A good microphone for Skype?

When I'm on Skype I use my external monitor, and my 15" retina MBP is in clamshell mode.
This is why I need a microphone to use Skype.
I heard that you can't use USB-powered microphones on a Mac.
Is this true?
What microphone can you recommend me?
I'd honestly prefer an USB microphone, as my 3.5mm line-in is being occupied by my speakers.
Your input is much appreciated.

I heard that you can't use USB-powered microphones on a Mac.
Is this true?
NOPE!
What microphone can you recommend me?
Check out the mics on Apple's online store.  I personally use
Snowball for all of my video chats.  I do not use Skype.
If you do not like the ones at the AS, Google search for Mac resellers.  MacMall is a good place to start.

Do iPads and most tablets have a microphone for  Skype?

    Yes.
iPad has a built in microphone for facetime and skype calls.
As for other tablets, it depends on the manufacturer whether they include a mic or not.

  • Microphone for Skype

    Hi there,
I have no idea if I'm posting in the right spot, but here goes. I just signed up for a Skype account, but don't know if my computer has a microphone. How can I find that out? I did a search on the hard drive but didn't come up with any microphone. Do I need to purchase one? I am working on a 2009 imac.

If you choose to, you can purchase a microphone pretty cheap that will plug in back of the computer.
Not into the 3.5mm jack input socket - that's line level and won't accept microphones. USB mics, yes, but cheap they're not.

  • How to turn on microphone on iPhone 6 for Skype calls. I see a picture of a microphone with a red line drawn through it. Thanks.

ow does one turn on the microphone for Skype calls on a iPhone 6 ?  I can see (video)  the person with the iPhone 6  and they can see and hear me but they cannot speak as their iPhone 6 shows a symbol that says "microphone" with a line drawn through it. Please help. Thank You.

According to Apple's list (link above) you will probably want to pick up a Sprint or US Cellular model. HOWEVER, as I mentioned above I know that the Verizon iPhones come unlocked from the factory (assuming it will be the same for iPhone 6 and 6+). I DO NOT KNOW if the Sprint and US Cellular models come unlocked. But I am sure some quick internet research will lead you to the answer.
I think your goal would be to get a Sprint or US Cellular version. Also I believe a law was just recently passed that allows someone to have a phone unlocked by the carrier no questions asked. So even if the Sprint and US Cellular iPhones are locked you can have them unlocked.

  • Internal Microphone not working with Quicktime and some other apps, yet it does for Skype.

Internal Microphone not working with Quicktime and some other apps, yet it does for Skype.
Microphone works fine with Quictime on another mac, so I do know how to use it. The one where it is not working (A) had an external microphone and camera attached earlier, and indeed it does work with that external microphone, but not with the internal microphone selected; and (B) had RealPlayer installed previously.
    Any suggestions, please?

    Hi,
    Download Audio driver from here.
Intructions how to install it in Vista/Win7.
    Extract this driver with Winrar.
Open Device manager and expand the Sound, video and game controllers section.
Right click on Either the High Definition Audio Device if you have the generic Microsoft drivers, or the Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 if you have older Conexant drivers and choose "Update Driver Software..."
Click Browse my computer for driver software, then click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
Click "Have Disk..." then Browse to the folder where the drivers were extracted  .......\V64 for 64-bit Vista/Win7. Click OK.
Select one of the "Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221" models in the list, there will be multiple identical entries.
    Click Next, and you're done.
I'm not sure which one from the list will work for You.
This drivers weren't test. So if You will try them and it will work for You let us now about.

  • Microphone Setup (for Skype)

I'm having problems making my microphone work (for Skype specifically). I have a Sound Fusion CS46xx soundcard... The headphones work fine and the microphone isn't broken since I've tested it on a friends computer. I've had a look at the (many) posts on similar problems and have
    a) fiddled about with alsamixer, mic is on capture and, with mic boost on I can hear myself in my own headphones - but still no sound can be heard when I skype others.
    b) I've also had a mess about with KMix but it seemed to make no difference.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be much appreciated...

    Thanks for the help Lanrat...
With the alsa settings as you suggested sound going in to the microphone comes out of my computer speakers but isn't captured by arecord... I don't have a 'surround' control in alsa unlike MartinZ.
I've tried recording the sound as root but no difference - still a silent file.
I've checked the different mics and I'm using the one that makes sound come out of the speakers...
    lsmod gives the following output...
    [ewan@ewanslaptop ~]$ lsmod|grep snd
    snd_cs46xx 77640 1
    gameport 11656 2 snd_cs46xx

I'm guessing I must be missing some key link in the chain... Any ideas?

    Hi,
I'm looking for a online private tutor for teaching me Adobe Premiere Elements 8 through  remote cessions and Skype.
Willing to pay a good price for good tuition!
Please contact me asap if you can help.
    Thanks,
    J Sussholz

    Jacqui,
I stongly believe that Steve has given you the best advice. Actually, it's the same advice that I would have given you, if I had seen your post first!
I can verify that his books will give you more info, and in a more usable form, than tutoring, or even in-class, hands-on schooling will. Almost anything that can be done with the program (he also has a companion book for Photoshop Elements, which is often bundled with PrE) is covered in easy to understand detail.
After reading through, and working along, his second bit of advice, Muvipix, is also sound. Between this, and Muvipix fora (Community tab), there have been very few questions that could not be answered. Muvipix also is a great resource for additional articles on how things are done, plus tutorials.
I also recommend that one take an hour and read through both the FAQ and Tips & Tricks articles, found to the right of the PrE forum main page. I would read Steve's book first, so terms, etc. would be most clear.
There are two on-line training sites, that get great reviews: www.lynda.com and www.ltotaltraining.com. I have not subscribed to either, but have used the materials furnished from them with various Adobe programs. I also have several of the lynda.com books on various programs, and they are well-written. Now, they are NOT one-on-one tutoring, which is what you are looking for. They also probably do not cover PrElements, but that is just my guess. If they do, they would be another good source of training, though it's through tutorials, and not direct instruction.
This is just my 02¢'s worth of thought.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • What headhones are good for Skype? I want closed type.

What models can i buy to work in Skype? I'd like them to be the best for speech. But I don't need headphones to be able to have better characteristics than my Mac book pro has and let me remind you I don't need to listen to anything but speech. So, I don't need to waste money.

    Google, "best headphones for skype"
Compare all the info then make up your mind based on your criteria.

  • EMU 1616 with Shure58S/58SE for skype calls?

    Hello!
I've sent this question to Thomann.de support, but I didn't get anything useful in return..
Basically I want to buy this bundle - http://www.musicstore.de/en_EN/LVL/_SET_-Shure-SM58SE-inkl.-Stativ-Kabel/art-PAH109
And I have a bit older version of this card (1616 instead of 1616M):
    http://www.musicstore.de/en_EN/LVL/EMU-1616m-PCIe-16-In-16-Out-FX/art-PCM0008873-000
Will this microphone work on skype, for voice calls?...
Usual PC microphones don't work with 1616 card (as they are not active microphones). My work involves skype calls and I can't call when 1616 is connected. At least not with usual PC microphone.
So I'm using integrated sound card for quite a while...
Will this mic work for this? Please advise.
    Best wishes,
    Aleks

You and I had the good sense to see tremendous value in the E-Mu 1616 MicroDock audio interface.  Unfortunately, apparently few other people did, or maybe E-Mu would still be in business.
    Where to start.
Until recently, I used a headset under Windows XP with no problem. Not even sure how I had Patchmix set up, but I knew NOTHING of ASIO outputs in those days, so might not even have had a Send inserted somewhere.  I was able to use both a headset mic (see below), and/or a phantom-powered condenser with Skype audio-call sessions. I upgraded to Windows 7 in Jan 2013, and although I've used Skype rarely since then, my call record shows that I made a long call last summer, so it must have worked.  In the fall, I updated what may have been a very old version of Audacity, and suddenly could no longer get 1616 sound into Audacity. I've since learned that Audacity doesn't support ASIO, and apparently there's no other way to interface them. (Using properly matched ASIO "send" inserts, I can still use my mics with Pro Tools.)  I also use a product called Total Recorder, which I generally have set up to record from "software" (as opposed to a mic input), and used to regularly put me on one channel and the other person on the other channel.
Now I find that Skype doesn't hear the 1616. Total Recorder doesn't (although their earnest support dept has assured me it should, and should not depend on getting the sound via ASIO -- I have yet to check their report fully, but my first try was unsuccessful).  And the Skype situation is a total mystery -- it says my microphone is working properly, but neither the Call Quality record/play test, nor the test call will hear it, whatever I have tried. (And I swear I've tried and triple checked everything, even removing other recently added audio software and reverting to a week-old Restore Point. (I dare not go back months, if that is even possible.)
Skype does "hear" a USB headset that I plugged in just for testing.  Windows foudn and loaded drivers for it, and I made a successful test call.  Although of course in comparison, the headset's audio sucked.
So, although I have no hands-on experience with the SM58 my short answer is: Yes, it should work with any professional dynamic or condenser mic.  But in my case, it still does, but Skype suddenly does not work with it.
    Supposedly "correct" configuartion for Skype.

To use an ordinary telephone headset with the MicroDock, you need an amplifier of sort between them. (Which was news to me until a guy deep in Plantronics nicely explained -- apparently headphones use an electret approach?)  With suitable mono/stereo adapters etc., an Andrea APS-100 Battery Box should do the trick.  I got mine from eMicrophones, but a search may turn up other current sources.  About $12 plus shipping.  It uses a AAA battery, and fidelity is okay for phone use.   I don't know if it would be the correct solution (or at all a solution) for a low-output (cheap tape recorder) dynamic mic.  That probably would call for a conventional pre-amp of some kind, although the mic I just tried seems to give signal enough.
By the way, I tried your link to the 1616m and succeeded in putting into a cart, where it says they have it "in stock."  Some nerve!  Okay, a bit of thanks to Creative Inc. for not doing away with the E-MU site entirely, but how does anyone have the chutzpah to sell the thing when there is no support, no "official" driver (just a 2010 beta and 2009 documentation), nobody there, no active forms or email, and their forum is virtually dormant?

  • Can I use a Bluetooth headphone/microphone for capture sound instead of normal iPhone mic when shooting video?

Can I use a Bluetooth headphone/microphone for capture sound instead of normal iPhone mic when shooting video?
The sound when I record video is not so good, so I'm trying to use the Bluetooth headphone/microphone to capture a person voice but not know which setting to use.

    Hi Robert
Thanks for answering. I didn't know where to post other than the bluetooth forum which is relatively quiet and had no answers forthcoming.
Yes the voice isn't reaching the amp although it is registering on the input bar in the Sound System Prefs, just won't "play through" as it were. I can't see how it could be done I was just hoping someone might see something I am missing.
It seems a shame that you can't do it as iTunes on an old iBook makes a good juke box for DJ'ing and with everything becoming wireless these days it seems sensible that you could cut that one last wire.

  • A Suggestion for Skype to consider regarding the T...

Hello, I have a suggestion for Skype. When I look at my "Purchase History" in my Skype account it no longer shows the time my order was placed. Not having this information makes it difficult managing my subscription.
I would like to see Skype include the time a transaction was made in the "Purchase History" .
    Thanks.

Elitist is not the right word... But your expected to do you part too.
I honestly think the "The Arch Way" wiki lays it out pretty damn well.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/The_Arch_Way
Read that, if it sounds good you will likely enjoy arch. If it sounds bad, yeah arch may be bad for you.
Truth is the wiki is fantastic, and dedicated people have spent an amazing amount of time putting it together... So for ALMOST EVERYTHING there is detailed step by step information that basically will fix your problem. You just need to read it, understand it and possibly even research on your own the parts you don't understand.
When people just come to the forum and ask to be told directly instead, yeah we may seem elitist expecting they know enough to figure it out on their own... But that is only because the community already wrote out a really really detailed explanation for them, but they just wanted someone else to do the work/troubleshooting for them. Its a bit weird to ask stranger to care more about your problems then you do
But, detailed and specific questions are met with wonderful and fantastic help. This is the most stable and functional distro/operating system I have ever run (in part because after "building" it its pretty easy to fix.)
This ISN'T a newbie distro in that its not for people who just want a working computer for minimal effort... That doesn't mean its hard mean or bad, but it does mean its targeted towards serious users who want to be able to build and fix their own system. A certain standard is expected (and I really like that), its not hard to meet it.... But if you don't want anything expected of you you may not want arch. Reading a paying attention can make it more or less an easy and fruitful experience for even novice users however.

    Excellent reply SeanEllis Thank you.
Yes after I had the ideas, wrote a survey and created the Skype Room group, I discovered the Forum thread about Skype Ideas and had the same thought. they are already doing this. So, I guess the benefit of mine is to raise awareness of this Skype Idea Community Board.
In my Skype Room guidelines, there is a link to the Survey which has links to all the Skype Ideas Boards for all the Skype clients, (Win7,8 iOS, Mac)... well Mac didnt have one, but I linked to the Mac blog & community.
I completely agree and love the explanation of the process to elevate the most Kudo'd  (voted for/ popular) idea requests for implimentation. Very Impressive. People don't relaize that Skype/MS is listening... as you said ... to the clear focused voice of the most voted for and commented on Ideas for Skype changes.  So Pleae dont dilute the votes for the same request! I will repeat the good info  I found and link to it again....

    PS Status of Your Idea
This is what shows me that Skype/MS is listening (from the last link above, in case you want to read the whole thing):
    What do the votes/kudos mean?
Just as you can give kudos in the community boards and blogs, you can vote for ideas you like on the Idea Board. Ideas with high vote totals are more likely to be recognized and accepted by the teams at Skype who develop our products and services. You can also leave comments on ideas, but remember to be kind! (my underline)
What do the different idea statuses mean?
We strive to review submitted ideas on a biweekly/monthly cycle. Each idea will go through a life cycle that will be assigned statuses at each milestone. The statuses are explained here:
    Status of Your Idea:

More information needed- More information is needed before our Product Management team can take this forward, please review the comments left by the team.
Duplicate - Ideas in this status have already been submitted in some form or another. We will link these items over to the other idea so you can review the status or track the progress there.
Already exists - This is available in the product.
Future possibility - Idea is a good one but not something we can include in a near-term product or software release.
Accepted - Idea has been accepted and has been taken forward for implementation, check back soon for updates.
Not right now - We like the idea but just not for right now, we will revisit it in the future.

  • When testing the microphone with Skype, the pla back sounds garbled.

Problem with microphone testing Skype.  When testing the sound and play back it sounds garbled.

    Hello,
    Thanks for your post!
What computer model do you have? Are you using the internal MIC or any external one? Have you checked the volume of that mic and try to decrease it? Also low down the volume from your speakers or from your default playback device.
What operating system do you have?
Please provide this additional information to understand more your setup and if the cause of it is settings related.
By the way, did it worked before? If its the first time, you can also try to update the sound driver or even remove it from device manager and having the device detected again, maybe in that way it will resolve the problem.
