A long on speed external drive

A lot of posts are coming up about external drives: this one's a beaute, and with fw 800, yes it really flies:

Great shop - and we all love a great drive.
Cheers

Howdy boys, been a bit busy but looks like you guys have found the spot and that's really good...suprising how few people know OWC but they've been awesome to me.
I'm looking at the 500gb b slot hard drive for like 117. But I'm unofficially waiting for the Macbook Pros to come out new.
You can go all the way up to a 32gb memory installed Mac Pro 3.0 through OWC, they have a special contract with Apple to do this, just an example as none of us in music need that total tonnage of ram. But they get quite a few special deals; like the one you that you found sounds real good IS.
Cheers, anytime now my course is set for highspeed, but satellites must be lowered...the cosmos must be set...coming from deep on the N. CA coast: muZAK.

  • I'd love some help trying to figure out why my 2008 MacBook no longer recognizes my external drive and now is not downloading photos from my iphone....?

After many years of having no problems at all on my Macbook, I recently figured I should finally upgrade my OS. I did that about three weeks ago, updating to Snow Leopard (10.6.8). I used Time Machine at least once after the OS upgrade but now Time Machine no longer recognizes the external drive I have used for all these years to back up. The MacBook does not "see" it. (Disk Utility does however.) The computer then also stopped recognizing another La Cie back-up that I have and now... my iPhone cannot download photos? Yikes.
I have, of course, shut down numerous times, used different cables (that worked for some) and the two USB drives. I even used a firewire. Nothing worked. I also tried to "Repair disk" on Disk Utility. It didn't work either, giving me an error (that I didn't save, sorry).
I read many other discussions on the file format of the external drive and of course I'd be happy to reformat the external drives--however, it is obviously a tad nerve-wracking to reformat drives before having an accessible back-up. Suggestions? I do not remember what file format they have but am pretty sure it's not the Mac file system someone mentioned. The drives are a 2009 WD "My Passport Elite" and La Cie 2007 d2 Quadra,
In terms of other hardware available, we do have another MacBook Air but it has  started rejecting both drives as well (without the Snow Leopard upgrade). We have an old Dell but it wouldn't have the disk space to help out much.
Any thoughts on the process involved would be welcome.  Any ideas on the iPhone rejection would be helpful as well! It is a 30gig iPhone 4 that has 20 or so gigs free (not clear as iTunes says that there are abour 18 Gigs on the phone but 24 free gigs? I may be bad at math but that's 40 gigs...).
I am checking out iCloud but apparently there are only 55 gigs available?
Will be glad to hear any thoughts. Thanks!

    Good afternoon Lyssa,
Phew. First of all, thanks in advance...these blogs are always comforting help!
So, to answer your questions: For the age of the hard drive.Well, I added memory a couple of years ago (RAM and hard drive). Being a mom leads me to eat up a fair amount of gigs with photos of my kids and, in fact, I think I entirely replaced the original drive, so it is a couple years younger than 2008 since I did that in March 2010. If there is some way to verify that (whether or not I replaced the entire drive), I'm all ears. I have 311 Gigs free, so it is not a space issue. I verified the startup disk on Disk Utilityand nothing showed up.
    Question 1- What formats...
The La Cie is format Windows NT Filesystem 3G ....At the time that I bought it I was still using a PC as well as a Mac and was told by afriend to use this format...
The WD is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I again tried to repair the WD last night and this is the error message: "Error: DiskUtility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
Also, Time Machine tried again to back-up and gave  me this error: "Files can't becopied onto the backup disk because it appears to be 'read only'. You may needto repair or reformat the disk using Disk Utility. If the disk can't berepaired, you must use a different disk for backups. Open Time Machinepreferences to select a different backup disk."
    Question 2. Other cables...
I used two other cables with the WD and that didn't change anything.
Question 3... Fire Wire from the La Cie
Yes, I used the Firewire cable from the La Cie and it is indeed present, though still not visible in Finder. Since it is not Mac OSExtended I know that I can't use Time Machine with it.
    So, in summary...
I can plug in the La Cie and it is functional on the MacBook, visible on Disk Utility but not visible in Finder. The WD drive is not visible and not functional. So we can think it is indeed the WD that is not working.... Also, the iphone photos did, in the end, get downloaded, so it is not something more general.
    Causes...
I forgot to mention that there is a "lost+found" file on the WD which apparently points to a UNIX /OS issue?
    Some kind of "insurance"?....
I'm curious about how people avoid this kind of issue. You just regularly replace back-up drives and hard drives before problems come up? Time Machine is great and saves many of us from disasters, however, knowing that your Time Machine back-ups are vulnerable makes the whole system insecure. No way to have alarms ring before the drive goes out?
    As for ways ahead...
It seems that I ought to be able to copy off of the WD to the MacBook then erase it and reformat it and start over again. However, I haven’t been able to see its contents except on random occasions. If you have any ideas on how to copy the Time Machineback-ups from the WD, again, I'm all ears!

  • MacBook Air No Longer Sees Remote External Drive

I have an iMac with a FW800 connected external hard drive. I use it for Time Machine backups. Also use an Airport Extreme for wireless connection. My MacBook Air at one time was able to "see" that external drive via the Airport and I used it to backup the laptop with Time Machine. Now, all of a sudden, the MBA no longer sees the external drive. What has happened? I use the MBA only occasionally, and told Time Machine to backup only when I tell it to. So, LOTS probably has changed since the last backup. But, what change has broken this connection? My iMac sees it just fine and does Time Machine backups just fine. When I want to share the DVD drive of the iMac, that works as it should. I just can't see that dang external drive any longer. Both machines are at 10.5.6
Can you folks give me some places to start looking to get things working again?

Does the time machine volume meet the requirements?
-internal drive, not start up disk
    -XSAN volume
    -USB drive
    -fire wire drive
    -eSATA drive
-network server via AFP (from machines running Leopard), including machines running file sharing
the volume must be formated as Mac OS Extended or Mac OS Extended (case-sensitive)
    You can't use:
    -Boot Camp partition
    -iPod
    -disk image
    -AirPort Disk
    -iDisk

  • Can No Longer Burn To External Drive

About two years ago my then six-year-old 800 mhz flat panel iMac's SuperDrive started acting erratic. Rather than replace the internal drive I purchased an external LaCie firewire drive. I was able to both read and write from this drive.
I am not positive, but I believe that I subsequently upgraded to OSX 10.4.11. And not too long ago I had no trouble burning a music CD from an iTunes playlist in the LaCie drive. In any case, the other day I tried to burn a simple data DVD of some photos to a DVD in the LaCie drive. I have been completely unable to burn a disc. I've tried burning from the finder, burning via Backup, and burning via Toast. All have failed.
I have wasted about a dozen discs so far. Often the burn will seem to complete, but fail verification. Sometimes when it fails verification it says it was because of a data transmission error, other times it says a sector failed.
Other times the burn will terminate early and the disc will ejec. The error messages are never consistent. Sometimes it will say "Buffer Underrun." But the LaCie drive protects against that, and I've gotten the Buffer Underrun message even when burning at only 1X. Can't go any slower than that.
Blank media inserted in the LaCie drive takes a long time to appear on desktop, and appears as a folder with a "burn" emblem on it, not as a disc. I've tried swapping Firewire cables but that hasn't made any difference.
The internal SuperDrive is completely dead by now. If I insert a disc into the internal drive there is no startup noise, no whirring, etc. Eventually the machine just spits out the disc.
I don't need to burn discs often, but this is driving me nuts. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I get the impression that Tiger has a real problem burning to external drives.

    Daniel,
For several years I've been burning optical media of every kind on what is likely your drive. (Because they're sensitive to mechanical trauma, I bought a Firewire/USB Multi-drive encased in a small tank my cat can't move.
Your desktop icon struck me. I fiddled with 'System Preferences', but couldn't reproduce it. (My choice for blank media is 'Disk Utility.) Normally, only mounted devices appear on the desktop: this means a file system compatible with the Mac's was recognized (after a lot of handshaking) and attached to it. Hence you can drag an object from the drive to the Desktop.
The other thing that struck me was the variety of errors, rather than one. This tends to support BDAqua's suggestion of power problems. I'd check the cable and its plugs carefully. If yor Superdrive reported a variety of errors as well, I'd suggest a problem with your iMac.
There were many problems with the LaCie drive when 10.4.9 appeared (big changes to the kernel). Kludges & hacks ran amok, but all everything has worked after a few patches by Apple. That was years ago. My LaCie (Samsung w/Lightscribe) has never had another problem
Does either of your drive burn CDs? This I ask because of BDAqua's second statement. There's nothing simple about DVD. An engineer, writing about how it worked, ended with 'it's a miracle it works at all'.
When a optical drive dies a natural death (all is ephemeral), the DVD lasers get knocked out of alignment or burn out first. CD continues working.
So, you know the routine: be sure your blank media are blank (or, try a DVD-RW to be safe), change buses if you can or cables if you can't, then try a friend's burner. You can visit LaCie and install a new driver. (Though, like Adobe, it has an installer installer.) I'm not sure whether you need to be in warranty to place a 'trouble ticket' with LaCie; but that's a possibility. The desktop icons would suggest an inconsistency at Apple (which is next to heresy) or a problem with your iMac. Perhaps other have seen this. In any case, your symptoms are not the typical ones expected from a naturally dying drive.

  • No longer recognizing LaCie external drive.

I have been using a LaCie Quadra external drive to backup my files. Since the last system upgrade the external drive is no longer being recognized. I have followed the troubleshooting suggestions from the LaCie site i.e. checking with different cables. When I connect with the USB nothing is listed in system profile, however when using a firewire cable to connect both 400 and 800 system profiler lists "unknown device". When I run disk utility: repair disk it says the disc is OK. I have a tried all of the troubleshooting on my iBook which has the same system with same results. I have also tried a different LaCie Quadra drive which has not been used with same results, so have concluded there must be something in the system rather than hardware. Any suggestions about where to go from here?

I have also tried a different LaCie Quadra drive which has not been used with same results
I had a LaCie Quadra drive exhibit similar symptoms recently, and it turned out to be a bad power brick, even though the drive seemed to power up OK. When you tried replacing your LaCie drive with the other one, did you also use the other one's power adaptor?

  • MBA no longer reads the external drive - can anyone help?

    Hi
My MBA no longer reads the external iOmega HD. I use the iOmega to store all my files and for the TimeMachine.
My old Powerbook G4 continues can read it so it's not a problem with the external drive. Also, the MBA can read another external drive that I have. So the problem is specific to this MBA and iOmega drive. I suspect, but am not sure that the problem is due to a recent system update.
Can anyone figure what went wrong?
    Thanks.

is the drive's firmware up to date?
is the drive being powered from the usb port? perhaps it is just on the limit of the power the mba can supply, can you try it with an external power supply?

  • Go Flex TV media player can no longer see the external drive on my airport

Hi there I have an external hard drive hooked up via usb to my airport extreme. I recently purchased a goflex seagate media center for my tv. At first the seagate recognized my external drive with no problem. Streaming files from the hard drive with no problem. Now the media center cannot see or log onto the drive it. It still connects to internet via my airport, I can stream you tube however it cannot see the external drive. I can access the external drive with my mac book via the airport extreme with no problem. I'm at a total loss any suggestions would be helpful.
    Thanks,

  • Jaguar OS no longer is able to mount external drives

I am using a PowerMac 7600 with a Sonnet G4 processor (OS 10.2.8) to download streaming audio to an external hard drive. This has served me very well for a number of years. All of a sudden, the 7600 can no longer mount an external drive, neither USB nor FW. The Drive shows up in Disk Utility but the name of the volume is grayed out. The problem exists with several different drives which mount OK to my MacBook. Using the Disk Utility to attempt to mount the drive has no effect. Neither Rebooting nor Repair of Permissions solves the problem.
    Suggestions please.

  • WD External Drive Won't work with Time Machine or anything else

I am really hoping someone can help me. I have been using Time Machine to backup my hard drive on my Macbook and using a WD drive. Everything worked until right before Christmas. Something happened and I don't know what and I am not sure the last backup worked. I can no longer see the external drive in the finder, but I can see it in Disk Utility and it shows up in About this Mac. When I've had the drive connected today, the disk is turning and the status light is flashing. I can see data being written in the activity monitor which makes me think something is happening with the drive. In Disk Utility, I can eject the drive, but can't select it to do any first aid or other activities. Anyone have any suggestions?

You might want to try resetting your MacBook's FireWire Bus to see if that cures the issue: http://tinyurl.com/7p6jfx.

  • I moved iTunes TV files from my PC to an external drive. I want to return them to my PC so I can watch during travel, but cannot figure out how to move them back. Can you help? Thanks in advance.

I moved some iTunes TV shows from my PC hard drive to an external drive. I can watch them as long as the external drive is plugged in, but I now want to move them back to my PC to watch from the internal drive, but cannot figure out how to do it. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

Is it just the TV Shows that you moved to the external, or did you consolidate all your media there?
What is the current location of the media folder given under Edit > Preferences > Advanced?
If the media folder is currently pointed to a folder on the internal drive you could select the files you want to copy, then right-click and select Consolidate Files from the pop-up menu. This will leave the originals behind. If you want to move specific files to a new media folder then my script ConsolidateByMoving can do this.

  • G'day.  I am using iMovie 11 and need to clear disk space.  How can I do that using an external drive, leaving me the option to go back and make changes or access old events or projects from that external drive?

G'day.  I am using iMovie 11 and need to clear disk space.  How can I do that using an external drive, leaving me the option to go back and make changes or access old events or projects from that external drive?

The slightly bigger question is whether you want to move all movie content to the external drive (essentially meaning that drive will always need to be attached when you're working with your videos), or whether you just want to archive older videos off to the external drive.
If you want to move all videos, then just move the 'Movies' folder in your home directory to the external drive, then create an alias of the external 'Movies' back in to your home directory. Now the 'Movies' icon in your home directory will point to the external drive and everything will just work (as long as the external drive is attached when you launch iMovie)
If you want to archive older movies then each Movie should have its own subdirectory within your Movies folder. These can easily be moved off to the external drive, and moved back should you ever need to work on those movies again.

  • 10.4.9 Destroyed my external drive?

Ok.. taking a deep breath. My new 802.11n apple extreme base station could no longer recognize my external drive. (post 10.4.9 install). I am not sure if the new aebs killed it or 10.4.9 or a combination of both.

So I connected the external drive directly to my laptop (tried both USB2 and firewire).

I don't know if they monitor, but they do look at
them at some point. When I called Apple 3 days ago,
the tech (who didn't inspire much confidence) said
"I'm looking at the discussions and there does seem
to be a lot of issues." Of course, then he just
recommended I do an archive and install, which he
    read from someone's post.
Anyway, Apple does appear to be aware of the problem.
After joining the Apple Developer Connection
(ADC--it's free) and posting the problem (along with
links to 17 other posts with the same problem), I
received this response from Apple today:
This is a follow up... After further investigation
it has been determined that this is a known issue,
which is currently being investigated by engineering.
This issue has been filed in our bug database under
    the original Bug ID#
o they appear to know about it.
If anyone else wants to bug Apple (pardon the pun)
about this, become a member of the ADC at
https://connect.apple.com/MemberSite . Then go to the
Bug Reporter to report your problem.
You'll get an email response with a bug number so you
    can track the issue.
Maybe if Apple gets enough bug reports on this
problem, engineering will be quick to come up with a
    solution.
I'm curious to know exactly what the bug was that they say is an issue.
Also to answer the question that most you have, when you get the error your mac doesn't recognize the volume there is very little you can do to fix this. Usually something has corrupt the file system, which are all the b-tree and volume structure errors in disk utility, caused by improperly demounting a drive, a bad write to the drive, a problem with the drive, or bad blocks to name a few. The usual fix for this is to run a data recovery program to get the file off the drive then reformat the drive. Once its reformatted you can use the drive again. If you want to test the drive you can do a zero all data format and it will check the drive surface for bad blocks and the ability to write to the drive.

No one can be sure of the effect of 10.4.9. And problems are still being worked out with 802.11n compatibility. However, I don't think that it would "destroy" a disk like you've said. You might try a program like Disk Genius to try to repair your external drive. No one would like to think about it - but it may also just have been a coincidence and your drive has failed. At any rate, it sounds like you stand a lot to lose, so you may want to invest in Disk Genius. Trying reviving your disk and then worry about the Airport issues later.
