A long night ahead

After getting my new MBP just before the weekend and spending all weekend syncing my idisk with it, this is just what I didn't want.
Updated to iweb 1.1 and added search and comments to my blog pages, hit publish to .mac and was told that 1.1 is more efficient and did I want to republish my whole site. Well actually I did (eventually) but with 1.7 Gb of website, I figured I'd do it a bit at a time and chose only to update my blog pages.
After a few failures, where iweb couldn't read my idisk quota, I decided to log on to .mac to take a look at my quota, even though I knew there should be no problems. Anyhow simply taking a look seemed to solve the problem (or was it just coincidence) as next try it published OK.
However when I tried looking with my browser my blog had disappeared, I decided to sync with my idisk to see what was going on. 544 files later I have the answer, iweb has given the folder with my blog in it a different name, so all my links to that page will be broken and I need to republish them all.
So I figure I'll republish a few pages at a time so as to avoid tearing my hair out when after publishing for 4 1/2 hrs there is an error and I have to start again. Unfortunately I didn't get the option to publish only the selected pages this time and iweb has now set about republishing my whole website (all 1.7 Gb)
Already had one failed publish due to an error with a file (supposedly) but 2nd time it seems to have passed that file. Fingers crossed for an error free publish, but I won't hold my breath. Even when I get my site republished, I have the big wait while 4 macs in total then sync with my idisk.
It would be nice if I could publish to a folder and then upload manually a bit at a time, by placing it bit by bit in my local copy of my idisk, but that didn't work for me in 1.0.1 why should it now and I reckon it's too early for any one to have any experience with such a procedure under 1.1.

Still trying to publish, keep getting the usual errors, (quota and file error), I rather think my idisk keep running a sync doesn't help. Something must be going on though because I now have 5,920 files that need syncing via idisk.

  • Resizing and exporting to flash = headaches and long nights

I have footage shot in 16:9 PAL DV (interlaced)
Client now wants delivery as a flash file 600 x 400 pixels.
    +How do I get the best result?+
Should I output the file as a PAL DV interlaced and then convert it to flash? The results I got are not very satisfactory.
Should I change the sequence setting within FCP to 600 x 400 pixels square, insert the original clip at 100% (thus clipping a bit off the edges), and deinterlace, and then export to Quicktime? Also not very good results.
+I know that this involves quite a bit of resising, so if anyone has a good workflow suggestion for me, I would be more than happy.+

    Bump. < </div>
Your question would be best answered in a Flash forum. It's not simple and Flash is terrifically misunderstood by most clients. There are FLV and SWF files and there are at least five different Flash encoders you could be using, including Adobe's.
Once you export a top-quality QT out of FCP, it's up to your Flash encoder to create the best possible image file. If you have a Mac-compatible Flash encoder on your FCP machine, you need to investigate the manual and mfr's site for that product.
The best, fastest, easiet way to get FLash done properly is to provide a Flash artist with your QT file.

  • Bummer. Trying to recover Metadata for deleted project

I accidentally deleted a project in Aperture 2.1.1. I found my project in the trash and re-imported it. Great. But no metadata or adjustments were imported. Then I tried a restore using Time Machine for just the single project. Same result. Is there any way to get the metadata and adjustments back or do I have a long night ahead of me? Thanks.

    Nope, not yet...

I have somehow been able to accumulate over 30,000 contacts listed in my backup assistant/Verizon online contacts.  How do I delete them or get someone at Verizon to delete them?

Ouch, long night ahead in your near future. You can log on to your My Verizon account, mouse over My Services, click on Backup Assistant in that list. Now you can either mouse over each contact and delete each one that you don't want, or you can mouse over the contact and click the check mark to the right on each contact on that screen that you don't want. After you have checked all the contacts you don't want, up at the top of that window, right above the the contacts and below the letter index is a small box that says "Actions", click on that box and click on delete, it will ask you if you are sure you want to delete these contacts.
30,000 contacts is massive, get some coffee and be prepared to be in front of the computer for a while, hope this helps.

  • You know you've been on these boards too long...

Not to be a complete copycat here, this is more a release for me than another lame "you know you've..." thread.
I just had this long involved thread about the appropriateness of the XML format for the ant tool config file, as well as the general question of the use of ant at all. Of course jschell came down on the anti-ant side of things (I suspect as a more of a "devil's advocate" position) and things got a little heated, you know how it is. Now you way be wondering where this very interesting thread is. Well, I'd post a link but I can't*, since it was in my dream. Shudder.
(yes it's a bit late for sleep, but it was a long night - on the upside I got to live the rockstar-hanger-on life for a bit, thanks Mark. On the downside I doubt even rockstar-hangers-on don't dream about debate threads on the java fora, so I guess that illusion's been shattered)
    Just thought I'd share

  • IPhone hour ahead, outlook calendar appointments hour behind after syncing

Whenever I sync my iPhone it jumps an hour ahead and all the appointments in Microsoft Outlook 2007 are suddenly shifted an hour back.
First, I checked the time zones on my iPhone and on my computer and they were correct.
Second, I turned off time zone support and auto update on my iPhone. Still the problem exisits.
Third, thank god the times of the appointments in the iPhone are not effected.
I've combed this forum looking for answers, nothing has worked.
    Please help.
I can handle the e-mail problems, but this is too much.

Well, I feel like an idiot, but sometimes the biggest problems have the simplest solutions. I actually did not have my PC set to adjust for daylight savings time. So I turned it on, then had to manually set the clock back an hour. Now the appointments in Outlook are at the correct time and when I sync my iPhone it no longer moves ahead one hour after.
Thank you very much for your help.

  • Screwy Desktop After Last Update

Rather than type again. I'm gonna copy and paste. I was in the wrong place. Thanks for the help, BDAqua.
I am late doing my updates. I have a friend who has broadband. I usually go to his place to do it. I'm on dialup. So I waited and waited. But it wasn't gonna happen anytime soon. My friend got sick and then sicker at the hospital. As it stands he's a lot better. But he's gonna be a the hospital for a least another month. I'm so gland he's gonna make it. The guy almost died twice. I got a horrorible phone call in the middle of the night from his girlfriend saying the doctor said he doesn't believe he will live through the night. I don't think I cried more that night since my dad died. If he ever decided to get another tattoo it should read "Chuck Norris - Beta". He proved the doctors wrong and lived. Right now he has a tracheostomy and a tube going into his stomach for feeding. I can't imagine the horrors he has gone through. He's gonna pull through, but he has a long voyage ahead of him.
Last week I began doing the update myself. This would be for the last ones; QuickTime (now 7.6.2), Java (now 11.9.0), iTunes (now 8.2) and Security. The Security was finished last night.
Everything was fine a couple hours ago. Then I got a fright. I opened one of a desktop folder. The window didn't open to a list, icons instead. I then opened another folder (also desktop) same deal. Not a list. I ran Disc Utilities and checked my permissions. Everything was ok.
I then restarted. A bigger scare.
My desktop has changed, not the background, but the layout. The folders and documents on the desktop had scattered - not where they were before.
I opened TechTools and booted off my eDrive. I ran tests on Volume Structures, File Structure, Finder Info; all said it was okay. Before I did all of this I reused Disc Utlities and checked the drive. It also said it was okay.
I haven't done the update for Safari, that appeared after I finished with the four above. I opted to wait until my friend got better. I use Firefox anyway.
It looks like all my data is there, just that a database or something got deleted or something.
I haven't touched anything hoping it can be restore - if it can be done. If not I guess I could start from scratch and just redo my desktop; folders locations and window viewing prefs.
The bright side is that I made a bootable back-up of my hard drive before I did the updates. I'm glad I was that paranoid.
Specs: I'm using an iBook G4, running OS 10.4.11.
What if anything can be done?
Oh yeah. I'm just a regular user. I'm not that tech savvy. My friend was my Apple expert. I'm kinda flying blind here.
Since writing that I did some additional looking. I checked the folders on the hard drive, not on the desktop.
Those folders are exactly as they should. The folders that are Picture, Documents, Movies and Music as well as Applications and myself are correct. The icons are on the right spots inside their folder. The folders within are also correct, list where it was listed.
It appears just the desktop folders and documents went screwy. I've opened some of them (documents), they work. That's good.
I wonder if I should just redo it, but I should wait until I get a reply. Maybe there something more I need to check or something.

    Thank you Miss Samit.
    I've done as you wrote.
I've recreated my desktop locations. My original plan was to boot off my clone drive and take a screen snap, move it to a flash drive and use it to map my desktop. But then recalled my friend's advice - NEVER change the clone. So I decided to boot off the drive and take out some paper and write out the layout. Restart from my laptop and do the deed.
    Done.
I've restarted four times, waiting a minute or so before I repeated. Each time I did, the screen was as it should; correct layout. It appears to have been fixed.
Thanks for your help, I was feeling very lost. As I wrote I usually go to my friend for help. The guy has fixed and saved my data on my iMacs back in the day. This would be the days when I had a very customized computer. I've learned my lession the hard way. For some bizarre reason I lost USB ability (iMac - Snow). There was some unknown conflict. Since then I don't play with the OS. Not worth the grief.
Sorry for not writing sooner. I didn't sleep much last night, worst case scenarios dancing in my head. As it turned out I slept in. I feel much better now.
I've decided to start a journal of problems and fixes. And various notes. The fist entry will be your solution.
Out of curiosity, what caused this? Or was this just an OS hiccup?
BDAqua thanks for the link. Not sure. I played with terminal ONCE and screwed it up. I was lucky/paranoid to have written notes of what I did. I had to get help puting it back the way it was. I haven't touched terminal since and that would be when I first got my laptop, three years ago. I'm scared of terminal.
I would like to see a demonstration before I use it. Knowing myself, I would screw it up. 'Which idiot did this?' *raises hand*
    I did however download it.

  • Any tips for 'challenging!' multi-cam edit?

Hi all, I might have set myself a bit of a task here but here goes...
I had an opportunity to film my daughters school play over the course of two shows (different nights). On the first night I shot the performance from the back of the auditorium and basically left the cam running for the whole 60 odd minutes then changed tapes for the second half.
On the second night I captured from near the front for close ups and again left the tape running.
With regards to sound I propose to use the recording from the second night (close to stage) as this gave the best balance between children's voices and the sound coming from the CD/Piano.
The challenge now is to edit! All I want to do is run with the whole tape from the 2nd night and cut to long shots when I need to see the whole stage - lip sync won't be so much of a problem in this case! I still need slight adjustments though.
So, any tips out there? Areas I am scratching my head over at the moment include:-
    1. The whole sync thing - how can you do this scene by scene (as it was different nights)
    2. Capture. Is it easier to simply capture the whole thing then go in with the razor balde tool and cut scenes or would it be better to use log and capture scene by scene?
    3. Invest in a 2nd cam, talk the wife in to filming as well and sync them at the start!
    4. Sure there will be other areas I will face in the nights ahead but what should I also consider?
While the end product will be a few fund raising (for the drama club) DVD's - and as such I can get away with lots - I would like it to be as slick as possible so any suggestions would be gratefully received.
Something I have learned already is to buy a better tripod - cheap non-fluid ones are rubbish. Invest in decent mics (I use a Sony HDR-HC1 with an external Sony mic) and to get there hours before it starts to bag the front row! How do these people reserve seats half a day in advance? One last thing - why oh why do camcorder manufacturers put that annoying stop start beep on their cams? I have got so many of these recorded on the soundtrack (from other users) it is driving me crazy!
Anyway, back to the FCP 5.1 editing....
    Thanks in advance all,
    Michael

    Jim, Brian, Studio X,
Many thanks for the replies - they are much appreciated and I will be working through them in detail!
Have to admit it did not even cross my mind that there might be copyright issues with a kids play. The aim was to simply let the parents have a copy in return for a very small donation to the drama club. Oh well, perhaps the DVD will be free but strongly encouraged to make an, unconnected, $15 donation!
Interesting to see 2 different takes on the editing, just what I wanted though so I can try different options so thanks again.
Studio X - really interested in the Soundtrack Pro options to clean audio - I will take a look at this. I have also been wondering about investing in a better external mic. Even so far as to go to the Sony HDR-A1 for the XLR inputs. Any thoughts as to which mic you would go for if you had either a single 3.5mm input to play with or, if I go the XLR route, which mic would suit the A1?
Thanks again everyone - fantastic advice.

  • Time Machine Restore Finishes But Wont Boot And Not Enough Restored

I have just had need to restore my MacBook from my Time Machine backup of yesterday.
Basically I boot from the Leopard DVD, Select Restore and pick the date/time of the backup.
Restore start and finishes OK (if a little short on time I noticed) but on first boot the MacBook crashes and displays a message saying the Mac needs powering off/on.
After this the MacBook will not boot again and displays the same message.
If I boot off the DVD and run disk utility I see only 40gb or so used on the disk when my machine is around 150gb.
I have tried a number of restores going back a day each time and each restore produces the same result.
Can someone please give me some suggestions as to how I might successfully restore from the backup.
If I can't is it possible to reinstall Leopard fresh and then connect the Time Machine drive to the restored system and view the backup from there ?? If so how please.
Many thanks in advance. I can feel a very sleepless night ahead of me.
    Kind Regards and Seasonal Greetings

Have you done a +*Repair Disk+* on your TM drive, per #A5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum?
My confidence in Time Machine has taken a severe dent here so I am now going to be taking manual backups of all my data, itunes and photos on a regular basis as well as continuing to use the iPod for storage.
Consider what many of us do: keep a completely separate, independent backup in the form of a "bootable clone" via CarbonCopyCloner (which I use) or SuperDuper, in addition to full TM backups. You might even want to get a portable external HD for this, so you can take it to a secure off-site location. (I learned long ago, usually the hard way, not to trust my backups 100% to any single app or hardware.) And there was a thread just a couple of weeks ago where a full restore had nearly completed when BAM! the TM drive failed!
Just wish I could understand where things went wrong in the first place so I can ensure it doesn't happen again. I'll be sure to browse time machine regulalrly from now one to check things.
From your description of what you see in your backups, it's hard to tell what might have caused this very unusual situation. Something may have gone wrong with one of the previous restores, or there is/was hardware problems with one of the drives, or some sort of OSX problem.

  • "Dashboard Advisory" in Keychains/System Keychain?

I've just noticed something in Keychains, System Keychain, called +Dashboard Advisory+, issued by +Dashboard Advisory CA+. It reads, +Expires: Tuesday, April 29,2036 2:09 PM America/New York.+
*Below that in red there is: +This certificate was signed by an unknown authority+*
(I also have X509Anchors in Keychains. But there, in green, unlike the Dashboard Advisory, it is, more reassuringly, written, +this certificate is valid+)
Can anyone tell me, please, what this is and if it is legitimate?
(A short Google search seems to turn up something about a Daemon phoning home to Apple re. Dashboard Widgets (installed after the 10.4.7 Update), but I'm not sure this is what I have, and I certainly don't understand why, then, it was "signed by an unknown authority."

  • Droid Razr HD, only hours old. Won't power on.

I was listening to Pandora, enjoying my new phone, when the music just stopped, I was unable to restart the music so I tried reinstalling the app, but it would not let me install it. "Invalid package." So I turned off my phone, and now I can not get it back on. I tried the pwr key+volume down(several times.) thing but nothing. And even more alarming the phone is getting hot and it is not plugged in or powering on.

I don't mean to be rude, because I appreciate the feedback, but if you read the OP, you'll see that I already tried the power button vaolum combo. Also, to the plugging it in suggestion. I can only see that damaging the phone even further, because again, refering back to the OP, the phone was getting very very hot, when it wasn't plugged in. It's only stopped getting hot, because, presumably, the battery completely died. And again, I mean no disrespect. However, now, because my battery was dead, I decided to plug it in to the wall charger, and the green led came on and stayed on. I still could not get the phone on. Holding down the power and volume button, caused the light blink as if I had a notifications. Holding down just the power causes the light to go off for a moment and then back on. And another change, now the led is a constant slow blink.
I plan on taking it back to verizon and getting a new replacement after class tomorrow, but I would still like figure out what is going on here. I have a long night of studying ahead of me, and I would like to be able to use my phone.

  • Why does Pages 09 hang for 1min30sec? The spinning ball, etc...

I am using Pages 09 version 4.3 (not the iWork package, just Pages 09)
Operating system 10.8.3 with 4 Gb memory on an iMac from around 2009 (Intel core 2 duo)
I had been using Quark Xpress for a couple decades and wanted to save a book I did in Pages so I can sell it in the Apple bookstore.
So I saved a Quark document as a pdf.
Then I used an on-line service to convert the pdf to a word document.
Then I opened the word doc in Pages and saved it as a Pages file.
I am in the process of doing a lot of reformatting, but I'm not surprised all the formatting didn't carry over, considering all the flie formats I went through.
The document is about 40 pages and has perhaps 40 pictures, but I do resize them in Photoshop so the Pages document file is only 4.9 Mb.
Pages isn't all that different from Quark, it just seems to hide things in different places.
The problem is that every so often when I click in the document, I get the spinning ball and Pages hangs for 1 minute and 30 seconds (doesn't it seem odd that it is always for the same length of time?). Then it comes out of its coma and I carry on.
Using the Activity Monitor I see Pages using 99.8% or 100% or even 100.5% of CPU. And The Pages line is in red type that reads "Pages (Not Responding).
While I wait for Pages to come to its senses, I can surf the Web, or use other programs, which seems peculiar because if the CPU is 100% occupied, I would think it could.
When I go to the dock and click on the Pages icon, it doesn't come to the front. I have to move any other windows so I can see my Pages document and click on it to bring it to the front.
I went into FontBook and checked all my fonts and deleted a bunch. When I reopened the document, it said it was missing a font, so I selected a substitute, the document opened and I re-saved it with a new name.
Sometimes it hangs when I click in text, but just now it was hanging every time I tried to click on a line behind the main text box.
Just now it hung when I started to go to the Edit menu. I waited and now it's back, as if nothing happened.
    Any ideas?

After a very long night it seems my problems were solved by
    1. making sure all the in-line pictures had the correct wrap around settings and
    2. deleting some lines that had originally been underscores, but wound up being independent lines behind the main text box and
    3. checking my fonts in FontBook and deleting the iffy ones (I dunno if this made any real difference, but I mention it anyway).
Every time I would select a line there would be a long pause. Initially 1 1/2 minutes, but shorter as I deleted the lines one by one.
There were also pauses when trying to select in-line pictures, and sometimes for no good reason that i could discern.
Anyway, now that the pictures' wrap around is re-set, and the lines are delected, there are bo more pauses!
Whew. I spent hours watching that ball spin. Still, it was better than re-creating the whole book.

  • How to create a turn-based multiplayer online game?

Hello. This is my first time here. I am familiar with programming games and have been doing so for 20 years. However, I'm completely new to using Java to do so. In the past, I wrote games in BASIC, Blitz, and C++ using DirectX. Being familiar with C/C++, the Java language syntax is not a hurdle for me.
I've never created a networking game, but I feel that if I tried to create one using one of the programming languages I already know that I would succeed at doing so. (I'm just trying to show that I feel confident in programming with the languages that i know)
The dilemma here is that someone else would like me to program a turn'based multiplayer game for them in Java.
I've downloaded the NetBeans 4.1 IDE and uncovered a lot of terms and such that I'm unfamiliar with.
What I'm looking for from you guys is an overview of what I need to do to achieve my ultimate goal of creating this online game.
As a reference, I need to create a game very similar to this one:
    http://www.tacticsarena.com/play/
Click on the "Launch Game: Tactics Arena Online" link to see the game.
Create a new account to play (accounts are free).
Upon starting the NetBeans IDE, I found that I could create several different types of projects. I guess first of all, I need to know what kind of project is best suited to make this type of game.
To name a few, I have to select from:
    Java Application
Java Class Library (is this an Applet?)
    Web Application
    Enterprise Application
    EJB Module
Then I guess I would like to know if any of the above projects would be used to make the clients interface or the server side software or both? Or do I need to use some other kind of software/programming language/etc. to create the server side? (As a side note, typically what kind of Operating system would the server be using? I ask because I may set one up myself for testing purposes.)
Somewhere I came upon the term 'Servlet'. Is this some kind of Java server application? Do I need/want to be using this?
As you can see, I'm very lost at where to begin. I'm not at all unfamiliar with programming. I'm just unfamiliar with Java.

    Hi WolRon
I am in the process of learning Java myself and from what i have read, you have a long road ahead of you!
To start this Project the following will be essential for you to know:
Applets - if this is going to an online game
Multiple Threads - for the Server side
Swing - for the GUI on both sides
AWT - help work with the user input (mouseListeners, buttonListeners, etc)
    And knowledge of a database.
those are the most obvious things that you will need to understand.
I strongly suggest buying a Java book from which you need to start at the beginning. Although the concept of OOP is the same through most languages Java has terms - as do all languages- that will be different from the other languages. Starting at the beginning will be beneficial to your Java coding future.
    Good luck.
