A few questions on using iCloud to locate a lost iPad...

I've read the posts on a lost iPad, and why it might show up as "offline" when trying to locate it, but it seems like iCloud should be able to identify it by the serial # even after a thief has reset it.  Could a thief also reset the serial #?
Another question, I know it was turned on, and I know it had plenty of juice in the battery.  I had the 4-digit passcode feature working.  Does that mean that if someone doesn't actually punch in the correct code, and then log on to a wi-fi server, iCloud will never see it?
You know how when you lose something you backtrack in your mind to where you last saw it?  Well, I've done that, and there are only 2 possibilities. 1: It was stolen from a locked vehicle in a parking lot with lots of surveillance cameras, and the thief left behind a couple other things, way more valuable, and less easy to trace, and the vehicle was left undamaged, and still locked, or 2: I left it on the roof of the vehicle, and it fell off a few miles down the road.
I think possibility "2" is the most likely scenario, so that leads to 2 more possibilities, 1: It got destroyed, or 2: It's lying next the road, working ( i have it one of those "ballistic" cases which I've inadvertently tested a few times, and they really do work quite well), but it's not logged onto a local wi-fi a few miles from my house.  Well, obviously, if it's destroyed, it's definitely "OFFline", but if the second possibility happened, is there any way that iCloud could find it?
Sorry this is turning into a short story, but in thinking about this, it's led to some other questions...
If it fell behind my dresser, and is in "dormant" mode (i.e. No one has punched in the passcode), can iCloud find it?  If the answer is "no", want if I got rid of the passcode screen, would iCloud be able to find it?
If a thief got it, and methodically went through all the code combinations (there are only 1,000. How long could that take?), and got to my e-mail, could he download all of my IMAP e-mail?  Is there someway to keep people from accessing an IMAP e-mail account once they're "in"?
I guess what I'm saying is, if I'm giving Apple permission to follow my iPad, and presumably ME, all over the planet, but iCloud can't find my iPad unless I, or some thief, enters the passcode, and logs on to a wi-fi connection, then what's the point of having "Find my iPad"?

Also...
Are you saying that in the "behind the dresser" scenario, it wouldn't be connected to my home wi-fi until I punched in the code?  In that case, I would have already found it, so no need to use "Find My iPad".  How about this?  I get rid of the code screen, so all I have to do is punch the button to get it out of the "dormant" mode, and go to my main screen.  When it's sitting there "dormant", (with a black screen) is it still connected to my wi-fi, at least to the extent that iCloud could find it?  If my new iPad is 4G, and I set up a data plan, would that make it easier for iCloud to find it, or does it only work with wi-fi?
Is there anywhere in the iPad e-mail app that would make it so I'd have to put in a password each time I wanted to access my accounts?  I'd try to figure it out myself, but obviously I don't have mine with me right now.
As I understand it, now that I've gone on my PC, and used the "Find My iPhone" app, my iPad will be locked as soon as someone connects it to wi-fi, and it will stay locked until I log back onto iCloud, and unlock it.  Is that the case?  Also, will I get an e-mail if it gets back online, or do I need to just keep checking?
Thank you for the reply, and also for correcting my math.  It makes me breath a little easier.  It was only gone for about 12 hours before I locked it.  However, something just occurred to me.  I heard a true story about a hotel where someone kept breaking into the little safes in each room.  It turns out that a bellhop was putting some substance on all the keypads, so when a person entered their personal code, it would show him the 4 keys that had been touched.  With that information, he knew the the four digits. He just had to get the order right.  I'm not going to embarrass myself trying to do math again, but it greatly reduced the amount of time it took him to get in the safe.
If you look at your iPad from an angle (I'd do it with my own, but...), I'd be willing to bet you that there are some perceptible "dots" on the screen, from the oils in your fingertips, and since the keypad is above the keyboard level on the screen, you might be leaving hints as to what your code is.  I've thought of a couple ways to remedy this (one's really cool), so if anybody from Apple is reading this, get back to me.
Thanks again for the help.

  • Wanna locate my lost ipad wi-fi

wanna locate my lost ipad-wifi ......?

If your device isn't logged into a known wifi network, you're back to the good old fashoined way of finding....remember where you last had it and look.
The 'find my' app will only work if your device is on a known wifi network (unless it's a cellular device)

  • A question about using iCloud?

Since iCloud backs up app data, what happens when (having two iDevices linked with the same apple account, icloud account etc.) the same app used on both devices have different data. For example, after purchasing a new iPad and restoring it using iCloud, the internal apps, movies, and memory was exactly the same as my iPhone. However, if I go and play Cut the Rope and receive a score of 2 on the iPad and 3 on the iPhone, which one will be kept in iCloud when I back up both devices?
Another question. How do I keep all my devices linked together at the same time? For example if I play Cut the Rope and get a score of 3, it'll immediately appear on my other iDevice. (I'm just using Cut the Rope as an example.)

Yeah but when I started up my iPad, it was like an exact copy of my iPhone.
That's because you set it up using the latest iCloud backup of your iPhone.
How do I make sure that iCloud constantly updates both my devices for the app data?
As I said, iCloud backs up each device independently. iCloud does not automatically sync app data between devices, unless the app developer has specifically developed the app to do that and you have turned the option on in the individual apps settings.
Backup and sync are different things.

  • A few questions about using PS3 with 27" iMac display...

Hey people, I had a few questions about how I could possibly get my ps3 connected to the iMac's 27" screen. First of all, could you guys list some adapters that would be able to convert the HDMI to Mini displayport? That would be great. The only one I know of is that Dr. Bott Digital Video link.
Okay secondly, I was wondering if I do get the the ps3 connected with the iMac's display with an adapter to convert HDMI to mini DisplayPort, would it be in HD? Would I be able to play ps3 games or watch blu-ray movies in 1080p HD format?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
This has been asked a number of times here since the intro of the 27" iMac. The answer is very expensive US$149 or more converters and sometimes even more expensive to maintain the resolutions that you seek.

    Hi Pierre,
There's no way to merge them yet, so all you can do now is make 1 of them the master ID for iCloud. You have to continue to use the other for previous iTunes, Mac App Store updates. Have you read:

Many thanks for your prompt reply. I did indeed check that my ID was the same on both devices but I have just decided to re-enter my Account name and password on my iPhone under Settings/iCloud and this time suddently it created a Photo Stream album on my iPhone under Photos/Albums that did not exist before and I now have 43 identintical pictures on both my iPad and my iPhone so I don't know what magic you have but it worked and all is now well. Many thanks indeed from an admirer in the UK!

  • I am so frustrated. I found some kind of Apple chatline on my Iphone and was communicated with Krystal when we were cut off. I am know on my computer because I cannot find it on my phone. I am trying to find out how to use Icloud to locate my phone in my

Where did I leave off? Anyway, I found some kind of chatline on my phone. She was in the midst of helping me to use the computer to call myself. I have my phone but I often lose it in the house. I was told that the computer can make the alarm go off. Can someone help me?

Did you set up Find My iPhone when you first set up your phone? If so, you can log into icloud.com with your Apple ID and use Find My iPhone there. If you didn't, there is no way to do what you are asking.

  • Using iCloud to locate a missing iPod Touch.

If my iPod Touch is stolen and someone swipes it clean would I still be able to locate it via iCloud?  I know it goes by Apple ID but does the serial number of the device have any significance in that situation?
To make a long story short-ish: My son lost his iPod Touch when visiting his grandparents out of state.  It was lost in one of two locations: a movie theater or a family cabin.  The movie theater lost-and-found came up empty and the cabin has been searched (although I'm not sure how thorough they were as it's a big place and there's a lot of stuff there).  It went missing on Tuesday evening but they didn't realize it was gone until Wednesday morning.  I was informed Thursday morning and I immediately checked iCloud to see if I could locate it.  It's been "offline" or "not found" every time I check.  The battery was dead when it was lost, but I set up a message to be sent informing whoever "finds" it that the ipod is lost, belongs to a child, and gave a phone number to contact me, for whatever it's worth.  It should also lock itself, but obviously this can only happen if it connects to wifi.  Since there was a good gap of time between the iPod going missing and me finding out about it, I'm afraid someone has already swiped it and kept it for themselves.  Mail, Safari and all the good stuff has been blocked via parental controls so unless they share his taste in music or games they'd be out of luck.  My kid is devastated as he saved for a really long time to by that for himself. I really wish there was a way to flag an iPod's serial number as stolen within the Apple community.
Thanks for any help/insight you can give me.

Thank you.  At this point I guess our only hope is that it's sitting on a shelf somewhere at the house and my kid and my dad are just terrible at finding things.

  • A few questions about using an XML file to add text into a TextArea component set as html

    I'm using AS2 in Flash CS3.
I have a TextArea component in the stage that's loading its text from an XML and I've been able to use the ul and li tags to create lists. However, when I try to include a nested list it just inserts a line break between the nested list and the main list rather than indent it further. Is there a solution for this issue?
Failing that, how would I be able to add non-breaking spaces into the XML so they will render inside the TextArea component? I've tried   and   without success. I scoured the net for some help with this and found some information about modifying the font embedding xml file with a new entry for the non-breaking space and that didn't work either, so that leaves me somewhat stumped.

flash doesn't handle nested lists (as you now know).  you can work-around that limitation using css and creating your own indent styles.  css have a marginLeft property you can use.
