A little advice goes a long way
I'd first like to say this: I appreciate anyone's honest opinion. I know that this comes down to my own personal decision, but why I'm asking is that I'd like to hear if anyone has made this choice and has any regrets, knows where I'm coming from, or feels glad that they did. Thanks in advance!
My first year of owning a white Macbook is almost up and my hard drive is very full! I could buy a new HD and Applecare (meh), or sell this one on CL and buy a new one for about the same price, or upgrade to a MBP. I'm seriously debating moving to Macbook Pro after seeing yesterday's update, but I'm not sure if it's the right choice. Here's what is important to me: I absolutely hate having a white computer. It shows oils in bright lighting (like my living room) and I have to wash my hands before using it...every time. White is just not very practical. Obviously I could get the black Macbook, but 1. It shows fingerprints like crazy (I've seen the Blackbooks at the Apple Store and they look disgusting ) and 2. A lot of people complain of chipping and it scratching easily. Speaking of scratches, my white Macbook has been babied for the last year and it still has a lot of swirly scratches all over the case. I do really like the size of my Macbook, but to be honest, I don't really take it all over the place now that I've finished college. I also admit that I can't take staring at a 13" screen all day anymore. I play with photoshop and do a bit of multitasking, so it's either buy a Macbook and a monitor or get a 15" MBP.
I'm interested in a Macbook Pro not because I need to do extensive "Pro" work, but because it's aluminum and everyone that I know who has one doesn't have to deal with buying a soft case or worrying about scratching it. They can be semi-rough with it and it will take the abuse. I'm not hot on the fact that it's bigger, even though it's still pretty light, but I probably wouldn't need an external monitor. I really like the backlit keyboard and that it seems a bit more future proof than the Macbook, even though bigger and better is always around the corner. I've read a lot about how Leopard is possibly going to be using the GPU more than Tiger has, and feel more comfortable knowing it's there in the future. I also like the new LED display (most of the displays that I've seen previously have uneven lighting, which I hope this fixes, as well as the sparklies) and that the battery life now seems to be about equal to my Core Duo, despite the added size and GPU. I don't like the keyboard as much as the Macbook's, and I wonder how annoying the latch will be in the long term, but I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually. I also wonder how the heat situation is on the new Pro's since I heard it's gotten better, but my CoreDuo gets decently warm and it doesn't really bug me too much.
So there you have it. I'm leaning towards a MBP, and what's important to me is having a laptop that's versatile, doesn't get dirty easily and is functional for the long term. I've traded up for the last few years, but I'm so tired of it. I just want to get something that I can hold onto for a while and be happy with. I need it to be tough and portable, since I'm probably going to be moving out of the country soon for a couple months. It ***** that they don't make a 13" in aluminum, cause my problem would be solved immediately. I'm well aware that the Macbook is a much better deal and is more portable, but this seems to be the only option I have. As you can tell, I've already pretty much made up my mind, but I'd like to hear anything I might not have thought about or if any of my opinions clash with personal experience. Thanks!

Thanks for the helpful reply, Kenneth! I'll definitely look into the Speck case, whichever way I go.
"Some display issues have to do with the display and not the backlight, so don't expect 100% happiness. Ever."
Agreed. I've seen some really bad MBP's and I was hoping that they've gotten better. I've actually read a lot of threads here about how the Macbook's screen is generally better quality (at least before the update).
"There is never enough monitor. If that is a serious concern, you should get a large external monitor. 15 is just not that much bigger than 13. 23 is big!"
I totally agree. However, regarding my current situation of leaving the country and not having access to an external monitor, I think I might be better off having 15" to play with abroad.
"Beauty is not everything. If you need a separate graphics card, an expresscard slot, 4GB RAM, or FW800, get the MBP. Also, it will be faster GHz for GHz because of the cache, among other things."
Sometimes I wonder if I have OCD with keeping nice things clean...which is why I think that white might not be the best choice for me. I noticed that you have a Macbook Pro yourself. Do you feel like it's hard to keep clean, or that you have to treat it gently?
About the extra options that you mention, I'll be honest: I don't have a specific need for them. I'd like to get a FW enclosure for my external drive, but I don't currently own one. I'd also like to have a graphics card, though I don't really play computer games. I wouldn't like to rule it out for the future though...I'm going to have a lot of free time in Costa Rica. Also, the 4GB of RAM will likely be more important moving forward. I'm planning on keeping my next computer for the next 2-3 years, so I just want to make sure that I have few things to regret.
" In 2 or 3 years you can buy the MBP Extreem with a 10GHz processor, 2 TB HD, and direct output to your optic nerves for the same price, and already have the big monitor!"
Hilarious. Thanks for that.

A little help goes a long way.
Hello just been given a new iPod, have installed the cd, tried connecting and get the following message when I plug the iPod into the usb port:
A problem occured during hardware installation. Your new hardware might not work properly.
I am stuck as to what I can do, I have tried unistalling, reinstalling, resetting bothe the computer and the iPod, and still no joy. I am beginning to worry now. Any help would be good. Thank you.
HugoHello,
Try resetting your iPod, then putting it into disk mode. Your computer might recognize your iPod now.
Post back if it worked or not.

When we rent a show like The Good Wife while watching the show it freezes and the little circle goes around and around. The only way to get the program going again is to use the remote and go forward or backward. This happens throughout the whole show and it is impossible to watch. Can anyone help? We cannot watch movies or shows this way.
What is your actual speed (speedtest.net)?
Check istumbler.net or netstumbler to verify any interference
Make sure you are on your ISPs DNS (settings - network - configure DNS - automatic) -
my 3gs is stuck in restore mode and when i hook it to my computer to update it goes all the way thru till its to the part where its waiting for iphone and that's it it stays there no matter how long i leave it hooked up.. does anyone know how to fix it??
That does happen. It depends on how hard the server is being hit, as well as the connection speed of your system. If you are on a windows system, you will want to disable any antivirus or firewall software during the download.

My ipod 60gb classic is showing as fully charged until I connect it to my pc when it comes up with the error message, 'please wait very low battery' and the little wheel goes round and nothing happens, can anyone explain why this is and what i can do?
I have worked my way through the assistant and nothing works. I have tried connecting in disc mode but although the screen on the ipod is showing that the device is charged and that it is in disc mode as soon as I connect it to the computer it comes up with the error message 'please wait very low battery' and stays like that until I disconnect when it appears to be OK again. I have tried on both pc and mac.
BTW the ipod is an ipod video not classic if that makes any difference.

My iphoto will not open correctly. All I get is the little wheel going around and around. What do I need to do to fix this? I would like to be able to see my photos again.
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
- History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
- Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have. -
None of the apps I downloaded are opening. The screen just flashes a little, and goes back to the home screen,
Try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. The screen will go blank and then power ON again in the normal way.] It is 'appsolutely' safe!

I can't add a contact or edit contacts the little + sign is no longer on my phone...same thing on my iCalendar. I can no longer add events or dates. how do I fix this?
Reset your phone, hold the home and off button down until the apple symbol comes up. If that doesnt fix it then you need to restore your phone in itunes, Connect to itunes, right click on your phones name to the left, then click restore from backup. That providing you have backed up your phone recently.

Help! I have an iMac 24" OSX version 10.6.8. My iphoto is having problems. It will not open properly. All I get is the little wheel going around and around. My iphoto is: iphoto'11 version 9.2.3(629.52). What do I need to do to remedy this? I recently installed InstallMac. I don't want this on my computer. I don't know how to get it off. I'm afraid that is what scrogged my iphoto. Can anyone tell me how to correct this situation?
Re: iPhoto:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

It seems like Ethernet backup and Airport backup goes in different ways
Since one month a go, I've been having problems with Time Machine backup over Time Capsule.
When I run Time Machine through Ethernet, there is no problem. Fast and clean. In the Console there is not any error message.
I unplug ethernet cable, start airport, and in the next copy appears: "Bulk settings atributes failled", several times. Few backups after it will appear problems with a "file path" and few after will appear "deep traversal".
I plug the Ethernet cable, disconnect airport and I forced to re-index the image bundle. Few backups correct with Ethernet. Unplug ethernet, connect airport, and again the same history.
It seems like Ethernet backup and Airport backup goes in different ways.
Permissions are corrected and there is no problems in any disc with First Aid.
¿Any idea?. Thanks in advance.I am having the same issue. I have three layered elements as three columns in the body of the page. When I add the farthest right element it pushes the other left elements to the bottom of the page. There are aren't any other elements on the page.
Is this a CSS issue? I thought about exporting to Dreamweaver and fixing it there but would like to take the easy route first. -
My ipod screen has a little scratch going across it...is this covered in the Apple Care Protection Plan?
No.

Itunes won't connect, status bar goes about half way and stops, then times out. I have tried all fixes posted, you name it, I have done it. Running Vista and current version of Itunes. Can connect to Internet with any other app. Using Firefox, their latest version if that matters.
I have seen this is an on going problem throughout the Itunes community. All I can say is 'Bad Form Apple, Bad form.'One more odd thing. The itunes diagnostics believes my windows firewall is on which is it not (believe me I've checked/double checked etc) AND believes itunes is not enable in windows firewall which it is, if ever I turned WF on. How can itunes get this wrong? I mean, if itunes believes its being blocked, maybe that's why I'm being blocked...has anyone heard of this?

My Touch (my new one after the upgrade to 2.0 killed my first one) is not upgraded. Can I just upgrade to 2.1 without going all the way to 2.2 Do you think that would be safer anyway? And if so, how do you do that?
well, seemed like it did.. and Apple replaced it free and refunded me for the upgrade so it seems like they think it did too...but that's not my question....
