A lot of memory is used when multiple tabs are open

Is there anything that can be done about the insane memory usage in Firefox when multiple tabs are open? I often have 20+ tabs open and the amount of RAM that Firefox uses when I have it open with this many tabs is just ridiculous. As an example of this, I just restarted Firefox after checking the Windows Task Manager. The Task manager said that Firefox was using 1.2 GB of RAM. I did have 32 tabs open, but this seems excessive even for this many tabs. Some of the tabs were image heavy, but none of them had any video in them. I'd think 10 MB per tab of RAM would be plenty to cover these kinds of pages, maybe 20 MB at most. The upper end of that range would be 640 MB of RAM. Instead, it appears to be using an average of 40 MB of RAM per page when this many tabs are open.
Is there anything that can be done to reduce amount of memory being used when multiple tabs are open? It really shouldn't need this much RAM to serve this many pages.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

  • Safari warning before quitting when multiple tabs are open?

I'm a rather clumsy typist who often uses Apple+Tab to toggle through my open programs. This works great 99% of the time, but that other 1% is rather frustrating considering that the Q key is right next to Tab.
Apple guys, please implement a pop up/drop down warning when attempting to quit Safari when multiple tabs are open (or at least the option to enable or disable it). I use this browser for work and often have many tabs open, so accidentally quitting the browser only impedes on my workday. I know I should be more accurate, but isn't that what part of progress is? The empowerment of laziness? =)
Thanks for your time, and hopefully we see this included in soon-to-come upgrades!
Oh, and if this feature is already available, feel free to show me the way.

I created and modified the Safari Keyboard Shortcut
Quit (⌘+Q) command to (⌘ControlQ) by using System
    Preferences...>Keyboard Shortcuts.
    ;~)
Great suggestion! But, the default Quit (⌘+Q) command is still in effect. I've looked about in trying to deactivate it, but can't seem to find it. How did you get rid of yours?

  • After Installing Bitdefender 2011 Firefox is very slow and worse when multiple tabs are open

Firefox performs very poorly after I installed Bitdefender 2011. There was no such problem with Bitdefender 2009. When multiple tabs are open, switching between them is not possible until tab contents are completed.

As ninjafox says, the problem seems to be the BitDefender Anti-phishing Toolbar. Disabling this through Tools -> Add-ons and restarting Firefox seems to fix the problem for that session. However, the problem then reappears when the computer is restarted, presumably because BitDefender re-enables the toolbar.
Another way of disabling all add-ons when starting Firefox is to hold down Shift while clicking on the icon (Windows only I think - at least doesn't work on Ubuntu for me).

  • Firefox is crashing when multiple tabs are open

I have used Firefox for years but have never had so much trouble as I am having in the last few days. Constant crashing when I have multiple tabs open. I used to be able to have as many as a dozen tabs open. Now if I have as few as 3, crash after crash after crash after crash. On both my laptop and PC. I have run all my antivirus and nothing is coming up there. Anyone know what the heck is going on?

  • Flash works, but causes IE8 to hang when multiple tabs are open

I have a problem which is very consistent...  If I open IE8 to my home page (non flash), then open another tab (and go no where, just a clean tab) and then try to close IE completely (saying yes to close all tabs prompt).  IE hangs for about 30 seconds before shutting down.  If I disable the add-on for flash and then repeat the steps, IE closes right away without incident.  Any thoughts?  Happens every time...
As a side note, this is a XenDesktop Windows 7 image fully patched and running the most current version of the Flash plug-in.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Firefox crashes when i clear recent history if multiple tabs are open, is anyone else experiencing this?

Firefox crashes (hangs, requires me to force close, and then doesn't actually clear the history) when i clear recent history if multiple tabs are open, i do this so i only lose the history and can maintain the tabs i want for the next session.
I have always done this in Versions 3 without an issue, since moving to Version 4 it happens semi regularly. the more tabs i have open the higher the likelyhood of an error

  • High memory usage when many tabs are open (and closed)

When I open Firefox the memory usage is about 70-100 MB RAM. When I'm working with Firefox I often open 15-20 tabs at once, then I close them and open others. Memory usage increaes up to 450 - 500 MB RAM. After closing the tabs the usage usually decreases, but after sometime. It starts decreasing very slow and never comes back to the level from the beginning. After few hours of work Firefox uses about 400 MB RAM even if one tab is open. First I thought it's because of my plugins (Firebug, Speed Dial, Adlock Plus) but I've checked it and it's not. I reinstalled Firefox but the problem occurs as well. I'm not sure if it's normal. Could you help me, please?

    Hi,
Not an exact answer but please [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Reducing_memory_usage_(Firefox) see this.] The KB article ponders through various general situations which may or may not be applicable to specific instances but nevertheless could be helpful.

  • Even after enabling "Warn me when closing multiple tabs", firefox closes without any warning even if multiple tabs are open.

I recently installed Firefox 4.0 and in the options, under the section "Tabs", I have enabled "Warn me when closing multiple tabs". But if I have multiple tabs opened with websites loaded in them, and then try to close the browser, it simply closes. No warnings are shown (which was there in previous versions). Couple of times I clicked on the close button of browser and then realized that I had some important sites opened in different tabs, which I lost as it didn't warn me. Can you please let me know whether this is a bug or a mistake from my side?

I'm sure you are using Private Browsing mode in Firefox 4. I have also the same problem and I tried to uncheck this option after many times accessing about:config\browser.warnOnquit. And it's wonderful, the warning cameback. I think it's a bug about Private Browsing mode. Hope Mozilla's Developers will fix it.

  • The privacy option doesn't work in 5.0: There's no notification given when multiple tabs are closed.

The privacy option in 5.0 doesn't work.
When exiting Firefox with multiple tabs open, no notification is given...
How can I go back to Firefox 4?
I had the google toolbar when I had firefox 4... I upgraded to 5.0 and it still works... My friend tried to load it and it doesn't work.

''The privacy option in 5.0 doesn't work.''
Do you mean that Privacy options can't be accessed in the Options dialog, or Private Browsing doesn't work??
Could you test with a new profile to see whether the update might have caused a settings problem, or you have an incompatible add-on?
First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information]. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
Next, close Firefox and fire up the Profile Manager to create a new profile: [https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Managing+profiles Managing profiles].
If that work, you can migrate your bookmarks, saved passwords, and other key settings to the new profile, see: [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Recovering+important+data+from+an+old+profile Recovering important data from an old profile].
    Hope this helps.

  • Bug: Safari - controls disappear after returning from horizontal tilt back to vertical when multiple tabs are op

    Apple Team,
I would like to report a bug in Safari on iPhone 6 plus/6 on iOS 8.1.2. Here is what happens,
Launch multiple tabs/instances of Safari (at least 2) and stay in vertical mode.
Now, switch to display multiple windows using the overlapping square icon.
Flip the phone in horizontal position and then return to upright/vertical position.
The icons at the bottom will show momentarily and will then disappear, leaving no option to launch a new new or return from multi-window mode unless you select one of the safari instance.
Tthanks and hope this gets addressed.

  • InDesign keeps crashing on type tool/when multiple files are opened??

I've 'trashed' my preferences, updated both Suitcase 3 and CS5 to the latest updates...and still having issues. Just constant crashing whenever I open multiple files, or as soon as I enter a text box to make edits.

    And a sample process:

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hmm yes, I've just had my first crash of the day - tried to package a file and it froze when copying the font files over.
Well, that does seem a plausible summary of what is happening. Your crash report is of particular interest, because it doesn't really implicate InDesign:
    Thread 34 Crashed:
    0   com.apple.CoreFoundation           0x91f6f65f _CFURLIsFileURL + 15
    1   com.apple.CoreFoundation           0x91fd2a80 CFURLSetResourcePropertiesForKeys + 32

    8   libSystem.B.dylib                  0x90a060de thread_start + 34
so, that is a crash in Apple code. Now, of course, the apple code was called from InDesign, and there's a certain degree of garbage-in-garbage-out. If you ask the operating system to copy a nonexistent file to a nonexistent device, it might crash. It shouldn't but it might.
And if we look at thread 0, which is InDesign code, we can sort of see where InDesign invoked the operating system:
Thread 0:  Main Thread  Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread

So, where does that leave us? Well, we would like to know what file is being copied, and why the file copy operation caused the operating system to crash the program.
Are you sure it was a font? Could it have been copying another linked file?
I don't suppose you have any folks around the office who know their way around Apple's Xcode tools, that are used for developing Objective C applications? There are some ways to figure out what file is causing InDesign to crash, but they're all kind of cryptic and annoying to explain without doing it in person...
If not, let me know and I'll try to figure out a simple way to explain it... (and to figure out which of the cryptic tools are the best ones to recommend for this situation. A question that might take me some time to answer....)

  • Acrobat stops working when multiple PDFs are opened together, is this a bug?

Not sure this is the correct thread but then none of the threads are obviously the correct place for this question.  I am running W7 last updated a week ago so it should be running all the correct progs and drivers.  Acrobat XI Pro is Version 11.0.10, I have thought about updating to DC but I'm about to transfer the progs to my portable as I travel widely and don't currently see the point.
I have just started to notice that if I drag a single file from file manager to an open Acrobat window it opens without error but when I highlight more than one file and drag them across they open, then while the final file is displaying itself on the screen Acrobat throws a wobbly and stops working.  Is this a known bug?  Happens every time I open 2 files. Windows has been restarted from scratch and it still happens.  Happens whether I highlight the files in file manager then <right click> Open With Adobe Acrobat XI or whether I drag the files across to an open window.  Happens whether Acrobat is already open or when it is closed.  Happens with more than 2 files as well.
I have noticed that file manager does take a while to display a preview of the file when the preview pane is open and thought that it might be the preview pane that is causing problems.  I then closed the preview pane and opened 3 files without a problem, then opened 8 files at the same time and the programme fell apart again.  Could be to do with the Microsoft File Manager but I'm interested to know if this is a common problem or not?  I did a search on file opening errors in the Acrobat forum without success so am assuming it is unusual.

Thanks, seems to solve some of the problem, perhaps I need to uncheck more in this dialogue box...  May be 'a' correct answer but not the complete solution.  Anyway if all I need to do is uncheck a choice in a dialogue box then it must be a bug or driver incompatability as there seems to be no reason why I shouldn't be able to use 2D graphics acceleration.
Works if you highlight several PDFs in File Manager and then right click and 'Open with Adobe Acrobat', the error still occurs if I drag these files into an open instance of Acrobat beyond two files.  Also seems to be more of a problem if one of the files is a 'colour document ' or 'greyscale document' scanned by Acrobat itself.

  • How do I print a single image when multiple images are open?

There was discussion on this back in 2009 but I hope that things have been put right - if they have, I can't find the answer.
I have multiple images open and want to print just the top image. I can't do it - PSE prints all of them and uses the same settings for all of them!
The solution appears to be to select the image to be printed in the project bin and then print. But I hate the project bin - simply a waste of screen area.
Is using the project bin the only way to do this?
    Mac OS 10.6.8

Click in the project bin to select it before you enter the print window.
Oops, sorry, just saw your comment about that. Yes, the only way unless you want to just remove the others once in the PSE print window.

  • Firefox 5 crashes constantly when multiple pages are open. What's going on?

I was made by your team to update from Firefox 4.x to Firefox 5. Ever since Firefox stops responding and often crashes.
Your new feature to pin pages in the taskbar is great and I currently have 10 pages pinned that I always want up. One of them is Google+.
While in Google+ I see Firefox hang constantly. I'm not sure if it's your problem or Google's. I hadn't come to you because I assumed it was Google's problem. But I was just on Quora and it happened there as well.
Please contact me so we can figure this out. I love Firefox and I rely on it on a daily basis to get things done at work and in life in general.
    Thanks

First, you can terminate a running Firefox process using the Task Manager.
    Ctrl+Shift+Esc to launch it
Usually by this time, Firefox is no longer listed on the Applications tab, but if it is, try terminating it there.
Click the Processes tab and look for both of these:
plugin-container.exe (used to run Flash and many other plugins)<br>
    firefox.exe
Click each and then click End Process.
After that, you can close the Task Manager and you should be able to start Firefox.
As for why that happens, you could check this article: [[Firefox hangs or is not responding - How to fix]] -- skip to the section awkwardly entitled "Firefox hangs when you quit it"
