A few sporadic questions about iPhone 3g

Hi
I've just purchased the new iPhone in the UK and am very happy with it. I just have a few questions.
1. I want to set-up emails on the device using my POP3 account. If I do this, will it prevent my emails downloading onto my main computer when I log on to that?
2. I don't want the thing to get scratched or dusty when it's in my pocket. What's the best protective case out there?
3. I'm going on holiday to Mexico shortly (from the UK, so it's an O2 mobile). Will it still connect to the internet over there?
4. How can I change the ringtone to a song from my iPod?
Thanks!

There is an advanced setup option where you specify when to remove mail from the server. Set this to "never" and the mail will remain on the server until you download it to your main computer.
2. I don't want the thing to get scratched or dusty when it's in my pocket. What's the best protective case out there?
I use leather slipcase and remove it from the case to use it. This has worked for over a year; my phone looks as good as new.
3. I'm going on holiday to Mexico shortly (from the UK, so it's an O2 mobile). Will it still connect to the internet over there?
You will need to enable international roaming on your account with O2. Also, be very careful; their data roaming rate is something like 7 pounds/MB.
4. How can I change the ringtone to a song from my iPod?
You cannot use tracks directly, however you can create ringtone tracks and install them on the phone. The "official" way is to create the ringtone using iTunes on your computer. You will pay for the privilege, however. You can also create ringtones using Garageband on a Mac. You can use Audacity on Windows, also, but that is a little trickier. Use Google to learn how. There are also 3rd party paid applications that will create ringtones.

  • Few basic questions about database administration

    Hello,
I have a few basic questions about database administration.
    1. I switched one of my oracle instances to archivelog mode. I just cannot locate the archive log files on my windows system. The %ora_home%/ora92/database/archive directory is desperately empty...
2.What is the tools01.dbf datafile used for?
3.What is the undotbso1.dbf datafile used for?
    Thanks in advance,
    Julien.

    1. The archive log location needs to be specified in your init.ora file. By default, Oracle will place the archive files in either ORACLE_HOME/dbs or ORACLE_HOME/database.
    2. The tools01.dbf file belongs to the tools tablespace which should be set as the default tablespace for system. It primary purpose is to hold Oracle Forms and Reports database objects, however, it should also be used for holding other non sys database objects such as the perfstat (statspack) or other third party database schemas e.g. quests sqllab.
    3. undotbs01.dbf file belongs to the undo tablespace.

  • Questions about iPhone backup?

I am iPhone novice,so i have some questions about iPhone Transfer included iTunes.
    1. Only back up iPhone files via iTunes?
    2. iTunes just can back up address list and calendar?
    3. i want to back up plug-in,patch,application program, game ect, how to operate iPhone backup?Anyone can tell me simple&professional tutorial about iPhone?Or introduce a good iPhone Transfer like or better than iTunes.
Appreciate your detailed answers! Thanks in advance.

iTunes is required to transfer iTunes content from your iTunes library on your computer - music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, 3rd party apps, and selected photos from your computer to your iPhone. iTunes also serves as the sync conduit for contacts and calendar events between your iPhone and the supported address book and calendar application on your computer.
iTunes creates and maintains a backup for your iPhone which is updated by iTunes as the first step during the iTunes sync process. The backup does not include all data on your iPhone. The backup does not include any iTunes content - music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, or 3rd party apps. All iTunes content on your iPhone should remain in your iTunes library on your computer and the backup doesn't include any photos transferred from your computer. All photos transferred from your computer should remain on your computer as well.
This link provides the data that is included with your iPhone's backup.

  • Few questions about iPhone 4S

    Hi,
Recently I got an iPhone 4S, it is my first new phone in a long time, before this I had an old nokia, so I just have a few questions about it.
I havve read a alot of horror stories about the 4S battery life, mine seems ok, here is what I would like to know
    1) How long should a healthy battery last?
    2) how long should it take to charge to 100% from 1 or 2%?
On my daily commute I use listen it to music and sometimes user twiiter/facebook. I also get alerted of emails when they come in. So far it has just about lasted just about two days maybe before I had to recharge. Is this about right? As stated above I am coming from an old nokia, which is very dated now but the battery lasted almost a week before I had to charge, so having to charge my phone this often is new to me. My iPhone is really great and I just don't want any problems. I have turned off all extras that I don't need.
BTW are the iPhone 4S battery issues a software or hardware issue?
    Thanks

I attempted to read your post, but in amongst all the random, unrelated waffling, I couldn't actually find exactly what your iPhone related question for this "Using iPhone" forum was.
Would you like to clarify? Concisely.

  • A few quick questions about publishing for iPhone/Android

I'm currently developing an iPhone/Android game in CS5 and I just have a few quick questions.  If anyone can answer even one or two I'd really appreciate it
1- I'm developing using a 320 x 480 resolution for the iphone.  When I tested it, the status bar on the top of the screen makes the edges disappear.  How should I turn off the status bar?  And if I can't what resolution should I use?
2- The performance is a little slow, and the game isn't very intense at all.  What's a good way to improve performance?
3- For Android, what should I do for the resolution?  Is there a standard resolution or do I have to have multiple resolutions for multiple devices?
4- Finally, is it worth getting the free trial of CS5.5 before I publish?  Is there anything in there that will be a huge improvement over CS5?
    All help is appreciated

    1. Publish in fullscreen
    2. Use bitmaps, cache all bitmaps, use minimized looping structure etc.
        http://www.yeahbutisitflash.com/?p=986
    3. Android: 480 * 800
    4. Not that much, but you have GUI updates and have a GUI publishing screen for packager for iphone too.

  • Few common questions about Mobile Forms

    Hello, everyone!
I have a few questions about mobile forms:
Can a form be integrated with a portal, which is build NOT on Adobe CQ\AEM technology?
I've created a form and loaded it to the server repository via Form Manager. Now I can access it in my browser like this:
    http://testlcserver:8080/lc/content/xfaforms/profiles/hrform.html?contentRoot=repository%3 A%2F%2F%2FApplications%2FTest%2F1.0&template=UberForm.xdp&dataRef=
And the question is: what is the right way to share forms to users on a production environment (without integration in a portal pages on so on, let it be just a link to a form which users have to fill in)?  I mean, should it be the same link, or it is only for developers need and to share forms to users some other way must be used?

For integrating on custom portal, you would need to integrate with form submit proxy for handling of submission as mentioned @ http://helpx.adobe.com/livecycle/help/mobile-forms/mobile-forms-service-proxy.html.
As far as url of form is concerned, it’s really up you. You can choose to hide the request parameters as couple of other customers are doing. You can find more information about hiding form template and content root from request parameter @ http://blogs.adobe.com/foxes/hide-parameters-from-mobile-form-url/

  • Another question about iPhones and malware/virus

Thought I would post this as a separate question.
iPhone 4s. legit (not jail broke)
I know the iOS is pretty protected against virus and malware.  And that you cannot download things onto the phone other than through the app store
But what about what they call drive by downloads? Where you go to a web page and it automatically installs something without asking?

    UACount wrote:
thanks all. This is so freaky to me. If the iOS is so safe, why doesnt every PC use it?  And I dont mean that sarcastically
It's very safe but it also puts very severe limits on what the user can do to tweak the OS and on things that applications can do. For example, most people would balk at only being able to by applications for their computer from one approved source. In fact, a lot of people don't like that about iPhones. Some people prefer freedom to modify their device to security.
In fact, the Mac OS, which historically been less prone to viruses is adopting some of the feature of iOS.

  • A Few Basic Questions About Random Shut Downs (RSD)

i think my month and a half old macbook has "RSD", its a white 13 inch which i bought refurbrished, Iv got a few questions about RSD and apple serice
First, is there any way to avaoid rsd or is it soemthing you really have no influence over?
secondly, if i send it in to get serviced, how long might it take (it has to ship from new england if that means anything)?
has anyone got theres serviced recently and still had problems?
Also will the RSD get worse, should i send it in sooner rather than later (right now i can deal with it, though if it does get worse itd be a pain)
and last should i expect to lose everything on the harddrive ifg i send it in?

First, is there any way to avaoid rsd or is it
soemthing you really have no influence over?
You can't avoid it. You can temporarily reduce it by:
    1. Holding down the power button at startup until it beeps.
    2. Setting your energy saver settings so it doesn't sleep.
But over time, even those strategies will fail to help.
secondly, if i send it in to get serviced, how long
might it take (it has to ship from new england if
    that means anything)?
I took mine to the Apple Store last Wednesday and it was overnighted to the repair center. It was delivered back to me the this Wednesday. So it took one week in my case. I know there are folks that sent theirs in before I did that had to wait longer, but I think that's because there was a parts shortage.
has anyone got theres serviced recently and still had
    problems?
The first time I sent mine in it worked fine for three weeks and then the RSD returned, but that was because Apple really didn't know at the time what the problem was. By the time I sent it in the second time, they had just concluded that a heatsink replacement would fix the problem. Hopefully they were right - only time will tell, since the issue generally seems to take a few weeks or more to occur.
Also will the RSD get worse, should i send it in
sooner rather than later (right now i can deal with
it, though if it does get worse itd be a pain)
It will get worse over time. If it only happens rarely, they might not be able to replicate the problem if you take it in for service right away. (The first time I took it to the Apple Store they couldn't get it to shut down. By the time I took it in the second time, it was predictable enough that I knew it would shut done right after they turned it on - then they sent it in for service.) If it happens fairly regularly (like every time you start it after its been sitting for awhile, or any time you wake it from sleep), then definitely take it in. Supposedly they really do know how to fix it now.
and last should i expect to lose everything on the
harddrive ifg i send it in?
Both times that I got mine back all of my data was intact. However, it is always good practice to do a full backup before you send it in -- just in case.

  • A few question about iPhone OS in CS5 and CS5 in general.

    Hi,
I'm an IT trainer and I am trying to introduce my students to programming for iPhone/iPod Touch. (They are Secondary 2 students. 14 years old) The school is using a windows computer and CS5 right now is the best for the class (Not a steep learning curve and a user-friendly program). I know about the problems over the iPhone OS in CS5 with Apple but I was told it is still available for use. Furthermore, we have no intention of bringing the apps created to the Apple Store. I've tried the trial version and before I make any purchase, I would actually like to ask a few questions.
Is the iPhone OS in the trial version itself complete? Is there anything left out from the trial version because when I tried it, it seems fine however I did not try publishing to an iPhone due to the certificates. Is there a reason for the certificate? Is there any way around it because if there isn't do I need to get a certificate for every single student? (I'm looking at a class of 40 students.) Is the certificate available for windows platform?
Lets say, I got myself a certificate, create a simple program and then publish it, can I immediately bring it over to iTunes and then sync? Will it work that way? I don't want it to be too tedious for the students to see the end result. I've done quite a few research and have come across people having problems bringing it into their devices. Those people mention about bringing it to Cydia and needing to jailbreak the device. The devices made available for the students are not jailbroken. Will iPhone OS with proper certification still need Cydia for use with their device? Will only jailbroken device allow a CS5 app? I hope you get what I'm trying to say. We as trainers do not support teaching students to jailbreak, so that's definitely a no-no.
Another thing about CS5. Previously I have called customer support about the CS4 the school is using now and the problem with nested animation when publishing the animation as a video file, is this problem still in CS5? Does CS5 allow nested animation to be published as a video file? If it isn't, is there any way around it?
Thank you for your time and patience in answering my questions.
    Regards,
    Shafuraa

    Dear Marco,
Thanks for th links, its quite handy. One more help required from you as its related to Idsktune. I was just reruning the idsktune on Soalris 10 box where zfs file system used, and able to see the below warning
WARNING: largefiles option is not present on mount of /, files may be limited to 2GB in size.
Could you tell me this alert specific to zfs file system, I was searching the mount parameter options specific to file size, but not able to get anything. Below are the system parameters.
    bash-3.00$ ulimit -a
core file size (blocks, -c) unlimited
data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited
    file size (blocks, -f) unlimited
    open files (-n) 256
    pipe size (512 bytes, -p) 10
    stack size (kbytes, -s) 8192
    cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited
    max user processes (-u) 29995
    virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited
In UFS file system I have noted, for such largefile option we are adding the "largefile" parameter in mount, below is such an example.
    /var/crash on /dev/md/dsk/d40 read/write/setuid/devices/intr/largefiles/logging/xattr/onerror=panic/dev=1540028 on Thu Aug 19 14:54:11 2010
Could you guide me on this file size warning specific to zfs file system.
Many thanks in advance for your support,

  • A few (basic) questions about the iPhone

I just got my iPhone 3GS about a week ago. I am very new to the whole smartphone arena, so some of my questions my seem stupid. Please be kind regardless.
I've learned a lot about the iPhone by trial and error (pressing buttons to see what happens) but one thing I just discovered was the multitasking bar. When I accessed it, I saw every app I had run since I got the phone displayed in the multitasking bar. And I know that by holding the icons on the bar, you can bring up a red minus sign, touch it, and remove that app from the bar. My question is, are all of those apps displayed in the mutltasking bar constantly running in the background, and thus, draining more battery than necessary?
Secondly, on the topic of wifi. I have my phone set to automatically join known networks and ask me to join unknown networks that it detects. However, it doesn't seem to be doing that. I still have to manually go to settings and search for the network. It will automatically join my home network (for example, when I go somewhere and come home, it will switch back to my home network automatically), but it won't do this with, for example, the wifi network at McDonald's even though I did go through the setup and make that network a known network. Am I mistaken in thinking the phone should do this automatically, or do I have to search for the network every single time? Also, since I have "ask to join networks" checked, will it automatically detect nearby networks, or do I also have to manually search for those? I understand this question may be confusing, so I can try to clarify if need be.
My last question is concerning conserving the battery. I currently have both wifi and 3G active on my phone, and I have read conflicting reports of which one drains more battery. Some say to turn off 3G and keep wifi, others say vice versa. I'm at home a lot so I'm always near my home wifi network and don't need 3G for data transfer unless I'm out and about. So is it better to turn 3G off unless I leave? I'm just trying to do whatever I can to conserve battery because I've noticed that the battery drains quite rapidly.
Sorry for the long post, I just wanted totry and clear those things up. I hope you can help me. Thanks in advance.

Only the last 4 apps to be run are actually active and in RAM. The others are swapped out to flash memory in a saved state (i.e you should be able to resume where you left off, if the app is written to support that). They don't therefore drain battery. I close all apps down from time to time (every few days) just to keep things neat.
Secondly, on the topic of wifi. I have my phone set to automatically join known networks and ask me to join unknown networks that it detects. However, it doesn't seem to be doing that. It should automatically list new networks when (a) you're in range and (b) you try to connect to the internet (e.g. browse to a web page or check for email)

The issue is not which drains more battery, but which you need to connect to the internet. Where you have wifi access, switch off 3G, where you have 3G, switch off wifi.

  • Few questions about iPhone vs Touch

Okay so i'm thinking of getting an iPod Touch but since I have AT&T already I might get an iPhone instead. But a few things are keeping me undecided.
I know that you need to activate your iPhone and from reading a few things on this website it says that the store you buy it from does it. I already have a wireless contract with AT&T, so do I need to pay some kind of activation fee or can I just stick my SIM card into it.
Also I want to make sure that I can still use my iPhone as a normal iPod if I were to cancel my contract with AT&T. Now I ready on this website that you just need to get the SIM card in your phone that was used to activate it and you should be able to fix it, is this correct?
Now if it is correct what if my SIM card messes up or something? My mom and dad both had their SIM cards go haywire within 24 hours of each other. How can I use it then?
Last, I have been hearing problems about 3G vs WiFi, like youtube going slow when on WiFi but perfect on 3G. Does this problem still exist? Is it fixable? How easy is it to switch from 3G to just WiFi or to basically shut off 3G? I do not pay for a data plan so I do not need to end up with a $200 bill because I accidentally used 3G instead of WiFi.
Last question, can you still use the iPhone like you can the iPod for listening to music in your car and still receive phone calls with no problems?
So what are the pros and cons vs iTouch vs iPhone?

I know that you need to activate your iPhone and from reading a few things on this website it says that the store you buy it from does it. I already have a wireless contract with AT&T, so do I need to pay some kind of activation fee or can I just stick my SIM card into it.
How much will I pay for iPhone 3G?
If you are upgrade eligible and your account is in good standing, you will pay $199 for 8GB (black) and $299 for 16GB (black or white). Two-year contract required.
If you are not currently eligible, you may have the option to purchase an early upgrade priced at $399 for 8GB (black) or $499 for 16GB (black or white). Two-year contract required.
    In the future, AT&T may offer a no-commitment option of $599 for 8GB and $699 for 16GB.
    Is there an upgrade fee?
Yes. There is an $18 upgrade fee which will be billed to your account.
Also I want to make sure that I can still use my iPhone as a normal iPod if I were to cancel my contract with AT&T. Now I ready on this website that you just need to get the SIM card in your phone that was used to activate it and you should be able to fix it, is this correct?
If you were to Cancel your contract please remember terms and conditions apply for early termination. Once De-activated you will not be able to fully update your iPhone when an iPhone update is released as it requires an active AT&T SIM card to confirm account information and unlock the iPhone for full use.
Now if it is correct what if my SIM card messes up or something? My mom and dad both had their SIM cards go haywire within 24 hours of each other. How can I use it then?
You need an active AT&T SIM card to be able to re-activate an iPhone after a Restore and or Update of the OS. De-activated SIM cards will not work.
Switching back and fourth is pretty easy. The moment you leave a WiFi zone range it will hop onto at&t network automatically. Walk back into range of a WiFi Zone you connected to before and it will auto connect for you. Like when you leave and come back home.
iPhone comes with a $30 unlimited data plan. So you will not go over your data usage only SMS usage if you do not have a plan to cover your usage.
So what are the pros and cons vs iTouch vs iPhone?
Phone comes with a monthly bill and a contract, iPod Touch does not.

  • A question about iphone restore/backup?

Ok so I want to do a restore on my iphone, and at first I wanted to do a "rstore from backup" but it says that I do not h ave enough room to process that. So now the only way is to restore as new, and then manually select backup.
So, the question is, if I do restor as new, and then manully backup, Will my apps, music, photo, contacts, texts and everything/data I have on my iphone be backed up? So I won't loose any of these things I listed right? I just did a backup a few minutes ago, so it is the most recent backup.
Also, will my iphone SETTINGS be the same as I have now? because I don't want to readjust and set settings on my iphone again, to be more clear the settings I'm mentioning is like the brightness, oriental lock etc. Will those be set as factory settings or will it be the same as now? just wondering. Thank you so much for your answer!

If you are asking about backing up before restoring your phone, if you wish to do this on your computer rather than iCloud, connect your phone to your comptuer, open iTunes, click on the name of your phone in iTunes, go to the Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings and click Back Up Now, then go to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.  At the end of the restore process, choose restore from iTunes Backup and choose this backup to restore from.  Your phone will look just as it does now when you're done.
Edit: Except that you may have to re-enter the passwords for your email accounts, etc.

  • A few quick questions about my new MP3 pla

Ok, I like to get to know anything I buy so I decided to come here and ask, I hope you dont mind answering (My MP3 player is the MuVo c00):
) In the instruction manual it says that play WMA file reduce the battery life of your player. Since converting them reduces the size by a fair bit I was wondering if the reduced battery life was worth it and how much it reduces the battery life.
    2) When is a good time to replace the bettery in my player? Should I wait for it to completly die or what because I dont want to go replacing batteries 3 quarters full.
    3) Is there any sound or quality differences between MP3 format and WMA?
    4) Is the program that came with the player the best thing to add music with or would buying something else do the trick or even just copy and paste?
    5) Finally, how do you attach the neck strap? I dont see any place where it could go unless you have to attach it with the arm band on it.
Thanks for your help and I might have some more question but untill further notice this is all I have and again thaks for your time.

. You have to bear in mind this is for an equivalent MP3 e.g. a 28 kbit/s encoded WMA is going to use more power than a 28 kbit/s MP3. Normally WMAs are encoded at a lower rate anyway, hence will use less power. There are many factors that affect battery usage.
    2. Wait for it to go flat.
    3. Complex answer. In general WMA is used when you want more space and aren't so worried about quality, at the 64 - 28 kbit/s range. MP3s (using the LAME encoder) are better at the higher bit-rates of 92 kbit/s. The bottom line is try a few different bit-rates for both MP3 and WMA, take a listen, and decide for yourself.
    4. With the MuVo it's very easy, just use Windows Explorer to copy files. I wouldn't buy any other software, unless you find something you really like to create MP3/WMA files.
    5. Not sure on this one...

  • Question about Iphones

I am in the military and currently stationed in Vietnam and my girlfriend is currently in Botswana. We both travel a lot and I wanted to get myself and her a nice phone that does a lot and works almost anywhere. Before I go ahead and lay a couple hundred down on 2 Iphones I wanted to get some advice from owners of these phones. Especially anybody here that does a lot of traveling. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Some relevant issues to consider:
iPhones are quad-band GSM phones, so they'll work just about everywhere.
    Roaming charges are expensive!
Most iPhones are carrier-locked in the country of origin, and cannot be used with 'local' SIM cards. The exceptions are unlocked phones sold in certain countries (Belgium, Hong Kong, Italy, to name a few; see this linked kbase article).
Should anything go wrong, warranty service for iPhones is provided only in the country where the iPhone was purchased.

  • Question about iPhone/iPod and playing songs

    Hi all,
This is my first question here, so please be patient with me if I'm rambling, or this is posted in the wrong forum.
I've recently downloaded a language learning course and want to put it on my iPhone so I can learn Italian as I'm on the bus. While it's great having this course at my fingertips, I want to keep these particular audio files from playing when I'm listening to music on the iPod.
So my question(s) is this..is it possible to somehow ADD files to the iPhone (iPod) while excluding them from the general iPod playlist? I don't want to have to skip over these files each time I'm listening to music, but I still want to keep the files on the iPhone(iPod). If it is possible, how would I go about it?
    Thanks for all help!
    Cheers!

There's a work around by using playlists in computer's iTunes.
In iTunes, create one playlist with all the songs you want on the iPhone.
Create another with your language courses.
Sync with the selected playlists in iTunes when connected to the iPhone.
(With iPhone connected and selected in iTunes, in Music tab select Sync Music, Selected playlists, artists, ... and checked the two playlists mentioned above.  Click Sync button.)
Now on iPhone you can choose music or language course playlist without interferences.
