A few Questions and opinions

Ok, I'm looking at getting a mac mini, as a replacement fora jaded old Tiny PC. Im basically wondering whether the mac mini is substantial for my needsa nd whether anyone ahs any problems or opinons on them. Basically i need a small home computer which will be used simply for the internet, microsoft office, and perhaps something like football manager 2007. Will the mac mini be able cope with this?
thanks

This question comes up quite regularly, and in response I think the most important thing to say is that one has to be careful not to mistake the size of the Mac mini as any indication of it's performance. Inside that small package is a fully-fledged desktop computer which in most respects comes close to equalling the performance and power of the top of the range Mac from just 2 or 3 years ago.
It suffers two limitations in my view. The first is not so much the system itself as it is the current state of software, because like every other Intel-based Mac, the fact is that at present, a number of the most common applications are still not written to run natively on Intel processors. As a result they run, but require the use of an on-the-fly translator to convert them from PPC to Intel code. Rosetta, the translator, is provided as part of the OS but requires a lot of memory and as would be expected, doesn't generally run particularly quickly. To use software such as the current version of MS Office, Adobe Photoshop etc, it would be wise to add as much RAM to the system as possible (the max is 2Gb) to allow 'room' for Rosetta to work. Intel versions of these packages, including MS Office, are due next year.
The second is a relatively slow hard drive. The drive is, in fact, the same as those used in the laptop models, and runs at 5400rpm. It doesn't really impact greatly on system performance except at times when there is significant drive activity. The system can be improved once again by increasing RAM since this helps reduce the background 'paging' activity (reading and writing to virtual memory) but when dealing with large data files, system performance will always be limited to some degree by the performance of the drive.
Fortunately the first issue can be resolved by sticking entirely to Intel-native applications, which means that if you need an MS Office compatible package, you can actually avoid the current (non native) Office by downloading Neo Office, which is Open Source and Intel Native. It's not as elegant as the Intel native Microsoft product promises to be when it is released, but it works and at the very least should tide you over until MS release their software.
Otherwise, a Mac mini is capable of a lot more than basic tasks. I have a number of them in use in networks I manage and their users are very happy with them, including one user who uses his for complex video editing and production.
These are remarkable little systems that seem to rarely disappoint.

We were kind of disappointed to find that you could no

  • Got my apple TV TODAY! few questions and my thoughts

After watching the keynote and seeing the new itunes rental system i decided to go out and buy the appletv... I wanted to jump the gun and get it before the update comes out... Anyways, few questions
    1) I don't think this is possible but is there anyway to stream a DVD playing in my computer to apple TV? I understand Apple TV uses quicktime, and quicktime can't play DVD's so I am thinking it is not possible.. Am i correct? I really hope I am wrong on this one though ahaha.. I know i can rip then convert but that takes way too much time...
    2) I have read conflicting answers to my next question, the apple support article states that you can already stream rentals from itunes to the appletv but that is not possible yet.. Am i correct? just want to make sure my appletv isn't messed up... According to the apple website the unit needs the upgrade so I assume I am right here too...
    3) last, anything else i need to know or that you might think i would find useful when it comes to appletv??
I love apple and have been a long time apple user... Appletv didn't float my boat at first and was a pretty lame and expensive device i though... HOWEVER, take 2 seems to be a very nice step in the right direction.. FIRST, no monthly subscription fees like netflix and tivo while still being able to rent and pay as you go without using a computer (This netflix feature is coming late 2008 when their box releases).. I think i am going to love the new integration with web gallery!
There are still some features i would like to see in apple TV and i will be submitting feedback about them ocne the update releases, but this step and price drop warrants a purchase imo..

I had the same idea... I felt that 40 GB would be plenty especially b/c i plan to use it mostly for rentals... But it also gives me "Insurance" incase the appletv becomes huge after the update and apple decides to release a new generation in the next year or so or if i decide i actually do need more memory.. I won't feel as bad buying it knowing i only spent $229 on this one.. but i would be pretty upset with myself if i purchased the big model and never used the memory or if apple released a new generation in the next year....
BTW, if you purchase it at a reseller, make sure you take an apple add with you.. they may not have rolled the price back.. Circuit City was like that, i had to show the apple home page to get it for 229

  • A few questions. Opinions from the community would be appreciated.

I briefly touched over this in the introduction thread. Assuming you did not read that though.
I am more or less entirely new to Linux, I put Ubuntu on my system no more than a week ago being recommended it as a beginners Linux. I have little to no experience with Linux at all.
    That being said..
I am extremely interested in learning Linux inside and out. Computers, hardware and software both are a huge passion of mine.
After some reading I've found very mixed opinions from others about Arch, many describe it as a Linux for experienced "geek" users. While I've been told by others that if I want to use Arch I should just jump into it because they used "insert distro here" for "insert number of years here" and when making the move they realized all of the years spent on other simpler distros didn't really teach them anything anyway. So I would like the communities opinion on the matter, if Arch users agree with the former or latter.
Now the second, possibly more important question. I don't have Internet on the computer I will be installing Arch on at the moment. I haven't really been able to find a whole lot over the matter and I wasn't sure if that would be an issue when I get Internet back and I'm possibly stuck with just a terminal. I don't want to screw myself over or anything so I wanted to ask here first.
I hope my questions weren't too annoying, and appreciate any help I get.

Yes, but with arch that may be made more explicit as "you have to go get what you want, it will not be brought to you."
Indeed. No fancy software centers or GUI package managers here. You want something? Find the package, install it and configure it. Fortunately, the wiki works great both for installation of the OS and in almost every post-install matters. But anyway x0r.h4, you'll need an internet connection on a rolling release distro.
x0r.h4 wrote:Fully understandable. I've noticed most people who move to a new distro have been using other distros for years already.
Ive ran across far less people who are new to Linux entirely.
I've used Ubuntu long enough now to know that although I dont hate it by any means like so many others have expressed that they do, I don't necessarily "love" it per say. It's a great OS in my opinion, but like you already stated its very much like Windows. I still felt most of the same restrictions you get from Windows along with a generally Windowy feel to it. I didnt really feel like a Linux user using Ubuntu and Unity.
That's mainly why I stopped using *buntu and Mint. I wanted an OS which gave me total freedom to add, remove and create; and even though *buntu and Mint are not bad OS they are pretty restrictive. I tried openSUSE and had the same problem, but although I was running Debian for a couple months and I learnt a lot it still wasn't what I wanted. In that way, Arch is just what the doctor ordered for me. I allows me to build my "own OS" from scratch and set it up my way.
x0r.h4 wrote:I know I want a more "free" distro, I love the "you get what you want and nothing more" attitude. I just wasnt sure if it was a bad place to start seeing as Arch has a bit of a reputation for being a more difficult distro.
That's the spirit All you need is the will to learn. You will have a better knowledge of how Linux works "behind the scenes", it'll give you more flexibility as an user and a bit of a sense of what is to really administrate an OS. The distro it's pretty easy to use, but the first hours for an unexperienced user (by first hours I mean installing the system, configuring it and run the basic post-install routines) can be pretty rough. Still, if you follow the wiki you should have no problem.
Again, my advice is to not install Arch on a computer without internet connection, but if you can solve that then if I were you I would go right for it.

  • A few questions and comments about the 2010 MBP i7

Hi! I'm pretty new to owning a Mac computer and I actually always wanted one. I bought the top of the line Macbook Pro 15" i7 8GB, 500GB SSD notebook. I have a couple of questions on its usage.
    1) Overheating is a big issue. Many people noticed overheating with the i7 MBP. Temperatures range from 38C to 60C when using iTunes/Safari/Word. Temperatures shoot to the 70C-85C when playing games. Once you hit the 70C mark, the notebook part above the keyboard is pretty hot. However, I wouldn't care if it doesn't damage my computer so my question is, will 85C temperatures damage a Macbook Pro?
    2) Screen Scratching: Do MBP screens scratch easily? I have quite a few fingerprints a day on the screen but is it like the iPod Touch anti-scratch screen?
    3) Freezing: I've been having the MBP for 2 weeks now and my MBP has frozen twice. It wasn't because of the heat but Finder wasn't responding and I could not force quit. However, it worked after 30 seconds. Does this happen often and will it be a long-term issue?
Even after the overheating issue, Macs are still better than PCs. It's so much easier and neat than a PC.
    5) Do you guys have any tips to using a Mac? Any accessories?
    6) I installed SMC Fan Control. If I set it to 6000 rpm, will there be any significant damage to the fans? Are the fans durable?
Thank you all for the help!

Just came across this thread while looking for info on the newest MBPs, and their (lack of) ability to cool themselves. Wanted to throw my 2c in.
I have to strongly disagree with the recommendation to not install fan control software. I have an early 2008 MBP, and I frequently play video games and encode video. When left to defend itself, I have witnessed the CPU temp reach 202 F. Sorry, but that's totally unacceptable, and I manually adjust the fans to mitigate the heat.
After 2 years of this, I am convinced the excess heat has harmed my system. It's very disappointing to hear that the new models still have problems with heat.

  • Mac security question and opinions

    Hi,
My Mac is plugged directly into my cable modem. I am wondering about security.
Firstly, I have two accounts for me and my wife; my account can "administer the computer" and my wife's cannot. Both accounts currently have blank passwords, I know that may sound like a red flag right there, but it's just easier to switch back and forth that way.
I discovered there's a firewall on the System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall tab. I clicked "start firewall", but I'm wondering what that's going to do for me. Apple's docs say that make me invisible to the world.
So the quick question, with "firewall started" am I pretty much protected against threats coming from the internet? I prefer to leave the accounts with blank passwords, am I being stupid? I just don't feel like it's a problem, especially if the firewall works as advertised.
Any info or opinions are greatly appreciated!

I strongly recommend that you use a password for each login account but primarily for your admin account which will also be required when installing any software that uses an installer and/or for something being installed to the root directory of the hard drive such as a virus would likely require. If you are ever prompted for your admin password out of the blue to install anything without purposely trying to install anything, you should always decline which not having an admin password negates.
Many single users of a Mac have an admin account (obviously and required) but create a login account without admin privileges for every day use as added security.
Besides turning on the built-in Firewall, do not enable any services/ports that you don't need or regularly use and select all options via the Advanced button under the Firewall tab.

  • Hello I have a few questions and I need some help with my iTunes and  iPod

    Hello iTunes people.
I have a little problem with my iTunes. I actually almost know nothing about iTunes really. But I have had a 80 gig ipod .. ummm I think it's a iPod classic maybe. A long time ago I just downloaded iTunes. I think one of my tech friends already had put the program onto my PC so I did not even have to download it. Anyways I put my life's collection of mp3's onto iTunes and then syncs it with my iPod and it worked great. Here is my problem. I just recently bought a MONSTER PC. I have lovingly named it " ED209 " I downloaded iTunes for it and I have the most up to date version.8.1.1 is the most current version correct? Ok well here is my problem. What I want to do is I want to put everything that is currently on my iPod ONTO the iTunes library. I DO NOT want to import anything from the library or playlist or whatever you call it ONTO the iPod because there is nothing in the library. Now this is were its gets weird and possibly silly. A person I was chatting with on Facebook sort of made fun of me because she was like " Dude! Just push " Sync " But the reason I am paranoid is because THIS is the message I get....
" The iPod " Aaron's iPod " is synced with another iTunes library. Do you want to erase this ipod and sync with this iTunes library? "
HOLY COW!! That girl on Facebook was making fun of me but READ THAT. That exactly says ERASE the "iPod" and Sync with THIS library " It does not say put what is ON the iPod into THIS Library. It says it the other way around. Clear as day it says it will ERASE the " Ipod " it does not say " Fill the library with whats on your iPod "
Do I all of a sudden not understand English or something???? I know how to freaking read and from what it says is sounds a 100 percent like " we will ERASE youe iPod and put everything from this playist or library onto your iPiod" But there is NOTHING in my library? Am I mentally challenged or what?
I hope someone can help me here and I have another request. Could someone just tell me all the cool things I can do with iTunes and my iPod? I am trying to read the help files and the FAQ and whatever else Apple provides you with but it has SO MUCH crap that looks usless. I find myself reading a whole paragraph about some simple little section of s section of a section of a feature! Know what I mean. Someone give me the long and short of the neat things I can do with this stuff. I have windows Vista with a wicked computer that has like 6 gigs of ram and m iPod is a 80 GB Classic
    help !!

*What I want to do is I want to put everything that is currently on my iPod ONTO the iTunes library.*
1). Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only let you copy your purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • I have a few questions and I want an apple tv

Ok I am thinking of getting the 160 GB apple TV model. My brother and I are going to ditch our cable DVR it's too expensive and we're thinking of getting the appleTV to replace it. So here's one of my questions if I hook it up to the tv in our living room we have a wifi router hooked to our computers. do we just need to log into our seperate itunes accts to access our content or do we need to create a joint acct just for the TV? Secondly if we have basic cable running thru the AppleTV can we record our shows onto the apple tv hardrive or is it just specific to itunes stuff? All replies welcome I have a 1st generation iphone which is great it well got me hooked on apple stuff I don't know why I waited so long.

Thank you for your confirmation of my earlier post....
To be quite honest about it, I rarely read more than the first couple of sentences of your rather long-winded comments.
...can you suggest a PC compatible hardware device that does what the the eyetv does for us mac users for the person asking the question.
There is a veritable cornucopia of video capture devices available for PCs. I'm sure he'll find enough to make his head swim if he does a keyword search at Amazon.
(sorry couldn't resist - I understand you are quite appreciative of humour)
That's true, almost as much as you are adept at paraphrasing the answers of others and garnering points from them.

  • A few questions and advice

Recently I swapped out my ADSL router modem for another, this caused all sorts of hassle so I put the old one back in. Since then I am having significant issues. Mostly with wireless.
As I had not changed the airport extreme (n) I do not know why the wireless became an issue. Basically my laptop connects to the network fine with full strength but web access and local network access is variable, between normal and dead slow. I am at a loss to explain it.
Another thing is that my ADLS modem is a draytek. And I currently have it set to DHCP and the airport to passthrough as this was what I was advised. Yet to my mind the airport extreme should take on the task of dishing out addresses as its got most things connected to it! Or put another way the draytek has one ethernet lead to the wan on the airport then from the airport my computers and a switch are connected.
Would it make more sense to allow the airport to dish out IPs, does it make any difference?
Any suggestions on what could have gone wrong on the wireless side would be most appreciated. For instance I was using Teleport just fine with it prior to the issue now Teleport has terrible troubles with frequent drop outs or losing control once its on the other mac leaving me with no mouse anywhere!
One other thing are there any tools I can use to diagnose issues on the network beyond looking forlornly at the wireless bar showing full strength.

um, no that does not seem to have fixed it after waking the macbook from sleep the speeds are rubbish again.
If anyone is reading would an archieve install on the macbook be worth considering. Wireless from the imac seems fine. I think someting has gone pear shaped on the macbook,

  • A few questions about common "issues" before buying New iPad

I am hoping to pick up the new iPad in the next few weeks, however I have read up on some issues which I'd like some information on.
I have been using my GF's iPad 2 a lot and I really love it, however I am dead set on buying the new one, I have become pretty resolution-spoilt by the awesome screen on the 4S and this is the primary factor in wanting this new model.
With the following concerns, assuming that an iPad that I may buy might have one or more of them, could you please inform me of: any currently known official or unofficial fix, if the problem could most likely be resolved in an update or if it is likely that since the problem came to light that the later runs to be built were adjusted to avoid the problem? Thanks.
OK- first up, the bad wifi problem that people have. This is the biggest concern to me, as I use wifi a lot and won't have access to 4G, and only occasionaly access to 3G.
Secondly, the heating... OK this is not a deal breaker, I understand that it isn't a real problem however if it could be solved so that it runs almost as cool as the 2 that would be great.
Thirdly, charge times and the extra hour over 100%... Again I do realise that these aren't so much issues as just the way that it works, however I would hope that now lots of people have complained, an update would adjust the display to be more accurate, to say 100% only when it has fully charged, purely because I would rather know... Or perhaps have 100% change colour on absolute 100%. The other thing, 7 hours charging, is there a more powerful adaptor that 1: reduces the charge time, and 2: if you are using a powerdrinking app while charging, will actualy continue charging rather than just slowing the battery drain (I read that some apps will keep draining battery while on charge).
finaly, I have read about screen hue problems, this wont be too much of a problem, as I will be able to check this in store to be sure that the screen is nice, colour balanced and free of dead pixels, I will compare it to my GFs iPad 2 and also the iPhone 4, because I know that the iPad 2 is supposed to look a little more blue to give it a cold feel, while the new model and the iPhone 4S have a slightly yellowed screen for warmth, it's just that lots of people have complained about theres' being too yellow.
Thanks very much for any useful info on this.

A lot of the posts about lack of charging is because iPad "3" users are trying to use an iPod charger, iPhone charger or connected to their computer where they get the "Not Charging" indication. A few others had a defective charger that was replaced by Apple. It remotely possible that a few iPads have defective batteries or charging circuits.
Many of the wifi connection problems are related to the users brand of wireless routers, the router setup, or the need to select a different wireless channel due to interference.
The high temp problem seems to be when users are charging AND running games with intensive graphics. The display on the new iPad takes a lot more power than the iPad 2 display.
Overall I would guess that the chance of a defective iPad is less than 1%.

  • Few questions about Satellite A300D-14P functionality

I have model Satellite A300D-14P for one month. Warranty 2 yrs. I have few questions, and asking for help, and suggestions what I should do?
*My camera quality * is VERY poor, Only with very much light on, I can get generally ok picture quality. Indoor, beside turned on both options, night mode or backlight compensation I hardly can see my face, very dark and poor quality. Second problem is blue led light, it is annoying because half of picture is always blue, somehow that light taking half picture which is always blue:((( I used notebook model from L300 series ( cheaper than mine) with same camera and that blue light, it is working perfectly :(
*Battery life and start up Vista OS*? ??In power save mode hardly 1.5h ??? Just surfing and nothing else....I asked Toshiba support here in Serbia about that and they told me that it is normal, and measuring of battery life (2, ...h) by specifications, is when my display is off and computer don't do anything ??? They also told me that normal start up time for Vista OS is around 1.45min maybe more???
If I install win XP is it possible to get battery life longer?
Do I need to go in Toshiba service or what?
Thank you very much and sorry if I am boring :))))
    Nikola

    Hay Nikola
You are not boring at all and welcome on this forum.
    I don't know where to start. ;).
I have Satellite A300-1LI in front of me and I use it about a month now. Start-up time is very interesting theme and with right configuration you can optimise it and make it much shorter as with factory setting. Please read one very interesting thread about it under http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=134947
Do the same with your Satellite and I hope you will be satisfied.
Battery running time? I must say that information about two hours is realistic and I can confirm it. The same on my Satellite. But to be honest for mobile computing it is OK. I have changed several notebooks and just business notebook Tecra has had linger battery running time. What you can do is to check Toshiba support site and pick up info about more powerful battery. I am not sure but you can use Battery Pack (Li-Ion, 9 Cell, 6000mAh).
About cam I cannot say much. On my Satellite it works OK and I am satisfied. OK the quality is not the same like on good external webcams but for integrated cam it is OK.
If you are not satisfied try to talk with nearest service or try to compare it with some other Satellite by your local dealer.
So Nikola, if you have more questions please post again.

  • Just got a Macbook and have a few questions

Ok, so I just got my Macbook laptop today and because I have never owned a Mac product i just had a few questions
First off, is it safe to be plugged into the internet right off the bat or do I need to go out and buy some antivirus software? i have heard from some people that macs have built in antivirus and that they are also just in general less likely to get a virus then your average pc.
also just wondering, when i play a cd the disk reader/laser? whatever you would want to call it makes alot more noise then i expected it to. i didnt know if that was normal or not, and just wanted some opinions from other macbook users. thanks!!

On these forums, just about anyone you ask will say that there is no reason to get antivirus software. Most mac users don't have any installed. It's not viruses on the mac you really need to be worried about; it's stupid stuff like phishing or scams - things that don't have anything to do with the operating system - that you just have to watch out for. You'll be fine without antivirus software. The thing I really liked about my mac (windows user all my life; switched 6 months ago, haven't regretted it) is that instead of worrying about viruses and keeping my anti-virus/spyware software always up to date, I was just able to start using my mac, right out of the box.
They do make antivirus software for macs. If you really are that worried about it, go to:
    http://www.clamxav.com/
The ironic thing is that it checks for windows viruses (someone correct me if I'm wrong) so you don't pass them on. A windows virus won't have any effect on your mac.
Surf the net. Be productive. Stop worrying. Have fun. Welcome to Apple.
    ...not a bad little slogan
EDIT - wow, a million people posted while I was writing this reply. meh.

  • A few questions before I buy a new iMac/Mac mini and sign up for Creative Cloud.

    Hello Everyone,
I am looking to purchase a new Apple computer and sign up for Creative Cloud within the next week and I have a few questions that should be answered before I proceed.
My wife and I own a business and we will be using the CS6 apps to create brochures, Constant Contact mailings, product package inserts, edit product photography for print and web use, and short HD how-to videos. We are not graphics professionals or power users and wont be doing anything too complicated.
Any help and answers will be greatly appreciated.
I will start with the hardware questions first:
I am trying to decide between the iMac and the Mac mini.
The iMac is a 2.7Ghz Quad-core Intel core i5 and comes with 4GB of memory that is expandable to 16GB, which I will do for sure. It comes with a Radeon HD 6770M graphics card with 512MB of GDDR5 memory(not upgradable), and a 1TB HDD that runs at 7200RPM. This unit meets the specs required.
The 2.5Ghz Mac Mini comes with 4GB of memory that is expandable to 8GB, I will also do this. It has a Radeon HD 6630M graphics card with 256MB of GDDR5 memory(not upgradable), and a 500GB HDD that runs at 5400RPM. This unit meets all the spec(I think) except for the speed of the HDD.
Question: Will the mini run the software without too much of an issue considering the speed of the HDD?
Question: Will the iMac run the software significantly better to justify the price difference?
I already have 1 mini(purchased 4 months ago, with the same specs listed above) and will be purchasing a second computer for my wifes desk. If the mini will run CS6 fine, that is great and we can save a few bucks. If my mini will not run CS6 well, I will get the iMac for her desk as she will be doing the bulk of the work in that regard anyway.
Now a couple of software questions.
After reading hundreds of reviews and forum posts over the last few days I have seen many people having this or that issue. It seems to me that most of the issues are because of upgrades from Lion to Mountian Lion after installing CS6 first or trying to open CS3,4,5 files in CS6.
If you want to know what issues have me concerned take a look at just this one forum:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2012/07/adobe-cs-apps-mountain-lion-no-known-issues.html
Similar issues are discussed in the Apple forums as well as many other places around the web.
I am not a computer professional but I know enough to maintain my systems and keep them running smoothly.
We do not have any Adobe software installed on my mini and will not be opening any files from previous versions of Adobe product in the new CS6 software. These will be a clean installs on pristine systems running fully updated Mountian Lion OS's on both machines and creating new files from scratch.
Question: Should I be expecting any issues like the ones I have read in the forums and blogs or are these just the normal things that happen when upgrading to new software with multiple hardware configurations?
My feeling is that we will not be having too much of a problem due to the clean installs and no files from previous versions.
Next up, the Creative Cloud(CC) FAQ states that you can install on 2 machines but can't open stuff at the same time.
Question: Does this mean we can't be using any CS6 apps at the same time or just not using the same app at the same time?
Example: PS and PS on both machines at same time = No, PS on one and Dreamweaver on the other at the same time=Yes?
The CC FAQ page says Adobe will add Lightroom 4 later in 2012 while the main CC page lists it as available now.
    Question: Which is true?
My mini is registered to me, with my name, iTunes account, Apple ID etc.
Question: Do I need to do the initial set-up of the new machine with all my information to ensure the CS6 suite works on both machines? Do the computers need to be registered(as far as Apple configuration is concerned) to same person for them to work on one CC account or can I install CS6 on any 2 machines regardless of how they were initially set-up?
This may seem like a silly question but I want to avoid any problems before they happen.
Well, those are all of my questions at the moment. To anyone who made it this far in my looooong post, Thank You so much for your time. I appreciate your expertise and knowledge and hope that you can help me make this decision.
    Cheers,
    Alex Bogdan

    Alex,
I'll try and answer your questions as best I can.
    Qn 1 Which Mac.
Ans:- As I understand it both units will run Adobe CS6.
Which one really depends on what you wand from CS6. If you are looking for high end demand and performance, then I would go for the IMac
Your Specs for the Imac are right. However if you buy your IMac straight from Apple there are even higher specs.
              You can get:-
3.4 GHz i7 processor rather than the i5
2GB video card as opposed to a 1Gb video card.
Of course such a model will cost you more.
In the end it is needs compared with money to spend. That is only a decision you cam make.
Q2:- Will the higher cost for the Imac justify copst.
Ans:- Again it depends on what demands you intend to make on the hardware and software.
But I note you have a business and if that businees expects to high demand and high speedy performance then I suspect the Imac would be more able to provide your needs.
Again only you will know the answer to that.
    Q3:- Questions about CS6 reliability
Ans:- I have been with Adobe for way over 10 years.
Speaking, only for myself, it is the most reliable software on the market.
It is true that if you look down this form, like any other and I am thinking about the Apple discussions forum, you will find numerous instances of problems.
Again this is only my opinion, but although all these problems are real for the individuals:-
First it is not clear why they have the problem e.g. what have they done or not done.
Second, they are in the minority of the total users using the hardware / software.
The only problem I am aware of with CS6 is Acrobat X. I understand it has been sorted Adobe, however it cost me so much work I have removed it from my system and reverted to Acrobat 9
So what I am saying is that there are only two comapnies I rely 100% on: They are Adobe and Apple.
So if you are happy with my opinion I would not worry about Adobe CS6
    Qn 4:- CS6 0n 2 machines.
Ans:- Yes you will not be able to run the same program similtaneosly.
I believe, if it is important that you do run the same program together, that you can acquire a further licience from Adobe to do that.
You would need to contact Adobe about that.
    Qn 5:- Lightroom 4
Ans:- Lightroom is now available as part of Creative Cloud.
Qn 6:- Set up for individual machines
Ans:- I do not believe you do. Once you have set up your Creative Cloud account you go to the apps site and download the apps for each machine.
Each machine downloads the apps and your machine and the apps are registered by Adobe.
Here is something that you may want to know:-
Because I was so unhappy loosing all the Acrobat data with Acrobat X I ended up deleting Acrobat X
However as far as Creative Cloud is concered Acrobat X is still on my machine.
It is not a problem for me because I am happy with Acrobat 9, it fullfils my needs and has not crashed and lost me all my bookmarks.
              However here is the point:-
Adobe, when there was a problem with Acrobat X requested that no-one deletes the application.
Though I do not know for certain I believe registration of the apps you have with Creative Cloud are registered with Creative Cloud in their database. Therefore were you to delete an app, it will still be registered with Creative Cloud and you will not be able to download a further copy even though the app is no longer on your    machine.
Therefore it maybe not a good idea to delete an app when you no longer have a use for it. If you want it back I suspect you will have to contact Adobe Support
    Personal Comment:-
It is true many unfortunately have had all sorts of problems, including me with Acrobat X.
That said, Creative Cloud in my view has been a major advance in how Adobe delivers software. I have no regrets with signing up to Creative Cloud and I expect to remain with it.
Hope all of that goes some way to answering your questions.

  • New to IPhone and have a few Questions?

To start I want to say that I am a long time (25+ years) veteran of technology but am new the the IPhone. My IPhone is not Jailbroken and would like to keep it that way if I can. Allthgouh I did jailbrake it with blackra1n for about 30mins then I did a factory reload and let it be as it started acting stupid once I started installing apps from unofficial sources.;) Im a x86 nerd and NOT a MAC guy. I haven't sat down at a MAC/Apple in about 15/20 years.
I just got my first IPhone 3Gs/16GB. (Coming from a BlackBerry Curve 8310) the other day and although it is taking some time getting used to, I think I will like it more then I do once I get used to it.
Anyhow I have a few questions to start off with. I did some googleing already but just want to make sure I understand a few things.
All though I did the BlackRa1n jail break thing and installed a few apps then it locked up and failed to turn on or something so I did the whole reload from itunes and now its all good. Anyhow.....
1.) It appears as if one can not run a program from the home sreen and have it run in the background while doing other things? Take the many SIP Clients I have played with in the last 48 hours. Once I open the SIP Client and connect if I hit the physical button below the screen the program closes, thus the sip client no longer works. Pretty much most if not all apps iv installed from the App Store act like this. Is this the case? Does the IPhone not mutitask at all or verywell?
2.) Are there any SIP Clients that work over 3G? All the ones iv tried say they are for WIFI only. The SIP Clients work fine when on WIFI. It sounds like this is Apples way of controlling/monopolizing the voice/data/voip aspect of the platform/device. Im sure they would lose a lot of money if everyone did what I am trying to do.Just my opinion.
3.) Maybe I play with it to much but **** the battery dies fast. Is there anyway to optimize the battery at all other then for me not to use it as much?
4.) How can I remote lock it if I lose it or it gets stolen? I read somewhere this could be done.
5.) Are there any other Shells/HomeScreens/Themes that can replace the standard 4x4x4 row icons?
6.) The speaker phone (when on a call) seems kinda low even when turned all the way up. Is there any way to make it louder?
7.) I am using the built in VPN client to connect to my works PPTP Windows 2003 VPN server but the client randomly disconnects through out the day. Is there any way to have some type of keep alive set or are there any other VPN Clients that I can use?
Sorry for all this just thought I would ask for feedback.
Many thanks for any help anyone can provide,
    SomeOneOnLine

1.) It appears as if one can not run a program from the home sreen and have it run in the background while doing other things? Does the IPhone not mutitask at all or verywell?
The iPhone SDK does not permit ANY 3rd party apps from running in the background or multitasking. It does provide for push notifications which can simulate certain background activity in terms of receiving external notifications while the app is actually closed. This works reasonably well with IM apps, news, sports, weather, travel updates and some peer-to-peer games.
2.) Are there any SIP Clients that work over 3G? All the ones iv tried say they are for WIFI only.
Just how would the SIP server connect to the cell carrier 3G network? Do you know of ANY that do??
3.) Maybe I play with it to much but **** the battery dies fast. Is there anyway to optimize the battery at all other then for me not to use it as much?
3G voice and data connections are culprits. Avoid email push and frequent fetching. See this Apple article for detailed suggestions.
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html
4.) How can I remote lock it if I lose it or it gets stolen? I read somewhere this could be done.
MobileMe Find My iPhone will locate, set a passcode lock and optionally wipe all data from your iPhone. You have to be a MobileMe subscriber.
5.) Are there any other Shells/HomeScreens/Themes that can replace the standard 4x4x4 row icons?
No. Apple does not permit this.
6.) The speaker phone (when on a call) seems kinda low even when turned all the way up. Is there any way to make it louder?
You can troubleshoot your iPhone as described in the User Guide - restart, reset, reset settings, restore. Or, get hearing aids
7.) I am using the built in VPN client to connect to my works PPTP Windows 2003 VPN server but the client randomly disconnects through out the day. Is there any way to have some type of keep alive set or are there any other VPN Clients that I can use?
    See this Apple support article:

  • A few questions from someone new to Aperture (and DSLR photography)

Hi - I have just got my first DSLR camera (A Nikon D3000) and am trying out Aperture 3. I had a few questions which aren't all just necessarily Aperture related:
I have imported my library from iPhoto, however now all my albums are in alphabetical order, rather than date created. I only seem to have the option to arrange my albums by, "Kind", "Name" or "Manual". Any idea how I restore the date created order?
This may be too large a subject for here (I should probably buy a book on the subject), however JPEG, NEF and TIFF - I am shooting in raw mode which is generating NEF files. I had tried RAW+JPEG, but the basic JPEG this creates is really quite poor. The NEF files are generally around 7-12Mb. If I open them for editing in Photoshop, a TIFF file is generated in Aperture which looks to be over 8x the size of the original raw file, sometime over 100Mb. I then seem to be able to save it back as a JPEG at pretty much maximum quality which results in a file slightly smaller than the original raw file. Is it necessary to keep the large TIFF files once I've created a jpeg? Am I best off just keeping the finished jpeg and the original raw file in case I want to make changes?
When publishing to flickr, It would be good to be able to just publish the latest versions of all photos in an album. ie not the same photo in tiff, nef and jpg format. Is there an easy way to do this, or is it a case of manually picking each one?
Also - When uploading NEF files to flickr it would appear to convert them to jpg, which is kind of good I suppose, but does anyone know what level of quality the jpegs created are? Am I best off converting them to jpeg myself first and then uploading? If I did this then my albums would be full of duplicates in different formats, which leads back to my previous question about uploading just one version of each. That may be a question for the flickr forum...

You have jumped into the deep end with both feet.
With Aperture running select the single the Browser and you will find the sort controls under the Mobileme to New Smart Album icons depending on how stretched out you have the Inspector panel. There is the ability to sort by just about every parameter there either ascending or descending.
Can Aperture not convert your NEF files? You dont have to have Tiff files at all. See your Preferences regarding External Editor. How much storage space and your archiving requirements will influence your decision about retaining Tiff files.
I know nothing about Flickr but assume you will have to choose your own images. I doubt a Smart Album can select exactly what you need.
When uploading files online galleries generally optimise the images. You are wasting your time uploading massive Tiffs IMHO. Most web services work with jpegs I understand. Consult the Flickr help and support for their requirements and advice.
    Enjoy your new hobby.
    AW
Whether you have the room to save Tiff files as well as Raw files will probably decide whether you keep them or not.
