A lightroom preset to produce a RAW conversion that always looks like the camera-processed JPG?

Hi,
Any tips on how to make a Lightroom preset that will render the RAW file in a manner that looks remotely the same as the picture displayed when shot?
I'm not talking about camera calibration > camera standed, portrait etc.
With Lightrooms clunky default adjustments the histogram looks correct; i.e. the way it did when it was shot. The image also looks horrible; clipped blacks, too contrasty etc. because it arbitrarily boosts Brightness +50, Contrast +25
When I zero the settings the histogram shifts completely away from the way it was shot, as if it was underexposed, which is not correct. I've tested this with perfect exposures using a GMB colour chart.
I guess the camera is showing me a histogram of the JPEG after it has been processed.
Is there a quantifiable way to replicate this other than playing with the sliders until the RAW roughly matches the JPG and then saving the preset?
Thanks.
Update - I'm using a Canon 5DMkII and a 1DsMkII

Good grief. When I photograph a color chart, under controlled lighting conditions, exposed perfectly, that is what I want to see as the default RAW conversion, with acurate values. In fact with camera calibrations that is pretty much how it works. It's not open to interpretation. Blacks have a certain value, neutral 8, neutral 6.8 etc.
If not, then give me the tools to accomplish this quickly. In Photoshop I can shoot a scene under controlled lighting, shoot a color chart in the first frame, create a custom curve and apply this to every subsequent shot. There is a rough way to do this in LR but it's quite a backward step.
THEN I can have a filed day, changing whatever I want, but I do not like randomly dragging sliders until it "looks ok". I stopped doing that my first year of Photoshop when I learned how to use the color sampler correctly.
"If you shoot raw (as opposed to JPEG) then YOU have the power and capability to decide what stuff is supposed to look like. "
I understand I have the power to decide what stuff looks like. Nothing I have said so far argues against this. I'm asking for an accurate baseline, from which I can let my creativity run wild.
" I encourage people to ignore the LCD and go with your guts", "If you are lazy and don't want to be bothered rendering the scene, yes, I can understand why you would want somebody else to control the interpretation of the scene"
The LCD and the histogram are a quick way of evaluating correct exposure for a shot, so that blacks are not clipped and highlights are not blown out and lost forever. They are standard TOOLs of modern photography. To not use them is illogical. It would be like instructing people not to use the camera's inbuilt light meter, because it's "more creative" without it.
It does not have to be one extreme or the other. People seem to be saying "reject the jpg - it means nothing. Let the artist in you decide" and yet they blithely accept the default settings Lightroom gives. My point is, the camera rendering is a good REFERENCE POINT, far more accurate to what you saw on the day, and far more relevant, than LR's adjustments.
Once I have an accurate rendering, quickly, THEN I can be creative and enjoy the power and flexibility of RAW. If nothing else, it's a much faster way to work.

Eww, thanks for your reply, as it makes good sense, and common sense is practical when you walk into an Apple store.
I guess all the reviews and great specs of the new MB pro's made me want one...
I should probably use my current setup till it is totally outdated or simply is beyond repair.
I could ask Santa Claus for one, but by than, the 2012's will be coming out..:)
Thanks Eww for your reply, IAN....

  • Camera raw conversion for photoshop elements 12 . Camera Nikon D4S

Hi i have an apple Mac version 10.9 os.  I have Adobe photoshop Elements 12.  I just got a new camera Nikon D4S.  Photoshop Elements will not import my RAW phots (NEF) taken with the new D4S camera.  It gives me a message: Could not complete request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the Camera Raw installed version.  I uploaded a plug in 8.4 to my computer. Then tried to convert the photos in the D4S file folder. It would not convert the photos. The message from the DNG plugin said:  The Source folder does not contain any supported camera raw files.  How can I upload the RAW (NEF) photos taken with the D4S to photoshop elements 12?  Need help as I need to edit all these pictures.
I am having the same issue uploading the RAW (NEF) D4S photos into Adobe Lightroom 5 as well.
Thus I can not edit any of these photos.  I am very frustrated and could not find or locate a phone number to contact Adobe Elements for assistance, so if you have a phone number or email address for Adobe Photoshop Elements support or Adobe Lightroom support, please let me know.
    thank you

  • Getting RAW look like the embedded JPEG

This has been asked before, but I can't find the answer, so I will ask
    again.
How do I get Lightroom to make the RAW file START it's adjustments with
the full in-camera adjustment settings, so the RAW initially looks
somewhat like it would if I had just shot JPEG?
When processing Canon RAW images (we use a mix of 10D, 20D and 5D
bodies), the initial 'unadjusted' image sometimes (often) looks VERY
different from the camera adjusted JPEG of the same photo. The reason
for the difference is that the JPEG has the camera adjustments applied,
but the RAW doesn't. You don't need to shoot RAW+JPEG to see the effect,
because the embedded preview in the RAW file is an adjusted JPEG, and
many programs use that to display previews.
The problem is that sometimes the JPEG looks darn nice because the
camera did a pretty darn good job processing the photo, but the RAW
looks flat, bland and lifeless. And it takes a whole lot of futzing
around to get it to look 'as good' as the dumbed down in-camera JPEG.
So is there some setting that I'm missing that reads in the full
'as-shot' settings of the camera, and correlates them to initial
settings for the RAW? It would be nice to be able to just tweak the
    image from that point forward.

    >Obviously cameras can vary in the particular model range, so doing the For (or similar) calibration will be specific to your camera.
Since the output of the default JPEG rendering pipeline of current DSLRs is anything but calorimetrically accurate (it is designed to be pleasant, not to be used in a metrology laboratory), calibrating for accuracy is going to do little to make LR RAW output and in-camera JPEG processing come closer.
And while the current incarnation of LR provides significant control over color, I still think it is not sufficient to reproduce some of the effects used in OEM RAW developers and in-camera JPEG processing.
In particular, I am not convinced it is possible to reproduce Canon's handling of reds within LR using presets that would reproduce canon "Normal" picture style.

  • Lightroom: Why does auto white balance no longer work after changing the camera calibration profile?

I'm using NEF raw files from Nikon.
Lets say for example I import a NEF file into Lightroom (v4) and click on 'auto' for white balance. The white balance in the image is  adjusted correctly (somewhat). However, if I then change the camera profile (in the camera calibration section) from 'adobe standard' to 'camera standard' then the white balance in the image becomes very wrong. I then have to set the white balance back to 'as shot' and correct it manually instead.
Why would 'auto white balance' no longer work just because I change the profile from 'adobe standard' to 'camera standard'?
    Any ideas?

    Works as expected here...
Which Lr version and what OS??

  • Imported RAW images badly corrupted, looks like red paint splashed all over the sky.  Photoshop and Iphoto have no problem with the images from my D800E.  Aperture worked fine for me in June with the same camera.  The Nikon software shows no problem.

I am having a problem importing my images into Aperture 3 from my Nikon D800E.  The images appear as if red paint was splashed across the sky.  The Nikon software used to transfer from the camera does not show this problem and Photoshop 6 is fine with the images exported as jpg from the Nikon software.  Aperature does not even like the jpg images usable by Photoshop.  I am suspecting that Aperture is not correctly using the camera raw file.  Also, the histograms are radically different between the corrupted images and the Photoshop (good) versions.  Aperture worked just fine for me in June with the same camera.  All drivers and software are current as of this posting.  Anyone else out there seen this before??

Are you sure you do not have Highlight Hot & Cold Areas turned on? (View->Highlight Hot & Cold Areas)?
The bug in Digital Camera raw only affected Raw images. In your first post you wrote:
Aperature does not even like the jpg images usable by Photoshop
If the JPG's have the same problem then it isn't this bug.

  • Working with RAW-Image-Sequences: keyframing parameters of the camera-raw editor

    Hey guys,
is it, somehow, possible, to set keyframes for the parameters of the camera-raw editor, when I work with a raw-image-sequence?
I would like to keyframe the white balance and exposure for a timelapse shot in raw-images.
Maybe there's a trick with expressions?
    Thanks for your help.

  • I use RAW files from a Canon 1d Mark 4 and a 1dX. When I open the images they briefly look like the preview thumbnail and then suddenly lose about 1 stop of light, lose sharpness and turn slightly green. Please help

I have used Aperture since it was launched and have for the last 4 years , only shot RAW . I have not encountered this problem before , but it is ruining my photography and would I therefore love some help please .

William , thank you. I feel that the loss of half to one stop of exposure is the easiest issue to remedy. How do I fix the green tinge and the loss of sharpness ? I assume I merely use Aperture or a plug-in to re-sharpen the photos and adjust the colour balance back to the originals . Is there a fast way of doing this in bulk , as I have a project with several thousand files ?
By the way...I sort of understand that HTP can change the colour range and the exposure  ( I think !! ) , but why does it soften the sharpness ?

  • Looking for the camera raw plugin for Nikon d3100

    Hello!
I'm familiar with how to install a camera raw plugin for photoshop.  However, I've had a difficult time finding the correct download link for the Nikon d3100 for ps cs4.  Will you please point me in the right direction with a link or otherwise?  Thanks so much!

ACR - Adobe Camera Raw versions are specific to the version of Photoshop you have.
They don't provide updates to your version for cameras that were released much later.
You need to download the LATEST version of DNR Converter and use this to convert a FOLDER that contains your D3100 files to DNGs which then can be opened in your older version of ACR for Photoshop CS4.
The Adobe DNG Converter, a free utility that converts files from more than 350 cameras to DNG, enables you to easily convert camera-specific raw files to a more universal DNG raw file.

  • Fuji Raw Conversion Software as External Editor in Lightroom

Anyone know whether Fuji's Hyper Utility RAW conversion software (if I remember the name correctly) will work as an External Editor in Lightroom. (Just read an article by a Nikon photographer who uses Capture NX this way in Lightroom and wonder whether the same is possible for Fuji.)

Thanks; I guess my question (which I did not state clearly) is whether if, at the end of processing in HV-S3 and "Save" the saved file (likely a TIFF) will automatically appear in the Lightroom Library associated with the original RAW file; this would be the chief advantage over just opening the folder with the file in HV-S3 to begin with, but it occurs to me that this may be a dumb question (as I've just downloaded and begun to use Lightroom and can't experiment with HV-S3 yet as it has not yet been released, but will be shortly). Thanks again.
