A few newbie questions...

Hi All,
I really want to get a MacBook and start composing (initially with Garage Band then hopefully Logic Express), but just had a few questions concerning using LE7 with a MacBook...
i. Can I hook up a MIDI keyboard easily enough to a MacBook?
ii. Will a 1.83Ghz/1Gig ram MacBook be beefy enough to run LE7 adequately?
Thanks in advance!
robster

1) Yes of course. If it's a midi keyboard with USB, all you need is a USB cable. Make sure there's Mac drivers for it (most of them are ok). If there's no USB plug, you'll need a midi interface. There's many of them but a very basic one like Edirol UM-1EX will work fine.
2) Yes. I used to work with Logic Express and a iBook G3 600... There's a couple of plugins, especially soft synths, that are very CPU-hungry but you can always freeze tracks. However, if you can afford it, I'd choose 2GB of RAM.

  • Few newbie questions before I buy?

I'm currently in a Moto V3 and am considering the iPhone because of the large, easy to read screen. I'm certainly not old, but due to a cataract, my eyesight isn't what it was. I've looked at most of the SmartPhones out there and quite frankly, I can't read them easily.
I am concerned that it won't meet my changing business needs, (not that the razr does either) and am wondering if any phone will? So on to my questions:
    1) Is there a limit to the number of contacts? Would 1000 names and addresses fit? Is there a way to make separate directories for personal and business?
    2) I've read there is no way to cut and paste, but is there a way to save e-mail templates?
    3) For work, we use a web based CRM, however in my PC it required the installation of version 1.4.1_02 of the Java Runtime Environment. I've read the the iphone doesn't support Java but is this something different than the Java games? If I could get into our work CRM, through Safari I could use the e-mail templates stored there.
    4) Synching contacts: I use Act! as my contact manager and e-mail client. I don't expect the iPhone to work with that, but I can export the contact I want to sync into either outlook or windows address book. I don't want todos to sync and would prefer the sync to be 'one way' only ie; WCM -> iPhone only. Is this configurable?
I've been reading this board for some time now, but using the search feature has been frustrating as I can't seem to narrow it down enough to find answers to my specific questions. Thanks for reading my long post, and Merry Christmas!

It's beginning to seem like that, but sometimes the 'heart overrules the head'. I want one and want to make it work!
I understand there's no push email, and I don't mind having the phone poll the e-mail box every 30 minutes or so. I also understand that Act won't work with it, heck I'm using Act 2000 (the last stable version) and its not supported much anyway. (I could never get it to work with my messagepad 2000 and Act for Newton)
Does the phone support multiple e-mail accounts? I could set up a new account just for prospects from the CRM and have the phone automatically poll this account and then manually pull from my main mail account only as needed?
Finally, and this may sound stupid, but I'm assuming that it only downloads the message headers and let's me decide to bring in the whole message at my discretion?
Also silly question, but deleting messages from the phone leaves the messages on the server for later download on my PC....right?

  • A few newbie questions...Please help!

I'm brand new here - considering getting a Droid Incredible.
Please help me with the following (albeit somewhat random!) questions...
When I set up the phone, I only want to use Gmail. Will Gmail automatically be made my default email program, or will the regular HTC Mail program also be loading my Gmail? I'd rather not have conflicting notifications.
Voicemail. Thinking of getting regular Basic Voicemail. Do I get notifications every time I get a voicemail? When I click on it, will it take me directly to the voicemail, or will I still have to jump through the password junk? Does Voicemail integrate with the regular Phone app, or is it different?
Does Verizon give me my "Voicemail Pin" or whatever? Do they set it up at the store?
Browser. Is there any way I can set it so that it goes to my home page every time  I open it? I hate when it continues from last time.
THANKS IN ADVANCE! I know that I might sound stupid - but this is my first smartphone. I want it to be efficant, easy to use, and slick. Based on the reviews, the Incredible is all that.

    nytraveller53 wrote:
THANKS EVERYONE ALREADY! You've already helped me a lot. I think I'm going to take a trip to the Verizon Store today, and discuss some details with them as well.
A couple other questions I had, but I forgot to ask:
Task Killers. I know many Android fans swear by them, but most of the "Tech Experts" (PC World, Wired, etc.) claim that Android is designed to do it by itself. Is a Task Killer really necessary? I personally do not use task killers as they are glorifed battery killers.
How would I go about switching between open apps (WITHOUT using a third-party app), that is different from just going to the home screen again?
SO...Pressing down "1" to get to voicemail needs to be programmed in at Verizon, correct? Making it so that I don't have to enter the password needs to be done at Verizon, correct? And Verizon will give me my voicemail PIN and Password, correct? Call *86 to get to VM. Once there, you will set up your VM and assign a pin. Just follow the instructions.
The Droid Incredible was released almost a year ago now. Does it even make sense to sign up for a smartphone already that old, when I have to have it for 2 years? I'm thinking it might be better to wait for the new Thunderbolt. Your opinion? That is strictly a personal preference. If you are not near an area where LTE service will not be for a while, maybe the cheaper Incredible will be fine for you.
Hulu. Am I correct that Hulu does NOT work on Android, even with Flash? Hulu has blocked access from phones except MAYBE iPhone, but I am not sure
Can someone please give me a list of ALL the apps that CAME with the phone when you got it? (You know, calendar, mail, etc.) Too many to list. What you see is more than waht we got originally. More were added when Froyo came out.
Do I NEED Adobe Reader to see pdf email attachments, or will the "Office" thing display all documents just fine? What does that built in app support anyway? Download the reader
What "Verizon" apps comes with the phone? I don't want VCast and all that, just an app to monitor my minutes. I really hope Verizon doesn't load crapware (cough, HP, cough) onto the phone, do they? Vcast 'Comes' on the phone. You will see it and other apps you may never use on the 'Running' list, but do not dwell on it. If you want an explanation as to why they are 'Running', do a search. Simply they do not use resources unless you ARE using them.
On the phone, are there both "HTC Sense" versions of apps AND regular stock Android apps, or is it all combined? I don't want two contacts apps, for example. You will end up with dup apps if you DL another app. But you can hide the one you do not want to use, if it came with the phone.
Visual Voicemail. I'm considering it, it's just $2.99. And I'm NOT messing with Google Voice. Is VVM integrated with the regular dialer, or is it a seperate program? I've heard reports from both sides on this topic.
How can I make it so the Browser starts up at the home page every time (NO Task killer, please!) You mean have a favorite web page open when you open the browser???
How do you change the address in the web browser without navigating to "Menu" - "Go to" (that's a real pain). Is there a shortcut? Thanks! Bookmarks are your friend
I plan on using this phone for maybe an hour in the morning, not very much during the day, and then about two or three hours total in the afternoon. Will the battery last without me having to turn off different features? I actually WANT the 3G, sync, etc. running! battery life depends on many factors.... Do a search of 'Battery Life' to have help with that
I have super high speed Wifi in my home. When I set up wifi on the device initially, will the phone automatically connect to Wifi instead of 3G everytime I go home? Or do I do this manually? If you keep the WiFi switch on, yes. But keeping it on away from home KILLS the battery as the phone searches and searches
Thanks again - I know these are very nitpicky and detailed questions, but I'm so close to getting the Incredible...I want the full scoop!!
Thanks! I'll probably have more questions, thanks for helping me out! Forgive my stupid questions!

  • A few newbie questions about video.

I just bought a canon hf10 and am new to the video arena. I've got a macbook 2.16ghz with 4gigs. Imovie 09 and FCE 4.0.1.
I want all my films to display a cinema like feel. Movie quality look if you will. I'll be doing small movies of vacations and intro videos for my church. Stuff like that.
What's the best settings for the hf10 to record with? I've been using cine mode at 24p. really don't know what all that means.
What is the best route for importing, ie.. settings for FCE?
    Same Question for exporting.
And not to have to many questions in one topic this is the last. What's the best way to get a good fluid shot without all the shakiness that comes with a small hand held? I know imovie has a nice image stabilization feature that works well but it zooms way in on the video to stabilize it. Does FCE have this same function?

    It's worth remembering that:
iMovie is a consumer product, designed to enable untrained enthusiasts to turn out nice-looking video easily and quickly. You can do some cool things really easily, but it can be hard work when you want to go against its automated functions.
FCE is Final Cut Pro without most of the add-on applications, and without a small number of features. It's designed for pros on a budget, students and advanced amateurs. You have a far greater degree of control than in iMovie, but you have to know the product well to be able to exercise that control.
A good analogy is between a fully automatic camera/camcorder (iMovie) and a fully manual one (FCE). In the first case, you can get good shots without having to spend time learning how to use the equipment. In the second, you must learn how to use it to get anything worthwhile from it.
FCE doesn't include any of the big consumer-oriented features of iMovie: stabilisation, themes and so on. in FCE, you have to get what you want manually.
Th best way to get stable images in your shots is to use a good tripod; failing that, some other kind of support. Even a not-so-good tripod will be better than nothing.
One final point - if you have some unstable shots, you could get them into iMovie, stabilise them, then export the project as XML for full editing in FCE.

  • SG200-08 Newbie Questions

I have recently purchased the SG200-08 Smart Switch, but I have a few "newbie questions" about it as I get started using it.
The on board firmware shows 1.0.1.0. Is that the latest firmware to the switch?
Do I need to enable IPv6 Auto Configuration and DCHPv6 in my switch settings to be ready for IPv6 as my ISP rolls it out down the road?
How do I go about changing the switch's username? I was able to easily change the password, but having issues getting the username to change.
Do I need to do anything about the LLDP-MED settings? What exactly is that?
How do I confugure the System Time Settings so the switch functions in my time zone (USA Central Time)?
Thanks a bunch for any assistance!

    Hi Nathan,
My guess is that NAT is already on - you have one public IP address from your ISP. Your router will use NAT (network address translation) to allow multiple clients (and either dynamically assign them private IPs via dhcp or you set them statically) to connect to the internet using the one public IP. It also sounds like your RV042G is assigning both ipv6 and ipv4 addresses, and theres nothing wrong with that. Unless you have specific information re: ipv6 from your isp, however, I would suggest not worrying about it until you hear from them. Are your macs connected to the router via the SG200 switch? If so, it looks like its passing ipv6 just fine.  UPnP is something completely different - thats with opening ports like you mentioned - its a way that your devices can communicate with the router to automatically enable the proper port forwarding for the device/application.
Regarding the username, create a new user account. I don't think you can edit the cisco user, but try deleting it after creating and testing a new user account..
I'm not familiar with the Polycom system, but I would leave the settings as default unless you are using true IP phones (rather than an ATA adapter). From a quick google of the polycom device, I don't think you will gain anything from LLDP/CDP as the handsets use regular cordless phone freqs. With my setup, we use cisco IP desk phones and cordless wifi phones, CDP makes life easy as the cisco access point, wifi phones, cisco switch, and cisco desk phones (connected via ethernet) see each other and know what they're dealing with automatically.
I don't see the SNTP setting for unicast / broadcast that you're looking at. For the switch to get the time from a sntp server, under administration -> time -> sntp settings, add a server, and then back on time-> system time, enable sntp server as the main clock source. What are you using as your sntp source? Do you have an internal sntp server? You don't need to enable dhcp on the sntp server.
May I also point you to the two manuals, I think they may be helpful:  RV042G  & SG200
    Hope thats helpful.
    Best,
    David

  • RV042G Newbie Questions

I have the new Cisco RV042G router, and I have just a few "newbie questions" about it as I get started using it:
The firmware on board is v4.2.1.02. Since this is a brand new router, is that the latest firmware?
Under Time>DST Dates, what do I need to configure in there? I'm in the US, Central Time.
I want to use Back to My Mac from iCloud (formerly MobileMe). Under the iCloud preferances pane on my Mac, it's saying: "Back to My Mac may be slow because NAT Port Mapping (NAT-PMP) or Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) is turned off on your router. Turn on NAT-PMP or UPnP." What should I enable on my router in order for Back to My Mac to better function?
I'm using a VOIP phone on the network (only 1 device with a couple phones). Are there any QoS settings I should tweak for better performance of my VOIP phone? I did change the port the VOIP phone is connected to to High (instead of Normal) under Port Settings. Will this help boost performance?
I also want to setup a VLAN on a port for guests to access the Internet, but not have any access to my personal network. Here's the steps I've done so far. Is this sufficient or is there anything else I need to do?
I went to Setup>Network, enabled Multiple Subnets.
    I added 192.168.254.1/255.255.255.0 as a subnet.
I went to Port Management>Port Setup, set the port I wanted to use (Port 4) to VLAN2.
I went to Firewall>Access Rules, added two rules:
Deny All Traffic from 192.168.254.0 to 192.168.1.0.
Deny All Traffic from 192.168.1.0 to 192.168.1.0.
    Thanks everyone for your help!

Easy.  just goto the DHCP field and fill in the Static DHCP fields.
Assigning static IP addresses by adding devices from a list
Click Show unknown MAC addresses. The IP & MAC binding list appears. If the web browser displays a message about the pop-up window, allow the blocked content.
The devices are listed by the IP address and the MAC address. (Typically the MAC address appears on a label on the bottom panel or back panel of a device.) If needed, you can clickRefresh to update the data.To select a device, first enter a descriptive Name. Then check the Enable box. Alternatively, select all devices in the list by clicking the check box at the top of the Enable column.
Click OK to add the devices to the Static IP list, or click Close to close the pop-up window without adding the selected devices. After you click OK, a message appears. The message includes important information. Read it before clicking OK. Keep the browser open and wait until the selected MAC addresses appear in the Static IP list.
Modify or remove list entries, as needed:
To modify the settings: Click a device in the list. The information appears in the text fields. Make the changes, and then click Update. If you do not need to make changes, you can click Add New to de-select the entry and clear the text fields.
To delete an entry from the list: Click the entry that you want to delete, and then clickDelete. To select a block of entries, click the first entry, hold down the Shift key, and then click the final entry in the block. To select individual entries, press the Ctrl key while clicking each entry. To de-select an entry, press the Ctrl key while clicking the entry.
Assigning static IP addresses by entering devices manuallyIn the Static IP Address section, add or edit entries as needed. Remember that the settings are not saved until you click the Save button.
To add a new device to the list: Enter the following information, and then click Add to list.
Static IP Address: Enter the static IP address. You can enter 0.0.0.0 if you want the router to assign a static IP address to the device.
MAC Address: Enter the MAC address of the device. (Typically the MAC address appears on a label on the bottom panel or the back panel of a device.) Enter the address without punctuation.
Name: Enter a descriptive name for the device.
Enable: Check this box to assign the static IP address to this device.
To add another new entry: Enter the information, and then click Add to list.
To modify the settings: Click a device in the list. The information appears in the text fields. Make the changes, and then click Update. If you do not need to make changes, you can clickAdd New to de-select the entry and clear the text fields.
To delete an entry from the list: Click the entry that you want to delete, and then click Delete. To select a block of entries, click the first entry, hold down the Shift key, and then click the final entry in the block. To select individual entries, press the Ctrl key while clicking each entry. To de-select an entry, press the Ctrl key while clicking the entry.
Using the Static IP List to Block Devices
You can use the Static IP list to control access to your network. You can block access by devices that are not on the list or do not have the correct IP address.
Add devices to the Static IP list as described in Static IP Addresses.
Enable or disable the following features:
Block MAC address on the list with wrong IP address: Check this box to prevent a computer from accessing your network if its IP address has been changed. For example, if you previously assigned a static IP address of 192.168.1.100 and someone configures the device to use 192.168.149, the device will not be allowed to connect to your network. This feature discourages users from changing their device IP addresses without your permission. Uncheck the box to allow access regardless of the current IP address assignment.
Block MAC address not on the list: Check this box to block access from devices that are not included in the Static IP list. This feature prevents unknown devices from accessing your network. Uncheck the box to allow access by any connected device that is configured with an IP address in the correct range.
    Hope that helps.
    Regards Simon

  • Few simple questions from newbie

I'm new to Java, but i've worked a lot with action script... it didn't help a lot :) Here are my few beginner questions:
What does: public, static, abstract, void... and other things mean in front of the class name?
How can i call variables from another classes: if i have one class that does one thing and stores the result in a variable, how can i use that variable from a different class?
How can i call the input window to enter the value for variable? I've tried with importing "io.inputstream" library, and used the "extend" thing, but i still cant call the input window?

I came to Java from ActionScript too, and I must say having ActionScript as your first programming language does NOT make it easy to learn other languages. I was incredibly lost when starting with Java.
What does: public, static, abstract, void... and
other things mean in front of the class name? You'll find all that in the Java Tutorial
How can i call variables from another classes: if i
have one class that does one thing and stores the
result in a variable, how can i use that variable
from a different class? To use the variable from another class, you need to make a call to the class. Let's say you're in ClassB; you would make a call to a ClassA variable by doing something such as:
    ClassA.myVar.myMethod();
How can i call the input window to enter the value
for variable? I've tried with importing
"io.inputstream" library, and used the "extend"
thing, but i still cant call the input window?I recommend reading the tutorial before you try anything like that.

  • Domain name settings - Newbie question

    Sorry for a newbie question!
I am already pointing a domain name to web hosting for email account. Now, I need an application server to run ERP software and Oracle, and installing Solaris and Oracle need a domain name.
If I point my domain name to the server, how do I receive emails from web hosting???
Install an email server to the application server instead? What can I do if I want the same domain name? Any option?

Setting up a mailserver and making sure it doesn't suddenly turn into a spambox is not something you do with the use of a few commands. I suggest to dive into the Solaris admin guide on docs.sun.com and read up on e-mail and network services.
If that is asking too much of your time you'll be better off getting your ISP to handle all this for you.

    Greetings..this is a newbie question
We have 48 versions of JRE running in on XP IE6 in our company.

  • InDesign or Acrobat (newbie question)

    Hi,
I tried posting this in the LiveCycle Designer forum, but I think it's a bit too much of a newbie question:
Once in a blue moon when I'm at work, someone will ask me if I can add text fields to a PDF form so that they can easily type onto it and print it out. I've always done that directly in Acrobat (on the few occasions that it's been requested from me). But I was curious about Adobe LiveCycle since it came with CS3, so I played around with it a couple of days ago. I added the text fields in LiveCycle this time, and it seems to have worked fine. Which is the better program for this kind of task? I'm not 100% clear on the *main* purposes of either program or how they compare. If anyone wanted to give me a clue about it, I'd appreciate it!
    Thanks,
    Phyllis

    > I thought perhaps you could add that capability
You can (I said I was oversimplifying). However there are contractual
limits - to oversimplify (!) 500 users per form.
    >Which would be preferable -- receiving form data from LiveCycle or Acrobat?
It depends what you want to do.
    >
    >I wish I knew what the difference was between these two programs. Is it purely a matter of emphasis on one task or another?
They come to the same problem in different ways. For a simple task
they may seem pretty much the same. Some differences:
    * A form made in Acrobat is a PDF with form fields stuck on top; it
remains a normal PDF in every other way. Forms are almost always made
by preparing an existing PDF, then adding form fields.
    * A form made in Designer is barely a PDF. It's a wrapper round an XML
file. You can no longer edit it in Acrobat, ever, even for the most
simple things. PDF files are imported and converted (sometimes with
loss of quality or features), or forms are made from scratch.
    * Acrobat form fields are fixed size.
    * Designer form layout can be dynamic.

  • Airline Travel- newbie question

New to the iPod scene. Just wondering if there is any harm in allowing an iPod to go through airport security check (ie. x-ray) in my carry-on, or should it be removed and hand inspected?
    Like I said, newbie question.

I know that the x ray machine won't damage my ipod Classic but am wondering about the tests that security staff sometimes do on electronic items. A few years ago, going through Stansted, security did what we think was a random check on a G3 ibook. The test involved the man wiping a cloth over the ibook which was testing for explosives. We then had to turn the ibook on and let it power up and then shut it down. I did ask if there was any chance that we could lose anything on it and was told no. I'm thinking that the hardware in ipods might be more sensitive and so am asking if there's ANY chance that the same or similar test/s that were done on our ibook could do anything to my ipod classic. We're going to Portugal in a few weeks going through Dublin on way out and returning from Faro.

  • Few problems/questions! (cover flow, album art...etc)

Ok I finally added my songs to my new IPOD (replaced my old one) and this is my first Ipod with video, color...etc. Its the IPOD Classic 80 GIG.
    Well I am having a few problems/questions:
---Why when I hit "Get album art" does it ONLY get art for my videos? It doesn't get any for all 1,500+ songs! Is it because they aren't downloaded from Itunes? If so then why does it do it for the movies then? They aren't from ITunes either!
---With Cover Flow I updated the Album Art myself and have about 700 songs with art now. But I have two problems.
    1. It won't display all 700 songs under Cover Flow!
    2. It won't show them in order by song name! Can I change that?!? If not then how is it showing them by? What do I need to change?
---Are there any other video types supported besides that on Mpeg4 and that other weird type? If not why not? Its a pain to have to convert everything. Its almost not worth having this video IPOD if you have to go through sop much effort just to watch 1 stupid video. I mean I spent more money on extra programs now for music and videos then I did on the IPOD almost.
---Is there any way to transfer your music from one IPOD to another? I know some people say you can't but why? What about people like me who have music ripped from our own cds and NOTHING from ITunes? Its a REAL pain having to rerip all the cds, put them back on, rename all the songs, fix all the info...etc. Its taken me 4 days now. Apple needs to think about a "IPOD TO IPOD" music transfer kinda program.
---How do you get pics on the IPOD without having to keep them on your PC? I notice it has to SYNC them every time I have it plugged into the PC! But if I tell it NOT to sync pics anymore then they won't stay on the IPOD if turn that option off and unplug the IPOD. Theres got to be another way to add them.

Cover flow on the ipod can only be done (as far as I know) on Album by Artist Name. On iTunes you can change it around

  • Total Newbie Question ... Sorry :-(

I know it's a windows thing, and I am now converted to Mac but I gotta know this because it's doing my head in. It's a complete stupid green gilled newbie question.
When installing new programs on a Mac can you create shortcuts to the programs on the Dock? I did what I THOUGHT it would be, i.e I made an Alias and stuck it in the dock, but on rebooting my Mac later on, in place of the shortcuts where 3 question marks which when clicked on did absolutely nothing???

You aren't installing something from a dmg file are you? The dmg is a disk image – kind of a virtual CD. So when you double click the dmg and then get the little disk/hardrive/custom icon on your desktop that is the same as if you had mounted a CD. You then need to drag the application off of that "CD" into your application folder. Then it is truly installed.
You can then "eject" the icon your your desktop. This is what happens when you shutdown and without remounting the image your dock shortcut can't find the original.
    Just a thought.

  • Newbie Question. just installed IE7.. how do I set up a local host to preview sites?

Sorry for the newbie question... but it's been a long time since I have done this
    Thanks!

Just define your site in DW as always.  For a static site, that's all you need to do.

  • Newbie Question about FM 8 and Acrobat Pro 9

    Hello:
I have some dcouments that I've written in FM v8.0p277. I print them to PDF so that I can have a copy to include on a CD and I also print some hard copies.
My newbie question is whether there is a way to create a  PDF for hard copy where I mainitain the colors in photos and figures but that the text that is hyperlinked doesn't appear as blue. I want to keep the links live within the soft copy. Is there something I can change within Frame or with Acrobat?
    TIA,
    Kimberly

    Kimberly,
How comes the text is blue in the first place? I guess the cross-reference formats use some character format which makes them blue? There are many options:
Temporarily change the color definition for the color used in the cross-reference format to black.
Temporarily change the character format to not use that color.
Temporarily change the cross-reference definition to not used that character format.
Whichever method you choose, I would create a separate document with the changed format setting and import those format into your book, create the PDF and then import the same format from the official template.
