A feq PC to Mac questions

How can I accomplish the following
1. Cut and paste the path. For example on the PC, i can go into explorer and cut and paste the physical path such as c:\my docs\folder\folder\folder The reason I like to do this is that I have some files that are fairly deep and I am working on four or five different paths. I then paste them into a Text file and can quickly get to them from any application by pasting it....i saw on finder I can see the path, but i haven't found a fast way of actually drilling down to the path or cutting and pasting it.
2. Search for email with multiple criteria. I want to search for email where i have 1. a name 2 a date range 3. text of part of the message. Right now in mail it looks like you can not search for multiple specific fields...is there a way to do this?
3. Use an alias (different reply to address in mail). I am using Google (rather than mobileme as my email provider. I have and alias established. But I can not figure out how to create the second reply to address in Mail. it is not a second account. it is the same account with an alias.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

MAC QUESTION--I'm looking for the toggle button that use to be on the bottom right of desktop folders to increase and decrease the size of the thumbnails.  Does this still exist?

Glad you got it going. I'm in Thumbnail mode most of the time in my Finder, so I didn't notice that the slider isn't there in others. I'm running Yosemite as well and I'm happy this feature has been kept.
    Thanks for letting me know

  • Flashing world icon, sad mac & question mark folder

Hi. Since installing 10.4.3 my system won't boot. I downloaded and installed the update then restarted the machine, the screen go's dull grey and then a square icon with the world inside it start to flash, a few seconds after that a sad mac/question mark folder flashes then the system appears to start. The disk spins up, the Apple logo appears then after a few more seconds the disk graudually grinds to a halt and the system shuts itself down. Why would this be happening, someone told me that it sounds like it's trying to netboot (whatever that may be) How can I resolve this issue and get my system back? Thanks.

Try holding down option (alt) at boot to get the open firmware boot selection screen then select your internal drive as the book disk. After start up completes (if it does) go to System Prefs/Startup Disk and reselect the internal disk, restart and it should be fine.

  • New WD My Passport for Mac - questions!

    Hi, everyone,
I just bought a new WD My Passport for Mac 1 TB. I am going to use it to run Time Machine and then drag and drop pertinent files that I need. From there, I am doing a clean install of Mountain Lion. I have a 2012 MacBook Pro.
I just have a few questions.
    1. I read that there are big issues with this and Mavericks/Yosemite. If I ever upgrade, am I am going to lose everything or has that since been resolved?
    2. How do I install it? When I read the manual, I am not sure if I am supposed to install the software (because of issues with point 1), just plug & play, how to do Time Machine, and so on.
I have another My Passport from a few years back, but don't remember how to set it up.
If someone can dumb it down for me, I'd really appreciate it. I am looking to do a Time Machine, then drag over various documents, my Music folder, iPhoto Library, Mail exports, and a few other things.

Thank you again. It's really nice there are people like you willing to give their time to help others.
An update: My Passport (not named that!) is backing up via Time Machine as we speak. Next step is to copy the files that I need over to the hard drive. I already have on another hard drive, but I figure it is better to be safe than sorry.
My question for you is basically if there is anything I should try to think about or remember to bring over. These are the things that I use regularly and what I have done on the other drive and will do here:
    - Microsoft Office (mostly just Word): I will reinstall the disk, I have the activation code, and I will drag over all of my files
    - iMovie: I've made one movie, and I like it, and I dragged it over and tested it on another MacBook and know it works
    - iPhoto: I will drag over iPhoto Library
    - Mail: I have exported all of my Mailboxes, will re-import them, and then re-set up my accounts
    - iTunes: I dragged over iTunes Music from the Music > iTunes > iTunes Music folder (?)
    - iCal/Notes: logging back into iCloud should do it
    - Stickies: I know there is a database in the ~library ... do I just drag that over?
    - Chrome: I will download it again
    - my printer: I think I just go to the site to download the driver
    - Airport Express: does that just work on its own?
    - Dropbox: I will redownload it but, heck, I might just drop my account
    - Bookmarks are exported from Chrome
    - iCal is exported, just in case.
    - Contacts are exported, just in case
I don't THINK there is anything else I am forgetting that I might use regularly and not realize it. Do you have any suggestions of something I might be missing? I do have an iPhone backup I might want to snag (I know it is stored elsewhere...) but I am thinking of wiping that clean, too.
Should I take note of any specific security or user settings I have (other than basics, like colors and that sort of stuff)
I am nervous that I will forget something but excited to have a nice, fresh new MacBook and fool myself into thinking I got to treat myself to something new!

The answer to (1) is yes. for OSX, there hasn't yet been a full-number release (they're all v10). Point releases come out every couple years or so, and usually cost about $130. So if you had 10.4 and wanted to upgrade to 10.5, you'd have to buy it. But updated numbers after the second point are free. So if you have 10.5, then 10.5.5 is a free download.
Question (2) I'm less sure about, but I would guess that all of those games would probably work. They don't list the particular video card in the Macbook as "Supported", but it's newer than the cards listed. All the other requirements are met.
From the requirements listed, I would guess that "medal of honor war chest" is a PPC game, which means it will probably run on the Intel Macbook, but under emulation. I think usually the newer Intels are fast enough that running PPC stuff under emulation should be fine, but I don't do much of that so I can't speak from experience.
I sometimes install Windows on a second partition on my Macs so I can dual boot, just for games. So there's that option too.

  • Stolen Mac questions

Had my Macbook Air, stolen from my car in Leeds on the 16th of May.
I imediatly contacted the police, who then began to look for it and the suspect.
A day or so later, I got an alert on my iPhone to say my Mac had been located in Sheffield (i'm in Leeds).
I then alerted the police who then went to the address. They couldnt find it.
On the day my Mac went missing, i had pressed the lock function on the app, to lock it when it became active again.
The police were given the serial number.
A few questions I have are:
What exactly is the defintion of a locked Mac, done so by the find my mac app?
If the laptop is taken in to an Apple Store will they need proof of I.D and Purchase, to reset the laptop?
Will they tell me if someone has taken it in to them?
My laptop was sleeping at the time of the theft, it was encrypted with File Vault 2, it had a password, it was apprently locked by the FMM app.
Obviously with the laptop being locked, i would presume there is no way of me locating it again?
Will the laptop be useless to the theif and will my data be useless?
I really hope I find it one day my car was not contents insurence covered

Your Mac cannot be, "reset" without your Apple ID. It was most likely fenced. (Sorry)
Even if the thief took it to an Apple Store, Apple has no way of knowing it's been stolen and it can't be, "reset" without Apple ID.

  • Microsoft Office for Mac questions

    Hi,
I've just bought Microsoft Office for Mac (student teacher version) for my new 20" iMac. I seem to remember reading somewhere that I need to uninstall the test version that comes with the iMac before installing the "real" software.
Is this true, & if so, how do I do it?
Does it install fairly easily or is it problematical?
Will it be available to the 4 user a/c's we have set up (i.e. not just the main a/c) or do I have to do anything to achieve this?
    Thanks.

In the MS Office folder is a folder named Addtional Tools. Inside that folder is the uninstaller. You must uninstall the Trial version (if you have installed it) before installing the normal version of Office. If you have never installed the Trial version then simply drag the entire Trial folder to the Trash and delete it. Then install your normal version of Office.
Any application installed in the Applications folder is available to any user unless specifically restricted in the account.

  • Switching to mac, questions on best place to host reference masters

I am getting ready to switch from PC to Mac and have a question I am hoping I could get some advice on (I have a lot of questions actually, but will start with this one).
I have a large library of photos and videos and plan on getting an imac for my wife and macbook pro for me (I do the tagging/organizing and video editing).
Based on what I read, I am planning on keeping the masters on a separate drive and the aperture library on my macbook pro.
Question is, am I better off keeping the masters on the imac and access that folder as an external folder on my macbook pro for the masters, or should I use a NAS drive for them?
I have an older NAS that I can probably reformat for this purpose, but I often run into complications using a NAS (offsite backup issues, connectivity issues, can't use Time Machine, ...) and have read on the forums about people having issues writing to files on NAS's...
I have a buffalo terastation pro ii, it is about 3 years old.  It is 2 terabytes.  I would get the imac with 2 terabytes and the 256gig ssd drive so the 2 tera could be dedicated to media.
Thanks in advance for any advice, appreciate it.

    plampione wrote:
I am about to buy the macs, so both the desktop and macbook pro will be fast.  I plan on buying the fastest processor, 8gig of ram on the macbook, debating 8 or 16 on the imac, though from the previous thread sounds like it should be 16, and ssd on both (imac with 256 ssd + 2 TB HD, macbook with 512 sad).
I suggest ordering both Macs with the minimum RAM and adding 3rd party RAM yourself.  The task is trivial and will save you heaps.  I bought my iMac with 4GBs (that's two 2GB modules plus two empty slots), and then added two 4GB modules into the empty slots.  So I have 12GBs.  My plan is to try to live with just 12GBs until 8GB modules become affordable, and then replace the two original 2GB modules with two 8GB modules, bringing it to 24GBs.  If needed, I'd ultimately go to 32GBs by replacing the two 4GB modules I have just installed.
I think the MacBook Pro (MBP) still has only two slots, so using 4GB modules, you are limited to 8GBs.  If the architecture of the MBP supports it, you may be able to go to 16GB when 8GB modules become affordable.  But you'd need to check this.
    - using an attached harddrive on the macbook pro - Definitely a reasonable idea, but I was hoping to be able to bring up the library from anywhere in the house.  I do have gigabit ethernet throughout the house and can wire in as needed, but again, was hoping to be able to sit on the sofa and do some tagging.
Another way to achieve this still has your Aperture Library and Masters on the iMac as I recommended above.  You could use the MBP to share the screen of the iMac.  It's a standard OS X function, no software to buy.  You enable sharing on the iMac and log in from the MBP.  That way you have the function on your sofa, but the power and capacity of the iMac for your actual work.  This works fine over wifi for me via an Airport Extreme using 802.11N
    - Backup - by putting the masters on the imac i was planning on using time machine to back them up onsite, and crashplan to backup offsite.
Good plan.  TM and Crashplan are good products and free.
I'd also recommend making a second onsite backup by cloning to a pair of external drives, and periodically send one of these drives offsite.  You may find that Crashplan for offsite backup over the internet is too slow if you have a big photo shoot.
What if I plug into the gigabit ethernet whenever I am going to run aperture?  Would that allow the imac/macbook model to work?  Concerned about the performance issues described above though, even for the machines themselves.  Would copying the library nightly to my wife's computer work?  How big does a 20+k library get with referenced masters?
Size of the library depends on many factors such as choices for previews, and the amount of editing (adjustments) you do, but here is a data point.  I have 47K images, many RAW and the Library was about 60GBs, the referenced Masters another 280GBs.  I say "was" because I have let it grow by importing recent images into it.
Today we are on PCs and I use windows live photo gallery and tag all my photos, which are stored on a NAS, my wife also runs WLPG and can see all the tagging I do.  This works pretty well and is simple, I just import from the camera, show all 'untagged' photos/videos, and tag them.  I also move them to a basic folder structure to be safe.
I understand this is not as feasible on mac, and if you are wondering why I am switching, it is because I have been having a lot of stability problems with the pc's and have had enough.  I use iphones, ipads, and apple tv's.  Recently got a macbook air and really like it.  Just need to figure out how to manage the photo/video library.
A lot of my concerns about your plan are because I'm impatient.  On my MBP, it was taking about 5 seconds to render each image as I reviewed them.  I typically take a very short time to tag the images, so the computer was slower then me.  Now, with the iMac, I'm the slow link in the chain.
It may be that you are used to a leisurely tagging process, but I have no experience with WLPG.
The great things about Aperture that I really love, having come from a Photoshop background are that Aperture is always non-destructive in its editing and it is non-modal in the UI.
There is a price to be paid for non-destructive editing.  Aperture often has to go back to the Master and then apply your adjustments.  This takes resources.  But it saves you time.  And you don't have to muck around creating another external folder structure yourself, as it seems you do with WLPG.  I just import my images into "Projects" in Aperture (the Masters are Managed), and when I want to selectively change Managed Masters to Referenced Masters, I just tell Aperture to do this and that it should utilize my Project structure as the external folder structure.  Aperture does all the folder creation for me, yippee!
Finally, you may even find that the MacBook Air is good enough to do the tagging on with the shared screen approach I mentioned above, and then maybe you don't have to buy a MBP.
    HTH.  Happy to discuss further

  • Switching from Windows to Mac Questions

    Hi again,
I am considering replacing my current windows machine with a MacBook Pro and need answers to several specific questions. I hope this is the right forum:
    1) Will I be able to access my stored files (mostly photos) from an NTFS formatted external hard drive?
    2) Will I be able to move my iTunes files from my Windows machine to the Mac?
    3) Will I be able to sync my iPod to the Mac since I've only used it on the Windows machine?
I don't want to run Windows on the Mac so assume that won't be an option.
Thanks in advance for the answers...

    1) Yes. Just be aware that NTFS volumes will be read-only on a Mac.
    2) Yes. There are better and worse ways to do this however at a minimum all you need to do is copy of your music directory from the PC to your mac and add it to iTunes on the Mac. Itunes will handle the rest.
There are tools and methods that will assist is getting your playlist etc over though I can't think of them off the top of my head at the moment.
    3) You will need to reset your iPod for use with a Mac. However, once you've set up iTunes then resyncing your tunes is simple.

  • IWeb/Domain Forwarding/.mac question

    Hello Everyone
I have been lurking in the forum for some time, and now have a question. I did a search for it without any luck, so here goes.
I have a website I created using iWeb, with a domain I purchased from GoDaddy. I have domain forwarding and domain Masking both enabled. The issue I have is that each page shows only the purchased URL. In other words, I cannot direct someone to an individual page. I would like the pictures page to show up as purchased domain/pictures, and the links page to show up as purchased domain/links.
We had a discussion involving this on a MMUG I belong to. There are 3 of us who all have domains purchased from GoDaddy. The 2 of us hosting on .Mac have the above mentioned issue with the URL. The one person hosted elsewhere (not GoDaddy), has distinct URL's for each page. This leads me to believe the root of the issue resides with .Mac hosting. Does this make any sense?
FWIW, I asked the same question to .Mac support and got nowhere. They just sent me a response explaining what domain forwarding is.
    Dual 2.0 G5 Rev A - PowerBook 17" 1.33   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The masking feature that you describe is just that.... it masks the actual URL with whatever URL you give it...in this case the URL for your domain. So if you type in http://www.yourdomain.com and have it masked and forwarded to your .Mac pages, that URL is the only URL you will ever see in the address bar of your browser. This is the expected behavior for masking.
There are some different things you can do with your domain, though...
Remember that your forwarded domain basically replaces the relevant portion of your .Mac address. I will use my domain name and .Mac iWEb address for example.
    http://www.dirtdoog.com ==> forwards to http://web.mac.com/jwtseng/iWeb
So anytime I see my .Mac URL, I can replace the whole initial section with my domain name...
    http://web.mac.com/jwtseng/iWeb/kate/MyWorld/MyWorld.html
    can be directly replaced with...
    http://www.dirtdoog.com/kate/MyWorld/MyWorld.html
And because I have masking turned on, this is the URL that will stay in my address bar.
For your purposes, you might be interested in assigning subdomains. This feature is located under "Total DNS control". It lets your replace the "www" with a sub-domain that again can be forwarded to any URL. You can use this to forward directly to your photos page using this...
    http://photos.yourdomain.com
That would work too, if you had a page that you commonly like to give out to people.

  • 24" Mac questions for owners/specialists

I've been intrigued by the new 24" iMac and am considering a purchase, but would like to know a few things about the audio and video from iMac owners and others who are familiar with the line.
I originally bought a Mac Mini because it allowed me the flexibility of choosing my own audio system and monitor; now the iMac comes witha bigger screen and audio out so I can duplicate and yet simplify my current setup. However, if I want to eliminate the clutter of extra speakers but maintain the audio processing from my audio receiver, can I route the system audio through the audio out for processing and bring it back in through the audio in to be played by the internal speakers? If not, is there a software solution for this (either system-level 3D audio processing software or something to route the audio)?
As for audio quality, does the 24" iMac have the same internal audio system as the others in the line? How is the sound from iMac internal speakers in general? I would be adding a floorstanding woofer for bass.
Also, I also like to turn off my monitor when I'm not using it--does the iMac actually turn off the monitor when not in use, or just go into standby? It's my understanding that large monitors still use a significant amount of power in standby mode so this issue is important to me. How does the backlight look? Any problems with uneven illumination?
I understand this model is new, any information would be a big help.
    Thanks
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Core Duo 1.66, 2GB RAM

Even though it is a new model, it for the most part works the same as the early 2006 models. As for you question, you will not be able to route your audio out the iMac for processing and then reroute it to the internal speakers. You can route it out and then have what ever device doing your audio manipulation connected to external speakers.

  • Illustrator 10 (MAC) Question on shading objects

Hello. I work in Illustrator 10, on a Mac using OS X. My question is, when you draw an object, just line art, what is the best way to shade in certain sections of the object to make it look dimensional? An example would be like a cylinder of some kind, how do you do shading for that? I know this is a basic question, but I don't work in Illustrator much and I'm trying to learn some new techniques.
I would really appreciate some help.
    Thank you!

    Lynne,
You will find gradient fills to be very limited when trying to draw realistic renderings. Your cylinder example is a basic case-in-point:
Applying a linear grad fill to the side of a cylinder will make convincingly "dimensional" shading so long as the cylinder side is viewed straight-on (i.e.; its sides are parallel). But in the typical case of a perspective drawing, it will not, because you need the color ramp to taper at one of the cylinder's ends.
That's one of the most basic situations in which vector illustrators learn to use Blends for rendering realistic shading. You need to be well-versed in using Blends if you are going to become proficient in convincing all-vector illustration.
Unfortunately, the instructional documentation on blends in most vector software tends to illustrate their use with cheezy examples of creating arrays of objects awkwardly "morphing" from one shape into another. That's one use for Blends, but not very instructive for the serious illustrator trying to use Blends for realistic rendering.
Here are some of the most important tips to understand about using Blends for rendering:
    * Blends work best, and the results are more predictable/controllable when the key paths have the same number of points and the same direction. That's why using commands like Offset Path or Outline Stroke to generate the concentric paths to be used in the Blend often yield ugly "wedges", "spikes", or "wrinkles" in the shading. Instead, clone the first path, scale the clone, and then manually reposition its points.
    * Use the Specified Steps option combined with a little common sense to set the number of incremental steps in a Blend. For each Blend you construct, consider both the color and distance you are spanning. For example, just because you
can create a Blend of 256 steps between two colors, doesn't mean you should. If the distance between the two key paths is only .25", you don't need nearly that many steps, even between two radically different colors. Whose eye can discern 256 different tones across a quarter inch? By the same token, if the Blend color only spans a 10% change in color, adding a kazillion steps is not necessary to minimize the visible banding. Whose eye can discern a 1% difference in tone, regardless of distance?
    * Do not overlook that Blends can be used
with linear grad fills. For example, with a little forethought and experimentation, you can achieve sophisticated color ramps by applying different grad fills to the key paths. The grads can be of different colors with same direction, different colors with different direction, same colors with same direction, or same colors with different direction. That technique is especially useful for high-reflectance surfaces like metals or shiney paint. The same principle applies to number of grad color stops as that mentioned above about number of points: The results are more predictable/controllable if the grads being blended have the same number of color stops.
Gradient Meshes are a relatively new vector construct. They allow multiple color stops to be applied at various points freely located within a single path's interior and along its edges, allowing blending in up to 4 directions at once from each meshpoint. You can get dramatic results from them, especially for very soft, satiny surfaces. The interfaces for this feature, however, are as yet rather awkward and tedious. Path blends remain a primary mainstay for realistic shading.
