A little confused about HDV to DVCPro HD etc

Hi, a couple of people have told me to convert my HDV footage to DVCpro for editing / compositing / fades etc because of the quicker workflow in FCP.
Ideally I'd like to output 720p
Does this sound like a good solution... If so should I:
a) Convert all footage using compressor before starting
b) Just create a DVCPro HD timeline in FCP and render the files there
c) Make a DVCPro HD sequence and use something like nattress plugins to create de-interlaced 720p footage..
d) None of the above..
Also, I know I don't 'need' a RAID 0 for HDV, but would I get any substantial improvement if working in DVCPro HD or Motion projects etc.
I'm working on a Quad Mac Pro with 3gb Ram.
Thanks in advance.

First, Craig:
Hi Shane, I am using a Sony HDR-HC1. I'm not sure if the outputs from the camera will plug into the card.
What outputs do you have from the camera? Ah...looking it up I see that it has an S-Video jack. Ick...I wouldn't go that route. Best to rent an HDV deck and use component out. Or upconvert after with compressor.
Fenster:
if I wanted to make my life easier when I color correct and key out my green screen I should convert my footage to DVCPRO HD
Shooting a key with HDV to begin with is not the wisest decision. The HUGE amount of compression. I will also say that pulling a key with DVCPRO HD isn't the best either, but is more doable. I don't think converting HDV to DVCPRO HD would make pulling a key any easier. Compression is already there.

  • If I download a video from my video camera to a new (current 1/12) iMac 21 inch, how can I burn it to a DVD using the computer itself. Is this possible? Do I need to buy additional software. Two salespeople at the Apple were a little confused about this.

    If I download a video from my video camera to a new (current 1/12) iMac 21 inch, how can I burn it to a DVD using the computer itself. Is this possible? Do I need to buy additional software. Two salespeople at the Apple were a little confused about this. Thank you.

    The DVD recorder I'm referring to is one I've use for years. It is not attached to my aging iMac in any way. I simply play the video from my camcorder (mini-dv tape based Canon HV20)  into the DVD recorder and create a DVD that can be played in any DVD player. I can only do minimum editing so what goes in is what I get. This has been fine for creating dupes of the various things I shoot.
    If I buy a new iMac (21 inch), I'd like to be able to download the video to the iMac through iMovie, work with it to whatever degree I wish, and burn it to a DVD that can also be played in any DVD player -- or to use as a master to dupe copies.
    What I'm understanding from you and others is that this would be possible if Apple had included iDVD in the software that comes with the iMac, or if I purchase the iLife Family Pack, or buy the correct version of Toast. I'm hoping I can persuade Apple to sell me an iMac with iDVD installed.
    Essentially I want to move from a basic process of creating DVD copies to the more sophisticated process of creating one from an iMac.
    Thank you again for your help and wisdom.

  • A little Confused About Apps...

    Hi Everyone,
    I've been looking at the iPod Touch and it seems like the best-designed player on the market. I'm a journalist and I want to use the Touch to play my interviews, which are voice recordings in WMA format (converted to MP3).
    OK, I'd love to do some basic things, and I'm confused about what the June update will offer.
    Please tell me if the June apps will allow these capabilities:
    1. Play voice recordings with the speaker instead of headphones
    2. Allow me to create a folder on the home page to go directly to my voice recordings
    3. Drag-and-drop files in Windows explorer directly into a folder on the home page
    Yes, I know, I'm trying to use the Touch for an unusual thing, but I think there are a lot of other journalists and bloggers out there who would also use the Touch if it could provide these capabilities!
    I'm not interested in fancy games for the Touch. I'm much more interested in expanding basic capabilities.
    If I know the Touch will be able to do these things, I'd buy one today!
    Thanks,
    Matt

    neuroanatomist,
    Thanks for the response. This is all very interesting...
    I understand it's not a real speaker, but I have heard some demos where it was used to play rudimentary sounds. That's why I wonder if it would be good enough for simple voice playback.
    I know some people like this, but I don't like is having to always drill down several "layers" to get to my actual recordings. Instead of having to do Music > Album > Playlist, I'd really like to just have folders on the home page. To my mind, this does not sound like a difficult thing to be able to do, though maybe I'm missing something here.
    On the drag-and-drop thing: of course, I understand Apple's need to force us to use iTunes. I like iTunes, and use it for music all the time, even though I don't have an iPod at the moment. But it just seems to me that Apple would not suffer if you could drag and drop your valid music files (or voice recordings) directly into folders on the iPod. You'd still have to own legal music files, bought from iTunes.
    Anyway, if these hurdles could be overcome, I'd buy an iPod Touch today. At the moment, it's a tough choice. Several other players do some of the things I am asking for, though none of them has the elegance of the iPod.
    I just wish Apple would put their elegance together with the capabilities of other players.

  • A little confusion about router

    I understand that I can use my Airport Extreme Base Station as my secondary router.  Am I correct that I leave all my Cat5 cables plugged into the Airport Extreme and run a Cat 5 from the FIOS router to the WAN of the Airport, and turn off the radio of the FIOS router?  By doing this do I loose and functions? Keep in mind I have TV, Internet and Phone.

    There is a great deal of information  on DSL Reports about the configuration of the Airport Extreme as a secondary router in FiOS installations.  In fact there are many step-by-step recipes for a  wide variety of installation options, and tables that show which FiOS functions (e.g.., Caller ID, Media Manager) operate successfully under  the various configurations.  I am far from expert in such things but the DSL information made installing and configuring my secondary router quite easy.

  • HT1689 I have a new laptop, and I am a little confused about my itunes on it.

    I can see that my music is there, I guess in the cloud because most of the songs have the little cloud and arrow next to them, so they need to be downloaded to this laptop?
    My playlists didn't seem to transfer from the old laptop. Is that because the playlists weren't technically in the cloud? Is there a way I should have done that?
    Sorry, this is pretty simple stuff, I am just staring to use iTunes :/
    Thanks

    Your library will only be where you copy it to, so yes, your iTunes purchases (those that are still in your country's store) will only show as being in the cloud on your new laptop - if you want to download them on that computer from the store then what you can redownload will show under the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage (and check to see if anything is hidden : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4919)
    Or if you still have your old computer then you can copy your library (including playlists) from that : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
    e.g. the 'home sharing' method includes :
    Transferring playlists
    If you want not only your content but also your playlists to exist on your new computer, you will want to transfer a copy of all your playlists from your old computer. To do this, choose File > Library > Export Library on your old computer. Save the XML file that is created to your desktop.
    Send the playlists file to yourself as an e-mail attachment, use an external drive, or use file sharing to move the playlists file to your new computer. Once the file is on your new computer, open iTunes and choose File > Library> Import Playlist. The import process will remove any items from the playlists that you didn't share via Home Sharing.

  • I'm a little confused about this apple remote thing

    Background: I've currently got a mac mini, which i love, which came with this cool little remote deal which makes using iTunes super easy. Now I'm on the verge of getting a nice new Mac Book Pro and I'm wondering what to do in regards to this remote. What I want to know and have been unable to figure out is, does one remote automatically work for any mac in the vicinity? do you have to program a specific remote to work with a specific computer? I don't want to start playing a song on my MBP and have my mini start playing something else.
    Anyone have any experience with this?

    You can pair the remote with any computer running a version of OSX that supports the remote. Just follow the instructions at:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1619
    I have three remotes, and have two of them paired. One paired to an iMac running 10.4.11, one paired to a MBP running 10.5.2, and the unpaired remote runs my apple dock to control my iPod hooked to the stereo.

  • I'm a little confused about the Adobe Site of the Day submission.

    Can you only submit if built with Muse?  Where can you submit an already built side with code?

    The sites in the www.adobekb.com Site Of The Day gallery are Muse sites. Many contain HTML embed code for maps, Twitter feeds, forms, videos, analytics, etc., which can be simply copied/pasted into Muse Design view. Some contain animations created and placed/imported from Edge Animate or Flash Pro.
    We do our best to screen the site of the day winners to exclude sites that were achieved by editing the HTML generated by Muse after export, since that workflow requires hand coding which is not what Muse is about. Sites that include copied/pasted embed code or small snippets of code inserted in the <head> section of Page Properties within Muse are fine.
    A couple caveats
    1) We recently removed one site that relied on hand editing after export from Muse, which either did not contain that code when the award was granted, or we missed it.
    2) Authors of sites are likely to continue to evolve their designs after the award is granted, so the site linked to may no longer be the exact site/code that was awarded Site Of The Day honors.
    If you encounter a site in the gallery and are puzzled by how it was created with Muse, ask about it here. I'm sure the community would be happy to respond and the discussion would be educational for all.

  • Bought Pioneer 112BK DL drive and now a little confused about media

    Silly question but are both DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL formats supported by OS-X (native support for the drive) and a conventional DVD player? I can see the drive supports both but I wanted to check this question before I buy a bunch of disks.

    OSX built-in software only supports DVD+R DL I use Verbatim DVD+R DL at 8X in a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-110 drive.

  • A little confused about where my domain is

    Recently I upgraded to a new MacBook Pro from a MacBook. I saved my site files and when I go into iWeb I am able to update my web page. However my updates do not appear on my webpage www.monkei.com and instead the changes are posted to http://web.me.com/keithoster/Site/Welcome.html. This is a webpage that has been in existence for 5+ years and still works, I guess I just don't have my updates pointing to the right location? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • I'm a little confused about TV tuners...

    The laptop I am looking at has the option to add a Integrated Hybrid TV tuner. I understand it allows me to watch cable, etc on my laptop... But I do not subscribe to cable or satellite tv. I have the free channels only, with an antenna above my tv. I recently bought a converter box for the tv for the DTV transition. Will I be able to receive free DTV signals with my laptop? Do I need some form of antenna? Are there antennas to improve quality?
    Ultimately, I don't like paying monthly payments and don't need cable. I would like to use my laptop extensively in my car and would add an antenna to my car if I could within reason/aesthetics to watch the DTV channels for free while traveling through different states without having an Internet connection.
    Possible? Or should I not get the TV tuner for my laptop?

    ....only problem with intergrated tv tuners is that its intergrated thats why you cant upgrade the antenna even if you wanted to
    because its bulit in...and i also heard of the mother board failing because of the tuner card so .... get an usb tuner because you
    can get the annena upgraded and use it on any system you have acess to...
    and hybrid means  you  get anlague and digitial  tv ... try  a better antenna
    get an external usb tunner

  • I'm a little confused about gpt and partitioning

    Note: following the youtube guide provided in the link
    I'm trying to make a VM in VMware and when I run cfdisk I get option like sun, dos, gpt, and a 4th item. Now I've been able to successfully install Arch with dos before by disabling efi. But I am trying to get this up and running because I believe I have efi on my desktop motherboard and plan to install arch as dual boot setup with windows 7. So when I do cfdisk and follow it further, I don't know a) what type to make a drive, I know one has to be swap and I assume the other has to be "Linux Filesystem", and b) how to set a bootflag on a particular partition.
    P.S. Was also reading on the arch wiki (link also provided) and I don't think I'm reading this correctly it's saying that if Windows is instaled on EFI then I cannot install Arch as GPT either? What if it's on seperate hard drives?

    There's an "ef00" type (if you're going to use EFI) and an "ef02" type (if you're going to use MBR). These you should use instead of boot flags. If opting for EFI the esp needs to be FAT32 (the ef00 type) and is recommended to be mounted at /boot mountpoint. If opting for GPT+MBR grub will need a BIOS boot partition (ef02 type) which is ~2MiB. I assumed you want GPT (required for EFI).
    Now regarding dual booting. Windows doesn't support GPT+MBR. So either go with GPT+EFI or MBR+BIOS.
    Thank you, just to be sure the (I'm pretty sure I'm right, I'll make the /dev/sda2 (non-Swap partition) the EFI type since I want to recreate scenario of dual booting assuming I have EFI. I'll try it set to MBR later. Now to a question, On my last VM I believe I had it set to Linux Filesystem, it still works as far as booting goes. But I wonder why? I hadn't set bootflags, neither had I set it to EFI/MBR.

  • I'm a little confused about the vents...

    At work I use my early 2011 MBP connected to an external monitor. The computer itself sits on a ThermaPAK to help cool it down, because I do graphic work it runs hot. I want to know if I close my MBP if it cuts off the ventaliation to the board and all because from what I understand the vents themselves are in the black strip? If it keeps the computer cooler, I have no problem using the external display soley and using an external keyboard and mouse (which I do anyway).
    Tips and tricks?
    Other ways to cool it down?

  • Confused about conflicting disk guidelines

    This is my first time on the forum and I am learning a tremendous amount - thanks everyone.  I am planning a machine with 3 disks and I'm a little confused about apparently conflicting guidellines issued by Harm.  In the "Storage rules for an editing rig", he states in Rule 4 that "If you have OS & programs on disk C:, set your pagefile on another disk".  However, in the "Guidelines  for disk disk storage", he says that, for 3 disks, that the OS, programs and pagefile should be on drive C:    Which is right?  Thanks

    You may be somewhat confused, as it appears to be contradictory, but let me try to explain.
    The basic rule for a fast disk system is to spread the load across as many disks as you have.
    Every disk can access only one location at a time, and if a program requires access to a number of files, it would be great to have all those files on different disks, because then all these files can be accessed in parallel, making it much faster than in a serial way. There are however practical limitations to doing it that way. It does not make sense to organize the location of your clips in such a way that all these clips are on different disks, your potential gains would be far outweighed by the effort to move your clips to different disks. It does not even make sense to allocate a different disk for different tracks, although from a disk performance view it may make a lot of sense.
    It has to make sense from a workflow view as well, so you have to compromise and try to follow a 'KISS' approach. As you can see from the Generic Guideline, the allocation of the pagefile can change, depending on the number of disks in the system. The reasoning behind it is to spread the load as much as possible but keep it as simple as possible from an organizational point of view.
    Remember, it is only a guideline, not a strict rule. Consider for instance a situation where a lot of stock footage is used in nearly all projects. It makes sense to put all this stock footage on a different disk than your normal clips, if you also add a lot of music to your projects, it makes sense to use a separate disk for your music files, because you spread access load across different disks and still keep it relatively simple to organize. Now, if this does not happen often and only for very limited parts of the timeline, this may not be worth the effort or the dedicated disks. So, the guideline is exactly that and can be influenced by your specific workflow and material. Someone may want to have all his HDV captures on one disk and all his AVCHD imports on another disk and maybe from a third camera on a third disk, thereby improving multicam performance.
    Hope this clears it up a bit.

  • Confuse about the injecting entity in EJB 3.0?

    Hi all,
    I have an customersBean which is inherit from customersRemote and my problem is i' am little confuse about injecting the entity(customer).
    Where can you apply the EntityManagerFactory is it outside on EJB or Inside the EJB? means outside EJB is use the web application or java application. i have and example.
    this is inside on EJB...............
    public class CustomersBean implements com.savingsaccount.session.CustomersRemote {
    @PersistenceContext(unitName="SavingAccounts")
    EntityManagerFactory emf;
    EntityManager em;
    /** Creates a new instance of CustomersBean */
    public CustomersBean() {
    public void create(int id, String name, String address, String telno, String mobileno)
    try{
    //This is the entity.
    Customer _customer = new Customer();
    _customer.setId(id);
    _customer.setName(name.toString());
    _customer.setAddress(address.toString());
    _customer.setTelno(telno.toString());
    _customer.setMobileno(mobileno.toString());
    em = emf.createEntityManager();
    em.persist(_customer);
    emf.close();
    }catch(Exception ex){
    throw new EJBException(ex.toString());
    in web application, i'm using the @EJB in customer servlets.
    public class CustomerProcessServlet extends HttpServlet {
    @EJB
    private CustomersRemote customerBean;
    blah blah inject directly coming request field from jsp.
    }

    Hi all,
    I have an customersBean which is inherit from customersRemote and my problem is i' am little confuse about injecting the entity(customer).
    Where can you apply the EntityManagerFactory is it outside on EJB or Inside the EJB? means outside EJB is use the web application or java application. i have and example.
    this is inside on EJB...............
    public class CustomersBean implements com.savingsaccount.session.CustomersRemote {
    @PersistenceContext(unitName="SavingAccounts")
    EntityManagerFactory emf;
    EntityManager em;
    /** Creates a new instance of CustomersBean */
    public CustomersBean() {
    public void create(int id, String name, String address, String telno, String mobileno)
    try{
    //This is the entity.
    Customer _customer = new Customer();
    _customer.setId(id);
    _customer.setName(name.toString());
    _customer.setAddress(address.toString());
    _customer.setTelno(telno.toString());
    _customer.setMobileno(mobileno.toString());
    em = emf.createEntityManager();
    em.persist(_customer);
    emf.close();
    }catch(Exception ex){
    throw new EJBException(ex.toString());

  • Confused About Catch Up

    Hi everyone, So I have  just had Sky installed and I am a little confused about some aspects of it and I hope someone can give me some advice. The catch up service: Is it normal for there to be very little actual content in the catch up section?When I was looking at the various options on offer, one of the things that I really liked the look of was the '30 day catch up service'.
    I (possibly incorrectly) assumed this would mean I could access the vast majority (if not all) of the programmes shown on Sky for the last 30 days. When I look in the catch up section, there is very little choice there.For example - in the sky channels section, sorted by day - for last Saturday there are only four shows. Is this a fault or is catch up a whole lot less than it promises to be? I have the family package by the way and I realise that I can only access channels and catch up that I am subscribed to but it seems very poor to me that the 'catch up' service amounts to just a handful of shows, most of which I am not interested in. Strangely, when I manually search in the search box for a specific show, I get on-demand results that I cannot find anywhere else in the EPG. Is there more on demand content there but only if you know exactly what you want to search for and use the search box? It seems odd to me that I have to know what I want to watch and search for it manually, I cannot just browse a list of available shows. Pushed on demand: So the way I understand it is this, my 500GB hard drive has 250GB partitioned off for the sky box to download content to overnight. Where do I access this content?I can't find any of it.I have read the manual and it says I will see a little play icon on content that is available to watch which, I assume, refers to content automatically downloaded by the box. I have seen this icon on one show. That's it. Is 250GB of space being used for nothing?Can I get that space to use for my own downloads and recordings?I know there is a setting to turn off 'pushed on demand' but does this free up the space reserved? Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere or if I am asking stupid questions and thanks in advance for any replies. Broddr.

    Thanks for the reply Annie.
    I did as you suggested and still get no more.
    Pressing the green button and selecting channels just splits the five shows up into their specific channel.
    I have five shows total.
    I select Nat Geo channel and it shows the three of those five shows that are on Nat Geo.
    I select Nat Geo Wild and it shows the remaining two of those five shows that are on the Wild channel.
    I have been through all the system settings and every page on the box OS again and again and I am coming to the conclusion that I do not have a problem as such, rather the service is simply pants!
    Apparently my 'catch up' service for Nat Geo for the last four days consists of one programme!
    I suppose for an 'extra' service I can't really complain, but the touted '30 day catch up service' was one of the main reasons I signed up.
    I would argue they should not really call it 'catch up'.
    'Selected highlights' is probably more accurate.
    "Catch up on the best of sky over the last thirty days - as long as, for example, what you want to catch up on SyFy is Dark Matter and Defiance 'cos that's all there is."
