A little off topic: Headphones

My headphones that came with my ipod broke (my dog chewed at the wires). Does anyone know where I can buy these headphones? I've looked at the apple store and I can't find them!
who knows   Windows XP

The Apple Store only sell them as a package with the remote. However personally I don't think they are very good and I'd suggest that you upgrade a bit now you have a chance. The iPod is capable of much better sound with improved 'phones.

  • Perhaps a little off-topic, but...

I use Google's Gmail for my email. I noticed something that kind of freaked me out, though. As I was reading a note from a friend, I noticed that Google's ads to the side of the message were a little too closely related to the contents of the email. For instance, my friend mentioned Social Security and, yep, there were ads to the right about Social Security.
I thought I was just being paranoid but it happened again and again. I guess it's just a computer keyword search, but isn't it illegal for Google to be searching the contents of emails?
Like I said, it really disturbed me, and I really think it's "for real". It's probably just a marketing thing, but it sure seems like a violation.
Does anyone know anything about this, and if so, can I contact any agency to help protect the privacy of Gmail users? I contacted Google and only received a generic automated response saying they appreciated my interest but didn't have the ability to answer all questions.
    Thanks,
    Allan

    Hi allono,
    Welcome back!
Using web-e-mail is obviously a no brainer. IE., they use software that helps them advertise on key words to get you linked. Thus profits.
No e-mail is really private. The only safest way to share documents for Mac users in the drop box between multiple user accounts.
Other than that maybe Binhex format, large bit encrypted files, via file sharing or local network sharing, better yet the postal mail of media (encrypted too).

  • A little off topic - remote issues

Anyone else having this issue. I have an universal aeros mx850 and for some reason it controls the apple tv great through direct IR - but when i go to RF to the IR repeater it doesn't work. Any thoughts on this? Really strange. Never had an issue like this before where the remote worked the device perfectly through direct IR but when you move to RF no go.
    Thanks

it could be the IR driver... I assume that you learned it into the remote itself. most all IR devices follow the NEC standard set years ago, that allow an IR header and then a repeat command. Apple must deviate from this slightly, because they also encode a remote ID somewhere in the header, to allow devices to be "paired" but also all share a common generic header that is not remote specific. you could try to go to www.remotecentral.com and search the files section for you appropriate remote driver for an Apple remote. this particular driver might have been learned differently than yours and may work where yours did not. also you could try to go back and relearn the commands. there are all types of tricks to groom or filter the IR for different effects.... you can tap the button instead of holding it down... place a sheet of notebook paper in between the remote and the learning remote, shoot it at an angle... etc... if remotecentral does not have an alternate driver there, i'm sure it must be in the section for Pronto remotes, and there are utilities to convert the file over to MX style files. perhaps the odd structure of the header + ID is confusing the RF bridges (which are known to have so so performance in certain situations.
the other possibility is that the carrier frequency is non-standard. off the top of my head, i think that his frequency is in the 38 or 39kHz... but some manufacturers are known to deviate slightly off this. the original remote works fine, but if it is not within the spec of the RF repeater or Xantech style repeater, then the signal does not pass correctly.
for the Xantech solution, i'll try to research what carrier freq the Apple remoe uses. Xantech does have specific solutions for certain carrier frequencies... such as old Pioneer Elite and, B&O, and Bose equipment... maybe something custom is required for Apple.

  • Good photo editing software? (a little off topic...)

anyone know of a good program for editing photos and other images in general? i used corel photo-paint on my windows pc, and i really liked the balance between easy-to-use and gets-things-done. i've also used photoshop, but i'm not as big a fan of that. any suggestions as to what i should get for my ibook? if it's free or cheap, that would definitely help.... thanks!

First here are two Apple KB documents that you should be aware of, particularly the second one:
    iPhoto Library Description
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder
iPhoto is designed so that the user accesses the photos entirely from within iPhoto and not from the Finder.
You can seamlessly use PSE from within iPhoto as your editor of choice. Go into iPhoto's preferences under the General tab. Under "Double-click photo" select "Open photo in:" and then select PSE. Now when you double-click on a photo PSE will open and open that photo for editing. There is one caveat to all of this, you cannot change the name or extension of the file you're editing. If you edit it as a jpg and save as a jpg file you're safe. If you create a layered image required a change in format and extension to .psd you must save it to the desktop and then import back into iPhoto from there. Other than that it's completely seamless. I use Photoshop 7 as my editor of choice and it works great.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

  • A little off topic, but...

I figured that this is the best place to ask it -
To any of you guys know a good forum specifically for J#? I've found that I'm really using that more than Java, so I'm looking for another forum to better suit myself.
    Thanks for your help.

I've found that I'm really using that more than JavaGood point. As Java is a trademark of Sun nobody else can actually provide Java but Sun. Still J# includes a Java language compiler and as Sun has refused to standardize the Java language it must be considered Java too. And this J# is part of the excellent .NET development environment. So for people who don't need the portability of Sun Java (and the downloads, and the almost very good IDE's), Microsoft J# is a very attractive alternative actually. And it's better that people use Java (in any of its life forms -:) than if they would use C#.

  • Little off-topic: Should I wait with buying new MacBook?

As U C I'm typing this on a PC. I would like to buy a MacBook, but I'm not sure if it's the right time.
A Leopard is expected to arrive in October and maybe an iLife '08 will be included with MacBooks. On other hand I can get a MacBook 10% cheaper now. Don't know what to choose...
I've heard rumors of a new MacBooks coming late '07. How sure is that? Is it worth to wait even longer?

Nobody here can answer that question for you, as your computing needs and budget are different than everyone else's. If you need a computer now then buy, otherwise if you keep waiting for the next best thing, you'll always be waiting.
*"I've heard rumors of a new MacBooks coming late '07. How sure is that? "*
Sorry, but nobody here can answer that question either as Apple does not discuss unannounced products, and discussion of such rumors is a violation of the terms of use of these forums.

  • Camera Settings and Printing -off topic

    Hi Everyone;
My teenage cousin is going on a trip to Europe for a few weeks and she will be taking alot of digital pictures with her Canon point & shoot camera ( 5 MP SD30), but will not be able to unload her images from the SD card. She already has Three Cards totaling 1.5 GBs and does not want to buy more.
So in order to increase the number images the card will hold, do you recommend lowering the resolution OR lowering the image quality by increasing the JPEG compression in the camera settings, for the purposes of printing ? ( obviously not all her images, but she may want to have some for her school yearbook, friends etc ).
This is a question I have asked myself with my own digital cameras, over the years, if i have to shoot JPEG i usually have the settings to MAX resolution and Lowest compression, in case i want to print some.
Also what would you recommend as the lowest resolution setting (in general, with any camera) if you want to print the following sizes?
    4 X 6
    5 X 7
    8 X 10 or US Letter
Thanks in advance, and i realize this is a little off topic.

  • Off topic: Database Unique IDs

    Hi folks,
This is a little off-topic, but I figure that there may be other people out
there whose Forte development would benefit from the discussion.
I am currently building a development framework for our new software
product. As part of that framework I'd like to include the facility for
generating unique, user-invisible, integer database IDs.
Now there is some doubt here that this is actually required and that the
primary key should be whatever the programmer wants it to be, including
    multiple columns if necessary.
I was wondering if anyone can give us some rules-of-thumb regarding
the use of unique IDs as primary keys. Or if someone can point me to
some on-line resources (or even a good book) that can guide us in this
    area.
The arguments I have given for using integer IDs are:
    - Single, integer columns should be faster
    - User invisible integer ID allows editing/duplicates of all user-visible fields
    - Single, integer foreign keys would reduce storage requirements
    - Standardising on integer IDs would allow generic functionality built into
    framework
    - More object-oriented as objects have "built-in" unique identity
I would appreciate any comments people have. We can take this
discussion off-list if that is preferable.

  • Somewhat off topic, wedding lighting and wireless lav. question

Hello everyone! This question is slightly off topic, but I'm desperate for an answer. I've been doing wedding videos for some time now and it's time to upgrade my setup. I'm currently in the market for a good, reliable wireless lavaliere mic, and a good quality on camera light. I use a panasonic DVX100b for all of my footage. For the light I'd like to spend about $400.00 ish or less, but I will spend more if the price jump dramatically increases the performance. I also have about $600 to spend on a wireless lav. system, again I will pay more if the jump in price brings a considerable jump in quality. Can anyone make any recommendations?
    Thanks

Gotta go with the Sennheiser Evolution series as well. Although I can't say that the actual mics they ships with are the best, they're not bad and I've had very few issues with the range and reception.
And if you're shooting solo, aside from the mics, make sure you pick up a 2 or 3 foot XLR cable so that you have enough hose to allow you to hook the receiver on to your belt. Beats clipping it to the handle strap.
You can also get a little adapter for the DVX that will allow you to mount the mics on the camera hot shoe on the top of the handle. I'm sure you can get these for just about and wireless you buy.

  • Will people stumble across off topic posts on a blog?

In Summary my question is this: Have I ANY chance of people stumbling across off topic posts?
Let's say I have my website with a specific subject as far as domain and title and content are concerned.
    I.E: John's Tech Blog at techblogger.com
The content is pretty much all about tech stuff.
But then I see a film I like and want to review it...and put a review on there.
    OR
I want to discuss something I find interesting on the Psychology Today website (something less mainstream).
Have I ANY chance of people stumbling across either of these or similar?
I know a bit about SEO, and know...basically the more I mention something (keyword-wise) the better. Aswell as density, proximity etc of course.
Now, because 'movie' and 'review' and the title of the movie are only mentioned in close proximity on that one page...does this mean nobody will find it?
Let's also assume I re-post these posts on 5 other article sites linking back.
So basically again: Have I ANY chance of people stumbling across off topic posts?

Most likely not to many, of course you will get a little google juice from the link.

  • Off topic - job market

    Hello
Sorry for the off topic, after all this is a technical forum...
I have been working with Apex for quite a while now and I find it a great tool. I enjoy working with it and I consider myself quite good at it.
However I have concerns about my employability... Its job market seems to be almost non-existent where I live (UK). Even so, Apex seems to be now a mature product, with a growing user base, the Apex forum is one of the Oracle's most popular forums and the IT job market seems to be good here at the moment. Usually all those factors mean a buoyant job market, but it does not seem to be the case with Apex.
I have other skills, and there are quite a few vacancies asking for them. I will not starve but it seems to me that if I want to change job I will have to stop working with Apex, which would be unfortunate for me (and for the community also ;-)
Why is it so? Has anyone got the same impression? Is the Apex job market better in mainland Europe? Any insights welcome...
    Thanks
    Edith

I think there is not a strong demand because it has replaced small development projects , these are usually in house or done by existing IT outsourcing companies
Even though more large developments are being done , it remains a product geared at Access style development , which also has very little job market

  • How do I turn off the headphones to make a call?

    This is odd.
How do I turn off the headphones off to make a call?
For the last two days, every time I make or receive a call, my iPhone (1.1.3) thinks that my headphones are in, even when they are not. When the call engages, there is no audio on the handset. (If I plug my headphones in, the phone works as normal.)
I have turned the phone off and on. (Again and again, in fact.)
I have reset the system software.
I have sacrificed a tofu chicken and did a little dance.
I cannot find a setting to force this feature to turn off.
Is there anything obvious that I am missing?

Try inserting and removing the earbuds several times.
If this doesn't work, insert the earbuds and start playing a song and then remove the earbuds. If sound is not heard from the external speaker, time to give AppleCare a call (800) 694-7466 or make an appointment at an Apple Store if there is one nearby.
Lint or a foreign substance in the earbud jack can cause this and it doesn't take much.

  • Off Topic

How about an "Off Topic" section in the forums?
Something like a place for apple users and apple maniacs to hang out and talk about non tech related stuff. I think this could build up a community, and make the forum as well as the users a little more personal
What do you think? Bad idea?

I just wonder what comes with Level 5... and what is after Level 5... Level X ? g
So far, there's NO difference between Level 4 and Level 5 for me! I keep waiting for something special...
And while there is a "Lounge" forum available to Level 4 and higher users, topics there are still held to the Terms of Use (for example, no topics about rumors or unannounced products). But, there are some posts that are not strictly technical questions in there.
(I wouldn't hurry too much though, as I heard the place is quite dangerous for your health, if you're not too used to certain strong malt beverages...)
Hmm... I don't know about "strong malt beverages", but I've filled the water cooler in The Lounge with vodka for all my martinis, so use water out of the tap when it's your turn to make coffee...

  • Audio production education (way off topic)

Hi all, sorry for the off-topic Q but I'm thinking about "formalizing" my audio production learning. Has anyone had any experience, good or bad, with Berklee's online courses? It's pro tools heavy, but what one learns in one DAW can be ported to another I imagine.
    Thanks much!

I've taken several online courses with Berklee, and found them to be very good. The only issue you really want to be clear about, is that you have necessary prior knowledge to take the class. The Pre-requisites.
You must already be computer savy. You may need to have a certain background knowledge too. For instance, I was taking an arranging class, and we had to upload homework every 2 days. They recommended using Finale. It might take me 2 hours to do the assignment, but then it took me another 5 to figure out how to use finale, to get the assignment to look right. I ended up using Logic's scoring, which was fine, but the benefit of using Finale would have been, all the other students could have downloaded my assignment, and played in in Finale, and heard it exactly as I did it..
Each subject you take might have a different pre-requisite knowledge.. Some classes really don't much of anything.. Some classes use textbooks, or require CD's, others suggest where you can find free materials to assist with. Most classes you need to do some kind of homework, and upload. Some students had trouble with that and dropped out..
I would say that Berklee online is an excellent experience... It is EXPENSIVE though. The only fault I could point out is the above, prior knowledge that one might need to know to take a course. In my experience, the administration was a little too lax with that, in order to sell you a course.
I'm not sure about taking a pro-tools course, and hoping it will give you a lot of knowledge about using cu-base or Logic.. Yes a lot of concepts will 'port over' to another area.

  • OFF TOPIC: Anyone familiar with sed?

Apologies for the off topic nature of the post...
I'm looking for a little help with a "sed" query.
I'm trying to insert a "header" row above the first line of my file but I can't quite get it.
    I've been trying:
    sed -e '1i\header...\' test.csv
    sed -e '1i\header...\' test.csv > test2.csv
If I read it right, I'm issuing the sed command, I'm specifiying my edit command which is to match line 1 and insert "header..." above that line.
I was trying to edit the file in situ but I then read that sed produces a copy of the file, leaving the original untouched. So I tried to redirect the output to a second file.
The sed command runs okay but I'm only getting a copy of test.csv in my second file.
    Can anyone spot my mistake?
    Cheers,
    Mark

Sed uses regex, and \ is an escape.
The normal separator is /. You can use a different character (common ones are ! and # I think) if you have / literals that you don't want to have to escape, but I don't know if you can use \ as the separator. If you can, you'd at least have to escape it.
I'm too tired right now to look for any other errors.
If you want to edit in place, you might look into ed. It's kind of vi-ish, and lets you do sed-ish operations, and works okay as a non-interactive batch-command processing kind of thingy for performing edits on a file and then saving it.
Of course, if it was me, I'd just be lazy and do (echo whatever ; cat test.csv) > test2.csv
