A few questions to get me started on Photos

1) I have folders under "pictures" on the Mac root folder. They are called: 2014; 2014 New York; 2014 Birthday; 2014 Katy Perry; etc. I would like to import each of these as an album bearing the same name. Is there a way to do that automatically? I have over 500 albums spanning 4 decades
2) Once imported I want to organize all the albums of one year (e.g. the ones I mentioned above) under one folder named after the year (e.g. 2014). Is that something I can do on folders or should I do it on smart albums?
3) I want to categorize my albums by "parties", "trips", "concerts", etc. So I would like to have "2014 Katy Perry" along with "2013 Lady Gaga" and "2010 ACDC" in one location called "concerts", but I would still like to have them in their own albums, as opposed to all the photos loose in the folder. How do I do that?
4) Face recognition. It doesn't seem to be working right. I have been prompted the same face in photos taken within minutes of each other and it still requires me to assign a name to each photo. It is obviously not recognizing the faces. How do I solve this? On the same topic, can I select several photos at the same time and drag them to one of the face circles above the screen?
5) I don't want to upload my photos to the cloud, I want to have them on my Mac. But I would like to use all the photos me and my wife take on our iphones and ipads to be synced via the cloud so I can download them to my hard drive, and organize them by folders and albums just like my previous photos. So my questions are: a) can I decide where in my Mac do these photos get stored? b) can I then delete them from the cloud? c) will they be stored only in the location I decide, or will copies be kept elsewhere in my Mac?
6) How can make my photos work as screen saver on my apple TV? Can I choose which ones? How?

  • Few question to get going w adobe stuff...

Ok I have a few questions, maybe you can help me...
    A) ORGANIZER RELATED QUESTIONS:
    1) How/where do I back up photo/videos/settings from adobe organizer?
1b) If I decide to upgrade from pse9 to ps cs5 is it real simple to 'import.transfer' organizer to the big dog ps cs5?
1c) Same thing (but for videos) if decide to upgrade to premiere pro from premiere elements 9 is it easy to import organizer?
    2) Organizer - are there physical copies of my photos/videos in some other adobe organizer folder
or are they just linked to similar to windows 7 and libraries?
    B) Photoshop & Premiere Elements 9 vs Photoshop cS5 & Premiere Pro
    1) Does After Effects work with premiere elements 9?
1b) Recommend some good starter plug in collections for video editing.?
    2) If I decide to upgrade/buy photoshop cs5, do all of my plug ins I've got installed with elements 8 as host get automatically transferred to ps cs5? Or do I have to manually reinstall all over?
    3) How much simpler is photoshop elements to learn than ps cs5 and premiere pro?
Is the learning curve about the same just more of it to learn (and additional function of course)
Thanks everybody - have a ton more questions, but gonna lay low and watch some tutorials for about a YEAR first....
    One last thing...
I love this site, but variety is the spice of life. Can you guys recommend some other Adobe ps/premeire learing sites and help/discussion forums that would be valuable

A.1) Click File >>Back Up catalog to CD DVD or Hard Drive.
1b) You can convert a PSE catalog in CS5 but works best with photos only. Project files like slideshows and videos might cause the conversion to stall.
1c) Premier Pro has it’s own media browser.
2)There are no physical copies. The Organizer only makes links to the folders on your computer.
B.1)AE is fully integrated in CS5.5 Production Premium but I’m not sure if it works on a stand alone basis, although I don’t see why not.
1b) Sorry don’t know any plug-ins to recommend but 32 bit plug-in's will not work with AE.
    2) You would need to move plug-ins manually.
    3) Just more of it. In PS CS5 you get great things like the pen/paths tool and tone curves. With Premier pro you ideally need a fast 64 bit system with high end GPU to take full advantage of the mercury Playback Engine.
Try adobe TV for all sorts of video tutorials for the various products.
    Good luck.

  • Few Questions Before Getting Leopard

I want to install leopard but i have a few questions:
    1. If i install it will it overwrite everything on my mac like documents, movies, pictures etc.
    2. What will happen to my bookmarks, cookies etc.
    3. Do i have to reinstall all my apps?

Hello! The biggest factor in an upgrade is making SURE BEFOREHAND that all your system tweaks and apps are Leopard ready. Most of the disaster stories are from those who blindly upgraded without checking their apps and haxies. The pref pane "Application Enhancer" usually resulted in an inoperable system so check it out for sure because many folks have forgotten that they installed it years ago. Tom

  • A few tips to get me started ..

    Hi there
I've been away from JAVA a few years, and I think it is time to get started again. I know the JAVA basics, and I made a Java applet chess game once. I am planning to start a new project: a slot machine game. I was thinking about a scenario where I have the game running on a webserver. Clients should then be able to log in, bet money and play . I have never written any client/server code in JAVA before, and I was just wondering if any of you have some good tips before I get started.
I was hoping that it could evolve to a commercial project in the long run, and I therefor have to consider money safety issues. Any good tips here? Also I am very interested in making the game as compatible as possible - do you know any good articles about making your program work with older browsers and older versions of JAVA?
In all my previous projects I've used the Model, View controller design pattern. Is this also the way to go with this project you think.
How would you approach this project, start with the game engine, or getting the client/server thing right first?
I know this was a lot, but I hope some of you have some good tips, before I just jump right into it. Links to articles etc. would be nice.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Few questions about getting rid of unwanted items

OK, i should have done this from the start but I didn't do a fresh install of my OS to get rid of language support, etc....now I am into using my blackbook and have all my camino and safari bookmarks, etc the way I like it.....is there a way to save these preferences on an external HD and do a clean install of OS? If this is possible it is the method I prefer.
    OR
Should I just remove what I don't want manually instead? does monolingual work with intel macbooks? do I just trash printer prefs into the trash? How do I make sure my officetrial also gets rid of the 'files' hanging around? (i read a post where someone trahsed MS office and still had files haning around)...
Basically if I stay away from my 'users/library' folder I will be safe? I can trash applications that don't want and be safe?
    thanks all

    Here is what about monolingual:
Monolingual is a program that can remove other languages that installed by default by OS X installer that you don't want or use. It also offer to trim down the Input Menu and Architecture.
    http://monolingual.sourceforge.net/
    Here is the tips:
    1. Since you only run this once, you can run it directly from virtual drive that mounted after you download the .dmg file by simply double click on its icon.
    2. Uncheck the language you want to keep, for I uncheck English, British English and US English to keep.
    3. Never play with the input menu for it is not worth of the space you save comparing to the risk you will lost control to your keyboard and have to re-install OS X from the scratch.
    4. Never remove and play with architecture option as well for the space is also not worth, and you might lose rosetta ability to run non universal programs.
    Good Luck.

  • A few questions about getting DSL

Hi, my home has been out of range for DSL and we've been patiently waiting for years for the day to come when it's available, but it doesnt look like it'll be happening soon. We have a small business we run out of the house and have been paying a fortune a month for those mobile cellular internet cards (a little faster than dial-up) and figured we'd save money eventually if we could just pay verizon engineers to run another base station or repeater to extend the line to reach us.
My question is would this even be possible, and if so how much do you think it would cost, just an estimate, our neighbors about a mile away (through the power lines) have it. We've pretty much exhausted all other options and need high speed for our growing business.
    Thanks

Many years ago, engineers finally got the attention of top management.  3G cell phone now do more than copper land lines.  That created enough panic among bean counters to finally let them install FIOS.  Copper is now dying.  Anything in copper that might become available is only because it always existed.  Your only upgrade is now FIOS.
Meanwhile, competition also exists.  For example, internet via Direct TV.  Also coming is Wi-Max.  Intel has been at this for about ten years.  So it should be coming soon.  Wi-Max is WiFi but in a wider radius.  Whereas WiFi may be 300 feet; Wi-Max is in the entire mobile phone cell.
Typical reason for no DSL is a wire that is too long.  However some better radio transceivers (DSL is radio wave communication) have made a minor increase in DSL's range.  Have you checked the availability of that new option?

  • A few questions with getting my iPod replaced.

I have an 80 GB iPod classic that was bought for me last December at Target. Last night, it froze, so I rebooted it. When it rebooted, instead of going into the regular menu, it gave me an x inside of a circle with www.apple.com/support/ipod. I went into the diagnostics mode and checked everything. When I went to check the hard drive, it couldn't be opened. I would like to know if I can get a replacement even though they do not sell my iPod model anymore, and if they can tell the iPod is less than a year old without the original receipt. Also, will they charge me a fee for upgrading to a larger iPod? If so, how much?

Go here: http://www.apple.com/support/oss/ to enter your serial number and see what your service options are. If you are under warranty they will probably replace it with a refurbished iPod of the same generation.
There is no "upgrade" of ipods. They will charge you whatever the retail cost is of the model you want to buy.

  • Have a few questions about iPad before I get one

I have a few questions about getting an ipad before I committ to get one.
I have about 24 gb of itunes purchases in my itunes library, I am thinking of getting the 64 gb ipad. However, after you purchase the 64 gb, it will not truly be 64 gb,
    1) how much actual storage space would I have on a 64 gb ipad accounting for the os? On my macbook now I have a 164 gb hard drive but only access to about 148 gb for example.
    2) Would I be able to store the 24 gb of itunes purchases in icloud? How would I do that? Would I keep needing to go into the Purchase History tab in the ITunes store and download the song when I want to listen to it? My concern with this is that the item will no longer be "available in the Itunes store" and I will lose access to my music I purchased?
I would like to ditch the laptop and just have the ipad as my computer but want to know about these questions I have first.
    3) Can ipad and iphone now be charged without needing a laptop? Per last year's June 2011 conference when Lion and ICloud were announced, it was stated in Fall 2011 with iOS5 that people could get ipads and iphones and charge them without needing a laptop for syncing?

    1. About 57 on mine
    2. Subscribe to iTunes Match at a cost of about $25 per year - 25000 song limit I think
    http://www.apple.com/icloud/features/
    3. The iPad comes with a power adapter that plugs into a wall socket and that is the recommended way to charge it anyway. - not by using a computer
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/ipad.html
You do not absolutely need a computer in order to use an iPad but you have to do more research to figure out if it will fit your needs that way.

  • A few questions about the Apple TV

Hi guys. I'm planning on getting an Apple TV but have a few questions. Before I start asking, I gotta mention that my internet connection is limited to 25GB.
    1) I'll be using my Apple TV to stream music and movies off my PC running iTunes. Both will be on the same wifi network. Will it use my data to stream?
    2) will it use my data when I'm using AirPlay to mirror my iPad to my Apple TV?
    3) I have all my music in the cloud. If I'm playing music off the cloud and not streaming from my PC, it will use my data right? But does it save my music on its internal storage so I can listen to them later? Without internet? Or does it download songs every time I play them?
    4) Does my photo stream get saved on its internal storage?
    5) I'll have it hooked up to a 1080p tv. When watching YouTube on it, can I set the YouTube videos to play in 360p? Or 480p? Even though my tv is 1080p?
Pretty long, I know. Thanks :)

Thanks a lot for the help. So I can stream movies and music from my PC to my Apple TV without using data correct? And airplay mirroring doesn't use wifi either? Brilliant.
So whenever I turn on my Apple TV, it re downloads my photo stream? Every single time?
So it doesn't play YouTube videos at 360p. Alright. What if I'm playing a 360p YouTube video on my iphone and then mirror it to my Apple TV? Does it automatically load a 1080p version of that video or does it just play the 360p video?

  • Thinking of getting an iPad but have a few questions

After using the iPhone 4 (3GS previously) and really liking the OS on it, I am thinking of purchasing an iPad to make reading ebooks easier, also, having the iPad would be more convenient for me to quickly go on the net in my home (or other wifi area, but mostly home use) to seek information and also check, send emails, rather than having to switch the computer on all the time and then having to wait for it to load up and also with the iPad, the larger screen would make email, internet use and ebook use more pleasurable due to the iPad's larger screen when compared to using my iPhone.
I have a few questions that I would like to ask to iPad users, who could perhaps answer them for me?
In my household we have 2 iTunes libraries, one for my iPhone and one for my girlfriend's iPod. I created a separate iTunes library for each of the devices so that each one would have a totally separate library and therefore the possibility of having one overwriting the others library would be impossible.
Now ideally I would be wanting to create a separate iTunes library for the iPad, but I would want to add the music and apps, email accounts, bookmarks that I have on my iPhone and add them onto my iPad. Would this possible?
Also. I believe some apps have specific versions for either iPhone or iPad, so would the iPhone versions of the apps run on the iPad, or would I need to download the iPad versions of those particular apps?
Also. I have a number of DVD's that I have converted and then dragged and dropped the video off of them into iTunes. If I am correct, would I need to reconvert those videos/DVD's again, as the video size (screen size) would be for the iPhone and therefore a smaller screen, which would not look very good on the iPad's much larger screen. If this is the case, can anyone recommend a good video converter for converting video for the iPad and what settings need to be used for the iPad?
I also would be wanting to have a number of photos on the iPad. To get them onto the iPad, is it just a simply matter of selecting the pictures I have on my computer that I want added to my iPad, and then just dragging and dropping them into iTunes, then connecting and syncing the iPad to get them added on to the iPad, or is there an easier method?
    Thanks in advance

Funny you should mention Macs, but I'm thinking of my next computer been an iMac, and using the Parallel Desktop software so that I can have functionality of been able to switch to Windows when needed to run the programs that are not Mac compatibly. I'm swaying towards Mac has I have heard their OS is more reliable and secure compared to Windows, and the need to have anti virus and anti spyware programs on a Mac is not really needed, but I figure if I can run Windows on a Mac then I have the best of both worlds, anyhow back on to topic
I do indeed take backups of the various libraries and related data for them.
I have used the Dropbox app and was impressed, but I did prefer an app called iFiles which allows me to carry various files/files types around with me on my iPhone, such as PDF files, Word doc files etc.
The reason I use the method of having a separate iTunes library for each device we use on the computer, (my iPhone, girlfriend's iPod, and soon maybe an iPad) is because I accidentally replaced the music I had on an iPod I had at the time with my girlfriend's music. So from then on, that's why I have created a separate library for each Apple device, and so far I have never accidentally messed up another devices contents.
Thanks for the help its much appreciated.

  • Newbie requires a few pointers to get started

Just starting out on the Mac and the development off (I've chosen Cocoa and got a book 'Learning Cocoa with Objective-C), and I'm trying to get my head around where to start.
I'm not new to development, I'm currently a Java developer amongst other, and just need a few pointers to get me going in the correct direction.
I'll use a crossword program as an example.
In Java I'd probable create a JPanel with a JLabel or two to represent a cell/square and put x amount of these on another JPanel to create a crossword grid. - So what is the equivalent of this ? I thought it might be something to do with Custom Views that I've read about to create the cells. Poisitoning them in a square grid would seem to be a lot easier, just placing them where I want them.
Now how to reference the cells, again in Java I could, for example, store the grid of objects in an array or collection of some sort, so I could iterate through them. Can this be done ? Is it recommended ?
Are there any good online resources, that anyone can recommend ?
    Thanks

One thing that Cocoa has, and Java does not, is a GUI builder - Interface Builder. In Cocoa, you don't have to create user interface objects programatically. You create them in Interface Builder, give them meaningful names, and then implement the logic in Xcode.
I'm sure there are ways to write Cocoa without using Interface Builder, but I wouldn't consider it fun. When developing GUI software, I find it is always better to do things the way the vendor (Apple, in this case) wants you do. For Cocoa, that is Interface Builder.
As far as the actual classes one would use, I'm not sure. There are many different ways to do it. The nice thing about it is that you can develop nice GUI programs without having to develop an intimate knowedge of all of the UI classes. Just draw them, connect them, and the default behavior is almost always what you want.

  • Getting new MBP a few questions please

hi guys, new to the forum and soon hopefully new to Mac, looking at getting a Macbook pro 15" 2.4 (the new one)with 4 gig of ram. and I have just a few questions.
I'm hoping you guys can help me with.I'm a pro press photographer but unfortunately our company's required software is PC based so any of you that have used Vm fusion is it going to be fast enough to use on a daily basis with this models of MBP.It's the only thing i would have to run in VM. Any thoughts.
Second is it worth the extra cash to upgrade the hard drive to a 7200prm version , will it make much difference with CS3 and the like or will battery life take two bigger hit. (I cant see my self doing much video or motion)
I have already decided that the 2.5 is not worth the price difference for what i do, but any ones thoughts on that are most welcome.
great forums, cant wait to join the club look forward to all your thoughts.
    cheers Cameron

I was in the same decision conundrum until last night. After a lengthy chat with the folks at the local Level 2 service center, we agreed that:
    # Extra RAM is best purchased separately for the reasons explained elsewhere in this thread.
    # AppleCare is a must on a portable, but is best purchased later, in about 10-11 months.
    # The 7,200 RPM HD does make a substantial difference, especially for CS3.
    # The 2.4 to 2.5 CPU difference is not in the speed but in the L2 cache, which can make a difference with well-written apps that exploit this feature. Hence, a toss-up. Remember that's one thing you can't upgrade.
    # The 2.5 to 2.6 CPU difference is a $300 ripoff. 100 extra MHz are really not worth that!
    # iWorks costs the same preinstalled or purchased separately, except you won't have to spend time installing it. Does your company have a corporate license for Office?
    # I find that the reflections off the glossy screen really tire my eyes. YMMV...
    # Parallels Desktop is considered more usable than VMWare Fusion by most users. BootCamp is too cumbersome since you have to be rebooting all the time. This is, BTW, a good reason to have 4GB RAM...
    # Lastly, my portables last me 4-5 years, so I prefer to invest in something that can stay the course that long.
So, there you have it. I ordered mine last night...

  • A few questions before I buy a new iMac/Mac mini and sign up for Creative Cloud.

    Hello Everyone,
I am looking to purchase a new Apple computer and sign up for Creative Cloud within the next week and I have a few questions that should be answered before I proceed.
My wife and I own a business and we will be using the CS6 apps to create brochures, Constant Contact mailings, product package inserts, edit product photography for print and web use, and short HD how-to videos. We are not graphics professionals or power users and wont be doing anything too complicated.
Any help and answers will be greatly appreciated.
I will start with the hardware questions first:
I am trying to decide between the iMac and the Mac mini.
The iMac is a 2.7Ghz Quad-core Intel core i5 and comes with 4GB of memory that is expandable to 16GB, which I will do for sure. It comes with a Radeon HD 6770M graphics card with 512MB of GDDR5 memory(not upgradable), and a 1TB HDD that runs at 7200RPM. This unit meets the specs required.
The 2.5Ghz Mac Mini comes with 4GB of memory that is expandable to 8GB, I will also do this. It has a Radeon HD 6630M graphics card with 256MB of GDDR5 memory(not upgradable), and a 500GB HDD that runs at 5400RPM. This unit meets all the spec(I think) except for the speed of the HDD.
Question: Will the mini run the software without too much of an issue considering the speed of the HDD?
Question: Will the iMac run the software significantly better to justify the price difference?
I already have 1 mini(purchased 4 months ago, with the same specs listed above) and will be purchasing a second computer for my wifes desk. If the mini will run CS6 fine, that is great and we can save a few bucks. If my mini will not run CS6 well, I will get the iMac for her desk as she will be doing the bulk of the work in that regard anyway.
Now a couple of software questions.
After reading hundreds of reviews and forum posts over the last few days I have seen many people having this or that issue. It seems to me that most of the issues are because of upgrades from Lion to Mountian Lion after installing CS6 first or trying to open CS3,4,5 files in CS6.
If you want to know what issues have me concerned take a look at just this one forum:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2012/07/adobe-cs-apps-mountain-lion-no-known-issues.html
Similar issues are discussed in the Apple forums as well as many other places around the web.
I am not a computer professional but I know enough to maintain my systems and keep them running smoothly.
We do not have any Adobe software installed on my mini and will not be opening any files from previous versions of Adobe product in the new CS6 software. These will be a clean installs on pristine systems running fully updated Mountian Lion OS's on both machines and creating new files from scratch.
Question: Should I be expecting any issues like the ones I have read in the forums and blogs or are these just the normal things that happen when upgrading to new software with multiple hardware configurations?
My feeling is that we will not be having too much of a problem due to the clean installs and no files from previous versions.
Next up, the Creative Cloud(CC) FAQ states that you can install on 2 machines but can't open stuff at the same time.
Question: Does this mean we can't be using any CS6 apps at the same time or just not using the same app at the same time?
Example: PS and PS on both machines at same time = No, PS on one and Dreamweaver on the other at the same time=Yes?
The CC FAQ page says Adobe will add Lightroom 4 later in 2012 while the main CC page lists it as available now.
    Question: Which is true?
My mini is registered to me, with my name, iTunes account, Apple ID etc.
Question: Do I need to do the initial set-up of the new machine with all my information to ensure the CS6 suite works on both machines? Do the computers need to be registered(as far as Apple configuration is concerned) to same person for them to work on one CC account or can I install CS6 on any 2 machines regardless of how they were initially set-up?
This may seem like a silly question but I want to avoid any problems before they happen.
Well, those are all of my questions at the moment. To anyone who made it this far in my looooong post, Thank You so much for your time. I appreciate your expertise and knowledge and hope that you can help me make this decision.
    Cheers,
    Alex Bogdan

    Alex,
I'll try and answer your questions as best I can.
    Qn 1 Which Mac.
Ans:- As I understand it both units will run Adobe CS6.
Which one really depends on what you wand from CS6. If you are looking for high end demand and performance, then I would go for the IMac
Your Specs for the Imac are right. However if you buy your IMac straight from Apple there are even higher specs.
              You can get:-
3.4 GHz i7 processor rather than the i5
2GB video card as opposed to a 1Gb video card.
Of course such a model will cost you more.
In the end it is needs compared with money to spend. That is only a decision you cam make.
Q2:- Will the higher cost for the Imac justify copst.
Ans:- Again it depends on what demands you intend to make on the hardware and software.
But I note you have a business and if that businees expects to high demand and high speedy performance then I suspect the Imac would be more able to provide your needs.
Again only you will know the answer to that.
    Q3:- Questions about CS6 reliability
Ans:- I have been with Adobe for way over 10 years.
Speaking, only for myself, it is the most reliable software on the market.
It is true that if you look down this form, like any other and I am thinking about the Apple discussions forum, you will find numerous instances of problems.
Again this is only my opinion, but although all these problems are real for the individuals:-
First it is not clear why they have the problem e.g. what have they done or not done.
Second, they are in the minority of the total users using the hardware / software.
The only problem I am aware of with CS6 is Acrobat X. I understand it has been sorted Adobe, however it cost me so much work I have removed it from my system and reverted to Acrobat 9
So what I am saying is that there are only two comapnies I rely 100% on: They are Adobe and Apple.
So if you are happy with my opinion I would not worry about Adobe CS6
    Qn 4:- CS6 0n 2 machines.
Ans:- Yes you will not be able to run the same program similtaneosly.
I believe, if it is important that you do run the same program together, that you can acquire a further licience from Adobe to do that.
You would need to contact Adobe about that.
    Qn 5:- Lightroom 4
Ans:- Lightroom is now available as part of Creative Cloud.
Qn 6:- Set up for individual machines
Ans:- I do not believe you do. Once you have set up your Creative Cloud account you go to the apps site and download the apps for each machine.
Each machine downloads the apps and your machine and the apps are registered by Adobe.
Here is something that you may want to know:-
Because I was so unhappy loosing all the Acrobat data with Acrobat X I ended up deleting Acrobat X
However as far as Creative Cloud is concered Acrobat X is still on my machine.
It is not a problem for me because I am happy with Acrobat 9, it fullfils my needs and has not crashed and lost me all my bookmarks.
              However here is the point:-
Adobe, when there was a problem with Acrobat X requested that no-one deletes the application.
Though I do not know for certain I believe registration of the apps you have with Creative Cloud are registered with Creative Cloud in their database. Therefore were you to delete an app, it will still be registered with Creative Cloud and you will not be able to download a further copy even though the app is no longer on your    machine.
Therefore it maybe not a good idea to delete an app when you no longer have a use for it. If you want it back I suspect you will have to contact Adobe Support
    Personal Comment:-
It is true many unfortunately have had all sorts of problems, including me with Acrobat X.
That said, Creative Cloud in my view has been a major advance in how Adobe delivers software. I have no regrets with signing up to Creative Cloud and I expect to remain with it.
Hope all of that goes some way to answering your questions.

  • New to IPhone and have a few Questions?

To start I want to say that I am a long time (25+ years) veteran of technology but am new the the IPhone. My IPhone is not Jailbroken and would like to keep it that way if I can. Allthgouh I did jailbrake it with blackra1n for about 30mins then I did a factory reload and let it be as it started acting stupid once I started installing apps from unofficial sources.;) Im a x86 nerd and NOT a MAC guy. I haven't sat down at a MAC/Apple in about 15/20 years.
I just got my first IPhone 3Gs/16GB. (Coming from a BlackBerry Curve 8310) the other day and although it is taking some time getting used to, I think I will like it more then I do once I get used to it.
Anyhow I have a few questions to start off with. I did some googleing already but just want to make sure I understand a few things.
All though I did the BlackRa1n jail break thing and installed a few apps then it locked up and failed to turn on or something so I did the whole reload from itunes and now its all good. Anyhow.....
1.) It appears as if one can not run a program from the home sreen and have it run in the background while doing other things? Take the many SIP Clients I have played with in the last 48 hours. Once I open the SIP Client and connect if I hit the physical button below the screen the program closes, thus the sip client no longer works. Pretty much most if not all apps iv installed from the App Store act like this. Is this the case? Does the IPhone not mutitask at all or verywell?
2.) Are there any SIP Clients that work over 3G? All the ones iv tried say they are for WIFI only. The SIP Clients work fine when on WIFI. It sounds like this is Apples way of controlling/monopolizing the voice/data/voip aspect of the platform/device. Im sure they would lose a lot of money if everyone did what I am trying to do.Just my opinion.
3.) Maybe I play with it to much but **** the battery dies fast. Is there anyway to optimize the battery at all other then for me not to use it as much?
4.) How can I remote lock it if I lose it or it gets stolen? I read somewhere this could be done.
5.) Are there any other Shells/HomeScreens/Themes that can replace the standard 4x4x4 row icons?
6.) The speaker phone (when on a call) seems kinda low even when turned all the way up. Is there any way to make it louder?
7.) I am using the built in VPN client to connect to my works PPTP Windows 2003 VPN server but the client randomly disconnects through out the day. Is there any way to have some type of keep alive set or are there any other VPN Clients that I can use?
Sorry for all this just thought I would ask for feedback.
Many thanks for any help anyone can provide,

The iPhone SDK does not permit ANY 3rd party apps from running in the background or multitasking. It does provide for push notifications which can simulate certain background activity in terms of receiving external notifications while the app is actually closed. This works reasonably well with IM apps, news, sports, weather, travel updates and some peer-to-peer games.

Just how would the SIP server connect to the cell carrier 3G network? Do you know of ANY that do??

3G voice and data connections are culprits. Avoid email push and frequent fetching. See this Apple article for detailed suggestions.

MobileMe Find My iPhone will locate, set a passcode lock and optionally wipe all data from your iPhone. You have to be a MobileMe subscriber.
5.) Are there any other Shells/HomeScreens/Themes that can replace the standard 4x4x4 row icons?
No. Apple does not permit this.
6.) The speaker phone (when on a call) seems kinda low even when turned all the way up. Is there any way to make it louder?
You can troubleshoot your iPhone as described in the User Guide - restart, reset, reset settings, restore. Or, get hearing aids
