A HEART FELT THANK YOU TO EVERYONE!

A HUGE THANK YOU!!  to one and all here on this forum for all the help you have been and I am certain will continue to be to and for me.  You honestly have no idea how grateful I am for your kindness, patience with me.
You made my giant leap of faith and hope in getting my first MacBook REALLY PAY OFF in a huge way.
I am astounded at how nice everyone is here, how helpful, congenial, civil.  Having been around on internet message boards for 13+ years now, I can tell you this is NOT THE NORM.  Not once has anyone cursed me here, told me I was ignorant / stupid, made remarks about my family, insulted me, etc.  This is such a nice, refreshing change and I am so glad I found these Apple forums.

The next best thing is to whisper loud. LOL !
While I tried the totally white font color, it was hardest to detect.
And I was looking for an 'outline' font so as to be a ghost writer.
{This means any lighter & you'd have to drag the mouse through it to see any letters.}
Anyway, we who occasionally think up things to say in reply to serious issues
thank you for your interest, enthusiasm in heartfelt appreciation of your Mac,
and the greatness that Apple has helped others expose about themselves.
My dad still uses his Macs, daily. He's about 30 years older than you or me.
In some rather accomplished fields of interest, education, art, science.
Glad you found cause to be joyful.
Almost like adopting a cute puppy!
Good luck & happy computing!

  • The Quasi-Official Thank You Thread

Sadly, it's too easy to overlook the kindness and generosity of others. I'm aware of this and yet sometimes it's still elusive to me. This is why I'm starting the quasi-official thank you to everyone thread.
To all of the Arch developers: This is by far the best disto I've ever used and can't imagine that somewhere there's something better. I thank all of you for your hard work. I thank you for a forum to allow me to learn Linux and to help others that may need help. And, I think it's very cool that quite a few of you come into the forums to answer questions, ask for help, and generally "hang out".
To all of the people that write the software that I use: The title says it all. All of you are awesome. Thanks for teaching me that there's a choice.
(As a side note, some of the developers of this software are here in this forum; Although, they rarely make it known. Even one Enlightenment dev is sighting Arch's wiki as being what they want their setup to be! Lurker!!!)
To the submitters/developers of the stuff in AUR/Community: Cool! Everyone at takhis... Cool! stonecrest, you are Sonata, right? Cool! predatorfreak for setting my up with x264-svn and ffmpeg-svn. Cool! djclue for all of the help with WengoPhone. Cool! eyolf for "convincing" me that LaTeX is the best. Cool! Firmicus for TexLive. Cool! There's others, but you get the point.
To all of the Arch users: Thank you very much for your patience, your knowledge, and your will to help. This is truly a community, and it's you that makes it happen. Because of you I've upgraded from a Linux idiot to a Linux fool. I'm getting better!
Excuse me... I have to run off and wipe my eyes and blow my nose.

I've used Linux on and off for about a decade.  Most of the time, I would poke my head in, try the flavor-of-the-month distro, find it still didn't do what I want and return to Windows.  I used Arch back in 2005 and while it was the best of the bunch as far as my preferences, I felt it had a way to go.
I came back just a few weeks ago and almost everything has matured; it's mostly do to the community and the arch developers and maintainers.
Wiki:  By far the best community wiki for a linux distro (beats Ubuntu and Gento) and couldn't have gotten far without it.  Almost all of my questions were answered without even having to post. I've found similar issues in the forums and people responding with solutions, and I think I only posted a problem once or twice and both times it was one of those "I should have known better."
Tools: pacman is simple to use and robust.  The community AUR is great; maintainers keep all the software up-to-date and I don't have to wait for official arch packages for even-more-bleeding-edge packages like I did with Ubuntu.  Best thing is everything from AUR is compiled without me having to edit cflags or any other gentoo crap (no offense to gentoo users, but you guys are ricers, just admit it).
Performance:  Compiz on Ubuntu with my 7950GTX was still noticeably sluggish: unacceptable.  Arch Linux compiz is extremely responsive so I can actually keep all the bells and whistles on.  There was a debate over at the Ubuntu forums awhile back as to why Arch is faster, whatever it is (whether it's because of march=i686 is controversial), it works.

  • THANK YOU - b-noir, dmitry, &c.  Got it working so far...

First off an ENORMOUS THANK YOU to everyone who's been suggesting fixes for the problems with iTunes 5..... not least Dmitry Byk and others too numerous to mention - but especially b-noir !
    b My system :
Windows PC with XP Home Edition, Service pack 2, and all up to date via windows update. Also... Norton Internet Security (including Antivirus) 2005, and Webroot's Spy Sweeper aswell...all sitting behind a firewall router.
    b My Symptoms :
Happily clicked on the option to upgrade to iTunes5 after experiencing no trouble at all to date....
When I tried to install iTunes, at the end of the install process, the whole system locked solid....no Ctrl Alt Del, nothing ! Had to push the reset switch. Once re-set, the PC re-booted but had disabled my Active Desktop. Everything worked OK in this state, except when I tried to launch iTunes from the desktop when the computer would lock solid with the 'hourglass' next to the cursor - and only a punch of the re-set switch would re-boot it (...and on one occasion I tried leaving it for a couple of hours to see if it managed to 'unlock' itself before resorting to this !) No blue screens of doom, and no error messages - just a total 'lock-up' !
NB !!! I also suspect that I had not shut down my Norton 2005 while installing iTunes.
b OK...the fix so far..with HUGE THANKS to those mentioned above.
First I made a backup of my 'My iTunes' folder to ensure a copy of my files (should have done that ages ago !
Then removing iTunes was a problem - since it did not appear in Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs list !
Cue a load of dredging around the threads....
First I followed the advice on the Apple Support page: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976
I followed every step to clean the machine BUT did NOT try and install iTunes after every step. I just kept cleaning out the old stuff. I did the download of the windows cleanup utility....which found an iTunes entry even though it did not appear in control panel's add/remove programs.
I now followed Dmitry Byk's steps 1 and 2 here : Dmitry Byk, "Success! All fixes together in one thread...step-by-step...", 12:19am Sep 11, 2005 CDT
BUT at this stage did NOT start installing Quicktime, Bonjour and iTunes.
I did download the standalone programs from his links in step 3 & 4 and saved them to a folder ready for use later. Latest iTunes was downloaded from the main Apple link.
Then I followed someone else's advice on clearing out hidden iTunes/Quicktime folders hidden in Application Data folders, and also the Quicktime/iTunes folders in Program Files.... The step-by-step for this was found on a thread but the name and location I have lost and can't find again. IF ANYONE RECOGNISES THIS BIT PLEASE POST A LINK. The posting took you step by step through revealing the hidden folders and working through the various locations where iTunes & Quicktime leave remnants of folders. I can't remember the name of the person who put it up... although maybe b-noir pointed someone to it on another thread which I followed ?!
Once I'd finished all the delting... i switched off my pC, left it a while and then came back to start installing.....
    ### ii Before Installing I disconnected from the internet, and then disabled Norton Internet Security and Norton Antivirus by right clicking on the system tray (bottom right of the screen) icon and disbling protection until the next re-start.
i I also totally shut down my Spy Sweeper software, and then for good measure closed all the other programs with icons in the system tray at the bottom right of the screen.###
Next I installed the freshly downloaded Quicktime and just accepted the file associations at the end of the set-up procedure.
Next I re-booted the computer, and then went through all my 'shut downs' in the paragraph marked ### above.
Next step was to install Bonjour just like Dmitry Byk tells you in his posting (see link above).
Re-boot the computer, and do all the ##

hang on.... here's the rest !.......
...Re-boot the computer and do all the ### paragraph shut-downs again.
Next I installed iTunes from the setup program freshly downloaded from Apple. I unchecked the 'search for music' options and allowed the 'organise my music' option, and once the install had finished the computer seemed to be working fine.
Next I opened up Norton Internet Security and went to Status & Settings, Personal Firewall, Configure, and under the Programs tab ensure that the entried for iTunes and Bonjour were set to Permit All in the Internet Access column.
Now I closed everything and re-booted....
Once I'd done this I made sure that Norton Internet Security & A/Virus protections were running, reconnected to the internet and double clicked on my shiny new iTunes icon on the desktop......
AND IT WORKED OK with full access to the Music Store and all my music listed correctly.
That's the story so far.... My next steps are to do all my ### para shut-downs and install the latest iPod Updater Software as downloaded from Apple (did I mention that I cleared out all of those entries in Control Panel (Add/Remove programs) before starting the installs aswell ?!)
Once that's done I'll plug in my iPod and try a synch to check all's well...... I was lucky that the total 'lock-up' I was experiencing meant I couldn't even try to synch my iPod and so still had the use of it's music trouble free while I dredged around trying to fix iTunes.
I'll let you know if this works OK.....
Now some of the technically minded of you will be able to point out that some of the above steps might not be necessary, but hey - it worked for me and so i thought it was worth sharing in case someone else out there has the same crashing.
b A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to b-noir and Dmitry Byk in particular. Nothing I've written above is my own clever computer insiight - but a collection of the work done by the good people who post replies with assistance.
b Moreover - people like b-noir deserve a shiny new Mac System from Apple as a thank you for their tireless efforts to help people out. They are doing some serious corporate-reputation-recovery in their own time and deserve more of a reward than just our simple texted 'thank you's.....
b ii THANKS to all of you who have suggested fixes - it's greatly appreciated by simpletons like me !!!
    Cheers, Taffmaster

  • A massive THANK YOU

I just wanted to say a massive and warm THANK YOU to everyone in this forum for all the help they gave me when I came along and posted some very desperate questions. Some very strange questions. And some incredibly, horrendously stupid questions.
Thanks to everyones help I have just completed and delivered my first project.
And as it was my first project using FCP5, and my first Apple computer since using one 6 years ago whilst studying, and the fact that I really am not in the slightest bit I.T. literate - I truly would have struggled without the help and answers from you Folk.
My aims now are to finish my Apple Pro Cert training in FCP5 and DVD SP4. And to learn all the techincal language needed to understand my new computer and the software I have.
Alas, I have this feeling that I'll be back here posting questions again very soon - only this time I'm hoping that they won't be a silly and trivial as some of my previous questions.
Again, my warmest and most sincerest thanks.
    Alps

    Alps,
What a gracious note. Well done.
One more piece of unsolicited advice: If they want the masters, don't hand them over until the check has cleared the bank.
    cheers,
    x

  • HAPPY XMAS AND A HUGE THANK YOU....

I just want to say THANK YOU to everyone who has contributed to these forums over the last year.
As the occasional avid reader, I never cease to be amazed at the contribution of you folks to helping us to achieve our goals.
As someone from across the water in PAL territory, I am for one REALLY grateful for your input, that on many occasions has helped me - even with my more dumb questions.
I know that sometimes we are requested to LITFM (look in the f**** manual) and sometimes that is justified, however sometimes that is not always that easy. And that is when you guys step in to the breach, and all you get in return is some lousy points (and the occasional grief from some of our less grateful questioners)
Well if I could buy you all a big fat Xmas present - I would!!
My growth this year as a film maker and editor has been considerably enhanced by your help (and I have the luxury of an ex BBC editor who comes in to train me 2 days every month)
So that's it. No question, no dumb request, just a big thanks to you ALL (even the ones who have only contributed once or twice).
    I salute you.
Happy Christmas and may all your dreams come true in 2007.
    Stephen

  • Thank You SQL Developer Team

I would like to take a minute to say "Thank You" to everyone who are working on SQL Developer. I use SQL Developer regularly to quickly view database objects and table data.
Since the release of APEX 3.0.1 and SQLDeveloper 1.2, I have been using SQL Developer to move my APEX applications between Development, Test, QA, and Production instances - works like a champ! I have the development pages and administrative pages disabled in Test, QA and Prod, so SQL Developer (in my opinion) has helped plug a security risk in my APEX applications.
I know developers - and project managers - don't get to hear much praise for what they do. Seems like it is too easy for users to point out flaws in applications. But, if users find flaws in applications, they must be using it...
Thanks again for everything you do.
    Dan

So did I (for about 50K).
At the end I managed to export in Text format, then opened that with Excel.
    Hope that works for you,
    K.

  • Random thanks: Thank you, forum developers!

I just wanted to make a quick post to say thank you to everyone who works on the forum.
The recent forum upgrade is much appreciated -- it's great to see all the little improvements that the it brought. Also much appreciated is the ArchLinux theme, which is beautiful and definitely deserves praise.
Anyway, thanks again guys. Keep up the great work.

Well, we already have a thread dedicated for that.  There is no point in opening a new one.

  • Apple Felt Us.. Thank You Heartedly (F)

    Helo folks
Apple made the ipad and released it with a side rotation lock switch, and it has been changed to a mute notifications after the 4.2 update, after this move, the apple discussions have been throw a ocean of posts complaining of this change, one of the big main complaints were like, its not acceptable to change a hardware usage from somethhing to something totally else, while this else thing was able to be done through the settings, despite all that, the change was unoptioned.. After a oceans of complaints, including me, about that unaccepted by many change.. Apple has finally felt and announced the "you will be able to customize the use of the rotation lock/mute button of how to use after you edit by going through settings and toggle to choose your favorite option" .. YES! thats actually a very democratic move! Yes.. This is how a splendid reputation companies deal with their addicted customers.. Apple, I complained about it yes, and now you have proved that you could hear us. This is a message from Kuwait, probably far away in distances from your original location in California, but in my heart you're not as far aa you're geographically, you're inside my heart. I am new at loving Apple since i only had bought my ipad since 6 months ago, now Im in a deep relationship with it.
Thank you Apple for trying to work for us, to make our life easier and better.
    Khaled from Kuwait.

I make this post to thank Apple and then im being called a troll.. Never mind.. Thanks all
When you keep making ridiculous posts contradicting everything you've already told us in the past...like using your iPad even though the screen and/or home button is broken...that makes you a troll.

    Hi everyone.
My ipod classic (160 GB) was purchased in the year 2009.
I'm unsuccessful in getting it charged either through a USB port of my laptop or through an apple adapter connected to DC.
Please suggest me on my options. Thank you.

Hello everyone, I am an electrical engineer, I am working on voice control of electric instuments, I like to use siri alication of "Apple", who can help me, thank you all

If you mean that you want to license and obtain the programming code to Siri from Apple so that you can use it in your own devices, that will almost certainly not be possible. Apple almost never licenses their exclusive technologies to others. You can try writing their corporate office:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/
and inquiring, but I would wager that you will not even receive a reply, much less have Apple be interested in licensing the Siri technology to you. You may have better luck talking to Nuance about their voice recognition technology:
    http://www.nuance.com/for-partners/index.htm
If that's not what you mean, please post back and clarify.
    Regards.

    Hello andreabn90
If you can't remember your security questions go to  Express Lane.
select iTunes from the list, then iTunes store.        On the next screen select account Management.          There, select iTunes store account security and write that you would like to reset your security questions and / or answers.
You should get an eMail reply over the next 24 hours.
