A "freeze " option in the library filters ?

1 My problem :
When I choose the "no keyword" filter, I get the correct pics selected, BUT as soon as I enter ONE keyword , the pic disapears from the grid.
Normal , it has now one keyword
I would like it to stay , the time to enter other keywords
2 My proposed solution: add a "freeze" icon
When it is selected, the pics stay on the grid , the filter is refreshed only if the "freeze" icon is shut down , or if we change the grid (other filter, other folder etc...)
It would be also useful when I try to fine tune the stars (select above 2 stars for instance) and the selection would freeze so I can compare the pics even if I upgrade ou downgrade certain pics.
3 There is a loop around , go through the quick collection, but it is not very practical, just have to type
ctrl maj B,G, ctrl A, ctrl B, ctrl D,
for : clear quick collection, grid, select all, put in quick collection, select none ...and start to work
I have written it on the mirror of my bathroom, so I can recite it by heart every morning while brushing my teeth!!
What do you think about that idea?

Another quick workaround would be to add a single keyword to all your "no keywords" or stars at one time that would be easy to find at the top of the alphabetical keyword list (like 1 aaa...) and work from there. Then delete it when all your keywords are assigned. Not as elegant as your solution but it might avoid those worried posts to the forum from people who can't figure out why Collections aren't working right when the "freeze" button has been unknowingly selected.

Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts or Users & Groups on 10.7) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

The backup to disk option was removed as of iTunes 10.4. If you want to back up your tracks to a CD, you can as a workaround put the tracks in a playlist and then use the Burn Playlist to Disk command and select a data disk as the format. If you want to back up your tracks to a DVD now, you'll need to use other software. Unless your library is pretty small, though, it's probably a lot more effective to just copy the entire iTunes folder to an external hard drive or USB flash drive.

Show file name in the library module

In Lightroom 2.7. there was the option in the library module to show the file name of the photograph in the area under the photograph. In Lightroom 3 I can not find this option anymore. Can anybody help me to find it ?

Info is not available in LR3. You could use the info overlay.

Searching using the Library Filter

I have two questions:
1: When I did a search for "lark", I found meadow lark, horned lark, and lark sparrow images. But, it also brought up a thousand "Clarks" nutcrackers. What is the command to bring up only images that exactly match the keyword (lark)?
2: It is very apparent that LR is capable of doing some very sophisitcated searchs using the Library Filters, but where do you find detailed descriptions of this information? (lacking a manual or any sort of context sensitive help menu)

Photosmart Essential 3.5 - Can't get all photos into the Library

I'm trying to create a CD label to print on a CD on my HP C5580 using a picture from my Library. But when I go to my Library, only pictures through 2013 are there, and not all of those are there. I've tried to add/update folders from my Pictures file on my computer but it doesn't allow me to, either because the folder is grayed out or there isn't any pictures in it. When I select the "Folder" option in the library, the recent folders show up with the number of pictures in ( ) after it, but again, I can't select the folder. I tried importing a picture from a disc and the file shows up, but with no picture. Is there a way to get those missing pictures in my library? And if not, is there any other HP software that I can create a CD label to print on a CD, on my HP C5580 printer.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Photosmart Essential 3.5 which didn't help.

I read several other blogs and it looks like this problem has been going for several years and HP doesn't have a solution. Many on the blogs suggested trying Sure Thing Disc Labeler. So I went to their site and downloaded the 15 day free trial and it worked like a charm. I used one of their templates for designing my CD. I was able to use a current picture from my Pictures file and used it. When it came time to print, I had to select Manual to put in some of the parameters for the C5580, but it printed perfectly on the disc.
I'm planning to purchase the Sure Thing Disc Labeler 6 for $29.95, so I can fully use my HP C5580. Before you get rid of your HP C5580, try Sure Thing Disc Labeler.

In terms of searching i have searched for photos on my finder. However, none of the photos that appear are from my iPhoto Library.

Search for any file with "ThumbJPGSegment" in the name. First to locate your library on the hard drive launch iPhoto with the Option key held down so you get this window:
Your library should be displayed in the window and it's location displayed below the window when clicked on.
If that fails to locate your library download and run Find Any File to search for a file named "ThumbJPGSegment.data" which is a file common to all versions of iPhoto libraries.
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If there's a library hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it.
Once you find the library you can try to repair if it doesn't open as it should by trying this:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

My keyboard freezes after using the option key... what gives?

I have a 17" MacBookPro with OSX 10.6.8
The problem: My keyboard key freeze after using the " option key" in Photoshop or when downloading a file using the option key.
I can usually use it 2 or 3 times before it makes a chirping cricket like sound… then my keys freeze up.? The only way to correct it is to restart.
Anyone else have or had this issue? it's frustrating. What's the deal?

(When I lived not far from Lenovo's Canadian service center and wanted to bring in a ThinkPad for warranty repair they said that would be OK with them but my unit would be put on a queue the same as if I'd shipped it in. They simply didn't offer walk-in, while you wait service.)
In the interim it may or may not be possible to reattach the key, even just temporarily, depending on whether it wasn't put on properly at the factory or if it's physically broken in some way. Or you could use an external keyboard until Lenovo sends you a replacement, etc.
I've just call the local service center, he told me that he can not repair individual key, they can just replace the whole keyboard..... How bad luck I am!!!

Apple tv movies in the library not giving me a rental option?

some apple tv movies in the library are giving me a rental option whereas others are not. any ideas why? I've searched for diary of a wimpy kid rodrick rules....I find it and select it....and the only three buttons available are preview, wishlist and more. I selected a random 6 other movies and 3 have a rent option and 3 don't. is whether you can rent a movie something to do with your location? i'm in ireland. thanks.

It probably has more to do with the politics played by the movie studios.
Don't forget you can also switch your settings between high-definition and standard definition, you may find that the movie is available to rent in an alternative format.

Can't open iPhoto. I don't get an error message. When I launch the application it just hangs and the pointer just spins. I pressed option apple and rebuilt the library and thumbnails and it's still not working. Do I need to re-install?

If I do need to re-install how do I do this? I saved a back up of my iphoto library. Does this mean my photos are safe if I re-install. Help is much appreciated!

If you're getting a hang like this at opening
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

...I also tried throwing Recent Files, in the past It solved the problem ,not this time ...

This recently happened to me. I am a novice, but it seemed like that project got corrupted some how.
I deleted it.
Went to time machine and picked it up again when I knew it was working ok.
I lost a few hours of work, but not the entire project.
Once I had the project back from time machine, it worked fine (but like I said, I lost a little bit of work).

Aperture crashed on me, then it did a rebuild but now when I try to open it all I get is the message: Warning.There was an error opening the database for the library "/Users/[Folder name]/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary".Only option is to press 'Quit'

I'd be grateful for any suggestions as to how I can re-open Aperture again. It has been increasingly flaky recently and this isn't the first time it has done a rebuild but is the first time it has failed to start up. Most of my photos are referenced. Many thanks for any help you can give.

You can try opening the old (problem) library by launching Aperture into Library First Aid mode and choosing to Repair (first option) or Rebuild the library. Before doing this, make a backup copy of the old library, since both Repair or Rebuild will write changes to the library database.
Repair is the faster and less drastic option, so try that first: After backing up your library, hold down both the Option and Command keys while dragging and dropping the problem library on the Aperture icon. The Photo Library First Aid window appears. Select Repair Database, then click Repair. After some time Aperture should open the library, if possible.
If that fails launch Aperture back into Library First Aid and select Rebuild Database. Depending on the size of your library this operation could take some time, up to several hours for a very large library. When the main window appears you may have some extra Recovered folders/projects. This operation rebuilds the library from scratch and is usually successful at reviving problem libraries.

Dont know if this is a new occurrence or very many details but try changing "permissions".
Navigate to the following folder: /Users/[user name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom
Highlight the Lightroom folder and chose File > Get Information
Under Sharing & Permission, verify that your have Read & Write Privileges. If not, click the padlock icon at the lower right, enter your password when prompted, then click the Read only entry and select Read & Write.

Filtering the library by collection status

I've been using LR for adjusting photos for about 6-8 years now, but have just recently gotten time to start better organizing my stuff. I have about 40,000 images that mostly have keywords and descriptive file names, but are generally without ratings, color labels and are mostly not in collections. I must admit that there's a lot of junk in there (duplicates, mostly) that I have to purge. I can probably work it down to 10,000 images.
In addition to putting ratings and labels on things, I want to sort them into collections, but that task would be easier if I knew which images were NOT in collections so I could concentrate on them and work that set down. I don't see a way to set up smart collections to show images that are not in a collection. Looking through help it appears that the smart collection criteria can be selected from whatever text selection criteria are available, and I don't see inclusion in a collection as one of them. I also don't see collection status as one of the metadata items that could be used to filter things.
In a previous thread from 2007 I found the following workaround:
Clear the quick collection and set it to the target collection.
In the library view, select all the collections. Select all the photos.
Go to the catalog and view all photos.
In the Edit menu, click on "invert selection".
That selects all the images not in a collection. Pressing B puts them in the quick collection.
The only problem with this is that when you select an image from the quick collection and place it in a collection the image remains in the quick collection. In a smart collection filtered by collection status (not in a collection) it would disappear from the smart collection when it goes into a collection. So it would be much nicer if there were a way to filter for "not in a collection" for a smart collection or even in a metadata filter.
The above workaround does work, but you will have to refresh the quick collection whenever you lose track of which images you have placed into a collection.
Of course, the best solution would be not to get into my position in the first place. Always dump the junk out of the catalog and place all the keepers in appropriate collections. It never hurts to have multiple ways of finding something.

I guess I missed the selection source --> collections in the new smart collection dialog box.
I tried it out and it almost worked the first time. The number of images shown with all the collections selected plus the number of images listed in the "Not in a collection" smart collection didn't add up to the total number of images. The first thing I had to do was to clear the quick collection, which isn't listed with the collections, but is counted by the filter. That came closer, but didn't quite get them all. The next thing I did was to change the filter criterion to "A E I O U a e i o u 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9" since the filter appears to be case sensitive.
Now it works fine. Thanks for the new smart collection filter.
