A few general questions from a greenhorn

Hello there,
I have a project coming up that will require the ability to
record live audio conversations. It sounds like I need FMS to
accomplish this, but which version? I'm hoping we can get by with
the $1500 version as this is the only functionality of FMS that I
will be utlilzing.
Nowthen, on to my extreme-newb questions:
If we are currently running the site with a php/mysql
backend, will FMS have the ability to just "ride on top" of what we
already have going so that we can use the audio recorcing
functionality without having to re-design our entire back-end? Will
it have access to our pre-existing session variables?
What are the pros and cons of licensing FMS vs purchasing
hosting with FMS enabled?
If a miracle occurs and I get my app working on a dev edition
of FMS, would I be looking at any headaches for porting it over to
an FMS host? (as far as configuration and other factors)
Thank you very much for any help, it is much
appreciated.

"If we are currently running the site with a php/mysql
backend, will FMS have the ability to just "ride on top" of what we
already have going so that we can use the audio recorcing
functionality without having to re-design our entire back-end?
- Yes this is a drop in solution for you. Your flash audio
recorder (embeded in your php application) will just communicate
with the flash server. No retooling of your php is needed.
"Will it have access to our pre-existing session variables?"
- Since the recorder would be embeded in your php application
I dont think you would need to pass session variables into it but
it is possible.
"What are the pros and cons of licensing FMS vs purchasing
hosting with FMS enabled?"
- Hosted solutions have a recurring cost compared to
licensing and running it yourself.
"If a miracle occurs and I get my app working on a dev
edition of FMS, would I be looking at any headaches for porting it
over to an FMS host? (as far as configuration and other factors)"
- There should be no headaches since your app is simple. The
main factor I would see is just storage limits on a hosted server.
Hope this helps.

  • Internet/General questions from a Mac newbie

    Hey there. Well, after spending my whole life on a PC, I've decided to switch over to Mac. I'll be going off to college in the fall, and so I went with the Macbook Pro.
    Alright, to the questions. I've always only had ONE computer in my house. And so, I have one cable modem attached to it, no router. I want to get on the net on my MBP just in the upcoming months before I'm off to college, where they'll have plenty of net connection options.
    So my question is: should I go with wireless? If I do this, would I need to get a wireless router? How exactly does it work, i.e. do I plug just any cable cord into it, and bang, wireless throughout my house? I was looking into the Linksys WRT54G for this, but I hear mentions of Airport Extreme. I guess I'm just pretty confused by routers in general.
    Now, my main computer is downstairs, but I'll want to use the laptop upstairs. There's a cable cord up there...can I somehow use that to connect to a box or anything to connect as an ethernet plug? Will that be much faster than wireless?
    I have an EVDO phone with DUN that I plan on using if none of those options work out. Will the previous methods be much faster than using the phone via bluetooth or USB?
    I'm obsessed with speed.
    That's it for the internet portion...but I'm going to throw in a few extra questions instead of starting a whole different thread; they're pretty miscellaneous.
    If I want to transfer files from my old computer to this one, what's the best way to do that? Could I (or should I) just access them remotely? You can point me to a thread where this is located if that's easier and already answered.
    Last one. I want to use boot camp. I have a Windows XP Home CD...but I've heard you NEED the CD to have SP2 on it. Mine does not. Could I just use the one I have, and install sp2 once windows is installed? If not, I'd need to get a brand new copy of Windows Home or Pro? Are there advantages to Pro over Home, if I go that route (I hear talk of dual-core...)?
    Thank you so much, these are very important (yet way too plentiful) questions.

    This is really very simple despite the fact that the others dragged the thread off in some direction.
    So my question is: should I go with wireless? If I do
    this, would I need to get a wireless router? How
    exactly does it work, i.e. do I plug just any cable
    cord into it, and bang, wireless throughout my house?
    I was looking into the Linksys WRT54G for this, but I
    hear mentions of Airport Extreme. I guess I'm just
    pretty confused by routers in general.
    Apple sometimes makes up their own cutesy names that are confusingly different than what everybody else calls something. AirPort Extreme is merely Apple's brand of 802.11g, which is a standard all new wireless routers support, including Linksys.
    If you have a cable modem, you can use an Ethernet cable to plug in a wireless router, which will take your cable modem signal and blast it all over the house. At that point, you are like an internet cafe. Your Mac or PC laptop should recognize the signal and you're off and running (subject to the limitations of wireless, which you should know about since you're obsessed with speed).
    I very much doubt that a second cable modem is a practical option. You will probably have to pay for a second cable account. The router is the standard solution, because it takes one connection and routes it to multiple computers.
    Now, my main computer is downstairs, but I'll want to
    use the laptop upstairs. There's a cable cord up
    there...can I somehow use that to connect to a box or
    anything to connect as an ethernet plug? Will that be
    much faster than wireless?
    A good wireless router like the Linksys WRT54G also has wired Ethernet ports. You can plug your desktop into that. Your desktop and cable modem are downstairs, so it will make sense to plug the wireless router into the cable modem and connect the desktop to the router. That way, the router will do the job it's designed for: routing the cable modem signal to both the desktop and the wireless transmitter.
    You could possibly plug and play, but it will be best for you to read the router manual to learn how to open the router's internal home page in your Mac or PC web browser and look through the router settings. If you are concerned about network security, then you will also want to turn on the password for the wireless portion of your network.
    I'm sure you could use that EVDO phone...but wouldn't the Internet airtime cost a lot of money? The speed depends on your phone connection. I hear it varies. The cable modem is almost certainly faster, though.
    If I want to transfer files from my old computer to
    this one, what's the best way to do that? Could I (or
    should I) just access them remotely? You can point me
    to a thread where this is located if that's easier
    and already answered.
    You can use the network wizard in Windows to set up a share and then get to it from the Mac, or turn on file sharing on the Mac and get to it from the PC. My Macs and PC can all share files when needed.
    Last one. I want to use boot camp. I have a Windows
    XP Home CD...but I've heard you NEED the CD to have
    SP2 on it. Mine does not. Could I just use the one I
    have, and install sp2 once windows is installed?
    This is not official word but I hear you MUST have SP2 on the CD.
    not, I'd need to get a brand new copy of Windows Home
    or Pro? Are there advantages to Pro over Home, if I
    go that route (I hear talk of dual-core...)?
    Try this comparison.

  • A few simple questions from a new Iphone user

    Hi a few simple questions, just got an iphone 2g - 2nd hand so not really sure what to expect. Anyway I guess my first question is about mine sometimes being a little slow - when I look at contacts and sometimes when sending a txt it slows down/freezes a little - normal?
    Secondly Edge - I havent used it much but when I have its been painfully slow, is this normal - is it always really slow - cause I had read despite not being 3g Edge was actually pretty fast - what exactly is data roaming by the way? I mean I have been switched off as basically I dont wanna use the internet till next month when they change my contract to one I get unlimited access on - is that right?
    Im having a problems syncing videos to it - it just wont sync some but will others and Im not sure why - theyre same file type and they used to sync to my ipod touch but now they wont for some reason
    Cheers

    I have the origina iPhone.
    Downloaded 2.0, synced phone with everything UNchecked. Installed 2.0. Synced with all the options checked to reload my data. The iPhone has been great. Noticed a little lag when I opened contacts. Installed the new upgrade, and everything is back, no lag.
    Edge is Edge and nothing more. It is slow compared to a strong 3g signal. But is liveable most of the time. Heavy traffic can slow it down to barely usable.
    My four wheel drive club has a web site with a large photo section. I was standing out in the middle of parking lot in San Jose, Ca and showing a friend some photos. It opens up a page of small picts to choose from. Select a print and it enlarges, He was amazed at how fast they appeard. Especially given the quantity of photos.

  • Few simple questions from newbie

    I'm new to Java, but i've worked a lot with action script... it didn't help a lot :) Here are my few beginner questions:
    What does: public, static, abstract, void... and other things mean in front of the class name?
    How can i call variables from another classes: if i have one class that does one thing and stores the result in a variable, how can i use that variable from a different class?
    How can i call the input window to enter the value for variable? I've tried with importing "io.inputstream" library, and used the "extend" thing, but i still cant call the input window?

    I came to Java from ActionScript too, and I must say having ActionScript as your first programming language does NOT make it easy to learn other languages. I was incredibly lost when starting with Java.
    What does: public, static, abstract, void... and
    other things mean in front of the class name?You'll find all that in the Java Tutorial
    How can i call variables from another classes: if i
    have one class that does one thing and stores the
    result in a variable, how can i use that variable
    from a different class?To use the variable from another class, you need to make a call to the class. Let's say you're in ClassB; you would make a call to a ClassA variable by doing something such as:
    ClassA.myVar.myMethod();
    How can i call the input window to enter the value
    for variable? I've tried with importing
    "io.inputstream" library, and used the "extend"
    thing, but i still cant call the input window?I recommend reading the tutorial before you try anything like that.

  • IMac 21.5" performance on COD4 and few other general questions from a newbi

    I'm a current and long time PC owner who is sick of messing with registry problems, performance issues and viruses.
    I am strongly considering the purchase of a 21.5" iMac, but have some reservations as to whether I may have performance issues playing Call of Duty 4 using Parallels or Boot Camp. Will the 21.5" machine with the upgraded 256K video card handle this and other games OK? Other than that, I am a light user who mainly surfs the web, sends email and tracks finances with quicken. Games and some video are about the heaviest applications I use.
    Currently on a 3 year old Pentium Duo Dell with 2GB ram, 512mb Nvidia video card.

    I'm just extremely concerned that the 21.5" iMac won't have enough juice for multi-tasking such as playing COD4 while surfing the net. Even my hopped up gaming PC (older dual core with 512K video card) struggles at times. I'm wanting to make the jump to Mac, just afraid of spending almost $1500+ and winding up with worse performance than I already have.
    Unfortunately, the nearest Mac retailer is over an hour away from me so there isn't a real chance to put one through it's paces in person.

  • A few general questions

    Hi there everyone
    I have a few questions i need a bit of help on
    1. I came to the realization yesterday that my cpu was not running at the correct speed, since i am a little slow at times. It is a Athlon 2000+ 1.6 Ghz, but the cpu was running at 1.2, so I pushed up the fsb from 100 to 133...Now my temps are running 5-8c higher (idle 44-47c and to 49-53c at load playing Neverwinter Nights).
    Is that normal?
    2. I bought some extra fans to see if this cools the case better. I have now 2 in front (intake) , one in back (out), and one on the left side vent...Question is on that vent is it better to put that one as intake or outake? It is directly horizontal to my CPU (where I have a volcano 9 cpu cooler).
    3. How often is it good to run the cooler xp on PC Alert? I was thinking I could run that quite often, especially when playing games cause it cuts the temp down to 28-30c!! Would that put too much stress on your fans? How often can I run that?
    4. I have the kt4-ultra 6590, I installed the IDE3 drive as a 13 gig IBM deskstar, I have read up a lot on RAID, but I do not know what I do with this drive....None of the faqs really tell you, except a lot of technical jargon. My question is thus: May I use this drive to install applications and games? Or should it be left empty or for backup or performance write booster? I have two 40 gig seagates as primary and slave on IDE1 so i am not really hurting for space i was just wanting to know if this thing can be useful.
    My Thanks to anyone who can answer these questions for me

    Well, Allied PSU's were once considered to fairly good for most systems. These days, they really lack the power output needed by modern systems.
    3.3v 24a +5v 35a +12v 0.8a Also, the 3.3V looks to be a little low, at 24A, and this could be the reason for the alarm by PC Alert. Gaming with a modern system will show any weakness in the PSU. You probably never had this happen before, due to the CPU drawing a little less power while running @100FSB.
    Keep an eye on this, and if it continues, a new PSU should be considered, but remember that "400W" means very little when it comes to most PSU's. High amp ratings are what matter. Most people here agree that Antec and Enermax PSU's are among the best brands.

  • A few 8100 questions from a new guy.

    I just purchased a used 8100, and have a couple of questions.
    Is there anyway I lock just the message application, instead of the whole phone?
    Also, when I tried to set up my E-mail it said that there was already a different account for this pin number. What can I do to reset that and set up my own?

    In BlackBerry there is no option to separately lock one single application. You can think of any 3rd party apps for this.
    As you purchased an used device you need to collect the user name and password for Email setting apps from the original owner. Your carrier might not help you as this will violate the original user  rights. If the original owner forgets the password as well then ask him to call his carrier and identify himself and make it unlocked for you.

  • A few general questions about sequences, framerates (fps), audio sources

    If I create a sequence in Pro that is 23.976fps, matching my audo from Canon T2i shot with 24fps... and an audio with 48hz... and then if I import an audio (music) with 44hz..
    does it affect my output settings?
    Another question. If i have 23.976fps sequence, and I output it for Vimeo (which they say should be 30fps) does it have ANY effect on video/audio synchronzation?

    PrPro can handle most common Audio Sample Rates, like 44.1KHz @ 16-bit, and will Conform those Assets to edit in a 48KHz 16-bit Project. Other than an extra moment of the Conforming process, should not be an issue. This ARTICLE will give you some background on Conforming and Indexing.
    Good luck,

  • A few basic questions from a new user - backups, moving files, sharing

    I'm a Mac user considering getting an iPad. I'm hoping someone can clue me in to some basic aspects of the experience:
    1) are backups easy? can you "clone" it (the way I do with my desktop and laptop) so that everything (content, settings, preferences, etc.) can be restored exactly in the event something happens to it?
    2) how does one move files to it? Specifically, PDFs - I have a ton of PDFs I plan to be reading on this thing. Does it show up as a drive (drag-and-drop) when connected to my desktop machine, or does it work through a special conduit or? Does it have a filesystem we can see?
    3) is there any notion of "users" - can multiple people share it and have their own sets of preferencs settings/content?
    4) is the iPad 2 date still best estimated as April? I need it for a trip in mid-March and I don't want to buy the 1st model if the second is coming out shortly thereafter. Is there any likelihood of having it be available in the first week of March? If not, is there a good place (on-line) to rent one for a week perhaps?
    thanks in advance!
    Mike

    1, yes they are easy, but they are not a clone. When connected to iTunes on your computer you just tell it to backup. That will backup your notes, settings, app data, but not synced data (i.e. not your music, films or contacts and calendars synced from your computer).
    2, via iTunes, not as a drive. PDFs can be dragged into iTunes and then synced to the iPad to go into the (free downloadable) iBooks app. Alternatively you can buy an app like Goodreader which allows you to transfer PDFs wirelessly from your computer (can also be used to read/store PDFs emailed as attachments).
    3, no. There is only one set of options. If you have children (or even other adults) then you can set a passcode to restrict access to, for example, Safari, iTunes, or the ability to install and delete other apps. But it's basically a single user setup.
    4, speculation as to what Apple may, or may not, be planning is prevented by the terms of use of these forums. All that can be said here is that no new version has been announced, and when/if one is it will be on the apple.com frontpage. You should ask yourself whether the current one meet most, if not all, of your requirements, not whether some unannnounced item might.

  • General questions from an absolute beginner

    Dear all,
    my employer would like to have me set up an online help for our software product. Since I am in the process of converting the current documentation to FrameMaker I have lightly issued the idea to use RoboHelp since we have the technical communications suite 2... I am saying "lightly" because I am freaking out a bit ever since I have tried getting into it, needless to say I have not been very successful and I was not able to find any "classroom in a book"-like help. I didnt find the Adobe help section for RoboHelp very... helpful, I just felt overwhelmed with all the information i didn't feel I needed at the point I was at. Is there a step by step documentation of some sorts for the absolute beginner who does not even have any xml or html skills worth mentioning (I am not sure to what extend those might be needed)?
    Also from an advanced user's point of view, how developed will my html/xml skills have to be in order to really understand and get the best of this program? Depending on this I might or might not be able to book a class but it won't be of any use if i need skills I dont have (yet) in order to even understand the program. In the worst case I might have to do some research on alternatives, although I feel stupid, since the tool is available and im not sure if better alternatives would be easier to use as well...
    I am happy for any advice, thank you!

    Hi Jeff,
    right now the problem is more "Getting Started" and im sure once I am at the point where I need to import the FM content this will be a helpful suggestion! But for now I was more wondering on whether there was a step-by-step thingy to help me get into it to begin with and whether i need a lot of xml/html to use RoboHelp...

  • Few general questions

    I was just wondering I downlaoded the mac version of msn and ClamxAv and both are on my desktop is there anyway to remove them from the desktop? also if anyone knows if it is possible to get photos off my ipod and put them onto my macbook thanx

    I used to wonder about that myself, but when i use my ipod in disk mode its not possible to get the photos synced onto it through itunes. the only way to get anything in and out of the ipod is both through disk mode, and having the files saved to the ipod straight onto the drive as you would an external hard drive, not loaded through the itunes interface.

  • General Questions from a Canadian!

    Hello,
    So before I spend the money to call EE and setup my account I just want to make sure this is posible.. It's tough to get around the website so I'd like to confirm here. I have a Galaxy S5 with Virgin Mobile I'll be getting unlocked within the next week.  I'll be using it from London to Spain to France to Italy then not sure where in September.   I was planning on getting the 1GB Pay as You Go plan (50 texts/50 mins) with a SIM card from EE.  I'll do the roaming add-on and probably won't use too much data once I've left England.   I'd just like to make sure this is possible?  I'm trying to connect the dots all around the website and it seems like it is...
    Also, am I required to pay for the SIM Card?  Can it be shipped to Canada so I have it for when I land?
    Thanks for any help!

    The cost of the actual SIM card will be free.  EE won't ship abroad sorry so you will have to grab a SIM pack once you arrive in the UK.  If you are arriving at London Heathrow there are vending machines in the arrivals halls selling a variety of U.K. mobile PAYG SIM packs. The ones in the vending machines are pre-loaded with credit so you pay the cost of the top-top there and then buts it's ready to go as soon as you insert the SIM card into your device.
    Just make sure you get the correct sized SIM card though EE do now tend to issue multi-SIM cards which are all 3 SIM sizes in one.
    You can also get PAYG SIM packs in most supermarkets or newsagents.  These tend to cost around £1 but then you will also need to top them up.  The SIM card packs come wit ha top-up card and you simply hand this top-up card with your money to the retailer who will swipe the card and that automatically tops up your SIM.
    Roaming should work automatically with all PAYG plans.

  • A few General Questions about Layouts

    Hey.
    I'm pretty new to Swing so I don't know much. My first question is do you have to use a Layout Manager to organize components on a JPanel? Is there no pixel way to do it? Secondly, for layouts, specifically for GridBagLayouts, is there any way to display the grid for developing purposes?
    Thanks in advance.

    I'm sorry but the above code did not work. Even though I added the components, they still did not show. Anything I missed? Thanks.
    My code is below:
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class SwingTest {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            // Create application frame.
            JFrame frame = new JFrame();
            frame.setSize(500,500);
            JPanel foo = new JPanel(null);
         This 1 arugment constructor takes the layout manager as the argument.
         You can alternatively do this:
         JPanel foo = new JPanel();
         foo.setLayout(null);
         JLabel label1 = new JLabel("Label 1");
         label1.setLocation(10, 10);
         JLabel label2 = new JLabel("Label 2");
         label2.setLocation(10, 50);
         foo.add(label1);
         foo.add(label2);
         frame.add(foo);
            // Show frame.
            frame.setVisible(true);
    }

  • A few general questions relating to H55-GD65 and core i5 750 Lynnfield

    I finally made the jump from AMD to intel, and DDR3 ram, been reading the forums for around 3hours, been a member for 2hrs. Been building systems since Redhat 9.0 came out, so Don't expect any thing as funny as Quote
    because I want to know the temperature of the IOH without the heatsink.
    Would it be better to run 2gig X 4 = 8gigs of RAM, or 4gigs X4 = 16 gigs?
    Concerning dual channel mode, must I buy them in matched sets, or can I buy one stick at a time, obviously buying the same exact kind each time?
    To run DDR3 1600mhz on this board will I need to set the voltage/timings manually, or will it auto detect?
    From what I've read the pcie controller is on die, and with the i5's you can only run 1@ X16 or dual X8, am I correct?
    If I get a pcie x8 sas raid controller card, will it affect graphics performance?
    Also this will be my first attempt at dual booting sata hard drives.
    Would it be difficult to have win7 x64 on the mobo's onboard sata, and linux (either Mandriva, Open Suse, or gentoo if my insomnia is still acting up)
    on the sas card?
    Edit: Almost forgot, has any one else had issues with the onboard NIC dropping connection? It never happens when It is in use, only when i walk away from it, as an example Wow's latest 4gig patch had 900megs to go on a 1.1megabyte connection, upon going to sleep and locking the computer windows key-L, woke up with it having 500megs remaining and as soon as i opened my browser my connection picked right back up

    Its better to use 2x4GB, to lessen the strain on the memorycontroller and yes, you'll have to set it to 1600MHz yourself most of the time.
    The memorycontroller is rated for 1066/1333MHz, so anything beyond is considered overclocking and thus the controller will not set those higher timings automatically.
    Do you really need 8GB? For office, internet and gaming, normal homeusage, 4GB is more then enough, 8GB is nice if you render a lot or if you use cad/cam and photoshop stuff

    Yes it runs @x8 when running 2 vga's, or in your case if you use a PCIe x8 card, but the impact is none, even the GTX480 and the HD5970 are not capped when @x8, so no worries there.

    I have had dual and even triple boot since XP and never had any issues, be sure to write the different os to different hd's or partitions. About Linux on a sascard, no idea, Im not familiar with that.

    Check your windows powersavings settings, maybe it turns it off when in standby/sleep mode.
