A grey photo from nowhere?!

Hey, you guys, before you read this, this is no joke! I had took a video of my cousin on the vine app, I posted it and then went to the camera roll to check the vid. there was also a mostly grey pic that I didn't take! What's up with my iPod?! This has never happened before! Like I said, the picture was mostly grey, but I'll tell you now, there was something I didn't reconise partially at the edge of the right side of my photos. This photo came from nowhere and was in my camera roll! I don't know where it came from!

This has happened on my phone before.  It is likely either a partially corrupted photo or a photo that did not fully delete.  What happens is when a photo is "corrupted" it means that the data controlling the picture is scrambled beyond decoding. The iOS cannot translate the data in the file to be able to make an image out of it.  Under normal circumstances, the picture would drop out of the list, but on rare occasions, the data can be corrupted in such a way that the files headers are intact (thus the image can be seen) but the data in the body of the image cannot be translated (hence the grey image).  What you are seeing is the OS's best guess at trying to translate the image.    It can be a scary thing to come across because corrupted data is NEVER a good sign.  However, if this is your first time seeing this, and have not seen any other noticable problems with the device, I would not worry about it.
~Cheers!

I am having a problem when I try to select a photo or itunes song in Imovie or other programs. I get a window with grey lettering that says: "Open Itunes to populate this list" or "Open iphoto to see photos from your iPhoto library in this list.  I have tried relaunching programs and nothing appears. Seemed to start happening a while back after one of my system upgrades.

After a a lengthy conversation with Apple Tech. ($20), my problem seems to be solves. The Iphoto problem solved by trashing the plist file. The Itunes was more involved. We had to create a new Itunes folder and import the files into the new folder; and then import the playlists.

OK, here are a set of screenshots with my step by step - maybe you will be able to spot where I've gone awry:
I find a photo in the Library that I will delete from an album:
I go down to my Albums and find the picture in one of them:
I hover over the pic so the little down arrow appears in the bottom right-hand corner. I click on it, then click on the Trash Can in the window that drops down:
    Gone from the Album:
    Gone from the Library:
    In the Trash:
    Whaddup with that?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

When i try to sync photos from iPhoto to my iPad using iTunes,  the "Selected Folders" option is greyed out with only the "All Folders" option available, how do i change this?

I add the keyword 'sync' to any photos I want added to the iPhone/iPad.
Then, during the regular process of syncing the iPhone/iPad with my computer (mac), the photos with that keyword would be copied onto the iPhone, iPad.
I've been doing it this way ever since I was shown how to; ie after I got my iPhone 2 years ago. And every time the process worked - until the last few weeks. Suddenly it doesn't do it any more.
I believe I have upgraded software (either iTunes or iPhoto or both) during this period. I try to keep my software updated but have noticed previously that the new version often is disappointing.
I've not tended to use Smart albums much.

  • How do i delete photos on my iphone that were previously deleted from itunes? cannot remove photos from iphone album.  trash can is greyed out.

how do i delete photos on my iphone that have already been deleted from my windows laptop? The photos cannot be selected and removed from the iphone album.  trash can is greyed out.

You should be able to delete the photos by syncing with iTunes. Either remove the checkmark beside "Sync Photos From" on the photos page of iTunes or change the selection of photos to be synced. Each time you sync it is supposed to set the non-Camera Roll photos on the phone to match the current settings/selection in iTunes.

    How are you trying?

Videos do not go into Photo Stream.
You can add them to a Shared Photo Stream.

    Hi ginger1616,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your iPhone is unresponsive, try resetting it using this method:
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
You can find the full article with these steps here:

Not sure if it will help but if you had registered it with Apple you could try unregistering it.  To do this:
    Go to: https://supportprofile.apple.com/MySupportProfile.do
Log in if not already logged in.
Click on ">" to the right of the device you want to unregister
    Click "unregister"

  • I uploaded thousands of photos from my ipad to iphoto and now they are nowhere to be found. Where are they?

Hi! I just uploaded thousands of photos from my ipad to my iphoto on my macbook pro and when it notified me that it uploaded successfully and asked if I wanted to delete the photos on my ipad...I stupidly deleted them. But my main problem is that I cannot find these photos ANYWHERE! I searched every event and latest import and there was no luck. It's as if they were never imported in the first place. These photos are dear to me, please help!!!
    Mahalo,

-This is iphoto '09 version 8.1.2
And what is your MacOS X version?
BUT! I used "Find Any File" demo software and it helped me find the "photos" but they weren't in iphoto, but on my mac(still not too sure where it was found.)
Do you have "Find Any File" still open?
If you click one of the found images, it will show you the path to the image files.Could you post what you are seeing then?
Does the path start with your Home folder or outside? Desrcibe exactly the the names of the nested folders.
Now my new problem is that the photos that were uploaded(or found) are tiny and pixelated. What i'm hoping is that I found a cheap version of the photos that were uploaded or something,
Perhaps you found the thumbnails folder - if you can give us the path there, we may be able to find the matching Masters or Originals folder.

  • Unable to delete photos from iPhone 5 Model MD655LL/A

My wife needs to free up some space on her iPhone so she can take more photos and videos.  She has an iPhone 5 Model MD655LL/A.  In General > About the device shows a Capacity of 12.7 GB and Available 1.1 GB.  She has 9 videos and 1,488 photos on this phone. She also pays about $4 a month for iCloud storage.
I've connected this device to our Mac and to one of our PCs.  We are unable to remove the photos from this phone.  Upon selecting a photo from any collection, I can see the trash can icon on the lower right, but it is greyed out.
Now, I've read that Apple makes it impossible to delete the photos that are synced to the iCloud.  This makes sense, since the syncing process would add the photo back to your device if it's not detected in the cloud.  Our dilemma is this.  She needs additional space on her phone. She thought that the iCloud service would provide her with additional space beyond the limitations of her phone where she could store photos without using up her phone's storage space.  Based on what I briefly read, it appears that we misunderstood the iCloud storage, at least in this regard.
Here is what I need to be able to do.
    1. Back up the photos from her phone to one of our devices.  Either the Mac or the PC, it makes no difference to me.
    2. Then delete the photos from her phone, but retain them on the device where we backed them up.
I expected to be able to use Windows Explorer on the PC in Windows 7.  But upon connecting the phone to the PC, there is no directory to the phone that shows me the image contents.  Instead, there is a folder under "Computer" named "iCloud Photos". Selecting that shows a message where I expected to see a listing of contents on the device, which reads "iCloud Photos is not enabled" followed by a link "Open iCloud Control Panel".  Selecting that link opens the iCloud dialog, showing iCloud Storage of 182.53 GB of 200 GB available.
Selecting the checkbox next to Photos and choosing the Options button just shows a dialog that lets me choose the iCloud Photos Location on my PC.  But I don't see a list of the photos.
    3.  Where is a dialog that I can use to drag-and-drop in Windows 7 from the phone to a directory using Windows Explorer?
I need detailed, step-by-step instructions for this.  Do we just need to cancel the iCloud account?  The storage doesn't do us any good if upon deleting a photo from the iCloud the syncing process will delete photos from our computers and our phone.  Do we need to configure the iCloud account differently?  Also, how can we tell if a photo is locked in the cloud, and thereby permanently affixed to her iPhone.
Thanks for helping us.  This has been very frustrating.

The "delete after Import" message will not always appear after the import.  It appears, if you are importing from a camera or card, but I do not see it, when I import from a mobile device with iCloud Photo Library enabled and into a System Photo Library, that also uses iCloud Photo Library.
    See the Photos Help:  https://help.apple.com/photos/mac/1.0/?lang=en#/pht6c803201
If a message asks whether you want to delete or keep the photos on your camera after they’re imported, click Delete Items to remove the photos, or click Keep Items to keep them on the camera.
Unfortunately, this Help text does not state exactly, when it will be possible to delete after import and when not.

  • UNABLE TO ACCESS MY PHOTOS FROM OTHER PROGRAMS

Hi new Mac user here. can anyone shed some light on a small problem I am having.
I am trying to upload my images to a photo library, but when i click on the select file button it opens up another window allowing me to navigate to where my images are stored in iphoto. I navigate to pictures etc, but when I get to iphoto it is greyed out and won't let me locate the image I want to upload.
Any ideas why I cannot select my photos which are in seperate folders within iphoto library?

    paramedone
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • I transferred some photos from my iPhone onto iPhoto and then the remaining, untransferred photos on my iPhone were deleted? Help!

Hi, everyone! I don't know if this question has been answered, but I recently lost my photos on my iPhone.
My iPhone memory was full, so I decided to transfer some of the photos on my iPhone onto iPhoto to clear up some space. (In hindsight, I probably should have transferred all of the photos AND I should have backed up my photos on iTunes regularly). Anyway, after transferring some of the photos, I selected the "delete imported photos" option on iPhoto. After unplugging my iPhone from my laptop, my Camera Roll looked like this:
There were only about 5 photos left and these odd video icons that were inaccessible. I was only able to transfer photos from January to March 2013. I'm missing all of my photos from March to December 2013. I also checked the amount of space I had left on my iPhone, and the amount of free space I have now is a few gigabytes more than I had before the photos went missing, so I'm guessing my photos were deleted.
I tried to look for a solution online, and I didn't really find any threads that talked about this specific problem, but I tried the suggestion of one article (albeit the article wasn't exactly about this problem) to delete these three files from my PhotoData. It made the inaccessible video icons disappear, but my photos are still nowhere to be found.
Does anyone know why this could have happened or how I can retrieve my photos? Has anyone encountered this before and has found a solution? I would really like to retrieve my missing photos. Thank you!

probably a question for the iPhone forum  since restoring photos on the iPhone does not involve iPhoto at all

  • I have the original ipad. I can't delete my photos from the ipad, and the new itunes update does not give me the option to sync photos. What do I do?

I have the orignal ipad. I synced all my photos from my computer onto. Now I don't have enough storage on my ipad so I want to delete these photos. When I try from my ipad it only gives me the option to share or copy, NOT DELETE. I went to resync my ipad to itunes, after I downloaded the new version and now it doesn't give me an option to sync photos. How do I get rid of them?

    Wow.  That's weird.
Is your iPad jailbroke?  If it is, all bets are off.  If it is not jailbroke, keep reading.
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.
