A lot of questions

Background.
A while ago I asked for some advice about external drives. I currently have 4 WD 4TB attached to a sonnet eSATA card and 3 WD 2 TB attached to a sonnet FW card and was having some issues with access times when saving to them. I decided to order some OWC mercury enclosures, unfortunately I had to order them from the US and I think they're sending them on a raft, since they haven't yet arrived.
After yet another failure of one of the WD 4TB drives, I've now ordered 2 x WD 2TB green drives as a temporary solution which I intend putting in my remaining 2 internal bays.
I've had a few issues with my Mac Pro which I've largely ignored over the 3 years I've had it, and I'm tempted to throw in the towel and go for a new mac at the same time as I'm re-organising my external storage. However I thought I'd list the issues I have and see if anyone has any comments about them in addition to some questions I have relating to configuring the possible new mac.
_Current issues._
The first issue I had was from new, it had FW issues from day one and FW completely died after about a week. Apple did say they would take it in but rather than be without it I purchased a sonnet FW card.
About a year and a half ago the display failed to light up after a shut down and restart, several attempts later it did eventually restart properly. This has happened regularly since but a couple of shut downs and restarts always work.
When this happens I can hear the mac starting normally but I just have no display, on occasions the attempts to restart it will ramp up the fans to maximum and I have to shut down and pull the power cord to reset.
My graphics card is a Radeon X1900, but without really having enough knowledge to make such a statement I wonder if it isn't PCI related rather than just the graphics card.
For the avoidance of doubt this only happens with some shut downs and never happens with restarts.
I also have some doubts about my RAM, the info from profiler and activity monitor don't seem to match up.
_A new mac or not and what configuration._
First question is how long has it been since the mac pro line was updated.
Not sure what CPU's I have they're the first Quad cores (3 Ghz), I've usually bought my macs by going for the top model in the belief they'll serve my needs for longer and not that I particularly need the horsepower they give at the point of purchase. If I do this today it's a hefty price, so does someone have some sort of guide as to how my current CPU's compare with todays line up. My current CPU's are still more than acceptable for what I do.
My intention has been (when the raft arrives) to move all my data internally and max out the macs HDD bays, to backup everything via time machine to one eSATA enclosure, back up data with 3rd party software to a second enclosure and have a 3rd enclosure for temporary use, a spare so to speak. My intention was to use green drives in the enclosures because speed isn't an issue and they're used only occasionally. Speed isn't really an issue internally either, would greens be sufficient or are the blacks not only faster but more robust.
_Last question_ (for now)
I have a lot of failed drives lying about, I appreciate it's speculative but what proportion of those drives are likely to have failed because of their cheap enclosures and how many because of the drives themselves, in short what's the chance I can use some of them in my new mercury enclosures (once the raft arrives)

What about my current MP how would it compare to the current Mac pro line up.
I have the same basic machine as yours and have used Cinebench CPU Benchmark to compare with the latest Mac Pro but obviously yours may be faster or slower depending the precise components in your machine:
*My Machine:*
8C/8T @3.00GHz, Intel Xeon CPU X5365 - Score 6.24
*Reference Machine*
8C/16T @2.92 Ghz, Intel Xeon CPU X5570 - Score 10.33 (65% Improvement)
Obviously there is more to performance than raw CPU performance but having mod'ed mine pretty well now (256 GB SSD Boot drive, 4,.5 TB Raid0 data drive, ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics - see blog posts below) I'm finding much of the work I am doing (video work mainly) is processor bound. I've also been thinking about upgrading. You should maybe consider the same.
Your 1900XT for example: I had one of these BTO and hated the noise and lack of performance. I jumped to the 8800GT when it was made available for the early Mac Pro's and now have a 4870 which is fact and quiet. This is hundreds of pounds of graphics upgrades that I could have used on a new machine.
The mods I have made have significantly improved my machine as you can see in the results of my blog posts below. However the best solution for you is probably to upgrade to a new machine. But I would encourage you NOT to buy a new Mac Pro now as the current model is 18 months old and Apple must be launching their new models soon.
Implementing an SSD for the boot drive may actually be a good investment now whilst waiting for the new models to come out as it will significantly enhance your existing system and you can swap it into your new machine when it arrives so you wouldn't lose anything.
Good luck anyway
Alan

I just got a new iPad 2 and I have lot of questions. I was able to wirelessly link my iPad and iTunes on my PC. I was able to SYNC my email and calendar (new entries only no history), however I have not been able to SYNC Outlook contacts. Outlook has multiple contact lists. Only one has any data. I can't find a way to delete the others and I can't keep the one I want to use at the top of the list. Any ideas?
I have a question about email. I have several thousand emails in 10 or so days. How can I select multiple emails for deletion in stead of one at a time? How do I designate emails from a given sender as junk or block certain senders?
    Ron

the spcs page on this site state which video formats the ipad supports
I'd suggest converting your old videos to one of those formats
handbrake is a free program which does this for you
itunes used to be able to too when I right clicked incompatible media but don't see the option any more
or maybe it only show when one right click incompatible media and currently my lib don't have any
about the music then it's odd what formats are they?
if they are acc protected have you tried to remove the DRM this can be don using itunes as
apple don't use DRM for music any more

  • A lot of questions but few answers.  That is a fact.

A lot of questions and few answers.  That is a fact.  My question is about deregistering a kaputt PC, and synchronizing iPod and iPod with a replacement PC w/o losing content.  I had a Toshiba with tummy trouble sychronized with and iPod and an iPad.  I bought content on all three and added content from CDs I already had.  They synchronized fine.  I deleted iTunes on the troubled Toshiba and installed it on a new Gateway.  The Gateway has far less content on iTunes and threatens to delete content from the iPod or iPad if I synchronize.  All I want to do is get all the shtuff together again on at least the Gateway and the iPod, preferably the iPad also.  Also, how to deregister the kranky Toshiba given that iTunes is deleted on it.  Why am I appealing to someone out there with time on their hands.  Doesnt Apple employ people for that?  If not, its high time they did.

Apple does employ people to help with technical problems. They're called Apple Technical Support, available by phone (use the Contact Us link at the lower-right of any Apple web page), and Geniuses, available at any Apple Store.
As to your questions, I'm not completely clear on where you have what content, but if it's all on your iPod or iPad, then you can transfer the content back into iTunes (a subject which, by the way, has been covered here many times already). For content purchased from the iTunes Store, see this support article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
For content not purchased from the iTunes Store, check out this post from Zevoneer for some iPod/iPhone media recovery options:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10570955#10570955
As to your question about "deregistering", I presume you're referring to authorization to the iTunes Store. It would have been best to have deauthorized the Toshiba before you uninstalled iTunes. You cannot yourself deauthorize a computer that's not working or to which you no longer have access. You can authorize a total of up to five systems, so it's probably not really important that you deauthorize your dead unit now. Once you reach five total authorizations, a button will appear in your iTunes Store account that will allow you to deauthorize all your systems, so that would at that time recover the now-useless authorization.

I'm going to assume that since you deleted your hard drive and all its files, you had a backup, yes? If the backup has an OS (bootable clone), then you can boot into it by holding down the option key when you start up you iMac and choose the backup drive. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to copy the files back to your iMac.

  • DVR 620 - A lot of questions on its features

    Hey all,
I tried searching some answers online but unfortunately haven't succeed.
I am trying to purchase the DVR 620 - DVD/VCR combo to replace another dvd player I have (which will be used for another tv since I can't record from that tv now >__<).
However, I have a lot of questions I have in mind before purchasing the DVR620.  My main concern right now is the "no tuner" issue.
    1. What is an external tuner?  I don't even know if I need to buy one to record my tv shows..  I usually record tv shows directly to my VCR player.  Now that this system is "tunerless," will I need to buy one?
I have DISH network and I am recording inside my bedroom.  The main receiver (I don't know if that is the "cable box" that is referred to) is in the living room connected to another tv.  There is no receiver box connected to the bedroom tv.  I don't know if that has any significance or relevance in whether or not I will need an external tuner.
Essentially, will I be able to record tv programs to VCR and DVD if there is no DISH receiver located inside my bedroom
    2. My second question is, I read in other posts, L2, L3 is sited frequently in connection to dubbing VCR to DVD or vice versa.  What is L2, L3?  Is it in the DVR620 or part of the tv system??
    3. I read that the DVR 620 can record directly from tv to DVD.  Is it the same process like the traditional VCRs, e.x. one click of the record+player buttons and it will record to DVD.
I am afraid I cannot record using DVR620 because of the tuner issue and thus I want to clarify it before making a purchase.  The VCR to DVD conversion feature is great but I don't want to purchase a player if I can't record television shows to VCR and DVD with ease.

Surely you know what a coaxial cable is, and an RCA cable too. Those are not part of newer technology like say, an HDMI connector. Maybe you just don't know them by those names. I've attached a photo. The red and white connectors are RCA male plugs. Those are the kind that you need to use with the DVR620KU. The other is a coaxial cable and connector. This may very well be what you're using to connect between your Dish box and the bedroom VCR. A long coaxial cable is relatively cheap, but a long pair of RCA cables would be much pricier.
I believe that the adapter at this link might work to convert the coaxial RF signal to RCA audio/video:
    http://www.amazon.com/RCA-Compact-RF-Modulator-CRF907R/dp/B0014KKV7W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=14151485...
But I am not 100% certain of this. But if it works, and you have a long coaxial cable, you'd connect the cable to the RF modulator and then connect RCA cables from it to the DVR620KU.

  • Lots of Questions about the Creative MuVo Slim 256MB MP3 Pla

<SPAN>Hello, I'm thinking of buying it...but I got lots of questions that i want it answered first before I buy it.
    <SPAN>
<SPAN>. How long does the battery last? Like would I even need to replace the rechargeable li-ion battery every year? month? never?
<SPAN>2. I know I can only charge the battery via <SPAN>USB<SPAN> cable, so a<SPAN>pproximately how long is the wait time until it has fully recharged?<SPAN>
<SPAN>3. Is it possible to recharge using an adapter instead of the <SPAN>USB<SPAN>? Because I found it easily.<SPAN>
<SPAN>4. Do you think this is worth buying? Or should I wait on a future release? <SPAN>
<SPAN>5. Is the voice recording clear? And can you record 5-0 feet away?<SPAN>
    <SPAN>
<SPAN>Thank you very much for your time in answering my questions.

. Lithium Ion batteries last at peak performance for about 3 years, or 300-500 charges, whatever comes first. They will still work after this for several years, but at reducing performance.
    2. Sorry, not sure...
    3. Again, not sure. You're taking a risk that the adapter is compatible.
    4. Only you can make that decision. Just look at this and the other players and compare the features and price.
    5. The in-built microphones are not great quality, and really only good for recording interviews and meetings, that type of thing.

  • Lots of questions and no answers?

    Hi All,
I've posted the message about NAT through a 3000 series VPN concentrator. i got a quite helpful answer from someone. BUT, it appears that this forum has quite a lot of questions and no answers.
Do Cisco people answer questions? who knows the offical support line that i presume (mutter mutter) costs per incident or something similar?
    thanks

  • A rather long post of me talking gibberish and asking LOTS of questions.

    ================================================== ================================================== ===
Before reading this MASSIVE post, please read the bottom at the stupid amount of P.P.S.'s as they probably have a lot of information that I forgot to put in the middle or something.
    ================================================== ================================================== ===
Hi, I'm some guy on the internet and I am 15 years old. For the sake of this post and the answers I hope to have, please ignore my age and understand my maturity and I hope that you can understand why I would like to learn this language so much. I seem to have major issues with learning this language and online tutorials and stacks of books do not seem to do the trick. Please do not reply saying "this is not for you, try something else" because although I do not know much in Java in terms of making good applications, I have learned quite a few things and I am able to make simple things with the console such as making a calculator where the user has to type in what operator they want to use and then they are asked to enter two numbers in which they are timed/added/divided etc. together and it gives the answer. Considering this I really want to continue learning this language because I find it fun to learn and fun to program in, yet I am having serious stress issues because I can't understand simple things and I just forget some of them and I then find it difficult to make simple applications. For example, I am trying to make a simple snake game where you have to find all the apples and eat them and then your body grows larger etc. but I just can't think of how I would do it. I know a few simple application type things and maybe how to put them to use, but I just don't know how to use them in this situation and how to start off making games like these.
Just to tell you a little bit about my background of programming, I have known about programming since I was about 11, I made a virus in Visual Basic believe it or not. It would disguise itself as Mozilla Firefox and would slowly delete random files that were opened or edited in the last month starting from the last used files in said month. It would delete a set amount of files every time you booted up and it was pretty nasty. It was obviously quite easy to get rid of it and it probably had many bugs, but it was a nasty virus nonetheless. Anyway, that lasted around 2 months and I never really picked up on programming until around 13 at which point I learned a bit of Java up until the System.out.println part, so not very far at all and I barely understood anything. Then I kinda picked it up at 14 last summer (2012) and learned almost as much I know now over the summer holidays and then kind of left it until after Christmas because I couldn't really get past a certain 'barrier' so I got bored and gave up. Until now. After Christmas I got back into it and starting learning a few more things, understood functions a little more and downloaded a bunch of source code from lots of different websites. I've now been extremely stressed out for the past 2 weeks going crazy because I can't fit anything else into my head because I just forget it or just don't understand it. So I am now in a complete frenzy not doing homework, being a douche to my friends and just not being very social or doing stupid things.
Unfortunately this is going to be a rather long post as you can probably already tell and there will be a 20 Q's kind of 'game' below where I ask things that I desperately need to know and maybe things that I want to know but don't necessarily need to know.
If you can, I would greatly appreciate it if you could answer all of the first 14 questions in one post instead of 1 or 2. Also, please do not post anything unnecessary or nasty as I am a new poster here and I just want to get started in Java and I have my own reasons for starting at such a young age and my intentions are rather personal. So please treat this matter with maturity and I hope someone can really help me.
I am sorry for any misspellings or grammatical errors, I am fully English, I am just rubbish at spelling.
    THE QUESTIONS!!!
    1) What is SUPER used for, when should I use it and why should I use it?
    2) When making a new class and you type PUBLIC [insert class name here](){} what does this do and why does it need to be the same name as the class it is in?
    3) Why do you need to make new classes inside already made classes sometimes?
    4) What is the use of NEW and why do you need to use it when you are creating something like a JFrame, where for example you would use it in your main function and have NEW [insert name of function with JFrame inside]();, why can't you just do [insert name of function with JFrame inside]();?
    5) What is actionPerformed, where is it used and why should I use it?
    6) When using a function, what is achieved when you call another class and make another variable inside said function? Eg, public [insert class name here]([insert other class name here][insert new variable name here]){}
    7) What 'type' is an ENUM? Is it an int? String? Double? So if I were to make ENUM [insert name of enum here] {A, B, C, D, E, F, G}; So what would happen if I were to say PUBLIC [insert name of enum here] B = 5; what would that mean? Would that assign it as an integer?
    8) When should I use enums, what is the point in them?
    9) What does [inset object here].ORDINAL mean? What is it used for and when should I use it?
    10) Although I understand that the RETURN statement is used to end a function and return it with a value if there is one specified, but when it returns it with that value that you may have specified, what happens to that value, how do I retrieve it and how do I use it? When will I know when to use RETURN?
    11) Briefly explain how to use KeyEvent, getKeyCode and just anything else to do with accepting user input and how I would use it.
    12) When using the KeyAdapter, why do you need to make a new class inside an already made class? What does this achieve? Why can you not extend it on the current class you are using instead of making a new class? This links back to the 3rd question.
    13) What is the difference between ++object and object++? Does it really matter which way I use them? Why should I use them differently and how will it affect my code if I use them differently?
    14) What's the difference between an IF statement and a BOOLEAN statement? They are both booleans and if used correctly can be used to do the exact same thing with just one or two lines of codes difference. Which one should I pick over the other and why? Which one is better to use for what kind of things?
    ================================================== ================================================== ===
POINTLESS QUESTIONS THAT I JUST FEEL LIKE ASKING THAT DON'T NEED TO BE ANSWERED AND DON'T HAVE MUCH TO DO WITH THE CODE ITSELF
    ================================================== ================================================== ===
    15) What is the best way to get into the mindset of 'a programmer'? What is the best way to understand the ways in which you would build an application and learning the step by step processes so you know what you have to do next and how to do it.
    16) I seem to always be worried that it takes programmers 5 minutes to program a very simple game, like Tetris because I've seen videos and just other places where it makes it look like it takes them a very small amount of time to make something that might take me months to learn. Is this how it works? Or can it take hours to program 5 classes for a very simple game? If so, why does it, if said programmer hypothetically understands the language well enough to make said program? Surely they would know what to do and how to make it so it would not take long at all?
    17) How often are IF and ELSE statements used in common programs? I feel when I am making a program I am always using them too much and I just stop programming from there because I feel that I am using too much of something so maybe it isn't the right way to do it or maybe there is a better way to do it.
    18) What would be the best way to learn programming for someone who finds it difficult to teach himself said topic yet has no efficient way to have someone teach him? I feel I am somewhat intelligent enough to learn a programming language, I have gotten this far, so I feel I should just keep going. Besides, despite the difficulties I have and the ridiculous amount of stress I get from not being able to learn on my own, I find it very entertaining to program things, read over other peoples code and slowly learn the world of programming. I feel that I see myself as a programmer in the future and I just really hope that I can learn this language quickly before I am too old to have time to learn this as a hobbie as I do now.
    19) I am someone who hopes to become a games developer as I thoroughly enjoy playing games as much as I do finding out how they work. What would be the right way about learning how to make games? Should I stick with Java or should I go to C++? I've only stuck with Java because I have more experience with it and I feel that I should learn an easy language and get used to OOP and other things before I go off making complex programs with a difficult language. I know how to print something to the console in C++ and that's about it.
    20) I have no way of having an education on programming in my school at the moment and all courses that have programming in them aren't very good - you make a simple application for coursework and you do a computer physics exam at the end of the year, not too helpful for me. Also, I don't have many friends that are diversed in any language of programming and the ones I do have, coincidentally, absolutely none of them are any good at making games or painting anything in graphics or anything to do with frames and windows. They're all about the console and making mods for games instead of making full on programs with a window and what not so it's difficult to get any of them to teach me anything. I've looked at college courses and none of them are for my age and what I am wanting, or they are just too damn expensive. I have also looked at online courses, one-to-one tutoring etc. but they are either way too expensive or they aren't very good in terms of being in a country half way across the world or maybe they have bad ratings. Anyway, what I'm trying to ask, despite all the negative put backs and all the issues that seem to follow me whenever I try to learn this damn language, what would be the best way to teach myself this language or any other language, or where are the best places to have someone teach me for free/cheap prices? I just essentially want to make something basic like a video game like Tetris or something so I at least have some knowledge of making a video game so I can maybe learn other things much easier.
P.S. I am in top sets for all my classes at school, so any intelligence issues aren't a part of this. I guess you could maybe call it laziness, but I just prefer to say that I am too used to people teaching me things and doing things for me rather than teaching and doing things myself. So if I were stuck on an island alone I really would not know what to do at all because I would mainly rely on other people.
P.P.S. Just for anyone's curiosity, I use Eclipse as my IDE on a Windows 7 Ultimate OS.
    P.P.P.S. I am British.
P.P.P.P.S. I have read through about 4 books about Java, but on most of them I just get really bored and stop reading them half way through because they either don't explain what I want to know or they really suck at explaining what I want to know.
P.P.P.P.S If you are going to post a good tutorial, please post one that I have most likely NOT been on. PLEASE. I have gone through MANY tutorials which all of them don't do me any favours. Please post one that you think that I might not have seen and actually tells me what EACH line of code does and WHY it does it and WHY I might use it and WHERE I might use it. Etc.
P.P.P.P.P.S If this is a TL;DR kind of post, then I am awfully sorry to have bored you, please go onto another post, but thank you very much for taking the time to actually LOOK and CLICK on my post. However if you do not have any intention of helping my dilemma, please leave as although I am asking for A LOT for FREE, I really don't need pointless posts that really do not solve my problem. Thanks.
P.P.P.P.P.P.S (Last P.P.S I swear! I just keep forgetting things.) If you have any questions to ask or I might not have asked something properly, feel free to ask as I will probably be refreshing this page non-stop for the next 2 weeks. Thanks ^^
For all the people out there who are THAT awesome to post here answers to these questions, I really salute to you and I would VERY gladly give you money for your time and effort, if I had the funds to give you what it's worth. ;-)

Before reading this MASSIVE postI didn't read it. I went straight to the questions. The rest of it was a complete waste of your time. Nobody cares whether you are 15, are stressed, get bored, etc. You should spend more time learning and less time emoting, and typing.
I am rubbish at spelling. So fix that. If you stay in this business you will have to spell properly or get nowhere. Compilers won't accept mis-spellings: why should anybody else? Get over it. In a few years you will have to write a resume. If I get it and it is misspelt it goes in the bin.
    1) What is SUPER used for, when should I use it and why should I use it?It is used for two purposes that are described in the Java Language Specification. If you can't read language specifications you will have to learn, or get nowhere. You can't learn languages in forums.
    2) When making a new class and you type PUBLIC [insert class name here](){} what does this do and why does it need to be the same name as the class it is in?That's two questions. 'public' is used for a purpose that is described in [etc as above]. The class name needs to agree with the file name because that is a rule of Java. Period. There's a reason for the rule but you should be able to discover it for yourself eventually, and it doesn't actually matter what the reason is at this stage in your development.
    3) Why do you need to make new classes inside already made classes sometimes? Why not?
    4) What is the use of NEW and why do you need to use it when you are creating something like a JFrame, where for example you would use it in your main function and have NEW [insert name of function with JFrame inside]();, why can't you just do [insert name of function with JFrame inside]();?Meaningless. You have to use the language the way it was designed. Same applies to most if not all your questions.
    5) What is actionPerformed, where is it used and why should I use it?See the Javadoc.
    6) When using a function, what is achieved when you call another class and make another variable inside said function? Eg, public [insert class name here]([insert other class name here][insert new variable name here]){}I cannot make head or tail of this question. You could try making it intelligible.
    7) What 'type' is an ENUM?It is of type Enum.
Is it an int? String? Double? No, no, and no.
So if I were to make ENUM [insert name of enum here] {A, B, C, D, E, F, G}; So what would happen if I were to say PUBLIC [insert name of enum here] B = 5; what would that mean? Would that assign it as an integer?I'm getting sick of this [insert name here] business. Try making your questions legible and intelligible. And again, an enum is not an int.
    8) When should I use enums, what is the point in them? When you want them. Not a real question.
    9) What does [inset object here].ORDINAL mean?Nothing. There is no such construct in Java. There might be an occasional class with a public variable named ORDINAL, in which case it means whatever the guy who wrote it meant. If you're lucky he documented it. If not, not.
    10) Although I understand that the RETURN statement is used to end a function and return it with a value if there is one specified, but when it returns it with that value that you may have specified, what happens to that value, how do I retrieve it and how do I use it?You store it in a variable, or pass it to another function, or use it as a value in a statement, for sample as an if or while condition.
When will I know when to use RETURN?Err, when you want to return a value?
    11) Briefly explain how to use KeyEvent, getKeyCode and just anything else to do with accepting user input and how I would use it. In a forum? You're kidding. Read the Javadoc. That's what I did.
    12) When using the KeyAdapter, why do you need to make a new class inside an already made class? You don't.
    13) What is the difference between ++object and object++?This is all described in the Java Language Specification [etc as above] and indeed most of this stuff is also in the Java Tutorial as well. Read them.
Does it really matter which way I use them?Of course, otherwise they wouldn't both exist. Language designers are not morons.
Why should I use them differently and how will it affect my code if I use them differently? That's just the same question all over again.
    14) What's the difference between an IF statement and a BOOLEAN statement? The difference is that there is no such thing as a boolean statement.
    POINTLESS QUESTIONSThanks for stating that.
THAT I JUST FEEL LIKE ASKINGBad luck. I don't feel like answering pointless questions. Ever.

  • I'm sorry, you probably get a lot of questions similar to this, but how do I use my 09 27" iMac as an external 1440p monitor for a PC in TDM?

    Hello all,
Firstly, let me apologise. You probably see a lot of these questions. However, I've had a look through and I haven't been able to find a solution to my problem.
I have an '09 27" iMac which I use for the creative side of my life. (I'm training to be an architect.) However I'm also really into gaming, and so I've just bought a brand new PC. The GPU is a GeForce GTX 780 Ti with two DVI, an HDMI and a DisplayPort output. My iMac has a Mini DisplayPort jack.
I'm basically wondering if there's any way of using the iMac as a 1440p monitor for this new PC. I tried connecting the PC to the iMac with an HDMI cable using an HDMI to MDP adapter and hitting cmd+f2 on the iMac to initiate Target Display Mode, but that hasn't worked. I'm now thinking of buying an HDMI to MDP direct cable to see if that works but I'm also wondering if a DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable might work too? I was under the impression that the 780 Ti had a MDP output but the version of mine only has the outputs listed above.
Is any of this even possible? I've heard reports in the past of people having success with MDP to MDP from PC to iMac but of course I can't do that. Am I wasting my time and money here?
At present I'm using my 37" HDTV as a monitor on my desk but as you can imagine, it's far too big to use in the long run! It's annoying because the 780 Ti is capable of running max settings easiliy in 1440p and having to downgrade from the iMac to a 1080p HDTV is disheartening.
Any help would be very greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance,
    Westy

I know this is old - but did you ever get this working. Thinking of getting a 780 ti card and I have an older mac with the mini-displayport too.

  • A lot of questions about my MacBook Air

I am really new to re-using Apple computers. The last time I used an Apple computer was back in 1987 when the school and my family had Apple IIGS computers. I have been using PC's which reqiure Microsoft. I a lot of have questions (10 questions) about my MacBook Air and I hope you good people can and will help me.
    Product: MacBook Air
Operating System: Mac OS X Version 10.7.4
    1) I Downloaded MacKeeper because I was fooled. I had a bad feeling just before I Downloaded it and I should have listened to my heart. However, I didn't buy it or fully Install it. It was like a test run and then they wanted me to pay almost $100 for it. Thankfully, I didn't because I read it is Malware. I spoke with an Apple Tech at Apple Care and he helped me get rid of it (or so we think). I don't see it anymore on my computer. I read it can slow down your computer. How can you tell if it's really off of the computer?
    2) When I open "Finder" and I see that there are people Sharing my computer with me. I went into AirDrop and it reads, "Other people can see your Mac as (my name) MacBook Air when their computer is nearby." I bought a HotSpot and while it's turned on and I selected it as my WI-FI connection I thought it would  get rid of these people, protect what I type, me, my items, computer, etc. But it didn't.
I didn't know that I have to buy a exteral CD and/or DVD Player in order to connect to the brand new Modem and Router in one by NetGear. I am so used to PCs and the CD/DVD Players being built inside.
The people at Apple Store told me that there is an internal modem inside, but I don't know how to find it and what to do then.  Should I use a Firewall?, An AntiVirus, AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, etc. Apple Care tech told me I don't need to get an AntiVirus.
    3) Is there a new kind of Wireless Modem and Router that doesn't require a CD-ROM?
    4) When I travel or fly and I am not close to home I was told by Best Buy and Sprint that I had to buy a mobile HotSpot to use the computer (WI-FI) safely. As I typed, I have one. But it's pretty expensive and only gives me 1 hour and 15 minutes per day to Stream. What can I do to use this computer safely Online when I am out of range from a Modem and Router? What do people do when they travel on airplanes?
    5) This compter won't let me use "Raid." I think you have to have a newer version. I hard about Raid on the radio from Leo (can't recall his last name) who's a Tech expert.
    6) Should I buy a ZipDrive? Apple Store Tech told me that I didn't need a ZipDrive. I just remember the episode of HBO's "Sex and The City" when Carrie looses everything because her copy crashed. Now, of course, I know that's a fictional show, but with PC's and Microsoft I have lost everything when it crashed, frooze up, etc. I know there's iClouds. I heard about Carbonite, but I have read the Pros and Cons about it. Mostly they are Cons about it. I just don't want to do anything wrong and mess up this computer.
    7) Should I buy a new Printer/Copier/Scanner because mine is an HP. It's not new, but it works. I even have a CD-ROM for Macs. What about the new product called, "Neat"?
    8) Is there a special product that I should buy to do Online Banking and/or other important stuff?
    9) I saw and read about iWork in the Apps Store and it sounds cool. I still have alot of friends and colleagues who still use Microsoft. Is iWork good to use? Should I Download it from the Apple Apps Store or can a buy it at Apple? Is there another Word Processing Program that is great and user friendly and will work with Macs and PCs?
    10) Should I Update the OS with OS X Mountian Lion Pro from the Apple Apps Store or buy it at Apple Store?
In advance, I wish to thank you in this Apple Support Communites for your help.  Have a safe and happy holiday weekend!

    1) Here are instructions for removing MacKeeper. Since it mostly consists of manually looking for folders and specific files, if you follow the instructions you either fail to find what you are told to find (because your AppleCare guide gave you complete instructions which you followed) or you'll find some additional files that need to be replaced.
2 & 3) I assume you are looking at the sidebar of a Finder window and seeing Shared and computers under it. Those are computers that you can potentionally share. To do so you'd need an account on their computer and a password. They are not sharing your computer.
AirDrop allows you to create an adhoc network for filesharing and it only functions when you have selected the AirDop item in the SideBar. Actually doing that merely announces to computers in the same network node that your computer is available for a file to be sent to. Even then you have to explicitly allow the file to be downloaded to your computer. Similarly you'd be able to see other computers with AirDrop selected and be able to send them a file - which they'd have to accept.
The only reason your NetGear Router comes with a CD is to install and run their 'easy' step by step configuration program. It can also be done manually with a browser. Read the manual to find the IP address you must enter to access the router's configuration menu. Apple's WiFi routers don't require a CD to install the software because the configuration software is already on your computer.
I do have my firewall turned on. AntiVirus software isn't a bad idea - I use Sophos having tested it for a review for our local User Group and I found I liked it better than ClamAVx which is what I'd been using before. Both are free.
    4) I think you were scammed by Sprint and BestBuy. I use hotel, coffee shop, and restaurant WiFi spots and have for years. However, because they can be unsecured, I do not shop online or bank when I'm using them. I also use 1Password and don't reuse passwords so even if a sniffer should grab an account and password that's all it would get - one account.
    5) Raid doesn't really make sense with a MacBook Air - a RAID involves 2 or more disks being used as if they were one.
    6) Zip drive? No. External hard drive - yes. It isn't a question of if a computer's hard drive will malfunction, it is when. OWC has a nice selection of external drives and the Mac has a built in backup system called TimeMachine. Due to the way TimeMachine works, I've found that your TimeMachine drive should be at least twice as large - and preferably 3-4 times as large as the data you are backing up.
    7) if your printer works and it has Mountain Lion drivers, why replace it?
    8) Online banking is done with a browser - Use Safari or FireFox
    9) If trading files with Windows users is important Mac: Office is your best bet. If not, iWork, Mac:Office, or LibreOffice are all good possibilities.
    10) you can only buy Mt Lion via the App Store.

1.what is mps Revision? what would i set this at?
2.What is the cpu clock spd? what would i set this at?
3.What is cpu Voltage Adjust? what would i set this at?
4.when setting up my primary IDE master+Slave, how do i figure out the type, number of cylinders, number of heads? write precompretion, number of sectors
thanks a lot, you guys are awesome!!!!!!!!

2.) Keep this to SPD if you are not intending to o/c aka overclock.
3.) Keep it to defaults, increasing it would not do much good unless you've stability problems or intending to o/c, then raise it by +/-0.05v will be more than enough.
4.) To be specify, to Master or Slave a HDD depends on which HDD you want it to be the 1st priority boot up drive which is most suitable to be Master when placed along the same IDE cable. The end of the IDE cable is for Master HDD as it is considered independent where the center IDE connecter is the slave connector.
Remember not to set 2 master drives on 1 single IDE controller as it'll cause conflict. If you have problems for them to detect Master/Slave, you can configure them as cable select to let the system do the detection and assigning. Bear in mind that not all mobo can do cable select well.

  • A Lot of Question: PLEASE REPLY TO THIS THREAD

Hi, I am a 16 year old teen that is about to wait for the right moment to have my dream of starting a youtube channel. Ive done a lot of research comparing how any type of laptop will compare when I record and play my games, because i mostly want to get into gaming youtube channel. Although i might want to do just gaming ive also wanted to do videos of unboxing and music covers. My friend that knows a lot about computers told me that i should get a mac if i want to do mainly editing, or if i want to just game and record i should buy a pc laptop. He recommended that i should buy a laptop from IBUYPOWER that has better specs than that of the mac book pro retina 15" and is cheaper. That moves onto my next question asking why are macs so overpriced? I did all my research on that too, and it most likely seems it is almost a brand name expense like louis vuotton. Next question is, how is the cheapest way I can get the 15" retina mac book pro for the cheapest price possible, should i wait until black friday for sales to lower, or should i wait until the next year to get the next 2015 model. Is the newer progressing years of MacBook pros that much better that i should wait until the next year to get it. Next question, say i wanted to play a game that is only on windows platform, ex. Skyrim. Should i play a cracked version that has been reformatted to the mac, or should i just download windows on my mac so that i can play it with more ease of use that way, instead of having to use everything in the mac side when it was originally formatted for Windows. Anyway thank you for your time, and even if you dont know the answer to these questions, PLEASE ANSWER ANYWAY, THANK YOU!
MacBook Pro with Retina display, PLEASE REPLY TO THIS THREAD

There is no such thing as overpriced. Apple is the most profitable company in the world. It sells all of the Macs it makes - every single one. Not everyone can afford a Mac, but such is life.
I did all my research on that too, and it most likely seems it is almost a brand name expense like louis vuotton.
That is incorrect. According to Forbes, Apple is the #1 most valuable brand, while Louis Vuitton is #10.
Next question is, how is the cheapest way I can get the 15" retina mac book pro for the cheapest price possible, should i wait until black friday for sales to lower, or should i wait until the next year to get the next 2015 model.
Machines may get more powerful every year, but they never get cheaper. You may be able to save more money the longer you wait. If you can't afford a 15" retina, consider a refurbished unit (buy directly from Apple only - see babowa's link), a 13" model, or an Air.
Is the newer progressing years of MacBook pros that much better that i should wait until the next year to get it.
They get better every year. If you wait forever, then the machine you never buy will be infinitely powerful.
There is no such think as a "cracked version that has been reformatted to the Mac". If you want to run Windows software, buy a PC and run Windows. Most people do. You may be able to play that game on a Mac using Bootcamp, but it isn't guaranteed.

  • Lots of questions before buying a macbook pro..help please!!

So I am about to buy a macbook pro in the next couple of days with these specifications:
    MacBook Pro, 15-inch
    Part Number: Z0EZ
    Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
    Accessory Kit
    2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
    MacBook Pro 15-inch Widescreen Display
    200GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
    2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    SuperDrive 8X (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
After I get the computer I am going to upgrade to 4 GB myself (cheaper). This computer will primarily be used for video editing (I'm off to film school). Here come the questions!!
    1. This is probably a really stupid question, but the 15 inch macbook pro has an isight right?
    2. I am in need of an external hard drive (or two). I was thinking of getting 1 TB primarily for my video projects, and then another 250 GB hard drive for time machine. Are two external hard drives going to be too much for the computer to handle? What hard drive(s) do you recommend? Right now I am thinking a G-Tech 1.0TB Quad-interface hard drive and a 250 GB G-Tech hard drive (for time machine). Which leads to my next question.
    3. I would love to use eSATA with my TB hard drive...but there aren't eSATA ports included on the macbook pro (I think). So i researched and found the 2-Port NitroAV eSATA II 3Gb/s Professional Express Card (34mm). This would work with the computer right? Is eSATA necessary or should I just stick with firewire? I'm attracted to it because I will be editing video with the computer and I would love the increased speeds but I'm afraid it will overwhelm the computer.
Okay I think that's it! Any input will be greatly appreciated! Thanks

    1-yes
2-look at macsales.com, click on harddrives then all things fire wire. they have a lot of different drives ranging all the way up to a 2 tb setup (its 2 separate stripped raid set ups that are then mirrored against each other). they also sell some esata dives, not sure what size they go to but they hae them
fire wire 400 has some crazy top limit of drives you can chain together of like 40some odd so 2 will be fine, i have 2 running right now and no issues. i would suggest if you get the drives form OWC (macsales) you use the softraid program that comes with it.
3- you can get a pci card for the card slot which macsales also sells if you go though them so you dont have to go more than one place

  • LOTS Of Questions... (Migrating To OS X)

Strictly speaking, this may not be the appropriate forum for these questions, but I'm inclined to think the 'old timers' here might have a better handle on many of them than recent 'switchers'.
I will be upgrading my PB Ti G4 to 10.4.3 soon, haven't spent a whole lot of time on OS X and am looking for advice to ease my transition. I want to maintain dual boot and full Classic capability for the time being.
I will likely be partitioning the drive for other reasons... I'm wondering if there's any advantage to having OS 9 and X systems on separate partitions? Will X 'see' 9 (and run it as Classic) if I do so?
There are a number of apps and utilities I've come to rely on in 9 (and below) that I'd like to replicate (as possible) on X. Among them...
ResEdit - Is there any comparable tool for making minor changes to existing apps in X?
KeyQuencer - An extremely useful keyboard / macro program, not supported on X... is there any suitable replacement (preferably one that dovetails nicely with AppleScript)?
The Apple Menu - Is 'Fruit Menu' a safe and worthwhile substitute?
I hate the Dock... can someone recommend a usable alternative? One that stays hidden til you want it?
I'm used to pre-X maintenance techniques and don't know a lot about X maintenance. Is there a reliable 'all in one' tool for handling similar tasks on X?
Finally, even on 9, I use a minimalist appearance scheme, mainly black and white. Are third-party appearance 'skins' in X safe to use?
I'm aware this is a lot to ask in one post and that I could find (some) answers searching the web, but I would greatly appreciate comments from folks who've 'been there'... even if your experience is only with one of the items mentioned.
    Thanks Very Much.

"My other computer is a Kanga."

    None,
I will not address the apps and utilities question but can offer a few suggestions regarding 9.x, etc.
Partitioning the HD will work just fine and I always do so on my 'books, dual-boot or not. I will describe my configuration as an example.
    - One partition has both 9.x and 10.x; the 9.x System Folder on this partition is "optimized" to run as Classic...all unnecessary extensions/control panels are disabled plus only those apps that will run in Classic are present.
    - Another partition has a full boat install of 9.x plus all utilities and applications, just as if you were not running 10.x.
When booted to 10.x, you can select either 9.x System Folder to run as Classic -or- either 9.x to boot; you can also choose to install 9.x on just one partition...makes no difference which. You don't actually have to run the 9.x installer on both partitions; if you wish to install a full 9.x + apps on a separate partition, you can then just drag-copy the System Folder to the 10.x partition, either before or after 10.x is installed...this is what makes 9.x so easy to copy/install.
When partitioning, make sure you install the MacOS 9 HD Driver on all partitions first; it is necessary to boot 9.x but not necessary to run Classic under 10.x. You can either use Drive Setup on the 9.x CD to set up the HD or Disk Utility in 10.x; just select MacOS Extended Format (or HFS Extended Format), install the 9.x HD driver, then install the software.
If no one replies regarding the software, head over to Tiger Discussions.
