EMMC
There are three storage areas on the phone.. 256: Main OS, 2G Extra OS and settings, 28Gig main storage for data, but not apps
flashing the OS image wipes the OS 256meg.. flashing the emmc image wipes the 2Gig extra and the 28gig main.. so, flashing both will wipe the device completely
    2) how do i determine what firmware i'm on?
open settings, scroll down, about product.. if you're in the uk the latest is 2.2009.51-1.203.2 if you're using a vodafone device (device, not sim) it'll be similar but 205 not 203
    3) what is 'flashing'? is it necessary? if i connect my phone to pc suite/NSU to check for updates, will it work as it does on S60 eg nokia 5800, or do i need another method?
flashing describes writing to the flash memory.. it is a bit like "burning" a cdr or "formatting" a floppy disc.
Using NSU to up the phone is a bit backwards.. the N900 is woefully undersupported by Nokia's PC software, NSU included.. I don't believe NSU will perform a "seamless" update of an N900, like it would on a recent Nokia device.. it would effectively wipe most of it.. personally, I don't trust NSU + N900.. I use flasher..
flasher is a command line tool that runs on Windows, Linux and Macs.. it is hardcore, but it rarely fails to satisfy
The best way to "check for updates" and install a new update is to use the app manager on the phone (under "More...") it will install the update just as windows update installs updates on windows.. it doesn't require a PC at all and preserves all your data
    4) i gather the latest firmware isn't yet available for the UK. how do i go about installing it given the n900 doesn't require a changed product code like other models?
Don't bother.. it still brings into question how it would affect the warranty, and there is no real benefit just yet.. This might change with PR1.2 (the next update) is released..
Nokia releases firmware in 3 different ways:
First: app manager.. this is the package tool on the phone.. this version will allow phones to update themselves. Currently the latest firmware available here is 2.2009.51 for the UK and 3.2010.2 for the rest of the world
Second: NSU. This method is the standard Nokia way for updating old handsets (shouldn't we be using Ovi suite? no?? ok!) Just as above, the latest UK is 2.2009.51 and 3.2010.2 for everyone else
Last: Flasher.. this method allows you to download firmware files (OS and emmc) and flash them onto your device using the command line tool "flasher-3.5". For some CRAZY and IRRITATING reason, the latest version available for the UK is 1.2009.42 which is now 4 versions behind the rest of the world.. where as 3.2010.2 is available for everyone else.. I don't get why they are holding the UK versions back here, since they are available via app manager AND NSU?! I think it is solely to wind up the UK users and offer them the usual poor level of support we've suffered with S60 (Note the N97 or 5800 in the UK STILL do not have the new firmware versions)
All the files and versions of flasher-3.5 are available from http://tablets-dev.nokia.com
You could use flasher to install a non-UK firmware, but it is a lot of hastle and you'll wipe your device (not to mention to risk to your warranty)
Use app manager on the phone to try and update, if not, fall back to NSU (and backup first)

  • Colour management for dummies please

I have seen many discusions about ink limits and colour profiles but can anyone offer a  dummies' guide?!
I use CS5 and in Bridge it is set to Europe Prepress 3. My understanding is that this should take care of things but when I make a PDF of my job and preflight it in Acrobat I get an ink limit warning. The profile of the placed Photoshop file (which is CMYK) is FOGRA39, as is the InDesign file (obviously, as this is defined by Prepress 3). So if I make a PDF X-1a shouldn't all that control the ink limit?
I have found that if I switch the Photoshop file to RGB then it works fine - I can see in InDesign separations preview that ink is OK, and the PDF preflights OK in Acrobat. So that tells me that the ink control happens when a conversion is required. The general wisdom seems to be that for CMYK print, files linked to InDesign should be CMYK not RGB (though to me, RGB seems to work fine as it gets converted at PDF stage), so how do I limit the ink if the file is CMYK? Should my Photoshop file not be colour managed perhaps? I read in a forum that Photoshop restricts the ink limit according to the colour profile being used, but that doesn't seem to be happening for me.*
I called Adobe and their best shot was that I should switch CS5 to North America Prepress, and use the 'High Quality Print' PDF preset. Well maybe I'm taking it too literally, but I'm In England and have a job which is about to be printed in Hungary! And also, this yields a US Web Coated (SWOP) v2 profile which doesn't seem right as I will be printing sheetfed.
I would appreciate it if someone could straighten me out.
    * I tested this by switching the Photoshop file to Web Coated FOGRA28 and the colour values did change to allow for a lower ink limit, so maybe there's something in that. So why doesn't FOGRA39 do it? With the colour set to FOGRA39 Photoshop happily accepts a nice black blob coloured as 100% each of C,M,Y and K.
Sorry if this is a bit long but it seems like a useful discussion for Colour management newbies.

I read in a forum that Photoshop restricts the ink limit according to the colour profile being used, but that doesn't seem to be happening for me.*
Total Ink limit is a parameter of a CMYK profile—so the limit won't be exceeded when you make a color conversion from any other color space into that profile's color space, i.e AdobeRGB>FOGRA39, or US Sheetfed Coated>FOGRA39. However, once the file is converted to CMYK there's nothing stopping me from exceeding the limit via a color correction. For example, I could convert a PS file filled with 0|0|0 RGB to FOGRA39 CMYK and the ink limit would not exceed the 330% defined in the FOGRA39 profile, but as you noted I could also fill the resulting CMYK file with 100|100|100|100 and exceed the 330%  limit.
Also, there's nothing stopping me from assigning the FOGRA39 profile to any CMYK file. In that case there's no color conversion—I could make a new SWOP Coated CMYK file, fill it with 100|100|100|100, assign FOGRA39, and the fill would still have 400% total ink.
Total ink is only limited via a color conversion
The general wisdom seems to be that for CMYK print, files linked to InDesign should be CMYK not RGB (though to me, RGB seems to work fine as it gets converted at PDF stage)
The general wisdom is actually old conventional wisdom, there's nothing wrong with making the conversion from RGB to CMYK when you export—the resulting CMYK values will be no different than the ones you would get out of PS assuming the source and destination profiles, and rendering intents are the same. The no RGB rule is a hangover from when you couldn't make color managed color conversions inside a page layout program.

  • Help needed for THE decision

    Hi everyone ☺
I’m finally planning to start recording what I play, and after some hours of wandering on the web I found some interesting possibilities. Now what I need is to decide which one is more suitable for my needs, and here comes the moment for apple discussions
Basically, I will record my own music one track/instrument at a time (I’m still not able to play more than one…and I dont’ want to spend 2.000$ to buy a 24-ins device just to record drum tracks), I’d like to have a software with built-in effects for guitar/bass/voice, integrated soundtrack possibilities (to play with video recordings), mixing options for both stereo and surround mixing, and I don’t want any card to be placed into my mac. Well, and obviously the sound quality must be pro-like…as anyone probably wants.
So, here’s what I came up with:
    a) getting logic pro studio 8 and apogee duet
    b) getting pro tools m-powered and mbox 2
    c) getting one of the two softwares and a Monster iStudioLink Instrument cable and plug instruments directly into the mac
    Now, the questions are:
if I can plug an instrument directly into my mac and control all parameters via one of the two softwares, what do tools like duet and mbox2 serve for?
In the case this tools are useful [ ☺ ], why ☺ … and which is the couple software/hardware that can best suit my needs?
I assume that every software has a proprietary file extension in which audio tracks are saved, so that it should be impossible to record an audio track with one software and edit it with another that has different functions/plugins (ex. from logic to pro tools, from pro tools to cakewalk sonar which I have on a pc etc.). Am I right, or is there any “standard”, non compressed high quality file type in which track can be saved and exported to be edited with different softwares?
I know that from this post it may easily seem that I’m a hopeless digital idiot, but I swear the situation is not really that bad so no need for the kind of explanations with drawings like the ones you find in the “for dummies” guides lol so every experts’ advice will be greatly appreciated
    Neptune

Thank you Bee Jay and Pancenter for the lighting-fast and useful answers
now I am aware that an interface IS NEEDED lol (that means they are not produced without a reasons, are they?). I know Pro Tools is the industry standard but I don't like anyone/anything to tie me to their choices/interests (so that's why I was asking about Pro Tools, knowing that there's some sort of "hardware threat"). What I look for is just quality and if I understood what you both mean, as far as this aspect is concerned, Logic and Pro Tools are substantially comparable...isn't it? On the interfaces side, I already checked the Saffire ones (they seem quite good, and cross-platform use is definitely a plus), I will check the others mentioned and will let you know In fact, I didn't consider the "platform problem" but, as I wrote, I also own a PC with an Audigy 2 soundcard (midi/analog/optical/digital inputs/outputs and firewire port...not Madonna's private studio, but not as sad as Mac's little hole) and Sonar 6 Producer Edition, so that has been a really good point to ponder. And now, in the middle of this software/hardware battle...any personal suggestions based on tests/personal experience?

  • How to review training videos?

    Hello,
I'm reviewing a coworker's training videos and am new to this.  What criteria should I use in reviewing a demonstration-based training video?
I think in order to provide  effective feedback, I need a list of elements that make good training videos.    Would anyone know a website or book that explains what makes a good training  video GREAT?
Also, is there a section on this site that can provide feedback on training  videos?
    Thanks!

    Hi there,
It might help if we knew what the subject of your co-workers training videos is. I'm guessing from what you've said that you're talking about a video training course where the presenter narrates a screencast (a recording of their screen), to explain the software. Correct me if I'm wrong about that.
I've been looking at video training courses for Photoshop Elements and Photoshop for three or four years now - I even produced one a few years back - so I know what it's like from both the student and the teacher's point of view. In four years, this is the best Photoshop Elements video training course I've seen by far.
You asked what criteria you should use in reviewing - here are some of the guidelines I lay down on that page:
    1) A great training course has to use screencast video - You could follow a text guide, but why not just go and buy a manual or an 'X for dummies' guide if you're going to do that - video is the best way to illustrate and communicate training advice for products as complicated as Adobe Photoshop.
    2) A great training course should cover all angles - This is a balance. The training course must be complete without being comprehensive. It should be complete, so that no major section of the product is missed out - there's nothing more frustrating than finding out at the end that the trainer isn't going to address what you're interested in. But the training almost certainly shouldn't be comprehensive. Taking Photoshop Elements as an example, if the trainer explicitly mentions every single mode that every single tool can be used in, every keyboard shortcut, every menu item, every dialog ... you get the point ... the training will end up causing A) information overload, and B) boredom! The training should provide good coverage of the program (good breadth), with an appropriate level of detail (fair depth).
    3) In the same vein, some of the Photoshop Elements training I've watched has been agonizingly boring! The training should be broken down into sections of a sensible size, and each one should leave you begging for more. The training should be fun! And the trainer should communicate in a way that makes the training easily understandable - people will benefit from and enjoy the training a lot more if the instructions and descriptions are clear and easy to follow.
    4) As in any presentation, think about the target audience. Is it meant to be an 'absolute beginners Photoshop Elements training course', or should the title be 'Advanced Photoshop Elements training for guru-grand-masters'? Is it just for those using Windows, or just for those using Mac? Try to review the training with a target audience in mind, so you can assess whether it meets their needs. Like me, you might even want to buy or sample other video training courses to see how they compare.
    5) Finally, good training doesn't always have to be free, but it shouldn't cost the earth either. The Photoshop Elements training I review here costs $49.95. That's a reasonable price for what is a really excellent training resource. But asking someone to pay hundreds and hundreds of dollars for training is rarely appropriate, perhaps with the exception of a face-to-face training course. Make great content, and then over-deliver on all your promises to the consumer, at a price that they simply can't get over - then let them rave about it to all their friends. =)
One more good tip: I mentioned training books above - visit your local bookshop or library and grab a training book on the product (so for example I might do an Amazon search for 'PSE8 for dummies', see what's about, then pop to Waterstones to flick through a copy) - see what topics THEY cover. See the level of detail they give. If you had to honestly recommend a product to someone, would it be the book or the training course? It's a nice easy metric to judge how valuable the training really is.
You asked about a section on the site where people can provide feedback on training videos - I actually have a section for that on my site. You can post and discuss Photoshop Elements training reviews here, and Photoshop training reviews here. I'd love to hear about any resources that you think are worth mentioning.
I hope that helps. All the best, Rob.
PS. Just a tip: In general, don't cross-post the same question over several different forum areas. =)
