A list of Resources for Learning Lightroom

I made this page in my own 'photoblog' to tell about many of the fine resources I have rounded up for learning Lightroom:
http://www.eleanorstravels.com/photoblog-issue16.htm I can't remember when we've had so much when program first comes out. Martin Evening's book is truly excellent. Let me know if there are others I should add.

Thanks, Eleanor, but you seemed to have left out blogs by some of the regular posters here. I won't list them, becuase I will leave someone out. Also, the consensus seemed to be that the Jack Davis presets cluttered up more than they helped.

  • What are the best resources for learning JSP?

In your experience, what have been the best resources for learning JSP? I am new to this, and so far have been plugging away at a "Dummies" book. Hopefully there are other inexpensive ways (I checked the book out at the library), to learn it, and possibly even less boring (though I doubt it). I can deal with the boring, but I was wondering if I was going about learning it the best way.

  • Websites, books, and other resources for learning to use Premiere Pro

What websites, books, tutorials, and other resources have you found useful for learning to use Premiere Pro?
I want to make sure that we have a comprehensive list of good resources for Premiere Pro. See this page for a list of high-quality After Effects resources that I put together; I want something like this for Premiere Pro.
I'll start. In no particular order, here are some resources that I've found valuable:
    this forum (of course)
Premiere Pro Help documents and Help & Support pages in several languages
Community Help search for Premiere Pro
Getting started with Premiere Pro by video2brain
Premiere Pro CS5: Learn By Video by video2brain
video tutorials on Adobe TV and Video Workshop
Premiere Pro CS5 Classroom in a Book
    Premiere Pro team blog
Premiere Pro team Facebook page and Twitter feed
PPBM5 (Premiere Pro CS5 benchmark) for performance information
Best of Premiere Pro by Eran Stern

    > I see mention above of Lynda.com, but either missed Total Training, or perhaps they have merged?
    I didn't mention Lynda.com.
And, no, Total Training and Lynda.com certainly haven't merged.
Total Training has some good Premiere Pro stuff, but it's not the first place that I'd point someone for Premiere Pro.

  • Which book is best for learning Lightroom 5 for a complete beginner?

I'm an Aperture user and as everyone has heard the news, a lot of us are considering switching over. I went through the Apple pro-training aperture, logic, and FCP books and loved the format of those. I've been reviewing my options for LR5 books on Amazon and I see a couple, Kelby, Evening, and The Adobe Classroom in a book. I kind of like the classroom in a book format as it resembles the Apple book's format. Which book is best for learning LR5, from a complete beginner's perspective?

I would avoid Kelby like the plague. I didn't like his book, I felt his chapters on the Library module were effectively useless and off the mark.
I would start with the free e-book Lightroom 5 - Free Quick Start Guide PDF eBook | The Lightroom Queen
I would also watch some videos at Products | Lightroom | Adobe TV

  • Good Resources for learning Bash Scripting

I know, I should probably be lectured for the fact that I'm a heavy Linux user who programs in a variety of languages, but is very limited when it comes to bash scripting itself.
So, I've decided now is the time to learn. It seriously beats writing configuration scripts in C, I think (that's not really what C is used for these days...).
So, anyone know of some good (preferably free) resources on learning Bash?
    Edit:
OR if someone has any suggested alternatives (e.g., Python as a replacement?), do tell.

  • Insufficient resources for learning Portlets

There is very less study material on the sun website or otherwise for learning portlets. I have just started working on Portlets, and am facing difficulty due to this. If anyone can suggest me a good book to get statrt with, I would be grateful
Most of the resources are vendor specific. primarily Weblogic, and Websphere, I am using uPortal which complies with JSR 168.

I have actually been following Unity for a few months. It looks pretty **** nice to say the least but the $600.00 for the basic is a little steep so I haven't committed just yet. I am currently using Cocos2d (http://code.google.com/p/cocos2d-iphone/) to play around with making 2d games and have been going though the excellent tutorials for SIO2 3D engine (http://www.sio2interactive.com/HOME/HOME.html). SIO2 is shaping up to be a really nice engine with superb integration with Blender (which I am also slowly learning at the same time).

  • Online resources for learning PHP/MySQL?

I would really appreciate knowing which online resources people really have used and found valuable for learning PHP/MySQL.
And I'm well aware that Google is my friend - I'm looking for personal recommendations.  :-)
    Thanks very much in advance,
    Patty Ayers | www.WebDevBiz.com
Free Articles on the Business of Web Development
Web Design Contract, Estimate Request Form, Estimate Worksheet

Well, I got some good websites
    www.w3schools.com
    www.phpeasystep.com
    www.phpfreaks.com
And a lots! Google baby, google.. But as what David says, not all websites is up to date, you have to assure that. Other option, you may refer to PHP books. There's a lot too.

  • Noob Question 19: Resources For Learning Videography

...or whatever you wanna call it. I need some suggestions for books/web sites that can teach me more about video production... not just editing in Premiere, but stuff like lighting and so on. For example, a friend of mine suggested a light box and it clearly helps him a -lot-. I'd like to know where to get them, what's a good deal, how to use it, and so on.
Ideas for learning how to film properly?
    Thanks!
    ---JC

    Hi Jim,
Looks great. I may look at the local community college for a similar course. In the mean time, I was hoping for something like
'Using shop lights, cardboard and duct tape for key lighting just like the pros.'
Seriously. That's about my budget. So I'll shut up now.
    Thanks,
    ---JC

  • Recommended resources for learning how to use Motion?

Specifically for learning the ropes of how to do kinetic typography, are there any recommended books or video tutorials?

launch iTunes, goto the Podcast section and search for
    MacBreak Studio
    and
    CreativeCow
for me excellent sources. It's no 'from zero' content, more focussing on one issue/aspect, but teaching 'drive by' many, many basics and specialities. as a non native English speaker, I do appreciate the perfect audio/speaking ...

  • Good resources for learning how to use Aperture's adjustments

I'm a long-time visual artist who is just now getting into photography. I own both Lightroom and Aperture, and I must say that, for me, Aperture's interface and philosophy are my favorites. I love the way it handles photo organization. I have one problem, however. Being a relative photographic newbie, I have a terrible time with the adjustments. I seem to have a much easier time making good-looking adjustments in Lightroom. In Aperture, I just aimlessly noodle around, make a mess, and undo all my changes regularly.
I just found the Apple manual on making adjustments. I was wondering what other resources you more experienced photographers used to learn your way around.
    Thanks,
    Mark

Thanks I have that one on order from Amazon even as we speak. As an update, I've also found some information on bagelturf.com, and it looks as though Aperture Users Professional Network is going to start a 7-part series on Adjustments in Aperture. That sounds just like what the doctor ordered.
O'Reilly's "Inside Aperture" site also seems worthwhile. I'm sure you all know about these. I'm glad they're there. I've subscribed to a couple of podcasts as well.

  • Best resources for learning InDesign scripting

    Hello,
I am teaching myself scripting in InDesign and having problems with the help systems.
I read the scripting docs from Adobe, examine free scripts and use the help in the ExtendScript Toolkit but I lack an education in javascript to really do well.
What books or online resources do you think could help me go from tinkerer to amateur scripter ?
    Thanks in advance,
    emmanuel.

In my experience as a learner, there is no substitute for trial and error. Olav Kvern's very helpful comments in his numerous examples (with very helpful explanatory comments) are a great start, because they enable anyone to start experimenting on their own. And I return to his examples practically every day. They answer such simple questions as "How do I open a new document?", as well as giving very clear, well-commented examples of stuff that I would otherwise find completely impossible -- such as "How do I rotate a text frame around the top-left corner?"
I'm no longer a complete beginner, but I am very much a learner still, and I think trail and error is THE way to learn anything, especially scripting. When I started off, it was about 99% error. Now I've got it down to about 75% error. But I nearly always end up with a script that works, after a struggle that is every bit as enjoyable as it is maddening, and it's a huge sense of achievement when I get there. Some gullible folks have even paid me money for this -- I have one in the pipeline for tomorrow!
Rather than reading too much stuff written by experts, I would urge you to experiment as much as possible, just by playing around to see what works and what doesn't work. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't work first time. I'll bet even scripting experts (most of whom are on this list) fail on almost every first attempt. After you get one modest script to work, and then another, you'll build up a sort of "library of past scripting achievements" in your head (and in your scripts panel). Nowadays, every time I start a script, I think of how I successfully managed to do something like it before -- and I build from there.
Good luck with it -- Jeremy

  • Resource for learning OS X Server

I am lookimg for a good resource (preferaly online) about the in's and out's of OS X Server. I am really curious about where the data resides in the case of contacts  and calendars.
Is the master data on the server and copies on tne clients (other Macs on the network) or does the data reside soley on tne server?
A good resource to answer this question, nd others I have not thought of yet is what I am seeking.
Though I wouldn't mind just an answer to the Question above.
Thanks ever so much for ny and all help,
    Andy D

    @ Infinite Vortex
Thanks for the suggestion, it confirmed what I was planning to do.  Only I was going to go a step or two further and clone a drive on the compurter I plan to use as a server **and** clone a drive one other computer that is not critical for my day-to-day and make sure I have a good backup of one of my iDevice on my main iMac then sync that iDevice to the client computer I was going to use for testing. Then use the cloned drives for testing so all I have to do to get back is to reboot from the internal drives. Oh, and I also have clones of all my computers, and the clones are always stored safely away from the day-to-day or any test environment.
I have been thinking about a home server for quite some time, but the deboggle with the loss of local control of my contacts and calendar with Mavericks just pushed me over the edge into taking this from the back burner to a higher priority.  I just want to retain control of my contacts and calendars and not have them on iCloud or anybody elses cloud.
    Thanks,
    Andy

  • HELP! What's the best book/resource for learning more complex interactions in EdgeAnimate?

    Hi there,
I'm completely new to the world of HTML5/javascript etc and I'm looking for a book/person that will teach me (in a comprehensive, 'from the ground up' kind of way) how to apply these sorts of interactions.
1: Drag a symbol and 'throw' it so that the object continues moving at the velocity of finger swipe after the user removes their hand from the screen, slowly decreasing with a pre defined 'inertia' variable.
2: Drag a symbol away from its initial location so that it 'springs' back to it's initial starting point.
3: 'Hit test' principles so that if the user had 'thrown' a symbol I could detect if it had collided with a 'floor' or 'wall' and it would then bounce or would affect the inertia.
4: Smooth drag and drop so that the symbol you are 'carrying' is subjected to a easing formula that makes the motion smoother and less erratic than whan just dragging the actual object directly.
5: Drag and drop in a constrained arc with the symbol rotating back to it's original point as if it were a pendulum. So, the higher you initially drag the item, the faster it would swing back, initially overshooting it's original point, until an inertia variable would eventually mean it would settle at it's origin.
I've seen a few books about EDGE in general, but they seem to be more about how to use the drawing tools and perform basic interactions (on click stop at frame whatever etc).
I guess I need a book on java script, but I'm very keen for something that can communicate how to do these things directly within edge (so wether you enter the code on frame update or touch start etc)
If anybody out there knows of a useful resource to achieve these kind of results I woudl be REALLY greatful. I know there are some posts on the forums that detail some of these things, but I need something that explains in a simple way how and why you do something so that I can properly grasp it.
    Cheers,
    Tom

    Hi there,
Well, I've found a great blog post by a guy called Burak Kanber on how to use Hooke's law in javescript.
    http://burakkanber.com/blog/physics-in-javascript-car-suspension-part-1-spring-mass-damper /
The principles all make sense to me and I can kind of see what's going on with the javescript (whan I say, 'kind of', I mean pretty vaguely) but I can't fathom out how to apply that javescript in Edge. Can anyone describe how to apply this code to Edge directly - ie. Where should I put each section of code to ensure that the drag actions work etc.?
I don't need the canvas stuff as I'll be using graphic objects anyway.
Any help would be massively apreciated!
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Hi,
Im wondering if anyone knows any good resources to read about general video technical information... Like from the ground up about bitrates, formats, audio formats, codecs, frame rates, buffer sizes and all that stuff...
I can now work with premiere pro, but i realised there was a whole new world of things to learn once i wanted to export my finished project...
    please help me :)
