A few questions & ideas

Question 1
I am working on a large project where we are using Aperture. At the last location we were shooting talent and shooting at a rapid rate using canons wireless system. Aperture could not keep up and would skip frames while using the hot folder script. It finally got to the point where it was not updating at all. We are only transferring small jpgs to the computer. Does anyone else have a problem with the hot folder script and what is the best way to over come this? We will be shooting many more locations and we need the program to work perfectly.
Question 2
Sometime in during the shoot I need to get in to another program or manage other files on the computer. I am prohibited from doing so because Aperture keep on popping up after I hide it. It wants to show the new image. This feature is in all programs that you shoot too. Does anyone know how to turn it off so it will allow me to manage other thing while the shoot is taking place?
Question 3
I would like to create one project for each location and shoot to albums inside each project. At each location we are shooting 6-7 shots and it would be nice to have the project management done and not have to resort them after the fact. Is there any way to have the hot folder script see the albums and not just the project folders?
I know I am asking a lot but these features would take the program from being a good program to making it the best on the market for shooting tethered. Any help on these question would be grateful. I am sure I will be posting more question and ideas as we shoot more locations.

To get input for question 1 you'd need to tell us about your computer hardware (type, RAM, disk configuration, etc.)
For question 2, have you tried shrinking the Aperture window down to postage stamp size? Could it then remain unhiden?

  • A few questions before I buy a new iMac/Mac mini and sign up for Creative Cloud.

    Hello Everyone,
I am looking to purchase a new Apple computer and sign up for Creative Cloud within the next week and I have a few questions that should be answered before I proceed.
My wife and I own a business and we will be using the CS6 apps to create brochures, Constant Contact mailings, product package inserts, edit product photography for print and web use, and short HD how-to videos. We are not graphics professionals or power users and wont be doing anything too complicated.
Any help and answers will be greatly appreciated.
I will start with the hardware questions first:
I am trying to decide between the iMac and the Mac mini.
The iMac is a 2.7Ghz Quad-core Intel core i5 and comes with 4GB of memory that is expandable to 16GB, which I will do for sure. It comes with a Radeon HD 6770M graphics card with 512MB of GDDR5 memory(not upgradable), and a 1TB HDD that runs at 7200RPM. This unit meets the specs required.
The 2.5Ghz Mac Mini comes with 4GB of memory that is expandable to 8GB, I will also do this. It has a Radeon HD 6630M graphics card with 256MB of GDDR5 memory(not upgradable), and a 500GB HDD that runs at 5400RPM. This unit meets all the spec(I think) except for the speed of the HDD.
Question: Will the mini run the software without too much of an issue considering the speed of the HDD?
Question: Will the iMac run the software significantly better to justify the price difference?
I already have 1 mini(purchased 4 months ago, with the same specs listed above) and will be purchasing a second computer for my wifes desk. If the mini will run CS6 fine, that is great and we can save a few bucks. If my mini will not run CS6 well, I will get the iMac for her desk as she will be doing the bulk of the work in that regard anyway.
Now a couple of software questions.
After reading hundreds of reviews and forum posts over the last few days I have seen many people having this or that issue. It seems to me that most of the issues are because of upgrades from Lion to Mountian Lion after installing CS6 first or trying to open CS3,4,5 files in CS6.
If you want to know what issues have me concerned take a look at just this one forum:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2012/07/adobe-cs-apps-mountain-lion-no-known-issues.html
Similar issues are discussed in the Apple forums as well as many other places around the web.
I am not a computer professional but I know enough to maintain my systems and keep them running smoothly.
We do not have any Adobe software installed on my mini and will not be opening any files from previous versions of Adobe product in the new CS6 software. These will be a clean installs on pristine systems running fully updated Mountian Lion OS's on both machines and creating new files from scratch.
Question: Should I be expecting any issues like the ones I have read in the forums and blogs or are these just the normal things that happen when upgrading to new software with multiple hardware configurations?
My feeling is that we will not be having too much of a problem due to the clean installs and no files from previous versions.
Next up, the Creative Cloud(CC) FAQ states that you can install on 2 machines but can't open stuff at the same time.
Question: Does this mean we can't be using any CS6 apps at the same time or just not using the same app at the same time?
Example: PS and PS on both machines at same time = No, PS on one and Dreamweaver on the other at the same time=Yes?
The CC FAQ page says Adobe will add Lightroom 4 later in 2012 while the main CC page lists it as available now.
    Question: Which is true?
My mini is registered to me, with my name, iTunes account, Apple ID etc.
Question: Do I need to do the initial set-up of the new machine with all my information to ensure the CS6 suite works on both machines? Do the computers need to be registered(as far as Apple configuration is concerned) to same person for them to work on one CC account or can I install CS6 on any 2 machines regardless of how they were initially set-up?
This may seem like a silly question but I want to avoid any problems before they happen.
Well, those are all of my questions at the moment. To anyone who made it this far in my looooong post, Thank You so much for your time. I appreciate your expertise and knowledge and hope that you can help me make this decision.
    Cheers,
    Alex Bogdan

    Alex,
I'll try and answer your questions as best I can.
    Qn 1 Which Mac.
Ans:- As I understand it both units will run Adobe CS6.
Which one really depends on what you wand from CS6. If you are looking for high end demand and performance, then I would go for the IMac
Your Specs for the Imac are right. However if you buy your IMac straight from Apple there are even higher specs.
              You can get:-
3.4 GHz i7 processor rather than the i5
2GB video card as opposed to a 1Gb video card.
Of course such a model will cost you more.
In the end it is needs compared with money to spend. That is only a decision you cam make.
Q2:- Will the higher cost for the Imac justify copst.
Ans:- Again it depends on what demands you intend to make on the hardware and software.
But I note you have a business and if that businees expects to high demand and high speedy performance then I suspect the Imac would be more able to provide your needs.
Again only you will know the answer to that.
    Q3:- Questions about CS6 reliability
Ans:- I have been with Adobe for way over 10 years.
Speaking, only for myself, it is the most reliable software on the market.
It is true that if you look down this form, like any other and I am thinking about the Apple discussions forum, you will find numerous instances of problems.
Again this is only my opinion, but although all these problems are real for the individuals:-
First it is not clear why they have the problem e.g. what have they done or not done.
Second, they are in the minority of the total users using the hardware / software.
The only problem I am aware of with CS6 is Acrobat X. I understand it has been sorted Adobe, however it cost me so much work I have removed it from my system and reverted to Acrobat 9
So what I am saying is that there are only two comapnies I rely 100% on: They are Adobe and Apple.
So if you are happy with my opinion I would not worry about Adobe CS6
    Qn 4:- CS6 0n 2 machines.
Ans:- Yes you will not be able to run the same program similtaneosly.
I believe, if it is important that you do run the same program together, that you can acquire a further licience from Adobe to do that.
You would need to contact Adobe about that.
    Qn 5:- Lightroom 4
Ans:- Lightroom is now available as part of Creative Cloud.
Qn 6:- Set up for individual machines
Ans:- I do not believe you do. Once you have set up your Creative Cloud account you go to the apps site and download the apps for each machine.
Each machine downloads the apps and your machine and the apps are registered by Adobe.
Here is something that you may want to know:-
Because I was so unhappy loosing all the Acrobat data with Acrobat X I ended up deleting Acrobat X
However as far as Creative Cloud is concered Acrobat X is still on my machine.
It is not a problem for me because I am happy with Acrobat 9, it fullfils my needs and has not crashed and lost me all my bookmarks.
              However here is the point:-
Adobe, when there was a problem with Acrobat X requested that no-one deletes the application.
Though I do not know for certain I believe registration of the apps you have with Creative Cloud are registered with Creative Cloud in their database. Therefore were you to delete an app, it will still be registered with Creative Cloud and you will not be able to download a further copy even though the app is no longer on your    machine.
Therefore it maybe not a good idea to delete an app when you no longer have a use for it. If you want it back I suspect you will have to contact Adobe Support
    Personal Comment:-
It is true many unfortunately have had all sorts of problems, including me with Acrobat X.
That said, Creative Cloud in my view has been a major advance in how Adobe delivers software. I have no regrets with signing up to Creative Cloud and I expect to remain with it.
Hope all of that goes some way to answering your questions.

  • A few questions from someone new to Aperture (and DSLR photography)

Hi - I have just got my first DSLR camera (A Nikon D3000) and am trying out Aperture 3. I had a few questions which aren't all just necessarily Aperture related:
I have imported my library from iPhoto, however now all my albums are in alphabetical order, rather than date created. I only seem to have the option to arrange my albums by, "Kind", "Name" or "Manual". Any idea how I restore the date created order?
This may be too large a subject for here (I should probably buy a book on the subject), however JPEG, NEF and TIFF - I am shooting in raw mode which is generating NEF files. I had tried RAW+JPEG, but the basic JPEG this creates is really quite poor. The NEF files are generally around 7-12Mb. If I open them for editing in Photoshop, a TIFF file is generated in Aperture which looks to be over 8x the size of the original raw file, sometime over 100Mb. I then seem to be able to save it back as a JPEG at pretty much maximum quality which results in a file slightly smaller than the original raw file. Is it necessary to keep the large TIFF files once I've created a jpeg? Am I best off just keeping the finished jpeg and the original raw file in case I want to make changes?
When publishing to flickr, It would be good to be able to just publish the latest versions of all photos in an album. ie not the same photo in tiff, nef and jpg format. Is there an easy way to do this, or is it a case of manually picking each one?
Also - When uploading NEF files to flickr it would appear to convert them to jpg, which is kind of good I suppose, but does anyone know what level of quality the jpegs created are? Am I best off converting them to jpeg myself first and then uploading? If I did this then my albums would be full of duplicates in different formats, which leads back to my previous question about uploading just one version of each. That may be a question for the flickr forum...

You have jumped into the deep end with both feet.
With Aperture running select the single the Browser and you will find the sort controls under the Mobileme to New Smart Album icons depending on how stretched out you have the Inspector panel. There is the ability to sort by just about every parameter there either ascending or descending.
Can Aperture not convert your NEF files? You dont have to have Tiff files at all. See your Preferences regarding External Editor. How much storage space and your archiving requirements will influence your decision about retaining Tiff files.
I know nothing about Flickr but assume you will have to choose your own images. I doubt a Smart Album can select exactly what you need.
When uploading files online galleries generally optimise the images. You are wasting your time uploading massive Tiffs IMHO. Most web services work with jpegs I understand. Consult the Flickr help and support for their requirements and advice.
    Enjoy your new hobby.
    AW
Whether you have the room to save Tiff files as well as Raw files will probably decide whether you keep them or not.

  • A few questions on setting partitioning the hardrive.

    Hello,
I am reinstalling Arch because I want to make the jump from i686 to Arch64. I really want this to be the last time I reinstall an OS on this laptop, so I have a few questions on the most efficient way to set up the partitions.
    1) Is it safer to have a seperate boot partition? I really don't mind setting aside 100MB or so for boot, but I keep hearing you really don't have to do that with Arch anymore.
    2) How does optimization work? Are partitions that are created higher on the list faster to access? What I'm looking for is a really fast computer while in use. I don't care about boot time very much, and my swap drive is barely used. Would this be a good set up for what I'm looking for?
    SDA1 Root
    SDA2 VAR
    SDA3 Home
    SDA4 Swap
    SDA5 Boot
    3) Is ext4 a good idea? I really like the speed and all that, but it's still in development, right? When it's finished, would I be able to update the filesystems or once I make them are they always stuck in their current state? I was thinking ext2 for boot then ext4 for everything else.

I'm not too sure on that one as i have never tried it but it might be possible to boot from your live cd, backup your /var partition reformat it then copy the data back on to it but don't quote me on that.
I don't think you will notice any difference regarding which order you mount your partition's, I have been through a bunch of different partition setup's and have not noticed any speed difference between them only between different filesystem's
I have the same partition setup as your first post minus the boot partition
    /dev/sda1 / ext4 defaults,noatime 0 1
    /dev/sda2 /var reiserfs defaults,noatime 0 1
    /dev/sda3 /home ext4 defaults,noatime 0 1
    /dev/sda4 swap swap defaults 0 0

  • A few questions and some things we found about Memory Management

We have been development a pretty complex RIA in flash; true
we probably should have used flex but we are very heavily invested
in flash and moving to flex was not really an option due to time
constraints and the learning curve associated with changing. That
reminds me are the Flex UI Objects going to be made available for
Flash CS3 I mean that advanced datagrid would be nice?
The application is a order processing and document
management system that has around 150 swf’s and I am posting
here to let people know what we found through our development and
testing cycles and also have a few questions that I am hoping
someone will at least point me in the right direction.
We were kind of disappointed to find that you could no
longer duplicate Movies and were forced to reload them if we wanted
different instances, but we got over that fast. Keeping this in
mind we decided to make as many dynamic screens as we could but
these turned out to be horribly time consuming. I mean sure we
could make the fields jump around like fleas on a dogs back (and it
was a great joke) but not very practical. So back to the IDE and
fla creation we went. This leads me to my first question has anyone
see heard of or thought about a SWF file reader that would read the
layout of a SWF and then generate the actionscript as output?
As we were developing we found that it was more complex, and
I think unnecessarily so, to get connected to a database. We use
ColdFusion as our “middleware” so it wasn’t to
bad and this leads me to my next question. Is there or has there
been any indication that Flex data services or well I guess BlazeDS
now is available for Flash CS3?
So we went on our merry little way and everything was going
great until testing this is when we started to see what kind of
memory flash really eats up. In the beginning our app would take up
a gig through the course of a day.
Any Class that we created we added a CleanUp method to it.
Yes we used weak listeners, yes we destroyed, and all references to
the main movies, and yes that was it the main movies.
Don’t be fooled the same way we were. The Garbage
    collection simulation
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplayer/articles/garbage_collection.html
does not really tell you the whole story. Even though if you cut
the line from the root the simulation suggests that the rest of the
objects that you have created within that object will be marked and
    collected. Not so.
After much testing we found that if we wanted a full recovery
of memory the object and it’s sub objects and sub sub ojects
within arrays also with sub objects must be deallocated and then
assinged null to get full collection, I say full but really mean
between 90-95% reminds me of my C programming days.

  • A few questions about After Effects and CGI (Computer-generated Imagery)

    Hi,
I'm very new to After Effects and this forum. But I have a few questions.
Now, I have recently started a movie project with my friend at a workshop. It's an action/sci-fi film and I'm probably going to be the editor and if needed in charge of visual and/or special effects. This sounds like a pretty big job for a noob, but we don't have a time limit with the project so there's time to learn.
But to my questions. I've thought of introducing CGI to myself (very simple of course). I've studied the use of blender, and I think I'll use it for the modelling and animation. But should Ae be used in any stage of producing the CGI or should everything be done in blender? If I do, how? Am I going in the wrong direction (wrong kind of software, etc.)?
Also, I'm not talking of fully producing the scene with the computer, but adding things like characters or items, maybe special effects.
I'm hoping for an answer to all my questions, but if you have just one or two answers I'm happy to hear them too. You're also welcome to correct me if I've misunderstood something. Please ask for further specifications if you need any!

    1. Welcome to the family. AE is big, Really big. It's hard. Really hard. You have no idea how hard AE is to learr and to master.
    2. No time limit is good but you will need some money.
    3. This is not a Blender forum. You want to explore filmmaking, CGI and Blender-specific forums for that kind of assistance.
    4. AE is for your compositing and special effects. But you will need to learn how both apps work before you can decide how to divide up your project. A comparison would be shooting your film. Are you using a DSLR? Do you know why? Or are you using a GoPro? Another example might be Apple's Final Cut Pro. You can edit audio in it but it's better to use an audio application. You can do some special effects in FCP but it's best to do complex stuff in Motion of After Effects. How do you know what app is appropriate Lots of experience. Lots of failures.
    5. We were all new to AE and to vidoe editing and to special effects at one time or another. The user forums are not places to learn how to use these applications. You do that with tutorials and books and tons of time. Learning to use Blender to make a robot move is one thing. Making the robot into a character that compels the audience to care about it is quite another. Using AE to create a layer of clouds is one thing. Having those clouds react to the bow waves created by your flying robot as it approaches sonic speeds is quite another challenge.

  • Few questions about mac pro before buying

    Hello all!
I may be buying a mac pro in a month or so and have a few questions about it.
    1. ) Any one know when Apple may release the latest mac pro? Don't wanna buy some thing that'll be significantly obsolete in a few days
    2. ) Is it possible to use SATA optical drives internally? I have a SATA blu ray drive I'd like to take from my PC, if that's possible.
    3. ) Is it possible to get a graphics cards better than the 8800 GT for video games? (For use in OS X)
    4. ) Finally, is there a significant performance difference between Apple's seemingly super expensive RAM and 3rd party RAM? (Other than the heat syncs)
    Thanks for any replies.

    1. We have no idea when Apple will release any product until it's released. This is a user-to-user site so we have no more information about future products than you do.
    2. Yes, it's possible. There are two additional SATA ports on the motherboard.
    3. The only graphic cards are those provided by Apple when you order the computer as well as the non-Apple supplied ATI HD-3870 Mac/PC card. The 8800 and 3870 have close performance specs. You can find some benchmarks at Bare Feats.
    4. There's no difference between the RAM Apple installs and what you can purchase on the open market. As long as the RAM meets the required specifications and has the requisite heat sink it will work just fine.

  • EBS 12.1.3: a few questions about cloning

    Hi,
We have EBS 12.1.3 on AIX 7.1.
A few questions about cloning from shared application tier environment to non-shared application tier environment. We have been following "Cloning Oracle Applications Release 12 with Rapid Clone [ID 406982.1]"
    Source environment (shared app tier):
    - Two active application nodes and LB
    - One active database and one passive database setup with Oracle Data Guard.
    - SSL termination at the load balancer
    - PCP implemented
    Target environment (non-shared app tier):
    - One active application node
    - One active database node
    - No SSL
    - No PCP
After the cloning was completed we noticed the following problems in the target system:
    1) Home page cannot be accessed as application tier $CONTEXT_FILE still contains "https" and ssl termination settings.
    Workaround:
Modify (with text editor) Application Tier $CONTEXT_FILE as follows.
    <webentryurlprotocol oa_var="s_webentryurlprotocol" customized="yes">http</webentryurlprotocol>
    <sslterminator oa_var="s_enable_sslterminator">#</sslterminator>
    <login_page oa_var="s_login_page" customized="yes">http://myhost.mydomain.com:8000/OA_HTML/AppsLogin</login_page>
    <externURL oa_var="s_external_url" customized="yes">http://myhost.mydomain.com:8000</externURL>
Run AutoConfig and start application tier.
Is there a better and supported solution for this?
    2) Concurrent managers do not work correctly as they have still old node names (used in PCP in the source system). Workaround used:
    1. Logon to EBS web GUI and remove all nodes from all concurrent managers.
    2. Shutdown application tier. Verify that all concurrent managers have been shutdown. If not, kill the processes manually
    3. As apps user run cmclean.sql
    4. Restart application tier
Is there a better solution for this?
    3) Database changes from ARCHIVELOG mode to nonarchivelog mode in the target system. Is there anyway to prevent this?
    4) Also, we would like to perform a full clone (app + db tiers) from production without shutting down the application. Is this possible? What would be the best documents to describe this? In Production, we have Oracle Data Guard setup with physical standby as per "Oracle Tech Note: Business Continuity for Oracle E-Business Release 12 Using Oracle 11g Physical Standby Database [ID 1070033.1]". This can be used when performing a hot clone for the database, right? What about the application tier? Steps described in 406982.1 include running AutoConfig in which application tier should be down. Does the application need to be down when running "Maintain Snapshot Information"?
    5) One final question (not related to cloning). Oracle Enterprise Manager console webUI has recently stopped working in IE8. E.g. https://myhost.mydomain.com:5501/em gives "Page cannot be displayed". This was working correctly last week. In Firefox, the same link is working fine. Any ideas how to fix this?
Thanks for your answers in advance.
    BR,
    TH

    1) Home page cannot be accessed as application tier $CONTEXT_FILE still contains "https" and ssl termination settings.
    Workaround:
Modify (with text editor) Application Tier $CONTEXT_FILE as follows.
    <webentryurlprotocol oa_var="s_webentryurlprotocol" customized="yes">http</webentryurlprotocol>
    <sslterminator oa_var="s_enable_sslterminator">#</sslterminator>
    <login_page oa_var="s_login_page" customized="yes">http://myhost.mydomain.com:8000/OA_HTML/AppsLogin</login_page>
    <externURL oa_var="s_external_url" customized="yes">http://myhost.mydomain.com:8000</externURL>
Run AutoConfig and start application tier.
Is there a better and supported solution for this? No, you need to edit the context file manually and run AutoConfig.
    2) Concurrent managers do not work correctly as they have still old node names (used in PCP in the source system). Workaround used:
    1. Logon to EBS web GUI and remove all nodes from all concurrent managers.
    2. Shutdown application tier. Verify that all concurrent managers have been shutdown. If not, kill the processes manually
    3. As apps user run cmclean.sql
    4. Restart application tier
Is there a better solution for this? You are following the best approach. You could update the node details from the backend if you want.
    3) Database changes from ARCHIVELOG mode to nonarchivelog mode in the target system. Is there anyway to prevent this?By default, Rapid Clone will create the target database in noarchivelog mode.
Correct.
What about the application tier? Steps described in 406982.1 include running AutoConfig in which application tier should be down. Does the application need to be down when running "Maintain Snapshot Information"?You can copy the application tier node files while the application is up. And, you do not need to shutdown the application to run "Maintain Snapshot Information".
If it is working from one browser, then it should not be an EM issue. Have you tried from a different client and see if this works? Have you changed any setting in your IE browser? Please make sure you add the EM URL to the trusted sites list.
    Thanks,
    Hussein

  • Adobe to ditch flash for mobile devices! A few questions

Just read the news. Have a few questions
    1. Is AIR still going to be used for cross platform deployment as that is what I am using now ie: will it be used to deploy html5 apps/programmes?
    2. What tool/IDE will adobe be using for html5 - flash? flex?
    3. All of our multimedia swfs etc... - can they be exported/used in an html5 environment
    4. html5 coding - is it similar to actionscript 3 ie: do we have to start all over again - back to school?
    5. Games coded with actionscript 3. Can these games be exported to html5 or must they be rewritten?
Flash stays for pc it looks like.
So it is no longer multiplatform - we will have to code for flash on pc and html5 for mobile devices - is that right or will there be some kind of packager that will export our flash to html5
    Just a few questions

I don't work for Adobe so my understanding may not be 100% accurate but here we go...
    1. Is AIR still going to be used for cross platform deployment as that is what I am using now ie: will it be used to deploy html5 apps/programmes?
Adobe will be concentrating on developing AIR for packaging  apps for mobile devices. AIR is ActionScript based and it does not produce HTML5 apps.
    2. What tool/IDE will adobe be using for html5 - flash? flex?
HTML5 itself is just a flavour of HTML and therefore Dreamweaver is the Adobe tool for it For Javascript based timeline animation etc, Adobe has Edge http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/edge/
    3. All of our multimedia swfs etc... - can they be exported/used in an html5 environment
Adobe has Wallaby http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/wallaby/ for this - I'm not sure how active the development is lately though. In any case it's impossible to replicate all features of Flash in HTML5.
    4. html5 coding - is it similar to actionscript 3 ie: do we have to start all over again - back to school?
Again HTML5 itself is just a simple set of HTML tags. JavaScript is very similar to ActionScript, as AS is based on JavaScript (ECMAScript). For example HTML5 Canvas drawing API is very similar to AS3 drawing API. Therefore if you know AS, at least you know the basics of JS syntax.
    5. Games coded with actionscript 3. Can these games be exported to html5 or must they be rewritten?
If you want it to run on browsers, yes. If you want to convert into apps then AIR does that.

  • Financial Reporting using BPC 5.1: A few questions

    Hello,
A client of mine is doing an assessment of using BPC 5.1 as a financial report writing tool versus BI/BEx. They are not currently using BPC for either planning or consolidations but that might happen in the future. The financial data is being extracted from the SAP BI system and being reported on in this pilot implementation. There are a few questions I have:
    1) How common is it for organizations to be using BPC as just a financial report writing tool but not for planning & consolidations?
    2) We have come across some constraints in using hierarchies in BPC which was not the case in BEx. We are having issues picking and choosing hierarchies. We have not been able to select a particular dependent node of a hierarchy. Let's say that A is the parent node and B and C are child nodes in a hierarchy. We've tried every trick but are not able to select either B or C individually. Moreover if we want both B and C, we are forced to create a hierarchy for B and C. This is not correct. This is a pretty basic requirement. Has anyone come across this restriction? If this is how BPC 5.1 works, is SAP planning on fixing this in BPC 7.0 do that it works like BEx works today?
I look forward to your help, advice and inputs. We are in a bind and relevant responses will be awarded full points.
    Thanks,
    Jon

I think it is very common for customer to utilize the tool JUST for reporting.  The idea is to utilize the tool for as many purposes as possible.  Customers use it purly for Operational reporting, planning specific, functional specific, or just plain simplified way to get needed data into the users hands via excel and the ability to build reports on the fly or using predefined templates which are highly flexible.
As for your second question, There is no direct method for selecting or "checking" a bundle of members to use in a report from the current view.  However, there is an indirect method that may be built using EVDRE.  It involves building an opening Tab in an BPC for Excel report, selecting the members viia the copy function in the current view, pasteing them to a section in the tab, running basic excel tests that aggregarte the members into a useable list for an EVDRE function, used in the MEMBBERSET section of a given dimension, that will then expand and retrieve the data for those members  in the that will be run in a second Excel tab.  Once you see it in action, it does the same thing  or almost the same function you are requesting.
I am not certain if the process will be fixed in future releases, but if you like the feature, please contact product support and log an enhancement request, so as to formalize the request.  There are other who hold the same sentiment.
    Hope this helps.

  • Just got a new iMac, a few questions

Hi, hopefully you guys can help me out, I just purchased a G5 iMac to replace my aging dell desktop, and now i'm more or less completely os x dependant (I've had an ibook for a few months now). Anyway, I have a few questions:
    1. Does anyone know of a (free) mail notifier tool, that will alert me when I recieve new pop3 mail? I used to use AIM for this in windows
    2. Anyone know of a good (free, again) IRC client?
    3. I noticed earlier that my screen was flickering, it seems to have subsided for now, but is that normal to encounter in a new display? It wasn't really bad flicker, but I could see it.
    4. I leave my desktops on 24/7x365, will that be a problem with this iMac? Display shuts off of course after 30 mins
    5. Should I get the extended warranty? I'm usually against them, but I am expecting this computer to last me at least 3 years (for $1300 it better!) before I upgrade, as I got that much out of a Dell and from what I understand, Mac's do not age nearly as fast as Windows pc's.
    Thank you for any help,

    iChat works well.

You could set the iMac to go to sleep after non use. My Macs are
always sleeping when not in use, waking them up takes seconds.
Unlike windoze, never knew if it would be locked up or not.

It is well worth the cost. Never know what might happen. Also
it is good insurance for future upgrades. I traded in my G4 tower
purchased two years ago for 75% of what I paid for it. Apple care
transfers, giving the buyer the remainder of your warranty.

  • A Few Questions About The GTX 580 Twin Frozr/OC in SLI

    Hi everyone!
I have a few questions if you guys don't mind answering them, first thing though to make it clear this system is not built yet but the build will start soon.
My first question is whether or not this PSU is capable of running two GTX 580 Twin Frozr/OC in SLI:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139015&Tpk=AX850
    +3.3V@25A, +5V@25A, +12V1@70A, [email protected], +5VSB@3A
My second question is whether or not the GTX 580 Twin Frozr/OC will come with a SLI bridge connector long enough to accomplish a connection over this distance:
If not where can I buy a bridge capable of accomplishing this?, the reason for this distance is to keep the bottom card from pushing air onto the top one.
The above is a normal ATX form factor motherboard or to be more specific a ASRock P67 EXTREME6.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157231

    Quote
    EDIT-
I'm looking at the picture right now and it looks like the bridge that comes with the motherboard is not long enough, any suggestions on where to buy one?
nope no idea, ask your reseller
    Quote
I didn't mean the Watts I mean the Amps, from other threads in this board it seems that some PSU's aren't up to the task of supplying the card with enough Amps, I was wondering if that PSU could supply enough for both.
Well you can figure from the graph
With one VGA it drains total 447W, where single 580GTX need 40A-42A,
adding second the same VGA to the system drains total 719W
    So 719-447=272W, 272W/12=23A, 42A+23A=65A
    or simple 719/12=60A

BTW, I would also like to say I'm currently using a MSI board in my current build and I love it!

  • Switching from PC - Have a few questions

I have read the forums and talked to AppleCare support and I have a few questions on the Mac Pro.
    1. I was told by Apple that using RAM other than the overpriced "Apple" brand would void the warranty (I typically use matched Mushkin or Crucial)- is there any point in getting the AppleCare insurance then?
    2. Appple told me that Western Digital Raptor 10,000 RPM HD's were not supported, yet I see a number of you use this drive - are you using a SATA adapter or putting it one of the 4 drive bays?
    3. Am I limited to Apple's Superdrive DVD/CD or will any ATAPI drive work?
    4. The graphics card situation is pathetic - does anyone know is there are planned updates before I spend $700 on 2 ATI 1900's to run 2 30" Cinema displays. Does Apple typically come out with new products at the same time each year?
    5. Does anyone know of software to control multiple monitors i.e. Designate virtual desktops on a specific monitor, or specify that Application A opens on monitor 1 while Application B opens on monitor 2?
Any help will be appreciated - Apple doesn't seem to be very forthcoming on these topics - I am still anxious to rid myself of the virus a day problem and Microsoft software that becomes slower and less productive with every revision.

    1. I was told by Apple that using RAM other than the overpriced "Apple" brand would void the warranty (I typically use matched Mushkin or Crucial)- is there any point in getting the AppleCare insurance then?
It won't void the warrantee (unless you damage the computer when installing it), but it won't be covered. If it goes for service, remove the non-Apple memory first (it's a good idea to do that first, anyway, to see if it fixes the problem).
    2. Appple told me that Western Digital Raptor 10,000 RPM HD's were not supported, yet I see a number of you use this drive - are you using a SATA adapter or putting it one of the 4 drive bays?
    Same as above.
    3. Am I limited to Apple's Superdrive DVD/CD or will any ATAPI drive work?
No. Most ATA (or SATA) optical drives will work.
    5. Does anyone know of software to control multiple monitors i.e. Designate virtual desktops on a specific monitor, or specify that Application A opens on monitor 1 while Application B opens on monitor 2?
Many application remember the last monitor they used. Some (e.g. Graphics Converter) have preference settings to put the main window on one display, the controls on the other. Some (e.g QuickTime Player, VLC have view settings to put the full screen output on a selected monitor.

  • A few questions about how ZPM works.

We have patch management (in ZCM 11.2.2), but honestly don't use it much. I have a few questions about how it works that might make me use it more, if I understand it more.
If I deploy a patch (or a set of patches), it creates a bundle for that deployment. That bundle seems to include actions that deploy the actual patch bundles (correct?). Do I have to recreate a new deployment bundle every time I want to push a new patch? i.e. If I push a Java update, and a month later, a new one comes out, do I build out a new bundle with the new patch in it, or do I modify the old one?
Once the patch is deployed, can I safely delete that deployment bundle, or should they just pile up?
Is there a way to "auto-approve" patches? Lets say I always want a group of machines to have the latest Adobe Flash Player patches. Can I set up ZPM to automatically cache and push the latest patches for a specific product, or do I have to manually remediate each patch? (I'm thinking of how MS's WSUS does "auto-approval")
I see most packages aren't cached in list, but occasionally, a patch is cached without me touching it. Why? Can I change what gets automatically cached?
Thanks for any help/answers you can provide.

For #1, (assuming you're not using baselines), you would check the new version of the patch (vulnerability) and do a new deployment.
#2 - once you're satisified that the machines are deployed (or the best to your ability) you can delete the DEPLOYMENT package. It doesn't delete the actual vulnerability bundles to my knowledge. That's why it's a good idea to name your bundle deployments with something meaningful, IMO (and maybe include a nice desription).
#3 - currently I don't believe this is possible. I know you can probably configure it to auto-download the patches, but not auto-deploy everything. Given the propensity for software to wreck other things (hello MS .NET patches), this is probably not a good idea. At least I'd never auto-download and auto-deploy any patches without testing them first, and certainly take my servers a little more cautiously than my workstations.
#4 - I think you can configure what's cached, but I could be wrong.
I know there's a lot of improvements coming in the pipeline, and it doesn't hurt to "vote" for your enhancements via the enhancement system (more work for Shaun--haha)

  • A few questions before I buy Logic Pro (also anyone use M-Audio Ozone w/it?

Hello. I just bought a mac (my first one). I plan on getting Logic Pro, but have a few questions.
-Do I need an audio interface to use the program?
-Does anyone use the M-Audio Ozone with Logic? If so, do you recommend it? I know USB isn't as fast as Firewire
-If the Ozone isn't a good audio interface, which M-Audio interface do you recommend? (i might be using Protools M-Powered as well so that's why I want M-Audio)
-Is there a plugin similar to McDSP Filterbank for Logic?
I won't have too much hardware so I don't need too many ins/outs.
    Thanks

Ok well do you have a piano? If you take courses you probably need a full piano unless you only want to do synths and pop music, the Ozone will not do. Do take this into consideration, 25 keys is very very small. The cheapest best piano IMHO is the Yamaha P60; piano playing needs weighted keys.
The audio interface converts analog sound to digital and transfers it to the computer. The latency comes from the transport (firewire, usb, IDE), from the computer (software, operating system and drivers) and from the analog/digital conversion. The audio interface also does the reverse, it provides many outputs for speakers and headphones. It can also optionaly provide MIDI I/O.
There are MIDI only input/outputs too, which allow you to plug in any MIDI device, such as a Yamaha P60 piano for instance.
The controller is usually a piano like device (some aren't, they provide only buttons) that sends MIDI information to other MIDI devices (like Logic, via the computer's MIDI I/O). Synths can act as MIDI controllers but provide much more (such as the ability to generate sound).
The Ozone is both, it displays itself as a MIDI controller through it's keyboard and 8 control knobs, as well as an audio interface with 2 inputs and 1 output. That's why it's good at what it does, it's cheap and compact and does all basic IO. But if you won't record anything, a normal MIDI controller is enough. But if you have monitors, maybe the output from the Mac isn't good enough. In terms of sonic quality the Ozone is okay.
