A Mac Pro Help Challenge. I've never seen this before!
I am having a problem with a Mac Pro 2x3 GHz Quad-Core with 16 GB RAM 750 GB HD with an NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500.
The machine has had several problems. Including Illustrator loosing quick keys such as the ability for it to recognize when the SHIFT Key is pressed? Or the ability to quickly change from tool to tool.
It freezes from time to time.
When I shut it down, let the computer power cycle then start it up, I will see the small light on the 23" apple display blink 3 times rapidly then pause then repeat. I can only get the computer back up by pressing the power button for several seconds.
I've come back to the computer to see the RSS Visualizer screen saver blinking. It was strange.

That's a link to a kind of warping effect I get when opening or saving or utilizing any dialog window. I've never seen it occur before.
Can you guys/gals offer any help?
I can't go to apple support. It's my work computer and the IT people here are not Mac Geniuses. I am trying to get some ideas so that I could throw their way.
16 GB of RAM sounds great, but who ordered it? IT will usually buy the cheapest memory they can get. Try pulling any non-Apple memory and see if the problems go away. I hear the Mac Pro is pretty sensitive when it comes to memory.

What does the ~ symbol mean next to an event? I have never seen this before but today when I edited a few events this appeared next to the event.

Hm. I've never seen that in iCal. In some other Applications the tilde "~" indicates a restore point or a before / after for a file. My guess is there is a broken cache file in iCal.
Try:
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Language & Text > Formats > Region. Region should be set to the country of your choice. Do not have it set to "Custom" as this can have unexpected results in the iCal window.
If that doesn't resolve the issue:
1. First make an iCal backup: Click on each calendar on the left hand side of iCal one at a time highlighting it's name and then going to File Export > Export and saving the resulting calendar file to a logical location for safekeeping.
2. Go to iCal > Quit iCal
3. Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.ical
Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache if present)
--- NOTE: To get to "Home > Library" in Lion: Click anywhere on the desktop and then click on the "Go" menu at the top of the computer screen while holding down the "option" key on the keyboard. You will see "Library" in the menu.
4. Launch iCal and test.
If the issue persists:
1. Go to iCal > Quit iCal
2. Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.ical
Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache if present)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove them all.)
--- NOTE: Removing these files may remove any shared (CalDAV) calendars you may have access to. You will have to re-add those calendars to iCal > Preferences > Accounts.
3. Launch iCal and test.

I have never seen this before when I try to copy and paste, I get a

I have copied and pasted hundreds of times before with Mozilla and firefox . This just happened suddenly.
when I go to find more information on this issue, it give a long drawn out explanation I cant follow.
What happened?When you right-click the link, the page immediately tells you you can't copy, or does that occur after you choose Copy Link Location?
If it appears immediately, you can switch a setting in Firefox that should prevent sites from blocking the normal right-click menu. Here's how you would do that:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''context''' and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the '''dom.event.contextmenu.enabled''' preference to switch it from true to false.
This setting does have a complication: On Google Maps and other sites that have their own right-click menu, Firefox's menu then will block the site's menu. To clear Firefox's menu so you can access the site's menu tap either the Alt key or Esc key once (but sometimes Esc removes both). -
Is anyone else having the finish rub off of the keys on their macbook? I've had mine for about 6 months and several keys look like the finish is wearing through. I went to the local genius bar today and the techs said they'd never seen this before.
Some people have seen their aluminum uni-body discoloring due to body oils. Go figure.
Normally putting anything over the keys/aluminum will hurt heat disspation, but you may need to use keyboard covers.
Or save up $500/year for new keyboards.
Neither is supposed to be a sarcastic answer. Either one could end up being the solution.

I have just restored my iPad. When I try to set it up, it tells me that my configuration can not be downloaded. Never seen this before. Any ideas?

I would be concerned too if I was not able to gain access to my iPad. If you are unsure what your Apple ID is, you can find the steps in this article:

I've never seen this request before. I rarely shut down my computer, and when I restarted it this morning, the above is what I got in a small box. I've tried to find "Completer" in help and communities but there is nothing. I don't want to put in my password until I know it is valid. I found on "google search" about Genieno which led me to a link in the Apple Communities. There is nothing in my apps or computer with that name. Anybody know what this is? Thanks.
There should be nothing native to the OS X which would ask for a password
or other information on a restart, unless accompanied by the traditional login
box with your user name.
There are adware or marginal products that could be called malware (bad)
that would impose their presence and some items that could have been
downloaded by accident or through some corrupted free software site; of
those some could ask for and gain permission to go through your Mac
and maybe even run in the background to do other nefarious misdeeds.
You could see if startup in SafeBoot allows you access past that the Completer.
Since I don't have a pile of helpful article links on how to resolve various issues
I'd be looking them up one way or another.

Well, first off. I love my MPB, Love it to bits...but... recently I learned of the Nvidia problem and at first I was paranoid, but then I said I'll be ok for now... but... then this happened.

Now at first I thought it was just my applications, but eventually I found out it still does it even in just the finder. It seems to me like the display is trying to turn off but something is waking it, but almost instantaneously its getting the command to turn off again, Thats just my idea, any help on this would be greatly appreciatedOk, I know its been a long time since this was posted but In that time I've managed to get even more information. I enabled the debug report and background crashes notification from the developers tools. Now every time my laptop screen goes black I find an error report saying screensaver has crashed, so from this I've eliminated faulty wiring etc, it seems the controller for the screen going black is the screensaver engine. I found this odd and went into system preferences to see if something happened when i went to the screen saver tab, and low and behold it did, every time i switched from the desktop tab to the screen saver tab system preferences crashed also just shortly before it crashed I noticed that none of my screen savers were listed yet the error report said that I was running the abersque screen saver. So i went to the library>screen savers folder and their were no screen savers stored there, not even my old custom ones. So i went to my user folder and checked the screensaver folder there, and they were gone too. Now I know many people would suggest a re-install of mac OS X but this problem actually started before I did a re-install and it's still continuing at the moment so i went to check my time machine back up of my old system and checked the screensaver files there and they were missing also... in EVERY save that time machine had made, can anyone help me with this, it's really maddening

my iPod's battery died so I put it in my pocket, when I took it out, the screen was on and its a white screen with a black border on top that says "Accessorize Test" .. then it says on the screen

If you are still unable to reset your iPod, use only one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Menu button.
When you reset iPod all your music and files are saved, but some customized settings may be lost. Date and time is preserved (unless the iPod reset itself because it had no power and then was reconnected to power). Other customized settings, such as Bookmarks, On-The-Go Playlists, Shuffle, Backlight timer, and so forth are preserved from the last time the hard drive turned on. -
GIF comes out strangely pixelated with noise, never seen this before!
Everytime I export my animated GIF in flash it comes out in this weird pixelated way. Instead of everything being normally pixelated where they are just not as sharp, they come out with what looks like noise speckles all over them. The kind of noise that is not monochromatic. I have no Idea what this is or how to fix it and I have a client waiting for his web banner. I thought at first it was because I was using imported PNG's to make the GIF, but then I tried just making it in flash and it is still happening. I have played with every publish setting offered and I cannot make it clear, please help me!
Why do you want to change it to a png for placement? Just place it as the original .ai eps file you got. You never want to use a jpg, png or gif in a document that's going to be printed. The minute you change it to a png or jpg you're going to lose resolution. That's why it's pixelated

I added my first folder of MP3s and it created a playlist, but didn't show up in the library. When adding a second folder, it didn't show up anywhere. I can do a search for them in the search window, and it finds/plays them, but I want to be able to browse them in my library. These are not MP3s downloaded from iTunes, but are personal files located on my hard drive. Can anyone help?
I have a Dell that's running Windows XP. I have found that itunes is very temperamental. this works most of the time... except on my son's computer that's running Windows Vista.
Go to your library in iTunes. Then go up to file and try one of the options (import, add folder to library, or add file to library).
Adding a folder is the least work. You can add all the files from a folder with one click... if it works. Remember that itunes is temperamental.
If that doesn't work, try adding a file. The problem with that is that you have to go through the whole process for each and every file (song, movie, etc).
Sometimes the only thing that works is to import.
I haven't gotten iTunes to work on my son's computer (Windows Vista).
I can't get support from apple in any way at all! They are good about creating electronics that appeal to us But they are lousy at support. If anyone figures out how to access support (where you can actually contact Apple) please let me know ([email protected]). I've been trying for 6 months. -

As the Other threads suggests I would check the Date and Time settings on the Mac and compare that with the settings in the router.
Messages (and iChat before that) send Time stamped info to Login and to send IMs.
Obviously most people set their Macs to their Time Zone and nearest city/town.
What people sometimes forget is that their Router/Modem device(s) have to be set correctly as well.

Also Add a Public DNS server to your System Preferences> Network > Advanced Button > DNS tab
A Google one such as 8.8.4.4 or 8.8.8.8 seem to work well for most people
