A fresh start

Ive been a new mac user since last summer, and in that time ive been learning all things mac.
now i feel comfortable with what i am doing i feel like i want to do a fresh install of OSX Tiger and start again, because there are things i would like to do differently (programs ive installed etc etc) and also it would be a good experience into doing an install myself.
a few things i would like to ask first though.
ive got my 2 install discs that came with my imac, do i just insert that and follow instructions....do i need any serial numbers for osx....
i have backed up all my important data to my external lacie hdd, and this also is where i store my itunes music.
my itunes library is my most important back up for me (ive had 2 instances where ive lost my library and had to manually re-import all my music from my itunes folder (was not fun indeed)).
now, am i right in guessing that if i go file>export library this will save the details of all my music, so when ive finished my re-install, i go file>import, and it will do the rest? ....
also, i have installed bootcamp, and have my partiton for XP. would a reinstall automatically delete this partion, or am i best to use bootcamp to get rid of the partition first?
thats really it, unless theres other things i should know...
oh, and 1 other question, how long roughly would it take??
cheers in advance
Jon

First off, erasing your system, which I think is your intention, is not recommended.
You want to backup your system TWICE. There have been instances where installation of software while the external drive is connected causes the external drive to lose data. So you want to make sure that doesn't happen, as the firmware of the drive may not be sufficient to save you. Also, the drive could fail at anytime, as is true with any drive.
And you want to make sure you have at two copies of your music.
If the purpose is simply to remove your Boot Camp partition follow Apple's instructions to do that, after backing up your data twice.
By the way, there is no such thing as a "fresh install". Rather you have these options for installation:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614
The only time you want to erase your system is to change the partitioning of it which is usually not necessary with Boot Camp removal, though can happen by accident, or to eliminate the possibility for any hardware related issues by seeing if an included system only installation causes issues with your computer without third party peripherals, drivers or applications.

  • How to get a fresh start to successfully install creative cloud for mac?

I start with install creative cloud for download trials, however, since I'm in China, the creative cloud somehow automatically defaults and installs the software in Chinese version(for example, there is no way that I can choose the language of premiere, then it already been installed in my mac system in Chinese). I thought that perhaps it's because my account is set in China, then I try to uninstall all the trials, and try to delete creative cloud from my mac ios platform, but because I'm not familiar with the IOS platform, I think I didn't delete the creative cloud properly, after that, even I successfully install the English version of PRE, the creative cloud couldn't work. And I couldn't open AE v12.0 with mac IOS v10.9.4 unless upgrade AE to v12.0.1, and since the creative cloud wouldn't work, the adobe application manager is also not working. When I try to open application manager it shows this(even though the creative cloud is already installed):
And I download creative cloud again from the URL, try to install, after that, creative cloud is running, but it shows still damaged.
So all in all, how could I fix this crisis circle?
How could my IOS system get a fresh start to install the creative cloud, it's there some files that I suppose to delete or what? Please try to give me a clear instruction with this, there are similar problems with people around me as well, I want to help them, too.
And also what is the difference between adobe application manager and creative cloud?
Look forward to your reply, thanks.

  • I want to reset all networking on my Macbook Pro with 10.5.6 to fresh start

I installed Log Me In on my Macbook Pro, and now I can't see the other PCs on my network, they don't show in my shared area in Finder, and iTunes is having a hard time to find my music on the network. I tried with both wired and wireless. I uninstalled Log Me In, but it didn't help.
I'd like to reset all the networking to the default fresh start. I think this will help. Does anyone know how I do this?
I have a Linksys wireless router and several PCs on the network, I have never had a problem with networking before with my Mac.

Remove the following if they exist from the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ folder:
    1. com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    2. preferences.plist
    3. com.apple.smb.server.plist
    Restart the computer.

  • I want to reload my mac to a fresh start (like when I bought it)

My laptop has been going extremely slow, and is running out of space. It says I have 1 gig of HD left, when I have barely anything on it and the capacity is 160gigs. Also my searchlight bar doesnt work, and i'm regularly having to force quit apps.
So I would like to restore my computer to a fresh start. How can I do that without keeping anything on my harddrive?
    Thanks!

    Try this:
    Reinstalling Lion Without the Installer
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Refreshing or starting iphoto from Fresh start Help

I have just backed up and sorted out my iphoto and all Pictures ( exported etc and stored in External HDD ) so I have no Photos on my Computer at all now .
However when I look at the iphoto library icon in my pictures file it indicates it is 18.55 GB , but the Iphoto program has no events and no photo's in , also I tried importing but as expected says no photo's ( as on external Hdd )
So how can I refresh this or delete the 18.55GB ( if there is anything there ) so I can start iphoto from a fresh start .
    Thanks Mark

Do you want to resurrect your library or get rid of it? If it's the latter follow Niel's suggestion. That will remove all of the image files from your HD and let iPhoto create a new library the next time it's launched.
If you want to resurrect the library and try to recover your keywords, albums, etc. try the following in order as needed:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
2 - rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. Report back on how long it took and how many photos you have in the library so we can give other users an idea of how long it may take.
3 - start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Reorganize/Rearrange old Project/Media files for fresh start: Newbie 101

I’m just getting seriously again into FCP learning curve, know that organization is vital, and have set Settings/Preferences correctly for fresh start. I say “fresh” because awhile back I started but was not properly organized and was then interrupted (HD went belly up) before getting far other than working on a single project. ALL of those various files now sit in a FCP Media folder within another folder (thus at a second level) full of recovered files from the earlier crashed and meanwhile replaced external hard disk. My question is how do I regroup/divide/move this material so that it’s properly awaiting further work from the new FCP Projects folder on my local disk and the new FCP Media folder on one of my my externals. At present, to repeat and perhaps to clarify, EVERYTHING of this old material now sits within the single FCP Media folder on the second level of one of my externals. I could, of course, just trash everything and avoid the present quandary, but I’d rather keep it but place everything properly for the next time around when I can work with it correctly. I imagine some or all of the work done earlier may have been OK, though improperly placed for workflow. Thanks for any guidance. I’m hesitant because I don’t want to make any further mistakes as I learn and start again. I’m sure this is a simple situation for those who know what they’re doing.

Sorry. Of course you're right. Think I should resend, rewrite?
Still need some guidance on this simple problem.

  • 25 years old, $100,000 dollars in debt, and I need a fresh start....

Hello Everyone, I've been on this forum for quite awhile.  Over the past 5 years I used information learned on here to build and improve my credit score and obtain numberous credit cards.  I got very good at calling the infamous "backdoor numbers" and almost was always successfull at obtaining new credit or being granted CLI's. After going through a life crisis last year here is where I am sitting right now: 25 year old full-time waiter. (I make about $3500 in cash per month)$30,000 Auto Loan$10,000 Student Loans$10,000 owed to an Auto Insurance Company due to Subrogation$33,000 Credit Card Debt$4,400 Outstanding University Tuition Bill$5,000 Medical Bills~$92,000 Total Debt I have not been able to make any payments at all on several of the cards.  Multiple >120 day late payment status being reported on them.  The minumum payment on 3 of my cards EACH is over $1000 now.  They are probably getting close to being charged off.  I say this because my credit is already pretty much ruined so I see bankruptcy as the beginning of a fresh start. I'm 99% certain I need to file for Chapter 7.  I'm going to surrender my car, drive something cheap and start fresh.  I have totally screwed up my life financially up to this point and I very much want to get back in school so I can have a career and a future.  I realize that the student loan debt is not eligible for bankruptcy but I'm curious about the tution bill I have being as I owe it directly to the university and it is not technically a loan. Any advice is greatly appreciated.  I'm wondering what my recovery process will look like after all this...

I would contact the university and see what can be done to resolve the debt so you can continue with school. I would also agree with Krielly and not bother with wondering about rebuilding. You will rebuild, and more than likely it will come very easily. Consultations for bankruptcies are free, so you should get in with a lawyer asap. It sounds like yours may be simple (no asset Chp 7, perhaps?) and hopefully if you get on the ball (and stay on it) and there are no hiccups along the way, you'll be discharged by the end of this year/early next year.

  • CORESERVICESD takes 90%-100% CPU about 5 minutes after every fresh start

So, coreservicesd process takes 90-100% cpu after a fresh start. It doesn't start immediately after login but about 3-5 minutes after, and it happens +every time+ i start my computer and it lasts about 10 minutes or so before it stops eating the cpu.
I haven't figured out any way to stop this behavior. I've reset smc, emptyed /Library/Caches, clean installed Snow Leopard (without restoring from Time Machine backup) but nothing seems to help.
Does anyone here know what to do in my situation or does anyone have any new ideas what should I try to do? I appreciate every response.

OK folks, problem solved. At least mine is. No coreservcesd eating cpu anymore! Hurray! This is the second time I boot and the computer seems to run perfectly. If the coreservicesd problem comes back I'll report here.
    So, what did I do:
    1. Changed from 64 bit kernel + extensions to 32 bit.
    2. Uninstalled SpiceRack and MozyHome Backup preference panes.
    3. Repaired Premissions
    4. Cleaned User Cache
    5. Cleaned System Cache
    6. Cleaned All Users Cache
    7. Rebuilt Launch Services
    8. Forced Empty Trash
    9. Removed Corrupt Preferences
    10. Updated Prebindings
    11. Reindexed Spotlight
    12. Cleaned Archived Logs
    13. Cleaned All Logs
    14. Flushed DNS Cache
    15. Removed .DS_Store Files
    16. Cleaned All Browser Caches
    17. Updated Whatis Database
    18. Updated Locate Database
    19. Cleaned Font Caches
    20. Booted from SL install dvd and ran Disk Utility's repaid disk & repair premissions.
After these operations my mac runs faster and all errors in the Console log are gone! All steps (except 1, 2 and 20) can be preformed with different maintenance apps. I used an app called MainMenu.

  • Fresh start on Lion?

It seems like my computer has been buggy–Safari especially often freezes or reloads all my tabs, despite no other applications running and adequate hardware specs.
I'm wondering if it's possible to make a fresh start to see if the bugs get worked out (that is, reinstall all apps).
I use Time Machine, and last week restarted and reinstalled from my latest Time Machine image, but I the same problems seem to be persisting. I'm wondering if there's a way to keep all my data, but to reinstall the system without bringing the bugs along.
    Thanks for your help!!

  • Fresh Start Mac Mail

Mac Mail 6.6.  I had several email accounts hosted by third party servers.
I manage all the email accounts with Mac Mail. It has become a mess.
I've now consolidated all my email accounts with one server and I'd like
to start fresh. I want to delete all Mac Mail accounts and emails and
then re-enter accounts with new settings. Any help about the best approach
    is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Lenny.

    Mail/Preferences/Accounts - delete them there.

  • Want a fresh start - please help.

I've been dealing with an issue on my iMac for a while now and just want to give up and start fresh.
If interested here is my previous thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5130989?start=0&tstart=0
How do I delete my HD and start fresh?  I've tried to delete it by booting into Recovery (command+R) and in Disk Utility erasing the SSD HD - but I can't it says that I have Macintosh HD mounted.  Do I need to erase Macintosh HD first or unmount it?  Once I do delete/erase the entire thing - how do I reinstall Mountain Lion (I don't have any discs - I bought my Mac used - but did purchase the Mountain Lion upgrade on my account)?
    Thanks in advance.

This free progam will make a bootable USB Flash drive and do the work for you.

  • Install new OS X and wipe computer clean (fresh start)?

I would like to install the newest OS X and basically start my computer over from scratch. I can back up all my needed files and programs on an external. Where do I go from there? Do I need my original start-up disk?

Your going to need one of your original disks to intall the iLife suite. The stand alone Snow Leopard retail copy does not come with iLife.

  • Mail doesn't display mails in Inbox after fresh start

After starting my MBP, and on first startup of Mail, I do not see my existing mails within the inbox.
To resolve this issue, I can either:
    1) restart Mail
    2) switch to an existing mail subfolder and then back to the main inbox.
After either option I see my old mails displayed.
    Any idea why this happens?
It started after upgrading to SL, never had this issue under 10.5. before.
    Thanks

It gets Mail to rebuild the index for the selected mailbox. If it's an IMAP account, Mail will refresh all the messages from the IMAP server. If it's a PoP account, Mail just reindexes.

  • FRESH START

On an iBook PowerPC G4 (3.3) we have 3 users.
We all use OS 10.3.9 and iPhoto 4.0.3 (4H2) .
One of the users [me] has made a mess of iPhoto Library etc, probably through not being aware of the iPhoto Help Rule "Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder
If you move, delete, rename, or otherwise tamper with files or folders in the iPhoto Library folder, you may be unable to see your pictures in iPhoto."
I have been through the usual sequence of 'Repair Permissions' on Disk Utility and the 'daily/weekly/monthly' kron clean-up using Terminal and then RESTART iBook - all with no improvement.
How can I start afresh with iPhoto - I do not mind trashing the few photos I have there?
The important thing is that I must not mess up iPhoto used by the other 2 users, who have many photos.
How can I do this without spoiling their iPhoto Libraries?
I have looked through iPhoto Help? but cannot find the answer.

I assume by your description that each user has his (or her) own user account to which they must log into to have access to their personal photo library. If that's not the case, do not proceed.
Log into your account. Go to your user's Pictures folder and drag the "iPhoto Library" folder to the trash. Go to your user's Library >Preferences folder, find the file named "com.apple.iPhoto.plist" and drag it to the trash, as well.
Start iPhoto and follow the prompts.
