A good european ADSL2+ modem to work with Time Capsule

Hi,
I'm looking for a good european (specifically Portugal) ADSL2+ modem (just a standalone modem) to work alongside Time Capsule.
Anyone have any good recommendations?
Thanks,
Matt

Hi
Ok, so I made the change. Before I'd updated, Id got a warning message to say that setting up via PPoE would reduce my security.
That is weird.. PPPoE is nothing to do with security.. it is a wan connection method that if required cannot be ignored or bypassed.. I see nothing there to do with security.. but your wireless might be an issue.
Also when ever network I connect to one has the padlock symbol and the other doesnt, see attached pic. Whats that all about?
The padlock shows security on the wifi is turned on... if there is no padlock the security is off. At least that is my understanding.. normally a padlock on means the settings are fixed .. but for wireless I think it just indicates security.

iPhones and iPads work with the Time Capsule, but not to use it to back them up. You can only use the hard drive of your Time Capsule from a PC or Mac, so you can't back them up to the Time Capsule

  • Best modem to use with time capsule?

I'm having Time Warner Cable (TWC) come into install internet only on Thursday.  I want to attach my new 3tb timecapsule to the network (which I just purchased so unused so far) and use as my wireless gateway and for wireless backup.  TWC has a list of recommended modems we can use.  I picked the motorola sb6141 but I saw a few posts on other threads here that is causes problems with Time Capsule over time and the speed diminishes.  Of their list, would someone recommend one of these other options instead? Or should I just go with the motorola?  Am not a tech savvy person, but can work with detailed instructions.  So whatever would give me the least headaches?   Thanks much!

I have a brand new macbook pro (2 months old) so i'm assuming I have the latest of everything.  I run the software update regularly.

You might want to read the discussion started in Feb 2014 with the title "What is the most reliable modem for my Apple Time Capsule." TWC was mentioned by two responders.
I am no technician and therefore cannot help beyond this referral. However,
I have a similar question about which modem to use with a Time Capsule. My ISP is Cox Communications, whose website suggests similar modem brand/types as mentioned in your list above, but also adds two Cisco models that are compatible with Cox internet. The Cisco models are DPC3000 (Preferred) and DPC3010 (Ultimate). I would like to get the DPC3010 but would like confirmation that the TC WiFi will work as flawlessly as it has been, while connected to a Linksys with DOCSIS 2.0 technology. Thanks for any advice.

  • How to make PPPoE work with Time Capsule?

I'm trying to connect a Time Capsule to an ADSL broadband connection using a Thompson Speedtouch 510v6 modem in bridged mode.
After selecting PPPoE, setting the userid and password in the Time Capsule and restarting, the Time Capsule shows a yellow light and says that it cannot find a PPPoE server.
If I connect the modem directly to my Mac, I am able to successfully establish the PPPoE connection, so I know that the modem, ADSL link, userid and password work. The Time Capsule also works fine if it is configured to use an IP connection to a router, as opposed to a PPPoE connection to a bridge.
Any hints about what the problem may be? I have no idea how to even begin debugging this.
A related question: Is there a way to get IP connectivity to the bridge device when it is connected to the Time Capsule in PPPoE mode? You would think that in PPPoE mode, the Time Capsule should treat the WAN port as just another hub port for the purpose of IP connectivity, but that does not seem to happen. With IP connectivity I could check the status of the bridge from any computer connected to the Time Capsule, which could possibly help me diagnose the problem.

There should only be one device setup to provide the PPPoE service for your network. If you have the Time Capsule setup to do this, you must make sure that your computer is no longer trying to do the same thing at the same time. In other words,,you need to delete or at least make the PPPoE connection not active on your computer.
If you are using Leopard or Snow Leopard on your computer, click the System Preferences icon and then click Network. Look for a PPPoE connection that displays your user name and password. Makes sure that this is not active. You would only want the PPPoE connection on your computer active when your computer is connected directly to the modem. If the Time Capsule is connected to the modem, you must turn off PPPoE on your computer.
Then power off your network. Start the modem first, then the Time Capsule and then your computers.

  • Has anyone got Time Machine to work with Time Capsule?

I've been trying for days to do an initial backup without success. Everything seems to be working fine and then it just stops and says the backup has "failed." The last one went 24 hours and backed up about 90 GB before it just stopped. Then it has to start over, from the beginning. (This thing is so slow you'd think somebody was writing the files out in longhand!) I even moved my iMac into the room with the Time Capsule, which is actually pretty annoying, in case it was a case of a dropped signal.

    Hi,
I've spent hours and hours trying to get the harddisk to work properly. Set-up was easy-peasy and the Airport works great for the internet. However, when trying to use time-machine and the hard disk it was a nightmare !!! Each attempt at the back-up failed after about 4 gig with a 'unable to mount volume' error. If I re-tried, it failed. Following some of the tips on the forums, I deleted the back-up file created by time machine on the hard drive and the initial back-up started successfully but failed after about 4 gig again (I had 96 gig to back-up). There are various fixes flying around - ensure you have a name for your computer - should be short and no spaces or funny characters. Same goes for your name of the timecapsule. Some people are saying you should use an ethernet cable for your first back-up but that should not matter at all. I took mine back to the apple store in the end - a mac genius downloaded all the latest patches (only came out 19th march) for the time-capsule firmware, time machine software and airport express. Still didn't work, so conclusion was the time-capsule was knackered !!! SO MY RECOMMENDATION IS TO GET APPLE TO REPLACE IT BUT MAKE SURE YOU TRY THE ABOVE FIRST.
New time-capsule was attached to my imac, started up great first time. My initial back-up ran through perfectly first time through wireless - it took 15 hours but I did have 96 gig to back-up. time machine sees this no problem so it looks like everything is fine.
    Good luck !!

  • Airport Express not working with Time Capsule

I replaced a NetGear wireless router with a new Time Capsule. After some trial and error I got everything that was hanging off the NetGear - 2 x TiVo machines, printer, extra ports for business laptops - working except my "old" Airport Express unit that I had been using to send my iTunes to my stereo tuner. I just cannot get this to connect to the Time Capsule wirelessly no matter what I do. It works just fine when connected wirelessly direct to my iMac but just will not connect to the Time Capsule as a client. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

I would suggest, reconnecting the Express to the TC again. Use the AirPort Utility to make ALL configuration changes including the network extending settings. Then restart both base stations and check that the settings are still good. Then disconnect the Express and give it a few minutes to initialize. It should connect. If not, then the issue may be either the distance or obstructions (like walls, ceilings, floors, etc.) that is preventing the Express from getting a signal from the TC that is adequate enough to extend.

  • Clear Wireless Modem not communicating with Time Capsule

I have a clear wireless home modem and am having connection issues with my time capsule. Has anyone else had this problem? How did you resolve it? I know the modem is working because when I connect the ethernet directly into my computer it works. Help!?

    Is this a new TC?
Most important.. did you power cycle the modem. If this is a cable network pure modem ie no router function.. did you power down the modem for say 20min at least?? Then power up modem wait a couple of min for it to stabilize then power up the TC.
If the TC is bridged this is not necessary.. ie your cable modem is also a router.
Here is a bit of detail about checking the wireless is ok.. but IMHO the likely issue is not wireless per se.
Did you use identical wireless names? If so try deleting all the old names in the computer under the wifi network preferences.
Select each one and use the minus to delete it.
Then redo the configuration for the TC.
No luck start over .. factory reset the TC use all new names.. short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric will give you much less problems in the future.
Still no luck make sure you have ipv6 set correctly.. ie link local only and check the gateway (router in applespeak) and dns values are correct.. dns is not on the main page.. it has a separate tab.

  • Time Machine won't work with Time Capsule

    HI all
I have been using TM to backup to an Iomega portable drive but because the drive is relatively small and because I thought that having less wires around the place would be a good thing, I bought Time Capsule. However when I try to backup to TC I get one and/or two error messages. The first is that backup failed because TM couldn't create a directory. The second is that backup failed because TM couldn't write the files. When the first message occurs it's during the 'preparing backup' phase. The second happens with about 200mb copied.
Does anyone know why I would get this message using TC but not using the Iomega drive. I changed the disk in TM and it is backing up to the Iomega drive. However....there is an issue here too. When I go into TM and look for user files I can only see a 'shared' user file and not my own user file. This is making me believe that I'm not really backing up anything at all!
I called Apple and they suggest an archive and reinstall. As I don't have enough free space to do this I have to delete files (either iphoto or itunes). Until I checked the Iomega drive to ensure that all my files were on it I was happily prepared to do this. Now I'm not sure I can restore my files from the Iomega drive if I delete them from my Mac. I can, of course, just copy the itunes and iphoto folders to TC independently of the backup but I am very confused about the potential problems with TC and what the Iomega drive holds as a backup too.
So before I do anything I'd appreciate if people had any thoughts.
    thanks
    WG

You have made no mention of how Time Capsule is connected. For the initial backup, you should be connected using an ethernet connection. It would be a fresh, new backup. Did your setup of TC go smoothly? I assume the network is all setup and that the TC disk sharing is enabled.

  • What's a good External Hard Drive to use with Time Capsule

I have a MacBook and a 1GB Time Capsule, and until recently used my TC to store and access the music and video files I've purchased from the iTunes store as well as my Time Machine backups. The HD in the TC crashed a few months ago, and necessitated a long, drawn out and somewhat expensive restore to get everything off the crashed drive before restoring it. So now, I simply want to use the TC as a backup using Time Machine, but I also want a good external hard drive that is either wireless and can either be connected through the TC's WiFi base station capabilities or can plug in to the TC's USB port.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Most USB drives should work fine. But there isn't much power on the USB port, so bus-powered drives must be connected via a powered hub.
And several folks have reported that larger drives, over about 750 GB, even if they have their own power, need a powered hub, too.
And be aware that Time Machine, like most backup apps, cannot back up from any network drive. The Chronosync app may be a usable alternative.

  • HT3728 Can't get my initial backup to work with Time Capsule...get the following error: An unexpected error occurred (error code -6584)

I linked up my Time Capsule yesterday and my initial backup failed twice. I then hooked up the Time Capsule to my iMac with an ethernet cable and now it won't work at all....can anyone help us out? Getting frustrated with this "easy" stuff!!
    Thanks.

Let me guess.. you are using Lion.
Redo the setup but download and install 5.6 utility if indeed Lion is involved.

Use SMB names for wireless and TC.. this helps..
    Short, no spaces pure alphanumeric..
Set and lock the wireless channels.

  • Why Time Machine stopped working with Time Capsule?

I have my Time Capsule connected via Ethernet to my iMac and wirelessly to my MacBook. Several days ago I got a warning on the iMac saying "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup - an error occured while copying - may be temporary - if persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disc."
Well, first Tim Capsule will not appear in Disk Utility, so that instruction is absurd. I went to Airport Utility but all that appears there is a graphic of T.C. with no buttons to do anything. My Mac consultant, who doesn't use Time Capsule or T.M, told me to hook it up using USB instead of Ethernet and it would appear in Disk Utility. Before I try that, does it make sense? He also suggested trying it wirelesslessly if that doesn't work.
Incidently, during all this time the T.C. wireless backups of the MacBook have continued unabated.
One forum participant urged me to take the T.C. to Apple to get it fixed. I don't think the drive is in that bad shape or why would the MacBook backups to its partition continue without problem?
I cleaned the Ethernet cable, unplugged both ends and plugged back in. T.M. indicated it had backed up twice, but now it has displayed exactly the same warning again, and says the last backup was several days ago. What should I do? I've zapped the Pram, run permissions on the iMac HD, and deleted all the browers' cache files.

My Mac consultant, who doesn't use Time Capsule or T.M, told me to hook it up using USB instead of Ethernet and it would appear in Disk Utility. Before I try that, does it make sense?
Ah, no. The TC's USB port cannot be used for that purpose.
I recommend another Mac consultant - Apple Support Communities contributor Pondini. Start with this: http://pondini.org/TM/C3.html
There are a variety of possible causes for that message, so exhaust all the potential remedies.

  • Shouldn't MacBook (13" Early 2008) work with Time Capsule at 5GHz

My son's MacBook (13" 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, Machine ID MacBook4,1, running Mac OS X 10.5.7) seems to be unable to connect to my first-generation Time Capsule that is configured to operate over 802.11n on the 5GHz band (the 2.4GHz band is very crowded here).
His MacBook has a AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x88) card by Broadcom (firmware BCM43xx 1.0 5.10.38.35) -- the same version of firmware I have on my MacBook Pro (which has no difficulty making the connection).
Question: Shouldn't that generation MacBook work with the 5GHz 802.11n TC?
Does anyone have an idea as to why it isn't working and/or a suggestion what to do about it?
    Thank you.

    It should work yes.
So it can join 2.5GHz networks fine?
Can it see the network? The network is an open one?
My current firmware is "Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.10.91.21)", which i guess is because of the firmware update that came with 10.5.8. The update was intended to solve problems with connecting to wireless networks. There was a problem with the airports on battery power and 10.5.8 but they've now released a patch. Maybe bringing your firmware up to date would help?

  • Does Time Machine ONLY work with Time Capsule?

    Hiya-
I've got a La Cie big ethernet disk that I've been using for my back-ups and finally stumbled across time machine and thought it would work better than the La Cie back-up software, however Time Machine doesn't seem to want to know anything about any other mounted disks unless they're through an airport.
My ethernet disk is connected through a netgear router and mounts just fine on my pwr book.
I am doing something wrong or is this just a nifty system feature to coax folks into buying a time capsule (even if they're on a pc!).
    Cheers in advance,
    tripp

    Hello Pondini,
I am able to back up fine with an external disk attached via USB directly to my MBP. This is a OS X formatted disk from WD. But TM does not back up if I connect the disk to my Airport Extreme (via USB).
It sounds from your comment that there is a way around this ... could you please explain how I should use the terminal command?
Be extremely careful when using Terminal. It is a direct interface into UNIX, the underpinning of OSX. There are few protections against making a mistake, which can cause untold damage.
Open the Terminal app (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
In Terminal, the prompt looks like this: user-xxxxxx:~ <your name>$
(where <your name> is your short user name). It's followed by a non-blinking block cursor (unless it's been changed via Terminal > Preferences).
Copy the following, exactly, after the prompt, then press Return:
    defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

  • Looking for a printer/scanner that works with Time Capsule

I recently purchased a Canon MP250 printer/scanner, 1 GB Time Capsule, and two iMac's (21.5 and 27). I connected the printer/scanner to the Time Capsule USB port and it was absolutely trivial to get both iMac's to print to the MP250. My problem is that I can not figure out how to get the scanner to save scanned image files to either iMac.
If I plug the Canon MP250 directly into either iMac, it is trivial to scan. Pressing the SCAN button on the MP250 causes the Image Capture application to launch on the iMac, and then you simply press the Scan button of the Image Capture application.
If it is not possible to scan connecting the Canon MP250 to the Time Capsule, is there another model of printer/scanner that will work as a scanner when connected to the Time Capsule?
    Thanks,
    Carroll

If it is not possible to scan connecting the Canon MP250 to the Time Capsule, is there another model of printer/scanner that will work as a scanner when connected to the Time Capsule?
The USB port on the Time Capsule will only support compatible printers. It will not support other functions such as copy, fax, scan or maintenance. If you need these services, your only option is to connect the all-in-one directly to a computer.

  • Find my iDevices no longer works with Time Capsule

Since switching to iOS 5 and OS 10.7.2, Find my iPhone (iPad/Mac) no longer finds any devices connected to my Time Capsule. If I turn off WiFi on my iPhone, then the service will eventually find it (but not immediately). Otherwise the service says all of the devices connected via WiFi are actually offline. I don't know what other options to choose to make this work. Any help appreciated!

have you upgraded to the new ios5 software? if so that could be the issue and contact apple.
