A frustrating problem I'm having importing PSD files into ID CS3

I am doing some page layouts for ads for magazines, and I've had a frustrating problem with Photoshop and InDesign CS3 for the longest time. Basically, I want to drag the PSD files we have already made for our products into my layout and use them as-is, but when I do so, they display as garbled ugly things in my InDesign CS3 layout, no matter what. The fix is for me to load the PSD, copy the contents, make a new file, paste the contents of the last other file, and save it as a new PSD file -- then things will work great. But this is a big pain in the buttocks and I'd like to fix the problem and eliminate this step.

Basically, the image on the left shows the garbled image which has been dragged into the layout. It's just a normal PSD, single layer, but perhaps saved with some incompatibilty such as not being saved in "maximum compatibility mode" or having been saved with a color file attached. The pic on the right shows the correct image that I have manually resaved and imported.
Can anyone help me figure out why all of my PSD files are being garbled when I drag them into InDesign?

I just did a test there and the Maximise Compatibility had minimal effect (ironically) on how the image looks in InDesign CS3 or in InDesign CS5
However, I did get a warning that the image was saved witout Maximise compatibility and it may have an effect on performance, nothing else.
Perhaps the other people are not on the same version of photoshop as you are, perhaps run the adobe updater and make sure  you're all on the same version update for both apps.
Trashing preferences might clear up your photoshop images - hold down the three modifier keys bottom left corner of the keyboard when starting photoshop (sorry Peter I don't remember the Mac Combo )
Really hard to know why this is happening though.

    Welcome to the forum.
    The RGB and 8-bit take care of two possible causes, so thanks for getting those out of the way early on.
    Does the PSD file contain Layers? Are any of them mostly Transparent, with just a few pixels, such as a small logo? Those have created issues.
    What is the exact version of CS4, that you are running? Seems that there WAS an issue with PSD's in an earlier version, and that a later update fixed that.
    There is another element with PSD's, that has caused issues, but my feeble mind is suddenly blank on what that was about. Seems that Colin Brougham commented on it not that long ago. I'll see if I can drege up one of those threads, but you might aslo want to do a Search on "PrPro" and "PSD," though the forum Search might still be broken. Maybe Google, and also look for replies from Colin. I'll do the same too. IIRC, one had to Open the offending PSD in PS, and just do a Save_As with a short file name, and a short Path (not buried deeply inside a sub-folder structure), and all was good, but do not recall any other details at the moment. I would also eliminate any spaces in the new file name, just to eliminate any issue there - use the _ like in the old DOS days, though do not think that one had to adhere to the old 8.3 structure.

  • Importing psd files into AN

    I have been using Edge Preview since the beginning. last time I used the app was 4 months ago. Now I see the newer version 1.0 is out. I got quite used to the older previews but it's been 4 months so I need a refresher course. While I do that and re familiarize myself please correct me if I'm wrong but I could have sworn that the older Edge previews allowed you to import .psd files.
    Am I right?

  • Why can I not import PSD files into Adobe?

    I downloaded a PSD opener to validate if the files could open and they were able to open successfully. Could it be the PSD file, I'm trying to open was save on a MAC computer, which connect link with Windows....
    Please help , small business owner and need to start printing my marketing material.

    In the Control Panel under Appearance and Personalization>Folder Options, make sure Hide extensions for known file types is unchecked
    Then right click on one of the psd files, choose Properties>General and paste a screenshot of what you see in that dialog.

  • Importing VOB files into PP CS3

    I have looked at numerous forum notes on this problem with PP and I've about come to the conclusion that the easiest thing might be to just buy a copy of Premiere Elements. I understand Premiere Elements will import VOBs and convert them to AVI. Some of the other solutions require several pieces of software, multiple steps, etc sometimes with limited successs.
    My most recent attempt (just renaming the VOB file to MPG) resulted in good quality video with no audio. Is the primary reason for loss of audio the AC3 Dolby? Will copying the ad2mcac3dec.dll file from the Encore CS3 directory to the PP CS3 root directory really solve that problem? Is that it? That would be nice but somehow I'm a little skeptical. Are there other reasons for losing the audio when you just rename the VOB file to MPG?

  • Importing CAD files into Illustrator CS3 - does'nt scale dashed lines

    In CS2 you could import a CAD file and it would scale dashed lines.
    In CS3, Illustrator no longer does this. It scales the stroke weight, but does not recognize the dashed line information.
    Is there a solution to this?

    You can expand dashed lines first and then scale them.
    Then you will get a whole bunch of vector objects, one for each dash.
    I am not very familiar with CAD, but I know that imported CAD files are sometimes fiendishly difficult to edit because vector lines are often in small pieces that don't join up properly.
    So I reckon Expand on all lines and then judicious Unite in Pathfinder would probably be the best way of going about things. Unite makes Compounds of closed paths so you have to be careful, otherwise you might get a huge file that won't print without splitting.
    But remember that once you've expanded the lines you won't be able to edit their weight.

  • Importing psd files into FCP

    Every time I create a layered file in photoshop with fx like bevel and imboss, gradient overlay, inner glow etc, and import it into FCP, it shows up as a layered file (sequence) but does not show any of the fx (eg. text is plain white when it should be blue, no bevel and emboss just completely flat, no drop shadow, nothing). Can somebody help me? Pleeeeeease!

    You need to Rasterize text elements and Layer Effects such as Bevel, Emboss and Shadows in Photoshop, before you import them to FCP.

  • Importing Photoshop files into Illustrator CS3

    I'm running into a problem in Illustrator CS3 when I try and import a native CS3 Photoshop file. If I try and place the file as a linked file I get an application error stating that there was insufficient virtual memory. And, if I select cancel I get a run time error and Illustrator crashes.
    If I try and embed the file I get the same results. It doesn't seem to matter what the file size is and .tif's work just fine up to huge sizes 100Mb+.
    As to the system I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate (x64) 8Gb of ram, two SCSI drives with virtual ram assigned to both so memory issues, well, shouldn't be issues.
    Anyone got any ideas?

    Ok, so ADOBE needs to get up off their a$$e$ and address this problem, However some of you guys make it sound like its the end of the world... Here's a way to go around it in the meantime- at least this is how my PC is reacting (you might not be as lucky, but worth a try)
    After getting my "insufficient virtual memory" error, try closing Illustrator down and then open the file from the OS window (not from within illustrator or browse)by double-clicking the file you'll automatically open Illustrator,it might take a couple of tries but after my second attempt it opened my file (took a little long) and I got a different error message "there was an error with the embeded file what do you want to do - replace file, correct file, ignore file, cancel" (msg not verbatim but close - not at my comp right now)
    Then just ignore the files delete the links (they'll show up as blank boxes) If your just using those embedded psd's for previewing purposes you'll just have to save a flattened tiff everytime you make a change and keep saving over that same tiff so illustrator will automatically update it to you illustrator file.

  • Importing PSD files create a black line to the right of some images

    I am importing PSD files into Framemaker 11 and they keep giving me a vertical line on the right side of some images. I already know that other image file formats don't cause this, but I prefer the practicality of PSD files and not having to deal with duplicate files of the same image. I figured that native Adobe files that are supposed to be cross platform compatible should work without any issues. I get lines when converting to PDF documents and when I print them out also. I’m getting ready to publish our catalog and would like to prevent the printer from cleaning them up again.  Does anyone know how to fix it or if Adobe is currently addressing this issue ? Who can I contact to let them know about the issue, since it has been around from the time Frame started accepting PSD files?

    This is gonna sound really crazy, but this happened to me a couple of years ago. Below is the answer....hope it helps for you!
    Found the answer to this in the framers digest mailout (framers Digest, Vol 71, Issue 9). Hopefully it wll help you too.
    I am not sure about the Illustrator files, but for Photoshop, resize your images so that the last number is an even number. (example: change 3.25 to 3.24)

  • Problem with ghosted lines in PSD files

    Hi,
    When I import PSD files into a DVCPRO HD 720p timeline I see a faint gray box around titles. I'm saving out as 8 bit (because 16 bit won't work) over a transparent background. aspect ratio is fine and I turn off maximize compatibility to increase quality. Very strange.

    Yeah, I don’t think it’s the .psd file format… Try the .tiff Zeb suggested though.
    BTW I’m not sure “Maximize Compatibility” has much, if anything, to do with quality. More to do with file size and, well, compatibility…
    When saving a file with maximum compatibility, a full-size, full-resolution flattened version is saved along with the actual Photoshop (.psd) file. The flattened version ensures that other programs that can use the Photoshop format show the image properly.
    Please post back if you find a solution. I'm curious...
    EDIT Oh, could this be a render "thing"? And, are you viewing this on an external NTSC monitor?? It is an RGB file right???

  • Can no longer import Word files into InDesign

    For many months I have been importing Word files into InDesign CS3 (Mac OSX 10.4.11) with no trouble, but I started having a problem yesterday.
    When importing a 17-page Word file with 16 footnotes, I got none of the text and only the footnote numbers. This is what I get in InDesign:

    These are the things I've tried already: restarting, deleting preferences, changing the import options, using CS2, importing someone else's Word file, importing a Word file that I imported successfully a couple of months ago. None of this works.
    It has been suggested that I save the Word file as rtf, but since I have 200 files to import and I'm using Word's character styles for italics, bold, small caps, etc., I'd rather try to fix this problem.

    I am using indesign CS2 and i'm trying to import a Word document into a new chapter for a book i'm laying out. it's about 30 pages, but there are at least 80 foot notes. i'm able to get about 1/2 of the document with the footnotes to flow correctly, then EVERYTHING disappears. the only way i've been able to get the remaining text to appear is by adding characters to the text. i'll hit "vvvvvvvvvvvv" a bunch of times and "magically" a little chunk of text and it's footnotes appears. then the ole disappearing act happens. so i do it again. i'm able to get all the text to appear finally, but when i delete the "vvvvvvvvvv" from the places i inserted them, the text disappears again. i have no idea why this is happening or how to fix it. any ideas?

  • Importing Photoshop files into premiere pro CS6 issues

    I recently re-installed Premiere Pro CS6 on my work computer (i changed from a HDD to an SSD). Ever since I did this I am having an issue importing .PSD files into Premiere.
    I try and import a photoshop file. The importer window comes up. The progress bar starts to move, then pauses and the Importer says 'Not Responding'. After a few seconds it comes back and throws up the following error:
    Error message - 'The importer reported a generic error'
    All projects i previously worked on that had .PSD files in them are now reporting these files as 'Media Offline' meaning I have to replace them with .PNG files which is really annoying.
    Any ideas what might be happening? The files I am trying to import are RGB .PSD's. They worked previously without any issues.
    I have Premiere Pro Version 6.0.5 (001 (MC: 264587))
    running on a Windows 7 machine with Service Pack 1, 64 bit OS, 16GB Ram and Intel Core i7-2600

    Yes, MXF should play perfectly in PP CS6, but if you can't work this out at this point, you may wrap your MXF video to something intermediate. as a matter of face, Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 seems to work fine if you import your MXF clips directly from a camera or camcorder, but if have already copied MXF recordings your HDD or you downloaded them from somewhere else, the import error may occur.
    So i suggest you convert the MXF footage to something mezzanine we would recommend DNxHD.mov (if you are on a PC) or Apple ProRes .mov (if on a mac). those two intermediate codecs are good mezzanine codecs that handle recompression well and standup well in other areas of post-production (color grading, graphics, compositing, etc,).     As I'm very in exprienced, Ive tried to merge the layers in the psd file and then use Export -> 'Path to Illustrator', however when I open the newly created .ai file, it open a dialog box called 'Convert to Artboards' and whatever option i choose (either Legacy Artboard or Crop Area(s)' my new illustrator file seems to be empty.

       •   Opening PSD files into Illustrator
    1.  Turn on your computer and launch the Illustrator program.
    2.  Open a new document by clicking File>New in Illustrator’s menu bar.
    3.  To open your Photoshop document, go to File>Open and then select the document you want to open when prompted.
       •   Placing PSD files into Illustrator (Editable)
    This method is ideal if you wish to incorporate a Photoshop document within an existing Illustrator document which can then make the PSD file editable within Illustrator.
    1. Launch the Illustrator program, select File>Place
    2. Locate the PSD file you want to import and click “Place”. Make sure the “Link” option is not selected.
    Placing or opening an unlinked Photoshop file will prompt a dialog box with options, choose the most appropriate option and then click “OK”.
    • Convert Layers to Objects: This option will convert the Photoshop layers into Illustrator objects to be able preserve masks, transparency and blending modes.                  
                                 • Flatten Layers to a Single Object: This option will flatten all the Photoshop layers into a single layer to preserve the look and appearance of the image; however individual Photoshop layers will no longer be editable.
       •   Placing PSD files into Illustrator (Not Editable)

    **The one time it did not work for me and appeared black was because of shadows (hue/saturation adjustment layer). So I compared the old .psd file, that converted fine, to the current one I was trying got send. One of the differences was the introduction of shadows by duplicating the fonts and image shapes, then merging them to a single image with hue/saturation adjustments. When adjusting the hue/saturation, it appears in a separate layer that was locked to next to image that was just produced. Some reason that was the bug that kept Illustrator from placing the .psd file in Illustrator. The solution was to merge the hue/saturation layer with the image layer. Now it’s back to normal.
    Hope this save you some time.

    If I import a layered PSD file, some part the color of the lower layer is shown at the edge of objects or shadows. Instead, if I crop each layers first and import them, there's no problem.

    How was the original art created? Was the original RGB or CMYK? What is the resolution of the Photoshop file? Flash only works well with RGB and 72 pixel per inch resolution. If your original art is not set this way, then Flash will attempt to convert it as it imports it. Flash uses the sRGB color space. You'll get the best color translation if your Photoshop file is using this color preference.

    Just wanted to correct something you said, simply because beginners are reading these forums and may get confused.
    You can not convert any image into an html file. An html file is simply a text file that uses tags that can point to an image file.
    Web browsers normally accept jpg, png, and gif files, so you can convert your psd file into one of those three formats and let the html file point to it.
