A knackered hard drive, and a knackered hard drive!

Hi all, I have a slight hard drive problem. I know this is not directly linked to this iBook forum, but this happens to be my favourite place to be with all you friendly people, hope you can help me out.
I have a Western Digital 40GB Hard drive, crap, I know... who uses 40GB these days eh? It was in my WinXP PC, and I needed that because my internal HD in my iBook G4 is half corrupted (needed partitioning before I could install 10.3.9).My good friend and I spent half the night trying to get the full 30GB on my internal Mac hard drive, but it was having none of it. Partitioning was my only option. I'm stuck with 14.04GB, and that is all I can squeeze out of it.
Anyway, back to the point, my Western Digital 40GB HD needed an enclosure which I bought from eBay. This particular enclosure I bought, was broken on delivery (the yellow power cable supplying the hard drive had broken off the circuit board, it wasn't until I phoned up my buddy and yelled for help. I fixed this wire issue and now the enclosure is working.) But... my 40GB hard drive isn't a 40GB hard drive... yeah work that one out. For a long time my Windows XP machine has been reporting that it's only got 23GB to play with. I thought this was normal until I actually LOOKED at the hard drive. The mac is saying the same... 23GB to play with. My friend and I decided to experiment a little with this, by putting the hard drive in his Linux PC, only to find that the hard drive is reporting the full 40GB. Strange, and we were BOTH baffled.
He decided to try putting something on the hard drive after we formatted it as HFS+ (Journaled). Still showing 23GB on the Mac, he put a film on the hard drive taking up 4.3GB. The film worked and played without a problem. Then after a discussion, we experimented again by putting the HD back in the Linux computer, and it said that my Hard Drive had 40GB of free space. What, even after the film was put on... should be saying 36GB. I failed my GCSE Maths, but come on, my unborn son could have figured that out. 40GB - 4GB used by a film = 36GB?????? Apparently NOT! Both of us looked at each other with the facial expression of... 'What the......!'
So if anyone has ANY suggestions to this... "thing", It would be appreciated. I would love a full 40GB on the enclosure, I know the internal 30GB Hard Drive is knacked, but can a hard drive really report the wrong info like that? This is the strangest thing I have ever come across in 9 years of computing.
Hope you are ALL well, and didn't eat too many Easter Eggs... my 2 were gone within, ooh 48 hours. Heh heh!!

The question becomes, after erasing, select the partition selection of Disk Utility, is what does it tell you about how many partitions are there? Under Volume Scheme there should be no separators, and it should be clear to the very bottom. If it isn't you have more than one partition, and should try to call it just one partition. Be sure you are selecting the icon naming the kind of drive it is, and not the one naming the name of the drive as it appears on the desktop on the far left after selecting the Partition section of Disk Utility. Change current to 1 partition if necessary.

  • Can I set Time Machine to backup both my hard drive and an external hard drive?

Hi. I've been working with a lot of family video lately and my internal hard drive has filled up significantly. iMovie doesn't seem to have a good archiving facility like Adobe InDesign which I use at work were all the relevant files are gathered together into one folder. Apple advised me to relocate my movie files to an external hard drive and herein lies my query.
Is there a way for me to set Time Machine to backup both my iMac's internal drive and the external hard drive that would contain my movie files? I've been using Time Machine for my backups for a few years now, but backing up the external as well has me stumped. If Time Machine could be used then all the necessary file accociations etc would be safely backed up as well - that's why I don't want to have to manually backup the external.
    Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Thanks so much Pondini!!  You just quickly answered a question that none of the Mac people in 3 stores or Apple Care have been able to answer. If you can format it HFS+ (any variation of Mac OS Extended), it will work.  If not, it won't.
I'm not too surprised about the Apple Stores, as they don't get much training on Time Machine.  But AppleCare sure ought to know.
Oh...what about if the external drive is an array...like a Drobo with it's own proprietary formatting...I guess that would not work...??
I've never used a Drobo.  A number of folks here have used them as their Time Machine drives, but I don't recall seeing anyone try to back one up with TM, so can't say for sure.  But if you can format it as HFS+ (any variation of Mac OS Extended), it will work.  If not, it won't.
At least part of the reason is, Time Machine uses the File System Event Store, a hidden log of changes that OSX keeps on each Mac-formatted disk/partition, to figure out what's changed and needs to be backed-up.  See How Time Machine works its Magic for details.
See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #32 for details and considerations of backing-up multiple volumes with Time Machine.
However, even if it will work, that may not be your best strategy, depending on your circumstances:
Since Time Machine keeps copies of things you've changed or deleted, the destination needs to be considerably larger than the data being backed-up.  How much larger varies widely depending on how you use your Mac, but a general "rule of thumb" is, it needs at least twice the space to be able to keep a reasonable "depth" of backups for you.
If you have a large internal HD, fairly full, plus a large external HD, and the files on the external don't change frequently, you might want to use Time Machine for the internal, and a different app to a different disk or partition, on a different schedule, for the external.  Especially if space is a consideration, you might not need to keep previous versions of files on the externals.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for some alternatives.

I did not create the file to be read-only. I created to be able to continue to add to it as I work on it.

  • Can I use an External hard drive and my computers hard drive for apple tv

Can I use an External hard drive and my computers hard drive for apple tv

If you mean to hold iTunes content to stream then the answer is yes.  Your iTunes library  folder and the media usually live in the same location, but media can be in a different or several different locations.  The external drive wuld have to e connected and powered to stream media to AppleTV.

  • How can i put music drive AND a time machine drive on wireless network?

Right now I have a MacBook with ONE external drive with my music and movies… and ANOTHERexternal drive for my backups.
I would LOVE to figure out how to hook both the music drive and the time machine drive to a wireless router so the only plug I have for my laptop is the power plug.
I already have a NetGear wireless router… but it only has ethernet ports out, no usb.
What would be the best/easiest way to network these two external hard drives?
    tx!

Another option, where you can still utilize your existing drives, is to consider a dedicated NAS device that supports both Time Machine and iTunes functions. One such NAS device is the Synology DS415+. It would be far superior than what you have now. Albeit at an additional cost.

  • What is the difference between a Serial ATA 3 TB Drive and 3 TB Fusion Drive

What is the difference between a Serial ATA @ 7200 rpm 3 TB Drive and 3 TB Fusion Drive

A Fusion Drive is a proprietary combination of a hard drive and a solid state drive (SSD) engineered to dynamically move data you use most onto the fast SSD - so it's a lot faster than the equivalent hard drive, but much cheaper than a pure SSD storage solution would be.

I've tried all of the suggested solutions, but I still can't get my cd drive recognised on my laptop.  If I delete the driver and reboot, the cd drive appears, but as soon as the driver automatically installs, the driver disappears into the Q: drive, which is not accessible and neither is the CD drive

I had the same or similar problem after installin iTunes 11 on my Acer Laptop with Vista. The new iTunes ran but I
completely lost access to my CdRom/DVD drive. Error Code 19 was displayed in Windows Device Manager. Found out
this is more widespread of a problem than expected.  After trying several forum recommended fixes, the Only thing that gave me back my CdRom drive was doing a Windows Restore to a date prior to iTunes 11 install.  I got my drive back but it also restored me to the prior 10.0.7.21 vers of iTunes which no longer worked due to missing files. iTunes help
recommended a Reinstall.  I am reluctant to do that for several reason.  That's where I am at for now until I find out if there are any other risks for using iTunes 11 vs. Registry Errors vs. Losing access to my CdRom drive.  Brad

  • I purchased Apple TV. I had to upgrade my OS to Lion which I did. I cannot get Lion to open because time machine is backing up to two hard drives, my external hard drive and my internal hard drive.  How do I just get the backups going to the external? thx

I have a desktop Mac.  I bought Apple tv and wanted to connect my photos to the tv.  I learned that I had to upgrade my OS as I didn't have icloud capability.  I purchased and downloaded Lion.  I cannot open it however, because when I go to select the hard drive to install Lion onto, the dialogue box says that I cannot open it in either my external hard drive or the internal hard drive because of the backups to time machine.  I have tried the 'fix' of moving the backup folder to the trash and then putting it on the desktop, but I still can't access either one of the drives to install Lion.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

The current OS is Mountain Lion 10.8.3, so I if the purchase was recent, that is what you should have.
It should be possible to see what disk space is being used by opening the Disk Utlity in the Applications>Utilities folder.   It looks like both disks are set as TM disks:
If you have Time Machine backup of both the internal and external disks and want to rationalise the system to only backup one, then set the TM preferences>options to exclude volumes as required:
When you download the installer from the Apple Store (MAS) it will come up with a dialogue to run it.  It will then ask which disk you wish to install the system on.  Is this where you have got to, before it says they are both unavailable?

Will time machine on Lion, Mac OS 10.7, automatically back up both the internal hard drive and the internal solid-state drive both inside a 27" iMac?

    so i fire up the old mac and i notice that both my external hard drive (used for time machine) and internal hard drive 1 have both disappeared; i went into disk utility and found the internal drive; it showed as not mounted so i mounted it; BINGO, there it is..... but, no ext drive in disk utility, so i hooked it up to my other mac and there it is in all its glory; i'm not sure what to do next;

Finder->Preferences->Sidebar->Devices->select Hard Disks and External Disks, for starters. Then, OPTION-click and hold on the Finder's Dock icon and select Relaunch.

  • Trying to install iwork '09 from dvd on new imac with no dvd drive.....iwork is brand new (bought off ebay) in unopened box....I have at my disposal an older imac with dvd drive and a 16GB thumb drive...what is best way to load iwork on the new imac?

bought my mom a new imac this xmas...didn't realize it has no dvd drive....just picked up a new unopened version of iwork '09 for her to use off of ebay....need to get it loaded on the new dvddriveless imac......I have an imac at my house with a drive and a thumb drive i could bring over to her house if I could somehow burn an image of the iwork dvd on the thumb drive...is this possible?  is there a better solution other than buying an external dvd drive?

First use Disk Utilty to make a disk image of the iWork disc on your iMac. Then there are two easy ways to install on your mothers new iMac. One is to copy to your USB thumb drive, visit your mother and install from the thumb drive. The other is to use a free upload and download service like www.wetransfer.com. Upload the .dmg disk image via www.wetransfer.com, then your mother downloads and installs. After installation you'll need to update iWork for Mountain Lion compatibility.

  • I tried to download images from a jump drive and now the jump drive seems blank. How can I recover the images? Is there a software program out there to do this reliably?

I took photographs with my Lumix camera (JPG) and put the sd chip into a jump drive and put them into my usb port to load. The images never loaded and now the sd chip has no images when I put it back into the camera. What can I do to restore the images? Is there Mac compatible software out ther to restore them? I am running a Macbook Pro OS X v 10.7.5. Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure I can help you with this situation. Odds are you probably can't recover the images if they aren't hidden in the card, but this just seems to be a fluke. I've had flash drives that be plugged in only to find out that was their iminant death.

  • Copy the SQL Binaries and Data to another drive and then change the drive letter to previous drive letter

    Hi All,
We have SQL Server 2012 SP1 installed on E drive (which means SQL Binaries, Database and LOGs) are in the same drive E, we are not able to backup the SQL Server because according to Backup Vendor their is a problem with the DISK E which is why the backup
is not successful, We have added one more drive with the same space, we have stopped SQL Server services and copy each and every thing from E drive to new drive and changed the current E Drive to K and changed the new drive to E, after that when we tried to
start SQL Service but it was not starting, we have again reverted back the original drive to E and service was successfully started, please note here that SQL server service logon is NT service / local service. Please help us that how to do achieve this as
we are using the same E drive and OS should not know any thing. Please help us to copy and then change the drive letter to E so that we can delete the old drive.

You should not have done this. Even if you install complete SQL Server on Separate dedicated drive few binaries would always go on system drive that is C drive so your idea of moving files to other drive would sure create a problem. As a fact you cannot
move SQL Server complete installation from one drive to other apart from uninstalling and reinstalling again.
Copy it back an hope fully you would be able to restart. Why should you take a product which allows you to change sql server drive its a bad product. I guess backup engineer does not how to configure backup agent

  • Dv9000 laptop dvd drive and webcam not found. drive initializes on boot but does not show up.

The DVD/CD-Rom drive will initialize and will read a CD when inserted but it does not show up in the BIOS or in Windows. It's a Lighscribe drive. The webcam was not found either. I recently reloaded this machine for a friend back to the factory setup. Installed all additional software and everything is working but the drive and the camera. Is there any way to actually test these devices for failure? Or is there a patch or a software package I may be missing? It's a dv9000 but it has dv9007 on the bottom. And an AMD processor.  If anybody has any ideas I would greatly appreciate the help.

    Spoiler (Highlight to read)
It does not show up in either one. The camera or the DVD drive.  No X's or error Triangles. I guess they could have gone bad at the same time but that's not likely. It would be one heck of a coiencidence. I am wondering if there is an alternate chipset driver or patch. Maybe a controller driver? The system has dv9000 on the display and dv9700 on the model # tag. I believe 1 is Inter and the other NVidia. But the Factory image installed the NVidia drivers.
