A-Express on XP: Interruptions

Hi, we have established a wireless network using an Airport Express for our two laptops, both running XP (SP2). One of them has a Intel Pro Wireless 802.11b card, and the other likewise, but with the g standard. The laptop with the g-card has several problems: the internet is slow, the connection gets disrupted every once in a while, and streaming music from iTunes is full of random interruptions and practically unlistenable. The other laptop works fine, though. We are using WPA2 encryption, but the problems appear no matter what type of encryption (including no encryption) we choose.
Interference robustness is turned on. Multicast rate is on 2. Changing either of these has no apparently effect. Changing the Airport Mode to "pure" b-mode has no effect either.
Can someone please help?

Yes. You will want to configure the new 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) as a ProxySTA. In this configuration, the AXn will join the wireless network created by the Time Capsule and share Internet access through its Ethernet port to the PS3.
To activate ProxySTA, you must set up the Express to join a wireless network and then enable the Allow Ethernet Clients setting; both settings are located in the Wireless tab of AirPort Utility. The feature should work with any wireless network: a, b, g, or n; and 5GHz or 2.4GHz. (Note that the Express, which ships with firmware 7.3, must also be updated to firmware 7.3.1 for this feature to appear.)

Error -6753 when airport utility trying "to access wireless device"

I recently replaced a 3rd party router with Airport Extreme. Airport Express was connected via ethernet to the existing router; a HP C4600 printer was connected to the Express via cable. Since switching the router, I can still print wirelessly from my MacBook Pro laptop but can no longer print from the PC that is hard-wired to the Extreme. The Express is flashing amber. When I go into Airport Utility, it sometimes "finds" the Express and sometimes doesn't. When I try to configure the Express, I receive an error message -6753 (error in accessing the wireless device...check that network is valid). Bonjour for Windows also cannot find the printer. I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting all cords and plugs without success. Suggestions?

Ah. I am glad you told me that. As I understand your network, you want the Express to "create a wireless network", not "extend", "join", or "participate in a WDS". Create. The network it creates should have the *exact same network name and security* as the network you instructed your Extreme to create. Leave its radio channel on "automatic" though, since the Express and Extreme will need to use different wireless channels. "Automatic" will let them figure that out between themselves (though you should confirm they're really different after they've done so).
Under "internet" make sure "Connect Using" is set to "Ethernet". "Connection Sharing" must be set to *"off (bridge mode)"*.
The fact your Express is connected to the Extreme via Ethernet is a very good thing. In that configuration, your Express will get its IP address from your Extreme via Ethernet, and create its own wireless network. Your computers can wander from the Extreme's wireless range to the Express's without interruption.
A WDS accomplishes the same thing, but without a wired connection between the two base stations. In that case you would need both radio channels to be identical. Since they're connected via Ethernet, you don't need or want a WDS. It's a pain to set up and presents significant disadvantages over the wired connection that you have.
You can leave the Extreme's "allow this network to be extended" check box set, or not. It won't hurt anything but that's not what you need in this configuration.
I'm not using an Airport network at the time being, so there might be something I missed until I can verify these steps. Until then I hope this gets things going in the right direction.

Music question!
Does anyone know if my powerbook 500 mhz is too old of a model to use with an Airport Express?
I have an older Pb500 and I get the connection and the music starts playing out of the speakers, but after 10 sec, it stops, and then it starts again a few seconds after.
I talked to the support several times but now they are not helping me anymore due that the warrenty is expired.
I have a friend that has a brand new powerbook and he can play all night with the airport express, with-out interruption, so I guess it is my old computer that is acting up?
any thoughts?

Music interrupts when using iTunes & remote speakers via Airport Express

Like many other I have had this problem.
Short version:
It disappeared when I turned of a wireless network expander and was only running the network with the wireless router and Airport Express on.
Long version:
I had the folowing setup. One Linksys wireless router, one Linksys access point configured as wireless repeater (to extend the range of my network). About in the middle my Airport Express is located. When I disconnected the Wireless Repeater the problem disappeared. My conclusion is that Airport Express was switching between the two "base stations" and that was when the interruption was created. Anyone else who has about the same setup and do experience the problem that can verify by disconnecting everything except the wireless router?

The trouble you are reporting sounds like WiFi connection probs. Signal quality and strength is just not sufficient to ensure a constant and high enough data transfer. I would recommend to do some test with AP and computer being rather close to each other. Its may a good idea to switch from WEb to WPA encryption.

Streamed music to Airport Express interrupts

Hi,
Recently, I installed an Airport Express to stream my music from my iMac to the speakers in my office, at home.
Everything works good, but often the streaming just stops when I start typing something in the address bar of Safari.
In iTunes, this little icon gets yellow :
Both my iMac (from which the iTunes music is streamed) and my AE are wireless. Both are quite far from the TimeCapsule base station, but the signal is good for both (I download up to 50 Mbit/sec, so...).
When the music interrupts, I have to click "play" again and iTunes says "trying to connect to AiportExpress...." After a couple of seconds, the musics streams normally.
Sounds strange, no?

Wireless is shared bandwidth and if the stream is using a large chunk of the available bandwidth then it will have issues when you start using Safari.
Change over as much as possible to ethernet .. it is far more efficient and multiple computers can work at the same time.. the difficulty with wireless is that only one device can connect at a time.. so wireless works on a time slicing system.. fine for data.. really lousy for streams of audio or video.
If you cannot fix it with ethernet try looking at EOP (homeplug) adapters these are still better than wireless when they work.. however the only way to find out is to test them.. they behave differently in every setup.

The airport utility will show how fast the wireless link is.. to do this hover your mouse over the connection where it says good or average. etc.
You can see that mine show average but the RSSI is really low.. -85dBm is actually a really poor link.
If I use the old v5 utility I will discover that signal to noise is only separated by 3 or 4db.
You can be pretty sure trouble will come.. just a person moving around through the wireless beam will cause issues.

Aiport Express interruption!

Hi Guys,
So I'm using my Airport Express with iTunes and have it connected to my wireless network and my speakers. The problem I'm having is that while my music is steaming to my speakers there constant cutting in and out of playback. There is obvious interruption. I have tried using interfering robustness and it doesn't seam to help.
Any suggestions guys?

This is a frequently reported problem in this discussion forum. The advice provided by Apple in the article I referred to above is about as good as it gets - and even with this advice there are some people who never seem to be able to get rid of this problem.

WDS extreme-express interruptions

extended existing WDS between Extreme-11n (sw rev 7.1) and express-11g (id 00:11:24:0a...) with another express-11g (id 00:19:e3:e5..., both units sw rev 6.3), the second express keeps dropping (and printing interrupted). I originally was seeking fault with some new wireless devices installed in the vicinity and trying to find a clean channel, but finally watching the logs on the 11n base it would appear that:
1. both express units receive the same IP-address: 10.0.1.232
2. the 11n base only appears to be dealing with the extreme unit with the lowest id 00:11:24:0a... and not interacting with the higher-id unit
3. the lower express-id still appears in the 11n base log after a base cold start when that express has been powered off ("deauthenticating with station 00:11:24:0a...")
4. the 00:11:24:0a... id still appears in the "Wireless Clients" signal/noise ratio log (measurements 0/-1/-1) even if that unit was not present at base restart
now it would probably make sense that the WDS between the 11n base and the second express-11g is still working after the first express-11g was removed?
though bonjour-printing on that unit is still problematic (you have to restart the express to start the print job)
when I restart the lower-id express (with the higher-id express still running), you get the following:

Unfortunately I don’t have an answer for you but I’m experiencing similar problems since I upgraded to 7.1. I’ve had no problems with my setup since I setup my network. After the upgrade to 7.1 I have been seeing the amber light flash now and then and more often when our other laptop is also accessing the network. Here is a little info from the logs:

Streaming from iTunes to AirPort Express interrupted with good conectivity

I connect from my iMac to a radio in the kitchen via AirPort Express. The stream from iTunes is interrupted ever so often and the second speaker in AirPlay is dimmed. The connection to the AirPort Express remains excellent throughout. Restarting helps, but then it tends to happen again. Sometimes after an interruption it starts working again. I did not notice any specific timing or other activity on my iMac that could cause this.
Any ideas?

besides changing the radio channel used, also try this:
open system preferences
open network pane
select airport in the left list
click the advanced button
go to the TCP/IP tab
set the configure IPv6 field to OFF.
click OK
click apply
now try again to connect to your remote speakers.

Airport Express: Music's playing with interruptions

Hi,
I'm having a lot of trouble trying to hear music via AirTunes on my Airport Express. Everything's fine but the speaker or headphone connected to the Airport Express-Station is very laggy, so music is not playing continously, having interruptions, like having lots of data on the stream or so. Not sure how I can get it fixed...

Might it be possible that you may have some form of WiFi interference in the area? (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108065)
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like AirPort Client Monitor (a part of AirPort Management Tools), MacStumbler, or iStumbler to determine potential areas of interference...and either, eliminate them or attempt to significantly reduce them.

Music interrupts while listening to wireless speakers via Airport Express

I live in an apartment building with many wi-fi connections all around me. When I listen to music via iTunes, I am regularly prompted with the following message: An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker “Home”, that’s the name of my Airport Express attached to my speakers. An unknown error occurred (- 3256).  This message usually appears twice in a row with a 1-3-second interval. For the song to resume I need to click Play. After play resumes, another message may appear that says: Your remote speakers cannot be found on your network. Check Airtunes configuration and network settings or choose another speaker.  Again I have to click on Play for music to resume. This scenario keeps going on every 30-45 seconds. And yet, the light is Green on Airport Express and the network ha a check mark in front of it. What my network name does not have in front of it is a padlock. Today when all this happened, I lost contact with “Home” and could not regain it. So I decided to reset the AE and, in the process, noticed that the WEP key code which is 26 characters was represented by only 5-6 black dots. I replaced the code and got the network back. But still no padlock. Is my connection secure? Will it all happen again? Why no padlock? Sure enough, within 10 minutes the sam problem reappears. What to do?

I am trying to connect to a database that I have installed on my computer, so it is a local connexion.

Airport Express version 6.3 with iMac...videos interrupted

My online videos are being interrupted as if it is still being loaded. This happens thoughout most the video. My iMac is running 10.6.8 and is within 3 feet of the airport. The airport is connecting with PPPoE and is WPA/WPA2 Personal secured. Our service is through AT&T/SBC Global and it seems to function well. The problem is mostly with videos. Suggestions would be appreciated.

The reason I asked is that only the device connected directly to the Internet would require to be configured to provide your DSL user credentials via PPPoE. That could be the SpeedStream, AX, or any of your Macs. Typically, you would want the first (upstream) device (in this case, your SpeedStream) to do this. That would mean that the SpeedStream would perform as your "main" router and the AX would need to be reconfigured as a bridge.
However, it is totally possible to reverse that with the SpeedStream as a bridge and the AX acting as the main router. I am just trying to understand your current network configuration to be able to offer any advice on the streaming issue that you posted about.
Since both routers can have NAT enabled, one may be more efficient than the other for this service. This would lead to better WAN-to-LAN throughput performance ... and subsequently better video streaming across that boundry. You may want to experiment with which router will have NAT enabled to see which gives you better streaming results.

If the installer says, that you need an earlier version of OS X installed, then you are using an Upgrade disc.
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Leopard 10.5.x, is the most up to date OS.
But, if you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, can be purchased, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, AllMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

The installation was interrupted message after iTunes upgrade

I would appreciate help with my problem. I'd like to use iTunes but it doesn't work.
Description of the problem: I was happily using iTunes for more than a year. I received a notice that a new version was available and I upgraded. When the installation was complete I received the following message:
"The installation was interrupted before iTunes could be completely installed."
iTunes is not listed in the Programs menu and there are no files at c:\program files\itunes (itunes folder is not there).
After subsequent downloads and installs, I get the same error. When I do the iTunes standard install, QuickTime is
available and works well. I went back to the previous version, but it continued to give me the same error. I found very old versions of iTunes on the web and they too had the same problem.
During the install the iTunes icon briefly appears on my desktop and then disappears. The message box indicating that the installation was interrupted occurs right after that.
I've tried to describe the problem in quite a bit of detail below to help avoid suggested fixes that have been tried and failed.
1. I have followed the steps in the KB article. Please see the details of that work below.

2. I have Administrator access. I have verified that I'm part of both the Adminstrators and SERVICE groups under Impersonate a client after authentication. This process is found in the following doc:

3. Windows is fully updated through the Windows Update utility. See Windows version info below.
4. I can install any other application. I use this computer for work and I can install and uninstall any other application
I try. No other known errors or problems. I've installed other applications that use Microsoft Installer and InstallShield installers without problems.
5. I tried the Quicktime standalone install and I received the notice that "The installation was interrupted..." Quicktime is now not found on the machine and there is no Quicktime files in the Program Files. During the middle of the installation, I received the following error. Error during QuickTime Standalone (7.1.0.210) install:
Error 1905.Module c:\program files\QuickTime\qtuiPanelControl.dll failed to unregister. HRESULT -2147220472 Contact your support personnel.
When I attempt to install iTunes from the standard install, Quicktime installs properly and works. It only fails during the standalone install.
6. No strange characters in the folder. There is no itunes folder so it contains no folder. The download exe is on my desktop.
7. Temp Folder emptied and machine restarted (many times)
8. Uninstall older versions - They are not listed as installed so there is nothing to uninstall. The Windows Clean Up utility does not list them so I can't use that tool to remove them. It appears that iTunes is cleaning itself up when the installation fails so there are no files. There is no iTunes folder at c:\program files\.
9. iPodService alert is not there so I don't need to delete it.
10. Redownload software - It has been downloaded many times. Each time I'm careful to permanently delete the previous install exe so it is redownloaded.
11. AntiVirus software has been disabled. I'm using McAfee VS Enterprise 8.0.0. I have also checked the AV logs to see if it has blocked an install or other event around that time - there is nothing in the AV logs to show any blocked or prevented activity. No activity at all because the software is disabled.
12. Registry - A search of "itunes" in the Registry Editor finds a lot of references. Too many to list, but most are in keys that apply to file types.
13. I have downloaded and attempted to install the Windows Installer 3.0 package from the following URL:

I'm told by a box during the install that the version I have installed is newer than the one on the website and there is no need to install it.
14. The version of iTunes that I'm trying to install right now is 6.0.4.2. I've had this problem for at least three months so I've been trying many versions before its release.
15. Other than the mentioned AV program, I don't have a third-party firewall, anti-spyware or monitoring program installed.

It is a miracle - After about 9 months without itunes, the new release installed on my machine today and appears to be working.
7.0.0.70 is the verion I just installed.
Another note to add to this now resolved issue. I bought an AirPort Express and I was not able to install the Admin software on the CD. I received the same error as I received with iTunes and Quicktime. This leads me to believe that this problem is in the registry or some other installer issue that is specific to Apple installations. I will have to go home and try to re-install that software. Maybe the new iTunes version cleared up the problem.
