A Gift Mac Pro Tower - But there are problems

I was given a Mac Pro Tower (No manual, box or anything, just the computer) that is a few years old, but was jazzed up with 8 GB memory and 2 x2.66ghz Dual - Core Intel Xeon Processors. It is running 10. 6 OS. It is obviously out of warranty, so I can't take it to the shop and expect them to fix it.
I am very confused about wireless modems or running a modem connected with a phone cord to the computer. When I connected the DSL modem I used on my G4 to the Mac Pro, it runs for a few minutes and then freezes the computer, asking me to restart it. The last time there was an error message saying "panic from CPU 2" (or something like it.) No one I have called has given me a straight answer. The computer also runs hot and I have to keep my space at 64 degrees to keep the computer genrerally happy. ATT my internet provider (@#%^#&z) has either tried to see me a new modem or new "services", even though my computer shows it already has a modem and is wireless modem capable. In fact, I can reveal my neighbors connections in the upper right hand pull down icon. Shouldn't I be able to log into ATT's internet service wirelessly since they have said I'm paying for it?
So if someone can explain what I need to do, need to buy, or not need to buy I'd be grateful.

Not all network equipment that worked with PowerPC worked with newer Intel Macs like yours.
And ISP will need to go through an activation page probably.
I switched recently from DSL when I found out the people that took over from the old company, would not work with two different Netgear ADSL modems anymore; nor would they work with Windows 8 (maybe just the activation script but seemed too much for me).
I had an old cable modem, switched to cable, but that would not work (bought in 2002) with their new equipment, but for $5/month I was fine (and get phone service through their modem) along with 24Mb service.
I went through a couple routers to get better wireless (the first cheaper unit really was not satisfactory and again felt it was worth the upgrade).
I recommend you contact Apple and for a small fee, once they check the hardware serial number on it (one reason to never ever post such ser no online btw) they can send out the OEM replacement DVD so you can at least run Apple Hardware Test.
with all the people here, you should still get great use from your new tower Mac Pro.

Even though I use the mac now, this was not the one Apple promised when I purchased online. if anyone would like to buy a mac, Please go to the actual store. DO NOT buy a mac through MAC ONLINE STORE!!! I strongly recommend! I feel like I wasted my time because the company doesn't keep its promise.

I have a Mac Pro tower with two internal Hard Discs, each one 2TB. I purchased a 3TB Time Capsule. But it does not allow me to back up because it says there is not enough back up space available. Between the two HDs there are 3.3TBs. Can I daisy chain TC?

No, you cannot link to produce a single large partition.
But you can have two separate backup jobs.. and use each partition. That is hard on TM but you can easily get a different backup software for it.

In TM you do a different setup and exclude the other drive.
But it is better to use an alternative software IMHO.

You would need to use a network drive of more than 4TB .. it would also take forever. This is just wrong way to do it. Although you can buy a NAS that will work with Time Machine and load it with disks 16TB is possible.. if you can get a second mortgage.. the fragile nature of TM on 3rd party devices.. would leave me in cold sweat if anything went wrong.
TM is excellent at keeping incremental backups of files that keep changing.. as such you should use TM to backup your OS disk and main user directory.. exclude all files and directories that never change. Back them up separately.

Yes, that is a much better idea. You want to store photos safely and you want to store them in multiple places. If you have multiple TB of photos, dedicate a couple of disks to the backup. ie have at least two copies.. not in backup format.. in straight copy format if possible.. so you can keep one of the disks offsite.
I would be using your MacPro internal disk access, to place the disk onto sata bus and do the copy disk to disk direct. Or even buy esata card.. or sata to esata converter cable so you can use esata box. That will beat any other transfer speed except thunderbolt for which you would need third mortgage. (The MORT in mortgage is significant).

Thanks. I have been using iTunes since its inception and have never had a problem...I'm using the latest version. The progress bar is the bar that moves when you're playing a song..it just won't start when I double click on a song,..have tried quitting, rebooting etc but nothing works. Apple are useless-they have told me twice they've tried to call me 'momentarily', but I've been waiting by the phone, and they definitely have not tried to call...

Restored vault on a new Mac and the projects and albums show up but there are no photos.

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro. I currently have about 33,000 photos on an older MBP. I created a vault (I thought) of my old Aperture library and saved it to my Time Machine. I restored it to the new MBP, which took forever, but after the restore the projects and albums I created show up on the new MBP but there are no photos. In the 'About My Mac' storage settings it says there is 162.68 GB of photos on my computer (which is the same size as the photos on my old MBP). How do I find them?!

If you want to remove the movies & videos from your iPod Nano in order to transfer to your computer, connect your iPod Nano to your computer. Double click your iPod Nano icon. If you got the question mark and you do not see any partition to install OS X to, it is not good.
Close the OS X installer by pressing the red button at the top left corner of the Install OS X window, and open Disk Utility. Then, look at the left sidebar and tell me if you see your hard drive. You should see something like this:
Do not worry if you do not see Macintosh HD or if the option with an arrow shows a different name. This is normal.
If you see it, choose it, go to the Erase tab and erase the drive. Finally, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X. You will lose everything if you do not have a backup.
If you do not see the drive, it is damaged and it has to be replaced. You can replace the hard drive of a MacBook Pro without voiding the warranty, and any 2'5" SATA hard drive is valid. If you are not an experienced user or you do not want to go inside the MacBook, take it to an Apple Store or reseller.

Left on my mac pro tower 4-core with 3 gigs of ram on all night as I often do. I merely power down the apple 23" monitor because that's the only that heats up. Came down in the morning, turned on the monitor and all I see is a white screen. just all white. never seen that before in all my years as a mac user. I made sure all connections were secure and rebooted. THen.... whiteness. blinding nothingness. I'm taking a wild guess here that the mother board is okay but the Hard Drive is dead? After work, I'll try to boot up from the start up dvd however.... it doesn't appear to even go through even prelim start up. i don't get the screen of death or anything. just nothingness.
Anyone had this problem? I got the computer and monitor about 6 months ago and it's been flawless. Didn't do anything different last night. no downloads..nothing.

Try resetting your PRAM/NVRAM:
Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
-Shut down the computer.
-Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
-Turn on the computer.
-Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
-Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
-Release the keys.
If that doesn't work, try booting to Open Firmware (commandoption+of) and reset the NVRAM:

I have seen something similar once. A message on the mail server was corrupted and the download would never complete, but would always start the next time I launched Mail. It was the oldest message, so Mail always started with it, blocking all other mail. Deleting the file on the server was the solution. Don't know if that fits your situation. Good luck. BTW, I called my ISP's tech support and they watched the server's actions and could see that the file was not actually transferring. Give yours a call.

Thanks for responding, I downloaded the Creative Cloud Installer which is sitting under Devices in my Finder and then installed the Ai app which is appearing under Applications in the finder. I notice that in the launch tutorial there is the Adobe Creative Cloud sitting in the Apps folder above Ai - I don't have this. Hmm what to do?

If you have some applications, it could easily be clipart that was included. Even MS Office has folders of clipart. 687 MB isn't all that much these days, if you have a few apps that include some.

I've tried transferring the parent folders, but it doesn't seem to work. Does anyone know of a more efficient way of getting iTunes to dig into the subfolders and transfer the music without me having to go one by one?
