A fix to personal web domain name problem between iWeb and GoDaddy

There are numerous posts about problems with iWeb understanding both your personal name domain with and without the www.prefix. After five days, 25 calls to both Apple and GoDaddy where I was getting much conflicting advice even within each organization, and I experienced many problems such as the site not being found and iWeb asking for password authorization whenever anyone visited the site. The good news is that I was finally able to resolve the problem with these simple steps:
First, check that your Web site actually exists by going to http://web.mac.com/yourusername
If that works then you need to set up a forward in GoDaddy.
In GoDaddy's account manager, make sure that the forwarding address is set to http://web.mac.com/yourusername. This must be the same address that you just checked through your browser. (I also advise you to NOT USE the .ME designation that Apple is moving to. It's not solid yet. .MAC will work for a long time. It's web.mac.com/ that will work).
Then click on the Total DNS Control and MX Records link.
This is where my instructions that work differ from many other instructions, but heed my advice and you'll save a lot of time.
Look in the CNAMES area and make sure that the www host alias points to "@" and not to anything else such as "web.me.com" or "www.mac.com". If you don't have such an entry, then create one by clicking on the "add a new CNAME Record"button. Caution - if you don't use the "@" (at sign) here you WILL run into trouble where your custom domain name will only work WITHOUT a "www." prefix. (While this may not be a problem for your mac friends, most everyone using a PC will think they need to type in a "WWW." and that will cause a problem).
Then if you wish, you can also go back into your domain forwarding area and click on the masking tab and click to enable masking. This will make your url only show the short personal domain name rather than the very long iWeb mobile me URL appended with your personal domain name.
Confirm your entry, and then wait anywhere from 20 minutes to four hours or more for the tens of thousands of servers around the world to repopulate those instructions. I was able to see a change take place in minutes where my associate in another state didn't see the change for two hours. Don't worry, just wait.
If you do this, you should be able to then go to your Web site through either www.YourPersonalDomainName.com or YourPersonalDomainName.com
Good luck!

I was finally able to resolve the problem with these simple steps:
Many people would not be interested in using url forwarding/masking as you suggest to solve this issue, since that makes it impossible to bookmark individual pages of your site. For those who do wish to set the www CNAME to web.mac.com, I think the problem can normally be solved by also setting the @ A Record to 17.250.248.34.

  • Use only IP-number and skip web domain name?

I have a Mac Mini Server and I am about to order an external firewall device. The firewall will be used with vpn to get access to the server from the internet. Access to the server will only be for my colleages . The server should not be accessible for other people at all (e.g., no public website, etc).
Here comes my newbie question…is it possible to only use my static public IP number to get access to the server through vpn? Do I really need a a web domain name?
Do I really need to get dns involved on the outside?
At the moment I am using my servers Wiki and blog by typing in the IP-number in the browsers address field. It would be fine with with me to continue with that.

is it possible to only use my static public IP number to get access to the server through vpn? Do I really need a a web domain name?
Sure. if you can remember your IP address you can use that anywhere. DNS exists because there are literally millions of IP addresses out there and human brains are better at remembering words (e.g. 'discussions.apple.com') than they are numbers (e.g. '64.212.100.59').
Do I really need to get dns involved on the outside?
Since it's only you and your colleagues, not at all.

It's also not hard to setup a local DNS for your internal systems - once you're connected to VPN you'd automatically start using the internal DNS server and would be able to use memorable names, but it's entirely your choice.

  • Re Directing several domain names to one iweb site

Hello, what needs to happen on Apples' end so I may re direct several domain names that are parked at godaddy to the 1 web site I just set up with iweb? Thanks
    GMorton

Since there are three ways to use a personal domain, you should first decide what you want displayed in the browser address bar when your site is viewed. See THIS page under +"Chapter 1: What is a personal domain? What does it do?"+.
...When you've decided what you want to appear in the browser address bar, read the rest of that page and if you still have questions, post back here.

  • Pointing a Domain Name at my iWeb Pages

    Hi All
I am pretty sure I've got the Podcasting thing sussed, apart from the RSS thing which of course good old iweb does for you, my question is this: Can I purchase a domain name of my choosing and then point it at my iWeb pages thereby using the RSS feed that iWeb automatically produces, or is it frowned upon to do such things? My podcasts will be video but nothing dodgy, just car stuff
    Thanks
    A.L.I

yes, that will work perfectly. if you get a domain, here is how you could "forward" or "point it to" you .mac page:

  • How can I fix a problem between Firefox and my printer? When I try to print a window appears Save as ,then another saying Firefox not responding and printing does not work

I used to be able to print correctly using Firefox as my browser, but something changed in the last month or so,possibly after a Firefox update. I`m not really sure how it happened but there seems to be a problem between Firefox and my printer. So I have been using Internet Explorer as my default so I can print. I would prefer to use Firefox again since that is where my bookmarks are. Is there a way to get the connection between Firefox and my printer back?

'''Save as''' = sounds like you don't have your printer selected, or you have ''Print to file'' selected

  • I have a web site built by Yahoo Web Site Builder which does not have a Mac version, is there any compatability between Iweb and the old Yahoo program?

I have a web site built by Yahoo Web Site Builder which does not have a Mac version, is there any compatability between Iweb and the old Yahoo program? If not how do I clear off the old site so as to re publish with Iweb.

iWeb cannot import published files so you would need rebuild the site.
Yahoo hosting is notoriously poor and their tech support is awful. I would suggest you look for new hosting and start afresh. Some pointers for choosing hosting...

If you do choose to go this route, transfer your domain name registration away from Yahoo to your new host.

  • Problems between PE4 and 10

I have a drawing that was resized to a certain length using PE4. I have now upgraded to PE10 and when I print the drawing , it prints 3-4 times  larger than what it should be. When I view the drawing, the ruler at the top of the screen shows it being the correct length and when I checked the deminsion in the resize box, it also has the correct length. Have I done something wrong or should I delete the drawing and start over from scratch?

Could you be a little more specific please? Sorry, I am not a tech guy just a poor laymen.

Facebook apparently has their site coded poorly for tablets with touch screens. Try using the Facebook app. It is not perfect either but it is better than view in a browser lately.

  • Another domain name problem

So I have a site with iWeb. The full address is-
    http://web.mac.com/neilbowman/GBFS/Graham_Bowman.html
I bought a domain name through yahoo-
    www.grahambowman.com
I set up the personal domain settings on mobile me
Then In the DNS settings the source to www.grahambowman.com
    and the destination is web.me.com.
I was wanting my address to be www.grahambowman.com, but there's problems.
When you go to that address is ads on /iWebSiteName/PageName.html
I really wanted it to be simply, www.grahambowman.com and not have the other stuff on it.
Also when you type in just grahambowman.com with no www it gets you to a yahoo under construction page. I've looked around in forums but can't get this to work correctly. Help would be greatly appreciated.

You domain works as it should.
The other stuff are the pages in your site. Millions of websites have them.
It that disturbs you, use a [frameset|http://htmlhelp.com/reference/html40/frames/frameset.html].
In that case you do not need a Personal domain at MMeor CNAME.
Use URL forwarding with masking. You can manage it at your domain host. They provide the frameset.

  • Personal Web Sharing Resolution Problem

I'd been running personal web sharing for about 4 weeks without any problems...until now.
If I send someone a URL to my site using the public IP (i.e. http://xxx.xxx.xx.xxx/~MyAccout). When they click on the URL it tries to resolve http://www.MyComputerName.local/~MyAccount. Where "MyComuterName" is the actual host name of my Mac.
I've made no configuration changes, and I don't understand where "www.MyComputerName.local" is coming form, eventhough I've given the IP address for the URL.
I did reverse DSN lookup on my the IP address. Even if I use the host name associated with my ISP's DNS record, in the URL that I send to friends, it still tries to resolve "http://www.MyComputerName.local/~MyAccount".
Anyone know what's going on? Thanks.
    Chuck

    Problem fixed.
Set "ServerName" in /etc/httpd/httpd.conf to my public IP. Everying is now working. Why it worked before I still don't understand, but it's working now.

  • Using your personal domain name in .Mac/iWeb?

Hi people, just a question about using my personal domain name which I have from UKreg.
Anyone know how to use this in iWeb? I have looked at a few sites explaining it, but looks like a hard task!
    Thanks : )

It's very easy actually. Follow the directions and links here:
    http://www.mac.com/web/en/Tips/185DE18A-73AB-4E9D-8BD4-A2A75A1C95CF.html
A couple clicks now that you already have your domain registered.

  • Web Domain Name Question??

So this is going to sound really noobie like...well because I'm not really a network admin by day.
I have my server set and functioning with DNS, Web, OD, and a mixture of file sharing services. So...when creating a new Site in Web service, I set a 'Domain Name' (like www.example.com) and 'Aliases' (like example.com). If I then go to a web browser and type "www.example.com" or "example.com" I get nothing...but, if I type in the FQDN of the server (like "http://ns1.mydomain.com"), it will go to my site.
Now, I know that the domain I'm setting isn't a registered domain, but with all of my client computers pointing to the DNS of the server, shouldn't it resolve to be like a 'local host' kinda thing?
I don't need this to be live to the internet...just a local site. Any help or suggestion is much appreciated!
    Thank you!!

    Hi Corey
To put it simply you really don't need any other IP address in the Server's DNS Server's field other than its own address. Of course this assumes the server is also the DNS Server. The Server in effect is using its own DNS to resolve itself locally and any client computers that are using it for their DNS as well as accessing the internet. Obviously clients using the Server for their DNS will also be accessing the internet using the Server.
If the Server is down then it won't matter whether if it can get on the internet - its down. For clients using the server it will matter. So for clients you could either not bother using the Server and use either the Router IP address (if the router is not your server) or any ISP supplied DNS Server addresses. Or place these addresses as secondary addresses.
A lot depends on how you want clients to access server hosted domains? If you want to use domain names then clients have to know which DNS Server resolves that name to an IP address. Of course you could just simply use the server's IP address locally - clients will still access the site.
This explanation is as simple as I can make it. There are others on these forums who could (or may if they post) explain things a lot better?
Glad I could help and thank you for the feedback.

  • Installation of Sun Directory Server on Home PC - Domain name problem

    Hi!
I would like to install SunONE directory server on my home PC but, I am unable to do so because one of the installation steps requires the fully qualified machine name. This is of format <hostname>.<domainname>. My home PC doesnot belong to any domain. Is there any solution to this problem? Is there a default domain name that I can use?
    Thanks in advance!
