A few "technical" iPhone questions

Believe it or not, I'm not going to complain about the price drop!
Instead, I've owned my iPhone for a couple of days now, and have a few burning questions:
1) Does the iPhone have the ability to keep nagging me that I missed a call?
2) Many times, when I make or receive a call, either I cannot hear the other end, or the other end cannot hear me. It's like mute is on, but it isn't. Has anyone else had this problem? (It not just between iPhones, either, it's happened with me calling a Verizon number).
3) Is there any way to have the contacts screen display the records my the way Outlook says to display (file as) a contact? If I have Jim Jones at Acme Computer, I'd like the contact on the iPhone to be under Acme Computer, not Jim Jones. If I have 10 people at Acme Computer in my contacts, doesn't it make sense to have them grouped together instead of spread all over the alphabet?
4) Is there any way to put some of the "nested" funtions on the main iPhone page? In other words, under PHONE, there is RECENT and VOICEMAIL. Is there a way to put those as icon on the main icon menu screen instead of having to touch, touch, touch to get to them? It sure would be nice, while driving, to just have to touch one button to get to where I want instead of having to take my eyes off the road to navigate a bunch of screens...
Thanks for your input.

No. Not at this time. I haven't had a phone that does though.

During the two months plus I've had it, this has happened a few times. I just call them back and it's fine. This did happen occasionally with my old phone as well.

I use Apple Address Book which has a check box to designate the contact as a business instead of an individual. The listing is then alphabetized by the business name instead. Is there anything in Outlook to do this same thing? I'm not sure what would happen with more than one listing from the same business. One way I've gotten around it in Address Book is to add multiple phone numbers under the business (or household for friends/families with more than one phone number) and then create a custom phone type for each person (ie. Jim Jones cell, Jim Jones home, etc.). One other thing to keep in mind is to use Groups. If you find that your contact list is getting too crowded, create some groups in Outlook and then sync the groups to your iPhone. You could create a group that had all your contacts from "Acme Computer".
4) Is there any way to put some of the "nested" funtions on the main iPhone page? In other words, under PHONE, there is RECENT and VOICEMAIL. So far the only keys that you can change are in the iPod portion. Give it a few more days. Navigating the screens will become second nature. I have no trouble in the car.
Good luck and enjoy your new iPhone!

  • Japanese iPhone Questions

My wife is moving from Tokyo to the US soon, and her current mobile phone won't work in the US. I've got a few cell phone questions and looking for some advice. She speaks English pretty well, but I figure it'd be easier for her if the new phone she gets were in Japanese.
I suggested getting an iPhone, since I assume she can switch between English and Japanese for the display, menus, etc (since it just has "virtual" keys"). Is this correct? Would it make any difference if she got the iPhone in Japan and brought it here (and change the SIM card to get a US phone number), or if she just bought it in the US? I'm guessing it'd be easier to buy it here, assuming that she can change the language it displays. Is there any unlocking to do for the phone to work in the US and Japan (most of the time, it'll be in the US, except for visits back to Japan once in a while).
Would another phone (from the myriad of phones they have in Japan) work here if she changes the SIM card when she gets here? This is if she prefers a different phone instead of the iPhone.
I've got Verizon now (have used them for many years), but I'm thinking switching to AT&T would be better for this situation, if we get a Japanese phone (so we can switch SIM cards).
    Thanks in advance

I contacted Softbank yesterday about the possibility of using my AT&T iPhone in Japan on their network and simply renting a sim card. Here is the text from their reply. I hope it is helpful.

  • Is there any way to contact verizon with a detailed cell phone technical support question?

Is there any way to contact Verizon with a detailed cell phone technical support question?  I prefer e-mail so as to provide details (like I am trying to provide here).  I have tried in-store personnel (no help at all) and the web chat - they just want to see me more data instead of helping me with my basic problem!
I CAN NOT GET ANYONE FROM VERIZON TO GIVE ME ANY HELP NOR CAN I FIND A WAY TO FILE A COMPLAINT.  AT THIS POINT I JUST WANT TO DROP MY VERIZON ACCOUNT BUT I'M SURE THAT IT WILL COST ME A SMALL FORTUNE TO GET OUT OF IT.
    Here is my issue:
Chat transcript removed as required by the Verizon Wireless Terms of Service
BELOW IS A SCREEN COPY FROM REDDIT ABOUT SOMEONE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM WITH A VERIZON CELL PHONE
So last night my RAZR MAXX HD did something totally bewildering by spontaneously downloading 2.6 GB of data over the course of ~ 3 hours. Fortunately I was able to catch this problem before it ended up being really expensive, but I still exceeded my 2 GB data plan by 600MB.
    The Culprits:
Reddit News Free: 160 MB foreground / 0.96 GB background
Android OS: 0 MB foreground / 1.18 GB background
Several unnamed applications: ~ 350 MB
    Screenshots:
    The massive data spike
    Android OS data usage
    Reddit News Free data usage
    Weird unnamed processes
    Detailed timeline:
5:12 PM: Incident begins according to VZW data usage website (2.60410 GB used). This is around the last time that I used my phone at the laundromat before getting dinner and watching Game of Thrones.
8:04 PM: 50% of data allowance used (txt msg)
8:31 PM: 75% of data allowance used (txt msg)
8:58 PM: 90% of data allowance used (txt msg)
9:13 PM: 100% of data allowance used (txt msg)
10:05 PM: Got the text messages and immediately put the phone into airplane mode
    10:30 PM: Took screenshots
10:45 PM: Enabled wifi, installed Kaspersky premium. Scan returned no threats.
11:00 PM: Left phone in airplane mode, went to sleep.
    The questions:
What was the root cause of this issue? Did Reddit News freak out as a result of an esoteric bug or was my phone hacked?
If this was a simple Reddit News bug, then why was the Android OS also trying to use such a massive amount of background data?
What the hell are these unnamed numeric applications? I've inspected my process history and this is the first time they have ever attempted to use data.
I'm pretty sure that I can explain this situation to Verizon and get out of having to pay additional data usage fees, but I would like to know more about the problem before I get in touch with them.

All I can think is your phone may have background downloaded an OTA update, and you'd then be prompted with something like, "As update to your Android system has been downloaded, would you like to install it now?"
I do find it very odd that the update would be 2.6GB. As a rough base, the CyanogenMod 10.1 firmware for your device is well under 200MB, so unless Verizon has a ****-ton of bloatware in the update, or it had to attempt to download multiple times for some reason, it may be a stretch.
But doing a little homework, it looks like the Verizon Razr Maxx was updated to 4.1 in late March. Maybe they're still rolling it out in waves? Have you gotten the update yet?
Edit: Aaaand I just noticed you appear to be running an AOSP-based ROM, which totally rules out a carrier update being sent out.
Edit2: If you want to live dangerously, you could try running:
    #kill -9 12289
That 12289 is the PID listed in your screenshot. But don't run that without fulling understanding the kill command.
The ps command could also be of use, but probably not.

I can confirm that the phone is currently at 4.1.2 and that I wasn't prompted for an OTA update. The fact that both the Android OS and Reddit News processes were simultaneously using an extremely large amount of data is unlikely to be a coincidence...

That is very curious that the spikes happened at the same time.I'm curious. It may have put at least some of that 2.6GB somewhere. You could use a data visualizer tool to see if you can find it, which may lead to more clues.

    The largest directories are:
DCIM: Normal looking photos (90,825 KB)
Android: Primarily map cache data (64,846 KB)
If it was downloading content then it did not significantly save content to storage. It's not like I have anything particularly sensitive on the phone, but the idea that it was uploading a snapshot of my data definitely makes me uncomfortable.

Yup, Digital Camera IMages and videos.Somewhere in /sdcard/Android would be my guess as to where a mysterious file would be downloaded, but if it's only 64MB, and mostly map data, I'd safely rule it out.I'm sorry, but I'm stumped here.Edit: I should mention I don't think this is malware, because unless a malicious app gained superuser access, any data it used would show under it's own apk in the data usage list, not Android OS.

Although I'm not really up to speed with the Android platform, I come from a UNIX background so I feel comfortable running commands. How do I pull up a bash terminal? Do I need to root the phone first?

There's a number of terminal emulators in the Play Store that work well. You don't need a rooted phone to get to the shell as your user, but any privileged command won't execute unless you can grant it permission from the Superuser app that is installed when you root the device. So you could probably do a ps -e, but not a kill -9.

Got it. I downloaded a terminal emulator but unfortunately those processes no longer exist.Does Android keep a generic log of system level events like /var/log/syslog?

I don't think so, and I know you'd need superuser permission to read most of the files in /var/log anyway. I'm not super familiar with how Android does its logging, but I do know that the two files of interest are the logcat and dmesg.

Want to mention here that using your settings to set your data cap (set it on your billing day), then you won't go over again. Those text messages are really unhelpful, as they send out well after the data has been used. Chances are good you hit close to the 2GB mark before you received the bulk of the messages.

    Quit installing pirated apps.

That's definitely not the case here; both my PC and and Android phone are free from pirated apps.

You used the data.  Verizon can not see what it was sued for.  However your phone can see whats apps used the data.  go to settings-data usage- there will be a place that says data usage cycle.  line the dates up with your cycle.  then there will be a bar graph below that   extend bother white bars one all the way to the left and one all the way to the right.  after those are extended below that will be a list of apps,  there should be one that used over 2 gb and that will show you what app used that data in her purse

  • A few post config questions on new setup

    Hi Group,
Just a few post config questions.
First, how can I confirm my controller is in fact associating properly with an NTP server?  On a typically cisco product, I could just do a 'show ntp associations' or a 'show ntp status'.  I cannot see a way to confirm this on the gui or command line.
Second, on my guest network with web-auth, if one were to choose to not use https for web-auth and instead use unsecure http, would that be possible and if so where in the gui?
    Thanks.

The third field is from a WLC running v7.4 not v7.2.  I usually would install a 3rd party certificate, but what eles you can try is issue this command on from the CLI.  It had issues working with certain code versions, but you might as well give it a try.
    config network web-auth secureweb disable
    Thanks,
    Scott

IPhone question:  Im trying to update applications on my iphone.  When I do it I'm as for password from a different Apple ID from what I have in Itunes.  How do I change so that both are the same?

All apps are tied to the apple id that it was used to purchase or download the app.
did you use a different id to buy the app?
you can change id, settings - appstore - apple id - log out and log in with correct id.

  • A Few iPhone Questions I Can't Find Answers to...

Hi. I'm super interested in getting the iPhone. Here are some questions I'd love to get answered in order to get closer to obtaining the iPhone:
    1. How much are the initial costs, mainly concerned about the activation fee? - After reading the fine print I see $36, but is this correct?
    2. Can I see all my ATT Minutes & Text Usages on iTunes so I can be up to date on how close I am to going over?
    3. With Rollover, can my minutes just accumulate over and over? I believe I heard something about rollover minutes capping up to my monthly minutes, say 900.
    (I'm interested in the $79.99 /month plan)
    4. Unlimited Mobile to Mobile is the whole ATT network, correct?
    5. Finally, if you have an iPhone, how's the phone bill? :]
    6. Finally x2, are you happy/satisfied with the iPhone, why?
Thanks alot, these answers will definately influence my decision on getting an iPhone. Thanks.

    1. How much are the initial costs, mainly concerned about the activation fee? - After reading the fine print I see $36, but is this correct?
This sounds correct but whatever is provided at AT&T's website.
    2. Can I see all my ATT Minutes & Text Usages on iTunes so I can be up to date on how close I am to going over?
Not with iTunes but the iPhone includes the following options under the AT&T Services selection:
    Check Bill Balance
    Directory Assistance
    Pay My Bill
    View My Minutes
Voice Connect (which requires an additional fee)
AT&T MyAccount - which takes you to AT&T's website with Safari on the iPhone to log in to your account which includes all this detailed information.
    3. With Rollover, can my minutes just accumulate over and over? I believe I heard something about rollover minutes capping up to my monthly minutes, say 900.
The cap per month is your anytime minutes package. If you choose the 450 anytime minutes plan and don't use any of your anytime or billable minutes, 450 anytime minutes will rollover to the next month giving you 900 anytime minutes the next month which continues to accumulate for the anytime minutes not used each month. There is a 12 month limit so if I have 100 anytime rollover minutes this month which is not used by December next year, these rollover minutes are lost.
    4. Unlimited Mobile to Mobile is the whole ATT network, correct?
Correct - you have unlimited mobile to mobile minutes at any time of the day with fellow AT&T subscribers. These minutes are free and do not count against your chosen anytime minutes plan.
    5. Finally, if you have an iPhone, how's the phone bill? :]
Not sure what type of answer you are looking for with this question.
    6. Finally x2, are you happy/satisfied with the iPhone, why?
I'm very happy and satisfied. This is the first phone I've used that syncs with my Mac's Address Book contacts and iCal calendar events without needing to jump through hoops with work arounds that didn't work completely or reliably. It is a phone, an iPod and an internet device. As long as you have cell phone reception, you have an always on internet access for email account access and web browsing. In the past when I traveled, I carried my PowerBook, my iPod and my cell phone. Unless I need to do work, I now carry my iPhone which combines these three and it fits in my shirt pocket.
I also use my cell phone in place of a landline so it has been great for me. I don't go anywhere without it and I also use the iPhone's alarm feature for my alarm clock.

  • A few Technical questions, and problem with entitlements

    Hello everyone,
I always hate my first post being a question, or several in this case, but I have no other option and wouldn't have found this forum if it weren't for the knowledge already spread.
    Background...
    Using Windows Vista and Flash CS5;
    I am using a second gen ipod touch;
    Made a small Ball app;
Used the following videos followed to the "T" to make a Certificate, .p12 file, and provisioning file
    certificate...
    http://www.videomo.com/yvideo.php?i=bXB6U1hBcWuRpVzBxVUk&create-an-iphone-developer-certif cate-from-windows/

    provisioning profile...
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ni-9jZPcZ1E&feature=related
To the best of my knowledge everything is setup in portal the right way... and i mean:  Device is added, checked udid several times and device name is same...bundle ID is correct in publishing settings...I used my NAME (was a problem for some people) for CN when doing the above... I have dragged the profile to the library in itunes and synced. I have UPDATED my iphone to the 3.whatever platform, and updated itunes to 9.X ...I have dragged everything to library and synced...i have restarted ipod and comp several times...
i have tried publishing as test, beta debugging, and adhoc...no luck with any of them.
At first, i had a "app cannot be installed because the signer is not valid" error when syncing the app through itunes...but then i dragged provision profile to ipod and I now get...
"The application "Ball" was not installed on the iPod "Wiggles" because the entitlements are not valid."
I spent all night last night trying to diagnose this problem, found very little info, someone else posted here, but it was never resolved.
I have checked again and again that the device is the right device, and i have remade my certs, provisioning profiles...p12s....exports, publications...etc....again and again.
    Please help!
SECOND question:  Am I not going to be able to release any apps in the iphone store because of the apple not supporting flash thing? (basically, i'm asking if i should stop learning this, altogether and just learn a different language and platform for development for iphone.
I do not own a mac, so I am trying to work around that.....
Any advise is appreciated! Thanks !
    thank you...

How did you solved, I have tried everything nothing works.  My app id is 83TUF2RQRE.com.company_name.appstest, the screen from apple iOS Provisioning Portal -> App ID looks like this.....

  • A few technical questions

Ok, I just got my 5Gen 30 Gig today, and I had a few questions.
    1) I had to update some of the names of the songs, because they wouldnt show up under the artist's name. I updated the names, the songs I fixed went back to the proper artist name. I then plugged the iPod back in, and it synched, but when I looked under the artists names to see if it had updated, it hadnt. Example, I know I have 5 songs by a certain artist, but when I look up the artist's name on the iPod, it says only 3. I'm just curious as to how to get it to do that.
    2) I have it set to shuffle. Is there a way to have all songs show up, so if a song is on I don't want to listen to, but there's one that's a few songs up on the list, that I can go to that one without having to skip to the artist and going that way?
    3) Is there a way to get iTunes to show a screen that shows all the songs the iPod, so I can delete one of the iPod if I choose?

    1) See: Some songs don't don't show under artist on my iPod.
    2) Shuffle is a random selection. There's no "list" as such to show you what will play next. If you don't like the song that's selected simply click the ff once to advance to the next song.
    3) When your ipod is connected, click on "music" to see a listing of the songs on the iPod.
If you have the iPod set to automatically transfer songs, and you no longer want a copy of those songs on either the iPod or in iTunes, simply delete the songs in iTunes. Highlight the songs you no longer want then right click and select "clear", or from the edit menu select "clear". Next time you connect the iPod, the songs will be deleted from there also.
Only do this if you no longer want the songs on both the iPod and your computer.
You can also use the "only update checked songs" method in the iPod options (right click on the iPod in the source list in iTunes and select options, then select "only update checked songs"). With this preference checked, you can remove the check mark from the songs in iTunes that you no longer want on the iPod. The next time you connect the iPod, those unchecked songs will be removed from the iPod whilst still being retained in iTunes. You can check and uncheck songs as you change your mind about what songs you want to put on the iPod. Songs that have no check mark against them will be skipped over when played back in iTunes.
If you have the iPod set to manually manage your songs, and you want to delete the song from the iPod only, then select the iPod in the source list of iTunes, or click on the "music" option underneath it to show all your songs. Highlight the song(s) you no longer want on the iPod, right click and select "clear", or use the edit menu as previously mentioned.
This method only deletes the songs from the iPod, so if you no longer want the song in iTunes also, you'll need to delete it from there separately using the method above.
If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, all these settings can be found in the summary screen.

  • A few more iPhone 4 questions

I currently have the HTC HD2 and whilst I think this is a truly great phone I do miss the apps and so probably going to get the iPhone 4. One thing I like about the HD2 is the way text is always auto fitted when web browsing, no matter how much you zoom in ie when you zoom in the text is reformatted so it fits the screen without having to scroll left and right to read the rest of the sentence. I know when I had the iPhone 3G if I zoomed in you could only see part of the sentence and had to scroll left and right to read. Will the iPhone 4 reformat the text like the HD2 or will it be the same as the 3G? Are there any browsers in the app store that allow the reformatting of text?
I'm guessing with the new retina display text will be much sharper/clearer and so smaller text that appears a bit blurred/fuzzy on the 3G will now be much clearer on the 4 and so legible?
Does anyone know how quick the iPhone 4 will be in terms of opening apps and web browsing? The 3Gs was billed as being twice as fast as the 3G, but I've not seen anything like this about the 4

Does anyone know how quick the iPhone 4 will be in terms of opening apps and web browsing? The 3Gs was billed as being twice as fast as the 3G, but I've not seen anything like this about the 4
It will be significantly faster, with a high speed 1GHz processor with an integrated graphics processing unit (GPU). The 3GS runs on an 833 MHz Samsung chip that is underclocked to 600 MHz.

I'm trying to decide if the iPhone is better than my 4.5 year old Sony Ericsson s710a. I know that sounds weird, but I really love my phone. I'm also not a big Apple fan, so getting this phone would be a big leap for me.
My current phone has a some basic camera features like white balance, night mode, B&W, etc. Obviously they can't add a light like mine has, but do you think some of these other features could be added in a future firmware update?
Also can the camera record video or just stills?
Alarm clock... I use my phone as an alarm clock and can set it to go off on just certain days of the week. Does the iPhone have something like this?
I'm sure Apple would never allow users to use an MP3 as a ring (otherwise why would anyone spend a fortune to buy one?), so I guess I'd just have to give up the Legend of Zelda ring I made.
PC Connecting... I don't like iTunes, I've seen a plugin for WMP11 for syncing an iPod, would something like that also work for the iPhone?
WIFI versus Edge... Is there a way to disable Edge so that it will only give me 'net access when I'm near wifi? Cellphone bills are already too expensive without accidentally getting charged a fortune for checking my email.
Are there any third parties offering a decent remote for the headphones? I'm thinking of something like the PSP's inline remote that has full Play/pause, skip forward/back, stop, and mute.
That's all I can think of at the moment. The price seems a bit much, but $400 is actually what I paid for my current phone over 4 years ago, so I guess it's not too bad and for once the high price of an Apple product seems worth it.
I know most of you are cuckoo for Apple puffs but remember not everyone is, for example I asked my friend the other day what he thought of the iPhone and he said "it looks pretty cool... but it's an Apple product."

I doubt that this can be accomplished through firmware updates to the current iteration of the iPhone.

    This is a still camera.

    Yes

You are correct about the use of MP3. Who knows what the future will bring.

You need iTunes for the iPhone.

You cannot disable the Edge network but you do not get charged for checking your mail as long as it is within the limits of your calling plan. You can use wi-fi anytime you are in the vicinity of a wi-fi network.

Not up on headphone technology but by the term remote are you talking about Bluetooth for playing music. If that is what you are asking, there is no set available at this time.

  • Technical purchase question of getting a new iPhone 3Gs

I have the original iPhone with a normal plan (39 + 20 incl 200 SMS).
My goal is to upgrade to the 3GS and give mine to my wife.
So I need to get a family plan, add my data, her data and still hope to get the 200 SMS on hers, I need to get 200 for me for 5.-.
Can I do this by pre-ordering a phone online or do I need to wait and have this all arranged in the store?

You can pre-order and then when you go to the store to pickup, they can take care of all of that for you.

  • I have a few technical questions on Safari 4!

    *Keyboard Shortcuts*
    How do I set these?
    *Smooth scrolling*
I am using the Windows version of Safari 4. Is there a way to enable smooth scrolling?

    - You can just use the built-in keyboard short cuts.
    - Smooth Scrolling is not available (unfortunately).
