A Headphone is Not A Speaker

This is so amazingly silly.
When I plug the headphone in, it not only announces that I have plugged in a headphone, it originally expected me to acknowledge that I'd plugged in a headphone.
Given that, why does it then blast sound in my ears at the level needed to hear the system speakers?
Right? You try to adjust the sound level, and all it says is "speakers/headphone". Not speaker volume | headphone volume" as any machine built past 1995 should have. Just "speakers/headphones volume".
This is so amazingly stupid, I can't believe I am typing it.
What gives?

"In any case there is not much to be done about it."
Ed, normally I have better insight into issues when I know the model of the laptop under discussion. You didn't identify your model but I tried to puzzle out which audio system you have. Most of the reports of overly loud headphone volume come from owners of models with Realtek audio. On the other hand you said you have Speakers/Headphones, which is typical of models with IDT audio.  I considered asking you to supply the name of your model but I decided that would cause an unnecessary delay since I I don't have the solution anyway, no matter what the model might be. That's what I was thinking when I carelessly wrote "in any case".
I see now that you have one of the Inspiron 15's. There are 27 models in that line so far. I believe they all have Realtek audio except for 4 models from 2010 & 11 that had IDT.

Well, what is the point of coding a headphone detector into the driver?
I think the point is to automate jack configuration. Intel set the specifications that manufacturer's have to follow when designing the HD audio codec (the chip on the MB). It has to be able able to support configurable jacks (but the laptop manufacturers don't have to implement configurable jacks -- that is their choice). Personally I think that maybe the codec is over-engineered. Some of the options can lead to otherwise avoidable problems. I see what they were aiming for and agree that it works great in certain situations. For example on the Dell laptops with 3 jacks -- 2 for headphone and one for mic/line-in -- if you plug a speaker into the mic jack, it detects that it is not a mic and assumes that you are going to be using a 5.1 surround speaker system. Then the mic jack re-configures to be a 3rd output jack, for a total of 6 channels of audio, 5.1.That usually works pretty good.
But in a laptop with only one headphone jack I don't see the need for detection. It should always be a headphone port with no need to re-configure. Windows uses detection to trigger software switching to switch the audio signal routing between the jack and the speakers, but detection is just a extra layer of complication. Linux does not use software switching (just uses the normal contact switches in the jack) and avoids the problems that arise when an impedance sensor fails.
EdJones1
I already know I plugged in a headphone.
On most models with Realtek, Dell replaced the Realtek HD Audio Manager with its own Dell Audio Manager. That's one of the problems because the original manager had an option to show a separate volume control for headphones. Anyway, if your model has Realtek, look for Dell Audio Manager in the Control Panel. There is a box to check to block the detection notification. I think it is in the Settings Advanced tab.

To hear the speaker on any Dell laptop I've used, a volume of ~80-90 is required--even at bent-arm's length.
In the latest Inspiron 15's Dell has started limiting the max volume in the BIOS (to prevent damage to the under-engineered speakers). Dell seems to have gotten it exactly backwards -- too much headphone volume and too little to the speakers.
To elaborate on what I said earlier about the Windows native audio driver. It used to be that when that driver was installed you would get a separate Headphones in the list of devices. But that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. In my Latitude E5420 with Windows 7, the driver shows me 2 playback devices, both named just "Speakers", one of which is "not plugged in". When my laptop is on its dock, that "Speakers" becomes "ready". When I set it as the  default it routes the audio signal to the dock's audio jack, to which I have connected a set of external speakers. When I set the other "Speakers" to be the default device, the audio signal is routed back to the laptop's internal speakers/headphone jack. The volume level of the laptop's speakers and the dock's jack can be set independently of each other. Unfortunately I have not found a way to set the levels of the laptop's speakers and its own jack independently of each other.

Chances are you have some lint or other material lodged in your headphone jack.  Try inserting and removing headphone jack a few times and see if it dislodged whatever might be stuck there

my speaker as well as headphones are not working in hp pavillion dm4 1101tx series

    Hi,
    Try the following.
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp51501-52000/sp51937.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, restart the notebook and let Windows fully load.  Open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio.
If you still have no audio, open windows Control Panel, open Administrative Tools and open Services.  Check that the following services are all showing as Status= Started and Start-up Type= Automatic
    Audio Service
    Multimedia Class Scheduler
    Windows Audio
    Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
If you need to make a change to any of the above, just right click the service and select Properties, then in the dropdown box next to 'Start-up type',  select Automatic and click Apply to save the change.  Then click the Start button.

  • DDTS-100 loud headphone hiss, but not from speaker out?

It would seem I've lucked out big time with the 550 & ddts-100 purcahse. I'm looking into what the supplier can do for me regards the 550 as Creative are as useless as ever.
However, last nite I noticed that both headphone jacks on the DDTS-100 decoder produce a very noticeable amount of hiss, but the speaker outputs on the back do NOT. The hiss is there will everything unplugged from the unit.
This is the exact situation as I have with the 550 in reverse - there is was perfect with headphone, but hiss on the speakers. With the decoder it's the speakers that are fine (if using something other than my 550's lol but headphones are hissy as.
What gives? Why is this, and more to the point, should it be like that? Can anyone else with a ddts-100 report in? My headphones are not cheap crap either, they're probably about US$250, and Senheisers.

Nah, there is no volume control on the headphones, and even speakers attached directly to the headphone jack get hiss. It's weird, the headphone jack outputs at a much lower line level (I need to set the DDTS-100 line level much higher) but yet there is more hiss. It must be coming from a seperate circuit than the speaker outs.
I'd really like to hear back from other people with DDTS-100s as to how their ones work - hiss or no hiss.
    Thanks,
    Josh

  • MacBook speakers and headphones are not working! Please help.

    MacBook OS X 10.6.8
    2009 model
I was watching a movie and my MacBook randomly shutdown by itself. I turned it back on and had no more problems, so I restarted the movie. The audio was not working in my headphones. So I tried the internal speakers and there was still no sound. I did a quick google search which led me to trying various options and finally called Apple Support on the phone.
I've tried resetting my PRAM but it only showed an alternating screen between grey and black. Nothing happened. I also reset SMC but that didn't work either. I have checked everything in system preferences, Audio MIDI, etc. and it all appears to be correct.
While on the phone we found that when I plug headphones or an external speaker in, it does not show up on the "output" menu under System Preferences > Sound.
I do NOT have the money to go to a computer store and the nearest Apple Store is 2 hours away. I desperately need help because most of the work I do involves having to be able to listen to sound. Please help if you can. I'm not ignorant when it comes to computers but I'm no genius. If you have any ideas, please be specific. Your help is very appreciated.
PS. When a speaker is plugged in at first, I hear a little crackling from it. The same happens to what sounds like internal speakers if I start a video.

  • One headphone does not work or works 50% of the time.  What is best way to resolve?

one headphone does not work or works 50% of the time.  What is best way to resolve?

First of all, I'd recomend resetting the iPod. Do this by pressing the 'Menu' and 'Center" buttons for 10 seconds or until the Apple logo appears.
If this doesn't work, then it sounds like a hardware fault.
To identify the issue, if you have one, try plugging the iPod into a speaker through the dock. If this works, then the issue is with the headphone jack. If not then the logic board is dead.  If the iPod is less than a year old, then it can be repaired by Apple for free. Just book an appointment for the Genius bar.
If not then, you could see about sending it to an iPod Repair Company, such as my own. A replacement headphone jack would cost £30.00 in the UK, including next day delivery. Other companies you could try would beUKiPodRepairs, but we guarantee to beat any quote that you get.

  • Internal speakers and headphones are not working

I have hp g6 2231tx os Windows 8, brought it a month ago..now it's internal speakers and headphones are not working..I enabled in playback device from sound mixer and reinstalled drivers but still not working..it's because of hardware or software??

    Hi,
It could be either Hardware or Software related, so try the following and let me know.
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp58501-59000/sp58517.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
Let Windows fully load - it will automatically load an audio driver, but just let this complete.  Then open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio.

Iphone6 doesn't play music (have tried obvious things like volume etc and plugged in headphones, connected to a speaker via bluetooth, and tried to play from the inbuilt speaker). Does anyone know what the problem is and how it can be resolved?

You can't buy the part from Creative as a spare.
I'm not sure how compatible other parts might be, but that would be a question for someone who really knows a lot about this area of electronics.
The Creative repair for this is likely to be expensi've, but the problem is most likely a broken solder connection than an actual new headphone socket. So if you know someone experienced in surface mount soldering you could probably get it repaired just with this.

when i make calls, all i can hear is static, and when i plug in headphones or turn the speaker on, it still doesnt work. but facetime, music, an apps sound still work. help? iphone 5

    Hello Delaney1130,
It sounds like you are getting static on both the receiver and the speaker when you make a call. I would use the troubleshooting from the following article to help resolve the issue named:
iPhone: Troubleshooting issues making or receiving calls
    https://support.apple.com/kb/TS3406
Toggle airplane mode: Tap Settings > Enable Airplane Mode, wait five seconds, then turn off airplane mode.
    Check your phone settings:
Check your Do Not Disturb settings: Tap Settings > Do Not Disturb.
Check for any blocked phone numbers: Tap Settings > Phone > Blocked.
See if Call Forwarding is turned on: Tap Settings > Phone > Call Forwarding.
Ensure that your software is up to date:
Check for a carrier settings update.
Check for an iOS software update.
Note: Some updates may require a Wi-Fi connection.
If the iPhone has a SIM card, reseat the SIM card.
If the iPhone 4 or iPhone 4s is on the Verizon network, dial *228 from the iPhone and select option 2 to update the Preferred Roaming List (PRL). The PRL determines the cellular towers the phone uses for cellular service, selecting those with the best signal strength.
Reset the network settings: Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Try to make or receive calls in another location.
Attempt to isolate to one network band:
If you're having the issue on LTE, disable LTE, if possible, and try again.
If you're having the issue on 3G/4G, disable 3G/4G, if possible, and try again.
Contact the carrier to check the following:
Your account is properly configured to use the specific iPhone that has the issue.
There are no localized service outages.
    Your account doesn't have a billing-related block.
Your calls don't have errors on the carrier system.
    Restore the phone as new.
If the above steps don't resolve the issue, go to an Apple Retail Store, carrier, Apple Authorized Reseller, or contact AppleCare to send the phone in for service.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

I am working on an app that has embedded video. The audio works fine through my speakers and headphones as it does for some of my coworkers, but I also have other coworkers who get audio through the headphones but not the speakers. It's a variety of devices, 4, 4S, and 5. Any thoughts?

If it happens with another set of headphones then the headphone jack in the iPod needs replacing.  Apple will only exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for  this price:

  • Ipod nano plays with headphones but not when plugged in to player

I have a nano 16gb 4th or 5th generation.  It has worked fine up until about a week ago.  It works if I plug in the headphones, but not when it is plugged into the car stereo or an iHome.  Any thoughts?

    If:
-you and your husband have the same generation iPod nano
-they both have the same latest software
-you tried the car stereo with the same iPod charging cord.
(with 32 pins connector I just wanted to make sure it is not the headphone plug)
this means that the problem is indeed with your iPod nano.
Since you also said that before last week everything worked fine, something must've gone wrong after that.
This could be software-related or hardware-related. Did you try to connect it to your computer? Does the computer recognise it? Can you still charge it?
If the computer does recognise the iPod it might be a good idea to 'repair' your iPod via iTunes.
Or try the Five R's: http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/nano5gen/# (more or less the same for 4th and 5th gen)
If your computer does not recognise it, it probably needs to be repaired. But since it is 4th or 5th generation I guess the warranty is void already, and you'll have to decide how much this is worth to you or if you wouldn't want to buy a new one.
