Some applications won't open after updating to OS 10.8.5

I am running the Mountain Lion on a 2009 Macbook Air. I just did an update to 10.8.5 and now some of my applications won't open. A few of the appications that no longer run are Chrome, iPhoto and all Microsoft applications.
I tried uninstalling an reinstalling the apps but that did nothing, I also tried creating a new user account to see if the problem persisted in there and it did. I then tried removing my caches folder from Library which also fixed nothing. I then tried booting it in safe mode and the applications successfully opened in there.
I obviously can't just boot my Macbook up in safe mode whenever I need to use it so if anyone knows how this problem could be solved? They were all functioning normally before I did the most recent update of OS.
I have tried repairing the disk permissions but that resulted in no change also. I do not have the start up disk for Mountain Lion so reinstalling the OS is not possible, nor is booting from disk.
I'm in my final year of college, in the middle of my final year project I REALLY need this fixed.

When I try to open iPhoto, Unity, Chrome or a few others it gives me the same error each time. "iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem. Check with the developer to make sure iPhoto works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X"
But that doesn't make sense because I just updated the OS and all my applications are up to date also. I've tried reinstalling, no joy though.

Applications won't open, among other things

My MacBook is falling apart...first the wireless stops working (similarly to others), then the backlight goes out, and now my applications have gone haywire...
First, I tried to install the iTunes 9.0.2 update and the install failed and corrupted my iTunes so that it no longer works (I have this posted on another thread). I have tried to redownload and install multiple times and it tells me there is an error in the install. The I tried to install it again from the software update, along with a system update and both had errors installing. I tried doing them separately and they still wouldn't work. This was last Thursday. I was put of town and didn't use my MacBook until today, but when I turned it on, I discovered that half my applications won't open -- mail, safari, iChat, adium, picasa, to name a few. The software update won't open from the pull down menu, but I can get to it from the system preferences.
Also, now it tells me there are no updates, when the two that failed should still show up.
There actually seems to be something wrong with the installer in general too, as now anything I try to install gives me an error...

Mac Applications won't open on startup

Whenever I start up my Macbook Pro, it's very slow when I log into my user account. It takes multiple attempts to open up programs such as Safari, Microsoft One Note, or Microsoft Word. The icon will pop up and bounce in my dock, then stop bouncing but not open. I have to right click and select "force quit" because it will tell me the application is not responding. It usually takes 4 or 5 tries before the application can start normally. If the laptop has been on a few hours, this usually won't happen.
I have tried logging in a Guest User account and everything opens up so quickly! Same thing when booting into Safe Mode and logging into my own user account. Rebooting normally, I still have this problem.
I tried following this thread but the fix seems to be user specific
All applications are up to date. This happened in Mountain Lion and now Yosemite (using 10.10 right now).

Applications won't open after software update

after i installed an automatic software update on my iBook G4, and did the restart, several applications won't open such as Safari, iTunes, iChat. I tried to reinstall the software update, but that won't open either. it just jumps up and down like normal, and then won't open. after i try again, it jumps only once. what the heck is happening??? and i'm not very computer smart so dumb it up for me

Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.

NSU N76 application won't open

Hi,
Installed NSU (v.1.3.85en) for N76 on my computer (Windows XP SP1). Installation was succesful, only the application won't open. Intro screen starting application pops up but nothing else. Anybody experienced this problem too or has a solution?

Applications won't open after Quicktime Update...and fix won't work!

I'm having the same problem as many others: after the recent Quicktime update most of my applications won't open.
I've followed the instructions from Apple at

However, when I do the "sudo" prebinding thing, I get this:

Why would this be covered under warranty? There is nothing wrong with the device, it simply needs to be restored.
As already stated twice in this thread, disable ALL security software on the computer and restore the device.

Applications Won't Open After Charging/Updating iPod

I downloaded several applications to my iPod Touch from the App store on my iPod. Then, I charged my iPod on my computer, downloaded the latest iPod update, and now the applications won't open on my iPod. When I press the application button, it goes to that app's opening screen and then goes right back to my iPod's main screen. What's the deal? Thanks!

This problem just appeared on my son's iPod Touch. I reset the iPod to it's factory settings. I did NOT restore back to my saved settings. When it was restored, I installed each downloaded application one at a time until I discovered which one was corrupting the operating system.

Applications won't open

A few of my applications will not open when I click their icon in the dock, the Finder or files created by them. The applications that won't open are Quicken 2004, Appleworks 6, Internet Explorer, and MacLink Plus Deluxe. I recently downloaded some software using software update and the problem seemed to start after that but not absolutely sure. There are no error messages or anything like that. The apps blink or jump for a split second but the app name never appears in the top menu.
I've tried starting from the System Software CD and using it's Disc Utility to repair permissions and the Hard Disc to no avail. Someone suggested that the ITunes update may be interfering with the Disc Utility software and to fix it I shold remove the Receipts folder from the Library folder, start up from the System software CD , run disc utility, reboot and put the Receipts folder back where it was. I tried all this and nothing improved. All my other applications, both MAC native and otherwise are running fine. Any suggestions? This is driving me crazy as I need to use the Quicken virtually daily. Fortunately I have an Imac with OS 10.3.9 also and I can use it for the time being but it can't go with me when I travel. I also down loaded the same updates to the Imac and all of those applications are working fine on that machine.

Preview application won't open - "1712"

My Preview application on my mac book pro (Lion OS X) won't open any pdf or jpeg documents. It just says ' the application Preview can't be opened. -1712'
I tried deleting the Preview.plist file as recommended in a previous discussion but the application still won't open.
Any other suggestions?

Restart. If an application won't quit and prevents restarting, select
 ▹ Force Quit...
from the menu bar, then select the frozen application from the list and press return. As a last resort, force a shutdown by holding down the power button for a few seconds. Then press it again briefly to start up. Test.

System applications won't open OSX 10.9 Maverics

Hi there, I'm running osx 10.9 on my mac book. A few days ago I've decided to do some cleaning with some kind of registry cleaner app. Next day I've realised that some of the build in apps (like app store, terminal, preview, text edit, calendar, system update, mail etc.) won't open anymore. When I click on particular app the display just blinks and nothing is actually loading in. I suspect that registry cleaner I've used wiped out some crucial system files that are responsible for apps to open correctly. I've tried to instal osx Snow Leopard that I have on the DVD but the system won't let me do that as I'm running Maverics. I can't even download osx Maverics again to re-install it as my ''app store'' app won't open. I've noticed that app store is (I guess) running in the background. A few minutes ago an info “new updates are available” popped out in notification centre but when I clicked to install them the display just blinked (as it happened before) and nothing was installed. My calendar is also running correctly in notification centre but when I try to open the actual application nothing is happening. Can you please help me to find solution. Thank you

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it.

Apple applications won't open

I've tried opening Safari, software update, iPhoto and a few others, all that happens is that the icon bounce up and down on the doc for about 3 minutes then stop with out showing an arrow under it. I try to delete the application but it won't delete cause it says the Application is still open. I restart and delete it, i reinstall it and it still doesn't open. CAN ANYONE HELP!!!!

OK..lets back up a bit....can you provide some info on what type of computer and OS you are running, and what if any devices are attached to it. And finally what were you doing with the computer before all this started happening. And starting from the basics...can you boot from your current OS install disk and run the repair permisions and then the repair disk..and then repair permisions once again. Also are you up to date on all your software updates? And have you run any 3rd party disk repair utilities? Do not run Norton products....they could cause this problem. Final question....have you noticed an increase in the spinning beach ball ?
Ps...lose Limewire....I think it is possible that your volume stucture might be mucked up....and its not impossible that something you downloaded from limewire corrupted it.

Application won't open in my profile, but open and run great in a test profile

Just got a new macbook
I imported the profile from my old MAcbook and some application won't work anymore...
So I got my way to make macoffice to work again...
Now My suitcase fusion don't want to open... when i clic on the icon, it start and it ask me if I want to check for update no mather if I clic yes or no, after it close... So I try it in another profile and it work great...
I had similar issue in the past and I had to copy file from the test profile to my main profiles...
but this time it's not working...
any idea ???

I suggest to go to your profile's library and look for Application Support folder. Verify if it contains a folder matching your application. If so delete it.
Then got to Preferences folder and look for files or folder related to your application name. Delete them too.
now restart your application.
To go to your Library folder in Lion: In Finder navigate to your user folder and use the Go To menu item Go to folder and enter "Library" as it is a hidden folder in Lion.
