A fallen PowerBook, a broken harddrive?

Hi there,
My PowerBook G4 fell a while ago and now i have a problem. It will go on, but you can't call it a boot because you don't hear the mac-sound, and i can't see any video or eject my disk from the cdrom-player, which was still in there. I hooked my book up with an external display but that won't show anything either. Does this sound like a broken/disconnected harddrive or am i talking nonsense? I seek help!

Connect them with a FireWire cable and start up the PowerBook with the T key held down.

  • Retrieve data from old broken harddrive

    Hi, I want to ask.
Last friday, my harddrive has broken for unknown reason. I knew it has broken from information I got in PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI. The harddrive failed on Extensive Test and Long DST test (Error code : Q8FETV-77C7GA-MPFX0J-61DJ03). I plan to buy a new harddrive.
My question is, can I retrieve my data from the broken harddrive ? I didn't have backups for the data. If it is still possible, what are the steps ? Can I do it by myself or should I get some help from computer service shop to help me ?
    Thank you.

  • SELLING POWERBOOK G4 BROKEN refurbish and will be fine

    My Item Is:
    15inch PowerBook G4
    15.2-inch TFT Display
    1280x854 resolution
    1.25GHz PowerPC G4
    512MB DDR333 SDRAM
    80GB
    SUPERDRIVE
    Hard Drive
    ATI Mobility Radeon
    9700 (64 MB DDR)
    Backlit keyboard
    Gigabit Ethernet
    FireWire 400 & 800
    Analog audio in/out
    DVI & S-Video out
This was a top of the line PowerBook G4 purchased in 2004. It is now broken - at least that is what I assume. It will not boot up to the destop but rather blinks a flashing folder when you turn it on.
It does recognize a hard drive when I start it up in Target Mode. Might be something wrong with the logic board... This I am unsure of.
This laptops LCD monitor is not in perfect condition either. It works but you have to fiddle with it to get it to work. The top 80% always works and then you have to push the bottom left part of the screen to get it to work. I personally bought a monitor for it so I wouldnt have to deal with it.
Last issue with this laptop is that the F1 key is missing and the escape key does not work. For this problem I bought a wireless keyboard.
    This product will come with:
the operating disk that it was purchased with (OSX)
    battery
    power cord
    extension for power cord
    DVI cable
    instruction manuel
    iLife disk
Pretty much everything that it came with.
This product is - like i stated - inoperative right now. I am not the best with computers and was planning on buying a new one and that is just what I did once this all occured.

  • My PowerBook was broken when I took it out of box

I bought a PowerBook for my mom for her birthday (I have a 15" and she loves it so I bought her a 12") I waited a week to open it and only opened it before her birthday so that I could install some of the software that I have. To my shock the left side (where the charger plugs in) is dented!! It looks like someone dropped it. I brought it to apple and they said they could do nothing because I cannot prove that it wasn't me who dropped it!! I don't know what to do....$1100 for something that it broken??!! Help me please!!
    12" PowerBook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Have you tried the power button or charging it to see if it was dead? Some batteries die quickly.

  • Powerbook G4 17" Harddrive not appearing in anything...logic board? or othe

I've pulled it, tested it in another system, as well as in external enclosures. The drive is ok and the system can boot off Firewire and CD, but in a few disk utility programs like apple's and disk warrior, or df -H from terminal, the harddrive does not appear.
Is this logic board or ribbon? Boot gives folder with ? and finder logo if trying to boot to hard drive. Tested with 100GB original and a brand new fresh 160GB which both work on other systems.
A friend who works at apple store ran ASD 2.5.8 and it tested all OK.

    fpc:
I agree with BGreg. It is either the ATA ribbon cable, or the ATA Controller on the logic board. The ribbon cable is much easier to test by swapping it out. However, if it is not the ribbon cable you will be out about $40 (ifixit). The logic board is another issue. You would be better advised to run it off a 2.5" drive in an external FW enclosure. It is not the ideal solution, but it does afford portability as the drive can be powered off firewire. Otherwise you can seek the services of a reputable repair outfit like DT&T Computer Services.

  • Powerbook G3  M4753 harddrive runing  no startup

    Powerbook G3 M4753 No startup

What happens on trying to start? Nothing means something different from hearing the hard drive and fans starting to spin up.
Do you hear the startup chimes?
Do you have a valid system disk to try booting? That can tell you whether it's the hard drive that 's not happy or if it's something more serious. If you can start from a system CD (holding the c key during boot) and get a usable desktop, that's point to the hard drive as the failed component, but the logic board and other
The hard drives are small and not as durable over time as the larger 3.5-inch drives in desktop computers. They do fail with time. Fortunately, the hard drive is considered a user-serviceable part in this model, and replacing one is not that hard.
If you hear things spinning, try booting with the extensions off by holding SHIFT during startup. If that gets you to the desktop, you have some incompatible extension causing the problem.
You may also try "zapping the PRAM." Press and hold the key combo command +option +p + r at startup and keep holding until you hear a total of three startup chimes.

  • Powerbook G4 New Harddrive ... Now Won't Boot

I recently discovered that my harddrive had failed the S.M.A.R.T. status test. I ordered a new drive and popped it in tonight. I tossed the Tiger disc in and started it up. I was kicked to the gray screen with the finder icon and flashing question mark. Rebooted, holding down the C key. Same result every time I tried. Popped the recovery disc in, held down C, same result. Removed all media and tried to boot into Target Disc Mode. Nothing, get kicked over to the same screen. I thought maybe I hadn't popped the keyboard connector in right, but I can hold down Option and get the password prompt, so clearly the keyboard is working.
So question is, what do I do now? Is there something else for me to try or do to help me get to a point where I can either do the recovery or I can install Tiger?

I realized I had protected the Open Firmware, so once I provided my password, it gave me the option to boot from the install disc.

  • Installing tiger on powerbook with broken screen

I am attempting to install Tiger on an older Powerbook (G4 Titanium 1ghz 1gb), which has a damaged and illegible LCD. The machine is fully up to date with 10.3.9, and works fine connected to a Cinema display.
After booting from the 10.4 install DVD, it appears that the updater wants some kind of input, but this is not being echoed to my external monitor. I've tried it with display mirroring both off and on, but to no avail. Does the update work only with the onboard monitor when it senses a Powerbook ? And if so, are screencaps out there somewhere so that I can try to answer the install prompts while flying blind ?
    thanks !
    Powerbook G4 Titanium   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I don't know about the external monitor, but you can install OSX on any Firewire disk.
To boot from that blind Mac, plug in the blind Mac to a working Mac with a Firewire cable. Boot the blind Mac holding the "t" key down (for Target). The blind machine's hard disk should appear in the other Mac's mounted disk list. Proceed to install on the Firewire mounted disk.
Once that is done, boot from the blind Mac's hard disk and finish the setup. To do this, start it up while holding down the "t" key. Shut down other Mac and hold down the option key while starting. The "Restart" menu item may not work here, so you may need to completely shut down and start from the power button.
Now you see the screen to choose what disk to boot from. Boot from the blind disk and your working Mac will be running from the blind Mac's hard disk and you can set it up for remote login, etc.

  • Looking to replace broken Harddrive in Macbook Pro Retina

    Hi All,
I am loking to replace my harddrive in my 15" Macbook Pro cause of disk failure.
Can anyone tell me if this harddrive: http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/4867/crucial_m4_msata_256gb_solid_state_drive_r eview/index.html
will work if i replace the one in the Retina Pro,
Futhermore, could this harddrive work in my 13" Macbook Air (A1466) ?
    - Rasmus

Sorry for the late reply guys, i shiped it in to the local apple-certified repair shop and it came back with a fresh install and with a note that they didn´t find any problems with it. The odd thing is, that now with about a week of ussage the same problems starts to show, i can still boot it up, but it often freezes and locks-up the whole system, the three error-logs i have been abble to get are posted below, hope some of you can see whats wrong from these:

  • How to deactivate RH7 instance on broken harddrive

    Hi,
Emergency plea to anyone online at the moment! Last night my
harddrive went pop. I installed and activated a copy of my TCS on a
computer at work today with success. Now I'm home I installed a
second copy on another computer so I could catch up with some work,
but of course I'm unable to activate it (as only two activations
    are allowed).
Technical support has now gone home for the evening, and I
cannot find any other messages on the forum with the same problem,
so I'm hoping there is some kind soul online who can help me get
    around this problem.
If I run the 30 day version, do I have all functionality
    available, save, etc?
Thanks so much for your help.
    Liz

    Can't be moved.
You do have full functionality with the 30 day trial and it
will work on a PC that has not had a previous installation of the
    same version.
To activate you will have to contact the activation guys.

You simply have to explain what has happened and they will
    get you going again.

  • PowerBook Charger Broken

My PowerBook G4 (12" • PowerBook6,4) would not start. No reaction at al.
Tried to reset the PMU -- that did nothing.
I had just bought a replacement battery but even after being plugged in for a long time the battery LED lights on the back showed zero lights. The power charger indicator light was a strong amber. Couldn't figure out what was wrong until I tried a different power charger from another mac laptop I have. The G4 started right up.
    Questions:
Can these power chargers go bad with time?
The charger indicator light shows a strong amber. So power seems to be on. Why is it not feeding power to the computer?
    All for now.

  • Broken harddrive?

Ok, I think my harddrive is partially dead.
It won't boot anymore, grub stops in Loading Stage2 and when trying to access it from the arch ftp install cd it takes very long to run cfdisk and when i mount my /home partition i get
    "EXT2-fs error (device sda4): ext2_readdir: bad page in #2353"
"ls: reading directory .: Input/output error"
    fsck says
Couldn't find ext2 superblock, trying backup blocks....
fsck.ext2: bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda
    Then it suggests e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
Is there a way to check the harddrive? I mean see if i can access all bits on it and not check the filesystems?
I have a knoppix cd if the arch installl cd isn't enough.
Also, when booting the arch cd it gives alot of errors
    ata1.00 cmd ....
    ata1.00: configured for UDMA/133
    ata1.01: configured for UDMA/133
    ata1: EH complete
Buffer I/O error on deice sda, logcal block 66
Are some of them, they pass by to fast for me to read them.

Have a look on your hard drives home page. You might find a small program that you put on a floppy and boot into to check the condition of your hard drive. I myself was having problems that looked like it was being caused by the hard drive failing. After doing the above it turned out to be a memory problem.
PS: I still had all my data on the disk. Running the program didn't affect the data on the disk. But I suppose there's still that risk of losing data.

  • Does the NMH300 report broken harddrive whe using two drives in raid 1?

    Dear Support,
I´m about to purchase a NMH300 and wonder if that unit will report if one drive brakes down in a raid 1 setup?
If so, how do you find out? Is there a visual indication on the actual unit or som kind of error message in software?
    Thanks
    Kind regards
    Tom

Check out the Linksys articles below, if RAID 1 is not running properly then the RAID status would indicate "degraded" and disk health status "failed".

  • Install mac os tiger on powerbook g4

    Hi all
I have just received a 'old' powerbook g4 without harddrive. After I have installed a ned harddrive , it was ready for test. But what ever key I press (with the install dvd in the drive), the only screen to come up, was a blue one with to small faces in the middle. If I then pressed option key, a screen with a lock (locked) and password field appeared on the screen.
    What is wrong?
And how can I install Mac os (is my cd broke).
    My powerbook g4:
    1.33MHz
    1 Gb ra
    80 GB HD

    Thanks..
But which version do i need for my g4 1.33?
