Hey, my Macbook Pro just arrived today, and I was wondering about general battery care:
Is it okay to leave it plugged in while using it?
How come there's a longer power cord and a shorter one? Is it just for convenience?
How long does a Macbook usually take to charge to 100%?
Is it okay to leave it plugged in all night?

Yes, you can leave it plugged in. Once in a while however, you have to use it under it's own power, at least till it reaches 80% to keep your battery in optimal condition.
As for the power cord, you answered that one yourself " for convenience "
How long does it take long to charge all depends on how low the battery was when you charged it.
Yes, it's ok to leave your Macbook plugged in all night. Just make sure you use it under it's own power once in a while. You don't have to fully discharge it which might do more harm than good.

It depends what you mean by downloading. If you mean you download a lot of software/music/movies etc illegally using PTP, MIRC, Torrents etc, then I would say no: it is generally more straight forward on Windows, so I've heard.

possibly a bit of both but I reckon it's mainly because people don't bother making viruses for macs (yet....)

A few questions about MacBooks and Parallels Desktop.

I have a few questions about MacBooks and Parallels Desktop.
1) I understand I need at least 1GB of RAM to run Parallels Desktop but what about the hard drive, is the stock 60GB drive big enough?
2) Related to question 1, even if it was big enough to allow me to install and run Windows would the 60GB drive be enough if I wanted to install a Linux distribution as well?
3) This has nothing to do with Parallels Desktop but thought I'd ask it here anyway, do Apple Stores carry just the stock MacBooks, or do they carry other configurations?

1. Depend on how intensive you use that HD for saving data on both Mac OS and XP. For standard installation on both OS X and XP, the space of 60 Gb is enough.
2. Same answer as no 1. You can install all three on that HD space, but the extra spacce available will be less and less for your data. You can save your data on external or back up on cd/dvd and erase it from the HD to keep the free space.
Remember to leave at least 2 or 3 Gb for virtual memory usage.
3. Just call them, maybe they don't have it in store stock, but by appointment they might configure one for you before your pick-up date.

Few questions about mac pro before buying

Hello all!
I may be buying a mac pro in a month or so and have a few questions about it.
1. ) Any one know when Apple may release the latest mac pro? Don't wanna buy some thing that'll be significantly obsolete in a few days
2. ) Is it possible to use SATA optical drives internally? I have a SATA blu ray drive I'd like to take from my PC, if that's possible.
3. ) Is it possible to get a graphics cards better than the 8800 GT for video games? (For use in OS X)
4. ) Finally, is there a significant performance difference between Apple's seemingly super expensive RAM and 3rd party RAM? (Other than the heat syncs)

1. We have no idea when Apple will release any product until it's released. This is a user-to-user site so we have no more information about future products than you do.
2. Yes, it's possible. There are two additional SATA ports on the motherboard.
3. The only graphic cards are those provided by Apple when you order the computer as well as the non-Apple supplied ATI HD-3870 Mac/PC card. The 8800 and 3870 have close performance specs. You can find some benchmarks at Bare Feats.
4. There's no difference between the RAM Apple installs and what you can purchase on the open market. As long as the RAM meets the required specifications and has the requisite heat sink it will work just fine.

Basic questions about macbook pro + external monitor

Hi,
I have some very basic questions about using a Macbook Pro + external display. I don't actually have them but need to know how things works.
So, here they are:
1) Can I use the external display as the main display?
2) Will the external display run with its resolution or with that of the mbook pro?
3) Somewhere I read that you cannot keep the macbook pro open and get the full resolution of the external display. Is that true ?
4) Is it dangerous to keep the mbook closed while using the external display?
5) Does the usage of the external display impact on mbook performance?
I know...a lot of questions , but would be nice if someone could help me.

Hi - I am presently using an external display.
To answer your questions in sequence:
1. Yes you can use the external display as your main display. The way to enable that mode is to put your MacBook Pro to sleep, attach the external display. Wake up your MBPro with the lid closed and you will see the external display as you main display. You can alternatively set the external to "Mirror" your notebook by using preferences/display.
2. The external display will run at its resolution although you can adjust and calibrate it using Preferences/Display.
3. Not true. You get max resolution on both displays. Of course you may have to tweak as mentioned above.
4. Not at all. I use this mode all the time. Just make sure you initially set up as mentioned above and your LCD on the MBPro will stay off.
5. I have not seen any performance degradation whatsoever.

Quick questions about Macbook Pro specs...

I am looking at the different Macbooks that Apple offers in order to decide which one to purchase. The two main differences that i noticed are as follows. Can someone please help me answer these two questions?
1. What is the difference between a Hard Drive on the Macbook Pro and Flash Storage on the Macbook Pro with Retina?
2. Does the Macbook Pro with Retina not have a build in CD drive? Is that why it states that I would have to purchase a Superdrive seperately?

1. Flash storage is a solid state drive, which is a lot faster than a hard drive. Meaning, boot times are faster and opening applications are faster with teh flash storage. Transferring data is also faster, so installations go faster.
2. The retina's don't have an optical drive (DVD/CD drive), so if you needed one you would have to buy an external drive. However, you don't have to purchase Apple's expensive superdrive, you could purchase a 3rd party drive for much cheaper.

Questions about macbook pro's fan speed

i'm using a macbook pro early 2008
and i use istatpro to monitor cpu gpu temp
1. do the fans work with a min rpm around 2000 all the time?
2. when i open quite a few apps, mbp get hot, and the gpu temp rises up to 80c degree also cpu temp rises to 60or70c degree. but the fan rpm is still around 2800.
some guys using macbook/pro confirm that with temp around 80c, their fan has a rpm around 3000or4000.
does someone else here have this situation above.
is it normal?

1) Yes, the default fan speed is 2000 rpm. At that speed they are nearly silent. The speed will increase with temperature. Max revs possible are 6000 rpm.
2) Notebook computers get hot, regardless of make. The temps you see are reasonable for graphic-intensive applications. The MBP will automatically shut down if the temps get too high; I believe the cutoff point is just over 100°C.
There are third-party programs that allow you to customize fan settings but they must be used with care. It's possible to overwork the fans by manually setting their speeds too high.
The best approach is to insure that the MBP gets to use all its built-in cooling capacity. Using the computer on a pillow or blanket is bad; the case bottom dissipates heat but only if air can get under it. Use a lapboard if you must use the computer in your lap.
Exhaust air emits from the hinge area in the back of the case. make sure nothing blocks the case there or you'll get overheating.

Questions about MacBook Pro 13"

Im thinking of buying a Macbook Pro for school. Im doing some kind of Graphic Design education and I use a lot of photoshop and adobe programs.
Now I have two questions regarding to this.
What are the advantages of using a Macbook Pro for creative software like Photoshop and programming (like coding a website with html/css/js), over a windows 8 laptop?
I just dont have the money for a 15 inch macbook pro, but will the MacBook pro 13 inch i5 4GB will be fast enough for adobe CS6 and will the screen also be, do-able? Its rather small of coure. But at home I got a LG 27" monitor, which I can connect my laptop to. So 13 inch will only be for at school. Mostly I design behind my 27 inch monitor.

No real difference. Both can run Photoshop just as well. It really depends on the amount of RAM installed, the speed of the hard drive and CPU along with the graphics processor.
Then why do so many people use MacBooks? Especialy in the creative industries?
With the Mac you will need a Thunderbolt/Mini Displayport to whatever type of connection your 27" screen has. DVI or HDMI. These adapters cost arount $30 each.
You will also need to factor in the Applecare extended warranty which extends the standard one year hardware warranty to 3 years of coverage, adding 2 years. Without it if that Mac fails after the first year it is very expensive to fix a Mac computer.
How can I be sure a macbook 13 inch can be connected correct and well to my LG 27 inch monitor. My LG is 16:9 by the way. I read some non-apple monitors have compatibility problems

4 GB of memory will not be enough for CS6 regardless of the processor. My advice would be to go with the MB Pro and upgrade to 16 GB memory. Memory acts as a bottleneck for processing speed. The more memory you have, the more power you will be able to get out of your processor. From personal experience, I can tell you running a late 2011 MB pro (i7 2.2 GHz quad core processor), CS5 was crashing with even 8 GB memory. Since upgrading to 16 GB, it has run amazingly well.
I have a friend with 4GB, a dual core CPU and the HD3000 GPU, he runs Adobe CS6 just well. How is this possible there are so many differnt opinions on this matter?

Newbie questions about Macbook Pros at work...

Hello all! Our new CTO has decided he wanted a MacBook Pro in our predominant Windows desktop environment. While we do have several Macs in use, primarily in our development departments, I believe this is a sign of the times and I expect more Macs to come through the doors as time passes. It is for this reason as an IT admin that I'm trying to begin standardizing what I can on the Macs. Our Windows desktop is tightly locked down where users do not have admin rights on their systems and all systems are centrally managed through our desktop management solution. About 15 years ago, I supported Macs in the workplace, but boy have times changed! I'm struggling to figure out how Macs should work in our environment. Is it possible to have corporate-owned Macs that are locked down and centrally managed? Should I be considering the Apple Deployment and Device Enrollment Programs as a starting point? My primary goal is to not have users using their personal Apple IDs on the devices. Is this possible and is this the right way to go for business applications? Thank you for any information you can give to me. This will be an ongoing learning curve for me. If there are some good training sites out there, I'd appreciate your opinions there too!

I have a question about Macbook Pro system preferences...

When I first got my Macbook Pro, I thought it was cool to have my computer "talk" to me when I had notifications. For example, when I have an update available, it will say, "Stephen, updates are available." Or when my battery is low, it will say, "Stephen, you are now running on reserve battery power." Into my final year of Civil Engineering. I will be using softwares like AUTOCAD, PRIMAVERA, etc.. Ive decided to go for a 15" model. I'm confused to go for with or without retina display. With retina offers low storage and 512GB SSD is out of my budget. which one will be the best for me? MacBook Pro normal or MacBook Pro with retina display 256GB flash storage.

To be fair, the MacBook Pro with Retina display is for people who needs extreme portability, and I don't recommend it to anyone. All its parts are soldered, and you can't modify anything without voiding the warranty, and repairs are more expensive than with any other portable Mac. Also, battery replacements are more expensive, and it's a Mac with less lifetime because of this.
Go for the non-Retina MacBook Pro, which contains similar hardware but without HDMI port (you have to use a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter), without SSD (but a 750 GB HDD) and it's customizable (you can add RAM and modify the hard drive without voiding the warranty). Also, repairs are cheaper, and you will only note the difference with a MacBook Pro with Retina display in read and write tasks

Hello! I have recently bought a Mac Book Pro is Retina display ( 13 in) and I am looking to protect it as much as possible. I bought a case. I saw the keyboard covers and though they were a good idea. I was almost about to purchase one until i read a comment with someone stating that the keyboard covers were not good for the laptops. That they make them overheat or something to that effect. Is this true? I am simply looking for some knowledgeable advice since i don't know too much and the technical side. Thank you for your time!

Cases placed around Mac laptops run a risk of causing the computer to overheat. There are smal openings for the fans to pull air in and push it out, providing cooling. The Aluminum case is a heat sink providing a major way to remove heat. Any covering of he Aluminum body inhibits he heat removal process. The more enclosure you add, case and keyboard cover, the more difficult it becomes to get rid of he heat he computer produces.
Be cautious about adding too much in the way of enclosure.

A few questions about Connect Pro

Hi. We're interested in implementing a solution for webinars where we do web instructional sessions (continuing education for adults). We have an instructor who wants to do a webinar with the following requirements:
She wants to have a classroom of on-site participants but also be able to broadcast it for users across the web. How can this be done with Connect Pro? A webcam is stationary, so we'll need to have a camera that follows her around while she talks and stream that via Connect Pro somehow.
She needs to share videos with the students. How good is the quality of video shared via Connect Pro?
Do all participants need to have computer headsets to be able to talk to her? Or does the built-in microphones/speakers in computers create an echo problem?
If she has two other people who will talk during the presentation, do each of them need to have a named license?

I will happily share some experiences teaching Connect Live and through remote sessions:
Teaching a mix can be a tricky balance. best to have someone managing the Q&A chats and fileding quesitons. There are some highend video conference cameras that automaticall track; it may be more cost effective having a live person track her movements through the room.
The video shared may not be HD quality. The better the quality captured, the better they will see. Overall, the video I've experienced is on par with standard web videos. Better quality will require more bandwidth.
Headsets are recommended. If they use the built-in mikes, then at the very LEAST they should use headphones to minimize the echo issue. If those speaking are in the room, they should definitely use headsets.
No, they don't need a special license to speak. Microphone rights can be given to individual participants. Presenters automatically have those rights.

Question about Macbook Pro 15' gaming slowdown

I purchased this mid 2010 MBP 15 last year but didnt game much on it. Just recently I installed Battlefield bad company2 via bootcamp and also overclocked the GPU a bit. The MBP has handled it quite well with 60ish fps in low settings.The problem is now all of a sudden the fps drops to 35 on average and its basically not playable. I've resetted the clock rate back to factory setting and tried fan control to 6000RPM but still no help. Is this driver related issue/overclocking problem/overheating/ or do I need to reinstall my win 7 os? or its just that GT330m can't do the job? Thanks in advance!

I think your graphics card can't handle what your trying to throw at it.
