A Few More Quick Questions

Alright, first, I'm just wondering, is there anyway to charge my iPod on antoher computer without it affecting the data currently on thye iPod? If I install iTunes on that computer and there's nothing in it, then wouldn't that automatically delete my current data?
Secondly, is there much harm to battery life by playing WAV files and Apple Lossless files? I collect bootlegs of Dave Matthews and Pearl Jam and about 8 albums (roughly 125 songs) are in WAV and about 600 Songs are in Apple Lossless.
Thirdly, what's the best way to go about "conditioning" the battery so that I get the most out of a charge? Also, in terms of battery time, does it include times when music is paused or stopped or is it only when music is playing? For example, when somebody says that at first charge, you can get 5-6 hours of use, does that mean 5-6 hours of listening or simply 5-6 hours before the iPod needs recharging?
Thanks.

You can charge it on another PC by changing your settings to manual updating, that way it attempt to autosync, see here for details: http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/tutorial/ipgettingstartedt3.html
Alternatively get an separate charger.
Also using Apple Lossless won't harm your battery it will just give you less listening time with a charge because the file size will generally mean that the iPod has to access the hard drive more often than reading from the cache.

  • A few more Solaris questions

I'm sure this isn't the best place to post this, but I currently have a file server running Solaris 11 with a raid-z2 pool and I'm building a new vmware server out of some parts I've managed to get some good deals on might I add.
I'm building on a supermicro x8dt3-f board that has an LSI controller on board with a pair of xeon 5570's and 48gb ram. The processors and ram actually came from a sun blade that was tossed out for recycling, sadly the box had never been opened, but i got these for pennies on the dollar, so i'm happy
I'd like to move the current Solaris file server into a VM on the new ESXi 5.1 host and passthrough the LSI controller.
I've been reading, and reading and reading and i find the more i read, the more questions I have and the less clear some of the answers are getting.
First, from what I gather, Solaris 11 has only been added to the supported guest list in ESXi with the recent esxi 5.1 version as I understand? So all should be fine here? Can someone confirm?
second, i've read about issues with LSI controllers under solaris 11. Is this something that has been addressed in 11.1?
Third, trying to find the best method to conver the physical system to virtual under ESXi
The first thing I plan on doing is backing up my data from the pool, though it will be scattered across a few systems. Then I plan on exporting the pool to move the disks physically to the new controller in the VM. The question I have here, is will the share flags and permissions be retained when I import the pool? or do I have to redo all that?
But then, what's the best method to move it to a VM? The one document I see come up the most is moving a physical solaris system into a zone on another system. Can it be transferred to the global zone? Could I do a new install in a VM, and move the existing install to the global zone, import my pool and call it a daY?
Or do I dd the OS disk, convert the image and drop it into vmware, get the hardware working, and then import the pool?
Or is there a better way? Has anyone got any online docs in mind that may help specifically with this migration? everything i'm finding is scattered, maybe i'm not looking for the right things but I could use some pointers if anyone has suggestions.
I suppose I should note, i have it integrated with an Active directory, this is why i'm worried about permissions being retained when i import the pool
I just want this to go as quickly and smoothly as possible, with as little headache as possible. it's my home setup, so realistically it takes the time it takes as long as things go smooth

I know this may not be the answer you are looking for, but I think you are making it more difficult than it needs to be.
One other option is to leave your Solaris Storage server on the bare metal of this new beast of a machine you are piecing together. Then, use VirtualBox 4.2.6 which is support quite well in Solaris to run whatever virtual machines you where intending ESXi to be used for.
This way you have the fastest possible storage setup without the issues of hardware passthrough. And the fast storage now benefits the VMs running on it. Not to mention the other neat options now of running lzjb compression for the VMs. either using zvols for the VMs, or just virtualbox vdi files sitting on a compressed zfs filesystem.
As far as the LSI 1068E controller goes, their website only shows drivers for Solaris 10. So unless Solaris 11 has the drivers built in, you may not be able to use that controller. Believe me I feel your pain in this one.. I have the d#$$!est time finding good SAS HBAs for Solaris 11.1 and the few I did find had questionable drivers. Areca 1320 cards seem to work well, as do Adaptec 64xx and 68xx raid cards. LSI has a new line that supposedly works with Solaris 11.
My advice is to try a baremetal install of Solaris 11.1 on the new machine and see if you can recognize drives on the LSI controller, if not then use the 6 onboard SATA ports if that is enough for the drives. Otherwise purchase an Areca 1320 which is only like 230 bucks for the 8 port version. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816151116R

  • A few more general questions

    1) How is everyone testing the temperature their computers are running at? Is there a utility on the computer that does that? Sometimes my macbook runs very warm to the touch. When should get concerned?
    2) I have my hard drive partitioned. HD #1 has a capacity of 47gb. HD #2 has a capacity of 8.50gb. The hard drive is supposed to be 60gb, so where did the extra 5 gbs go?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hard drive manufacturers quote drive sizes based on a megabyte being equal to 1,000,000 bytes rather than the correct value of 1,048,576 bytes. Consequently a drive said to have 60 GBs (60,000,000,000 bytes) will actually have 55.879 GBs using the correct value for a megabyte. When the drive is formatted there's a slight loss of space that is allocated to the directory and the partition and disk block data further reducing the net available storage space to around 55.5 GBs for your particular drive.
So your "extra 5 GBs" hasn't gone anywhere if you use the "correct" arithmetic.
As for heat all MacBooks and MacBook Pros run very hot. This is not abnormal. Core temperatures for the CPU will typically run between 45-50C during idle (20-30C during sleep) and can reach as high as 85-95C under full load. Thermal shutdown is set for 100C. These figures are all within Intel specifications. Case temperatures can get very warm. Your User Guide has a specific warning about the heat.

  • Hey, sorry, but one more quick question... noise at startup

sorry but i'm a relatively new mac (and laptop) user, and I have been unable to find a way to stop the noise the computer makes (through the speakers, like the noise it should make) when I turn it on. This is true for both the windows and mac side of my computer. Whenever it is happening I try hitting F3 or F4 but that doesn't seem to work.
Thanks a lot for any assistance!

Here are two options you can try.

  • One more quick question

You said that I could install a Cloud subscription to CS6 on two computers.  What happens if I replace one of the computers?  Does the agreement transfer, or do I lose the use of CS6 on my new machine?

You can run Help --> Deactivate in any of the programs, then sign out of the application manager. Then you can install AAM on the new machine and sign in again.

  • A few quick questions about publishing for iPhone/Android

I'm currently developing an iPhone/Android game in CS5 and I just have a few quick questions.  If anyone can answer even one or two I'd really appreciate it
1- I'm developing using a 320 x 480 resolution for the iphone.  When I tested it, the status bar on the top of the screen makes the edges disappear.  How should I turn off the status bar?  And if I can't what resolution should I use?
2- The performance is a little slow, and the game isn't very intense at all.  What's a good way to improve performance?
3- For Android, what should I do for the resolution?  Is there a standard resolution or do I have to have multiple resolutions for multiple devices?
4- Finally, is it worth getting the free trial of CS5.5 before I publish?  Is there anything in there that will be a huge improvement over CS5?
    All help is appreciated

    1. Publish in fullscreen
    2. Use bitmaps, cache all bitmaps, use minimized looping structure etc.

    3. Android: 480 * 800

  • Oracle 10gR2 Dataguard quick question

    Hi -
Just a quick question about Oracle 10gR2 Dataguard. I'm in the process of creating dataguard standby, which is running for few hours and could take few more hours because of the size and the standby's network latency, and i'm using OMS to create the DG. I'm in a situation now to create new tablespace(A) and also one more datafile to the existing tablespace(B).
Question is: How would this new tablespace and the new datafile in the existing tablespace affect the DG standby which is about to finish in couple hours? Will the DG pickup the new changes from the primary? Or, will it be done with error from the mismatch of the number of files? The issue is that i can't wait for the standby creation to be done as the additional tablespace and datafile requirement is production critical, and should be added right away.
note: standby_file_management is set to auto.
    Thanks for your response.
    regards.

Your post is a bit vague, as OMS is an acronym for Oracle Management Server, which is a service only.
If you would have stated you are using Database Control, or RMAN duplicate database, the picture would have been much clearer.
Database Control uses rman duplicate database.
Recovery is the mandatory implicit last step of this procedure to pick up all changes since you started the duplicate.
One word of warning: Network latency is one thing to avoid like hell in a standby configuration.
It might even slow down your production database.

  • Two quick questions about Library after moving beginning on a new computer

    Hi there,
I just moved from Windows to Mac, meaning I had to move my iTunes library from the old PC to my new MBA.
Just a couple of quick questions.
    1. When I started iTunes on my new Mac, in the preferences I directed the media folder to the folder with all my itunes music/podcasts etc, and then I imported the Library XML file.  Is this incorrect? Should I have imported a different file? Should I have used the itl file instead?
If so, should I delete the library and start again?  (if this is the case, please suggest the best way of doing this without affecting my media)
    - a kind of sub-question to this one:  some of the media files arent showing up in the iTunes library, but they are in the media folder on the ext HDD.  Is there a way I can find out which ones havent been recognized by iTunes?  Whats the best way of getting them in to my library?
    2. Pretty much half of my podcasts have not been loaded in the new iTunes.  The ones that havent were ones that I subscribed to on my iPhone, whereas the ones that show up in iTunes were ones I downloaded from iTunes.  When I connect my iPhone and sync it with iTunes, will those podcasts show up in iTunes?  Or is there a risk that they will be deleted from my iPhone?
    Cheers,

The .xml is lacking some information such as ratings, date added, and play count.  Using the .itl includes this information but cannot be imported using the method you did.
A complete library is everything in the iTunes folder.  By using the method you did you left the artwork behind in the artwork folder on the other machine.
Selecting the media folder in preferences does not get iTunes to recognize the media.  All it does is tell iTunes to start storing new media in that location.
Using the method I outlined nothing will be missed (with the exception of WMA) because you aren't rebuilding your library, you are using the one that already exists.
You don't have to re-copy everything as long as you get the stuff you missed and re-assemble it all as it was before except not on the Mac.

  • Syncing Apps from Iphone to Itunes and vice versa, quick question.

Hello, so I had a small question to ask about transferring apps from both the iphone to itunes.
Basically, I downloaded an app from the app store ON my iphone.
I've made a lot of progress and have a lot of data in this app.
The(Sync app) box was never checked on my itunes, so I transferred my purchases from my iphone to my itunes, and now i've downloaded a few more apps (over 20mb) ON itunes that I want to put on my iphone.
Thing is, when I click "sync apps" it gives me a warning saying something along the lines of "Apps in itunes will replace all in iphone, including data"
Now, i've already transferred my purchases, so all the apps from my phone are on itunes, but if I sync, will I lose the DATA in my apps on my iphone? Or will the data remain in those apps?
Basically, will syncing my apps replace my settings/data/progress of the apps I have on my iphone?

There is no data in the apps themselves. Your app data is stored in the backup file iTunes creates. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
From Page 179 of http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iphone_userguide.pdf, "You can reinstall an app and restore its data as long as you backed up iPhone with iTunes on your computer. (If you try to delete an app that hasn’t been backed up to your computer, an alert appears.) To retrieve the app data, you must restore iPhone from a backup containing the data."
So, make a backup before you click the "Sync apps button. Then, you may have to restore your phone from that backup to reload the data.

  • A few "technical" iPhone questions

Believe it or not, I'm not going to complain about the price drop!
Instead, I've owned my iPhone for a couple of days now, and have a few burning questions:
    1) Does the iPhone have the ability to keep nagging me that I missed a call?
    2) Many times, when I make or receive a call, either I cannot hear the other end, or the other end cannot hear me. It's like mute is on, but it isn't. Has anyone else had this problem? (It not just between iPhones, either, it's happened with me calling a Verizon number).
    3) Is there any way to have the contacts screen display the records my the way Outlook says to display (file as) a contact? If I have Jim Jones at Acme Computer, I'd like the contact on the iPhone to be under Acme Computer, not Jim Jones. If I have 10 people at Acme Computer in my contacts, doesn't it make sense to have them grouped together instead of spread all over the alphabet?
    4) Is there any way to put some of the "nested" funtions on the main iPhone page? In other words, under PHONE, there is RECENT and VOICEMAIL. Is there a way to put those as icon on the main icon menu screen instead of having to touch, touch, touch to get to them? It sure would be nice, while driving, to just have to touch one button to get to where I want instead of having to take my eyes off the road to navigate a bunch of screens...
    Thanks for your input.

No. Not at this time. I haven't had a phone that does though.

During the two months plus I've had it, this has happened a few times. I just call them back and it's fine. This did happen occasionally with my old phone as well.

I use Apple Address Book which has a check box to designate the contact as a business instead of an individual. The listing is then alphabetized by the business name instead. Is there anything in Outlook to do this same thing? I'm not sure what would happen with more than one listing from the same business. One way I've gotten around it in Address Book is to add multiple phone numbers under the business (or household for friends/families with more than one phone number) and then create a custom phone type for each person (ie. Jim Jones cell, Jim Jones home, etc.). One other thing to keep in mind is to use Groups. If you find that your contact list is getting too crowded, create some groups in Outlook and then sync the groups to your iPhone. You could create a group that had all your contacts from "Acme Computer".
    4) Is there any way to put some of the "nested" funtions on the main iPhone page? In other words, under PHONE, there is RECENT and VOICEMAIL. So far the only keys that you can change are in the iPod portion. Give it a few more days. Navigating the screens will become second nature. I have no trouble in the car.
Good luck and enjoy your new iPhone!

  • Quick Question - Setting up Personal Domain with godaddy

    Hi there
Just a quick question to make sure I've done this correctly?
Ok, I've published my iWeb website.
I've purchased a personal domain with godaddy.
I've set up the personal domain in my mobile me account.
I then logged into my godaddy account and went to 'Total DNS Control and MX Records'
I changed the following under CNAME (Aliases)
    www web.me.com 1 Hour
and then added a new CNAME Record
    www.*******.com web.me.com 1 Hour
Have I done this all correctly?
Will it take a few hours to take effect?
Anything else I need to consider?
    Thanks for reading.
    Ross

CNAME settings can take up to 24 hours to take effect.
As long as you have forwarded your domain name to web.me.com, then it should be okay.

  • Quick question, where to put global variables

    Very quick question:
where is the best place to put global variables,
(e.g. a flag that turns on debug mode)
if they are needed by the entire application?
I'm guessing they should be placed in their own class.
But should I make them public static final constants,
    and just do Globals.MYCONSTANT
OR should i do "implements Globals" in all my other classes?
The first way seems simpler and more logical,
but in the examples for JSDT, they use the second technique.
    Any thoughts?
    thanks! =)

I would suggest either creating a properties file for your globals, or adding them to the system properties at startup. Placing items like debugging tags in your code means that you have to change the code, recompile, and rejar before your change is implemented. Using system properties means that you simply have to change your command-line options (i.e., from -Dmyapp.debug=true to -Dmyapp.debug=false).

  • Re-importing into iPhoto 06 Quick Question

    I hope.
My photos are on an external hard drive. I jogged the wire the other day during an import and stopped the import. When I next loaded up iPhoto all the photos had changed to ! , so I reimported them, which all worked fine, but it's reimported everything including the thumbnails, so I now have every picture at least twice and want to get rid of all the small sized files.
Can I do it a quick way like search for photos below a certain size or should I import from a different point? I imported from the iPhoto directory, but should I have been a bit more specific on a sub directory? I want to make sure I get the original photos and any photos I've edited.
Finally, should I delete the existing thumbnails in one of the directories before I re-import?
    Thanks

    It’s not a quick question.
so I reimported them, which all worked fine, but it's reimported everything including the thumbnails, so I now have every picture at least twice
This was not the way to go about this. You’ve now imported to a damaged database and that is inherently unstable.
There is no way to search on file size in iPhoto. You may have some luck with Duplicate Annihilator
However, do you still have the original library? If so, here’s how to start over:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Regards
    TD

  • Quick question re: Media Management

    Hey..
    quick question from a newbie.
    quick timeline.
I just finished producing a 40 minute corporate video, and its done (my first video) everything is still on my 2nd drive (projects, footage, graphics and everything...
I've already made my client 500 DVD's after using compressor.
Now this project is currently still taking up more then half of my hardrive. I want to get rid of everything but still cover my behind in case down the road, they need more. or they want to add to it and such.
    so my question is...
in addition to backing up to tape and keeping the compressed files on my computer..
If I export using Quicktime movie at the same settings of my final sequence. can I delete everything else? AS long as I keep the QT movie on my computer, is that just as good as the original project? am I able to edit from that in the future if I need to or if i need to throw it into compressor to make streaming video for the web? Is there any generation loss with that?
I know thats more then 1 question.. any help would be awesome... you guys rock! and thanks in advance

    .

If you export a quicktime movie you create a "whole" video. In other words, your transitions, clips and audio will essentiall become one long clip. You will not longer be able to eliminate music from voice for example. It will become one long track. You won't be able to take out transitions such as dissolves or wipes without taking a hunk of video on either side.
Best to delete your media and save your project and tapes. You can re-digitize later. Or buy a cheap hard drive and store it there.
