A free way to control a windows PC from a Mac

Hi all,
My folks live a few hundred miles away, and I often need to help them with something on their Windows laptop. (Don't worry - their next machine will definitely be a Mac, now that they have played with my iMac!)
I would like to be able to remotely control their machine from my Mac (similar to how this is achieved where I work using WinVNC)
Ideally this software would be free, or a few dollars. Again, needs to be able to install on the Mac to control the windows PC. It will never need to operate in the other direction (i.e. they won't need to control my machine!)
Can anyone help? I would be v grateful for the saved 'over the phone' support, and my parents would definitely appreciate it!!!
Cheers, Chris

The PC must be running Windows XP or Vista, and have Remote Assistance turned on. See:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mobility/getstarted/remoteintro.mspx
In their router (if any), port 3389 will need to be open and forwarded to the PC's internal IP address. See:

  • Unable to change screen quality when accessing Window machine FROM my Mac

    Hi there,
I've been playing around with a copy of Apple Remote Desktop 3.1 and I'm very happy with the results when connecting to a Mac Server from my MacBook. We have quite a slow line so I use the sceen adjuster on the top-right corner of the screen to make the remote screen black & white to speed up the connection. I have another server here which is Windows server running RealVNC. When I connect to that machine and try changing the screen quality to black & white, it does nothing Can anyone change the screen quality when connect to a Windows machine from a Mac running Remote Desktop? If so, could you tell me your setup please?

  • Best way to create a Windows service from a LabVIEW executable?

What would be the best way to run a LabVIEW executable as a service? I needed this recently and I think I have set up such a service using srvany.exe from the Windows 2003 Resource Kit, but that seems like a bit of a hack. The Kit is not offically supported in Server 2008, but seems to work. I don't know about Server 2012 or beyond.
So what would be the "proper" way of going about creating a Windows service from a headless LabVIEW application?

The proper way is to interface to the according Windows service control API. That is however not a trivial task to do. We used to sell a LabVIEW toolkit which supported a full interface to this, but it's not currently actively marketed.
srvany.exe is sort of a hack but works reasonably well for most use cases, as long as you do not need any further interaction with the service manager interface in Windows than to start and stop your service.

  • Best way to control and read data from multiple instruments?

    Hello,
I'm building an application to test power supplies involving multiple pieces of equipment over a couple of different comm busses. The application will also send control instructions to some of the instruments, and read data from some of the instruments. The reading and control profiles will not run on the same schedule (variable length control steps, configurable read interval).
I was thinking of using a queued statemachine (producer/consumer) for the control profile and another to read the data, but I got concerned that there would be collisions between sending control commands and read commands to the same machine. Is there a suggested design pattern for implementing something like this?
Timing of the commands isn't critical down to the milisecond, but I need to collect reasonably accurate timestamps when the data is read. The same is true for the control commands.
Here are the instruments I'm going to use, if the are control, read, or both, and the communication method
    Instrument Funtions Comm Method
Power Supply Read data Communicates to PMBus Adapter
PMBus to USB Adapter Read data USB (Non-Visa)
    Switch control relays USB (VISA)
Power Dist. Unit read data/control outlets SNMP (Ethernet)
Electronic Load read data/control load GPIB (VISA)
Thermal Chamber read data/control temp Ethernet (VISA)
    Thanks,
    Simon

Hello, there is a template in LV called "Continuous measurement and Logging".
It can give you some idea how to properly decouple the "GUI Event handler" top loop (where your Event structure is) from the DAQ and other loops.
You do not need to totally replicate the above example, but you can find there nice tricks which can help you at certain points.
The second loop from the top is the "UI message loop". It handles the commands coming from the top loop, and regarding to the local state machine and other possible conditions and states, it can command the other loops below.
During normal run, the different instrument loops just do the data reading, but if you send a control command from the top loop to a certain instrument loop (use a separate Queue for every instrument loops), that loop will Dequeue the control command, execute it, and goes back to data reading mode (in data reading mode the loop Dequeu itself with a "data read" command automatically). In this way the control and data read modes happen in serial not in parallel which you want to avoid (but I think some instrument drivers can even handle parallel access, it will not happen in really parallel...).
In every instrument loop when you read a value, attach a TimeStamp to it, and send this timestamp/value couple to the DataLogging loop via a Queue. You can use a cluster including 3 items: Source(instrument)/timestamp/value. All the instrument loops can use the same "Data logging" Queue. In the Datalogging while loop, after Dequeue-ing, you can Unbundle the cluster and save the timestamp and data-value into the required channel (different channel for every instrument) of a TDMS file.
(Important: NEVER use 2 Event structures in the same top level "main" VI!)

  • Can I control a Windows PC from my Macbook Pro?

I have a Macbook Pro running Mavericks, and a Windows PC running XP.
I don't use the Windows machine much, it's just for tasks using older software, etc.  It's not connected to the network in the house because it runs XP which no longer receives security updates from MS.
What I would love to do is control the XP machine by using Remote Desktop from my Macbook, rather than having a separate keyboard, mouse and monitor connected to the XP machine.
I've no idea how to go about doing this if the XP machine isn't on the home network.
    Any suggestions?

You can use ARD to remote control a windows machines, ARD is built on VNC
You'll have to install a VNC server on the windows machine you want to access
You won't be able to use most of the ARD features as they are specific to mac
You'll be be able to see and control the desktop and that's about it
You can also find VNC /Remote Desktop apps in the iOS store that will allow remote desktop connection from iPad /iPhone,

  • Best Way to copy  i-Tunes library from a Mac to a  PC (Windows XP 2002 OS)?

Hopefully, I've chosen the correct forum for this topic? Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on how to import or copy songs from my iTunes library on my home computer (Macintosh Power G5) or my back-up Seagate 500Gb drive into the Dell computer that I use at work (Windows XP 2000) which has approximately 60Gb of unused disk space left. As far as I know, the Seagate drive was originally formatted for my Mac by a friend of a friend of a friend. Anyways, I cannot get my work computer to allow me to open the external drive so that I may drop & drag some songs into iTunes for Windows application that I recently downloaded as my default music player. The external drive is recognized on the computer but I cannot seem to locate it in order to open the drive's contents. I assume this is due to the inability of the Windows PC to read the drive' Macintosh formatting. Thus far I've been unable to locate another thread posted that deals specifically with this topic, but I would also greatly appreciate any assistance in locating said thread if it should exist!!!
Thank you in advance for any help you are able to provide!!!
JohnnyRocks (or would like to at work)

Since your external drive is formatted for Mac, this limits what you can do quite a bit. Perhaps the most practical thing to do would be to pack up your Mac and the external hard drive and take them to work, placing them within easy reach of the PC. You can then connect the Mac and the PC with an ordinary ethernet cable, enable Windows sharing on the Mac for your user account, and then set up a network between the two computers. You can use the Windows Run command to enter the IP of the Mac and access the contents of your Home directory.
In all likelihood, you still won't see the exernal drive from the PC, so you may have to copy a certain number of folders/files from the external drive to your Mac's internal drive in order to move them to the PC, then delete these temporary files from the Mac, move another group of folders, and so on until you've finished the transfer.

  • How can I control an iPad screen from a Mac

I have a friend who needs help using her iPad.  She lives 1500 miles away.  Is there any way I can control her iPad remotely from my iMac?

"Control" would be ideal, so I could take complete control of her iPad and then show her how to do things as if I was sitting there.  Think "Remote Access".
But "Share" would be almost as good.  At least then I could see her screen and be on the phone explaining what to do and watching her cursor movements.
The way we try to do it now is she holds up her iPad during an iChat (video) session, but the screen is too hard to see to be of any use, and helping her this way is virtually impossible.

  • Old Mac running Mountain Lion 'sees' Canon IP5000, new MacBook pro will not. No driver available from canon. Is there a way of transfering whatever is working from old mac to new?

I have two older macs running Mountain Lion that have been upgraded over the years from Leopard. They have continued to be able to print to a Canon IP5000 and use a driver that is fully functional. On the new MacBook Pro, the printer is found, but no driver is available for Mountain Lion from apple or Canon. Is there a way of getting the driver info from the old mac so that it will work on the new one?

Sorry, it says "New Event," not "New Entry." My bad.

  • How can I uninstall windows XP from my mac yosemite 10.10

I am trying to uninstall XP from my mac ( mid 2010) .
I dont see that option in my bootcamp it says remove Windows 7 .
Its not even showing install option for windows 7 , please let me know how to remove xp and install Windows 7.

    Two   methods:
    Boot Camp Assistant - after you deal with how Yosemite messed up the partition table for Windows;
Clone or backup and boot from the other drive - clone or TimeMachine - then erase and restore.
It modified and messed up Boot Camp partitions and needs some magic to get it to show again. PITA.  Due to how Yosemite handles Windows partition "Boot Camp" you probably have not been able to use it. You also can install Windows, then also use it in a VM and not have to dual boot unless you want - and you have the cpu resources and RAM for both OS's, after you have your new Boot Camp setup with Windows and working. Make sure to allocate enough, generally at least 60 if not 80GB of storage - and leave enough for Mac OS as well.
Paragon Software's CampTuneX can redistribute space between OS X (HFS+) and Windows "(NTFS) partitions too. And I know they are quick to update to Yosemite, don't know if they have helped in addressing the problem like you are seeing.
You should have asked on Windows support Community under "Boot Camp" btw.
    Boot Camp
Once you have Yosemite back to a single HFS+ partition (user partition anyway) you can then use BCA to create a Windows partition to install Windows 7.

  • Is there a way to control the sounds coming from a website in a tab or window for Firefox so that I can listen to music from a media player without hearing the website's sounds?

I want to listen to Youtube or music on Winamp, and also play an online game. But the sounds from the game are distracting and I want to turn them off or make it much quieter. Can I control sound output from a particular tab or windor?

    Jake,
    There are several options here.
I would suggest using your own code for datalogging. The datalogging you are referring to is primarily for debug, and one shot datalogs of front panel indicators (and controls?), not including graphs, etc.
If you go to the file functions, you will see a menu for datalogging. These functions will allow you to save your data, as you need it, simply, and in a compact format.
I recommend opening the datalog file, doing all your file operations, and closing the file before the program is complete. There are several examples of this in the examples database.
    Good luck

  • Control F Windows- similar feature with Mac?

    Hello,
When I wanted to find any word on a Word doc or browser, with Windows I would use Control F. Is there a similar feature with the Mac?
Loving the new Mac Book Pro!
    Thank you!

You will find that many Windows keyboard shortcuts are copies of the older Mac ones, but substituted the control for our command and Alt for our Option which is now sometimes referred to as Alt as well.
There are exceptions however, usually the Mac ones are more mnemonic such as cmd Q for Quit rather than the Alt F4 of Windows.
Also you will see a recent summary of the easy to remember Mac keyboards for accented non-English characters.
There are summaries of some but not all keyboard shortcuts either under the Help menu or in Help itself, or on Apple's website in Support.
