A forwarding email address was deleted but is still operating?!

Until end of May this year I had 2  independent email addresses in use for @mac.com (access through iCloud) to forward  messages to. One of these addresses had to be eliminated for practical purposes by 30th of May, but mail keeps being returned with error messages by postmasters and mailer daemons etc. referring to that account.
I cannot seem to stop mac.com to ignore that one obsolete address which, in fact, does not exist anymore (called "illegal" by some non-delivery notifications).
What on earth can I do to stop the usage of a no longer existant account??

So far so good, I am aware that my previous setup was most likely done in MobileMe and I do remember that I "conveniently" ignored all the reminders that were being sent to make adjustments for the iCloud takeover ... it just didn't seem to apply to me; erroneous assumption as it turns out.
In the Mail preferences on the iCloud website I had entered two aliases for my mac account and added one additional outside mail account. I could not find any provision to actually forward to this address. If I did not eliminate the forwarding to the now "ghost" account, this apparently is still being used - and, as you already know, I want to desperately get rid of. I do not have AppleCare.
If I wish to go to http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/
not having a contractI with AppleCare, will they still be able and willing to help? I cannot say that I am a great expert and feel a bit lost in my predicament.
Well, I guess I'll go the the cloud contact and see what I am told. I hope I only have to get back with you to let you have the 10 points ...

    If you have the original receipts, you can take them to an Apple Store and they may be able to remove the activation lock. A good lesson learned to have an employee clear a device when leaving.

    If the messages says that it is a valid Apple ID but not an iCloud ID, it's becaure you are trying to create an iCloud account on a PC.  You can only create the account on an iOS device or Mac (running Lion or Mountain Lion).  After creating the account, you can then sign in with the ID on your PC, but you can't create the account on a PC.

    The sending of email is handled by the SMTP server. Something is wrong with your SMTP server settings, either the server name, your username or your password, or the port you are using. Since you got information from your email provider, try removing the account and adding it back, ensuring that you have everything spelled correctly for your server, username, and password. Make sure after adding all of that information that the account passes the verification.

    But I have an idea! Do you suppose I can reset my iPod touch to default>Have all my data on iTunes/folders>Set iPod touch as a new device> Create a new account with my fresh email>Connect to iTunes>Back up!

    You need to use the old ID and password to delete the iCloud account. After you delete the old account, you can sign in with the new ID in iCloud.

    "The reply" as in the Rescue email to reset your Security Questions? If so, then you will have to contact iTunes Support directly to get them reset:

    From the information that you have provided, it sounds like your Apple ID has been disabled.  You can read this to see how you can troubleshoot that issue.
    Apple ID is Disabled - Apple Club - Google Sites
    You can try signing out of your ID on the iPad and sign in with his ID and see if that works.
    Settings>iTunes and App Stores>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Then sign in with your husband's newly created ID.

    First go here - https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/ and login under the manage tab.  Check your information and be sure it is all correct.
    An AppleID is nothing more than an email address, so if you see another email address in the store, then someone has logged in with a different AppleID than yours.  Did you let someone else use your iPhone?

    dont give your password. in fact change your apple id password.  treat the email as spam/phishing

    my email address was changed from mine to my dads. he had changed my apple ID over to his email (i allowed him to use my ipad and this is what happened). i just changed my password and email back to mine and now my iMessage will not work. it keeps saying that my messages will not go through. i turned my imessage off and then back on and it is still not working!

    DId anyone figure this out, it just happened to me about 5 hours ago.
    I can now send from my macbook but still not my phone.

    I set up my email the way the phone and iPad do. Very simple. It works most the time, but I am usually on wifi also. I ran into problem saying email was rejected by server, and it put email in my outbox. I looked in here to see if anyone had a good solution, then realized after reading the post I never actually checked my servers. My actual servers were different than the defaults that were set up. Example : the default server was mail.roadrunner.com, but the actual should be pop-server.roadrunner.com, and same for the smpt-server.roadrunner.com. Based on the ISP, must have the correct servers. But I was always able to send while on wifi. That part I did not understand. But since I fixed the servers, I have not seen any problem sending on either the iPad or iPhone. If you have not found fix, hope this may help if still having problem

    There is no cache where the emails would be stored on the iPad, but you could try quitting the mail app and then launch it again and see if the emails return.
    Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Tap the home button. Then try mail again.
