A MacBook Pro is a Better Deal Than A Windows XP Notebook!!!

Well I would just like to share the good news with all of you...
After going onto www.hpshopping.com , I have noticed that a similiar in power Windows XP Professional laptop with the same speciifications costs more than the all new MacBook Pro when the educational discount is used.
A WIndows XP Pro laptop costs about $1999 when powered up to the same specs as the MacBook Pro which costs only $1799, has a better scree, bigger resolution, bigger screen, better camera, better wirelss internet, bluetooth.
SO BUY A MACBOOK PRO TODAY IS YOU ARE A STUDENT! ITS THE BEST DEAL AROUND!
(I cant belive it but finally apple is cheaper than Microsoft!)

What is that old saying "there goes a man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing"
Not at aimed at you RobG1, but many others who are obsessed with this price comparison, including a heated debate going on at the MacWorld site.
Apples may or may not be more expensive than a Dell (why is it always Dell? Surely as better brand comparison would be with Sony or Toshiba).
I switched and use a Mac for a variety of reasons, none of which was price. Going into a business meeting and knowing it will work. Never having that embarrasing moment went the machine won't boot up, or won't work with the projector, or the application fails etc etc. Using Keynote or even Powerpoint for mac always looks better on screen than using Powerpoint on a PC. It very often prompts favourable comment.
My powerbook always seems to promote a discussion beyond work leading to a connection with a client that would normally take dinner.
Finally there is something about OSX that makes using a computer easier and more pleasurable. I can't explain it but is there.
Put a "price" on the above then a comparision can be made.
RobG1 I notice from your sig you use XP. If you needed equitable pricing, for whatever reason, to make your switch it is great you now have the ammunition. You should make the switch you will not regret it.
I do not hate Dells, they have done a great job in bringing cheap computers to market. I don't particularly hate Microsoft (I don't like their business practices, nor do I think they make "great" software). But to compare the two systems on the basis of price entirely misses the point.
regards
Nick

The firmware update corrects an error that may occur, however the techs would have checked the condition of the battery prior to installing a new one.  If the battery was questionable, the firmware update was really not too important.
You can check the battery condition by going to the apple, left side of the menu bar, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Power and see what it says about Cycle Count, Condition, Capacity: Condition anything but Normal needs to be checked and may need to be replaced.
The cycle count of 1,000 charge cycles is the typical life of a Lithium-Ion battery, the point at which the capacity drops to 80% of the as built capacity.

As Tom said the FCS forum is the better place to post the question.
Here is Apple's best practices doc for installing both on the same system.
BTW, FCP7 is part of the FCS 3 suite of apps.

I agree with teh OWC sggestion above, but why must it be USB powered? I find that far more unreliable, and the low power devices slow.
I'd frankly get a good external enclosure and buy a bare drive.  But the OWC stuff is quite good - vastly better than some of the majors (WD being aprime example of stuff that's boderline quality and often not compatible)

  • MacBook Pro crashes when closing lid while in windows 8.1

I use a late-2011 MacBook Pro with Mavericks for work and run Windows 8.1 as my daily driver via Boot Camp. I've been running this setup for about a month without incident, but within the past week whenever I close the laptop it starts acting really weird. Normally it has alway just gone into sleep mode with the white LED on the front of the base pulsing slowly, and when I open it back up (even after a day or two) it snaps right back to action.
When I got home from work one day about a week ago I noticed that the computer was completely turned off, and when I booted it back up it went to OSX (I have it set to boot into Windows by default). I didn't initially think anything of it, but I soon realized that every time I closed the lid it was crashing. After closer examination I saw that the white LED wasn't flashing after closing the lid and that I could hear the fans still running. Oddly enough everytime I open it immediately after seeing this occur, the LED starts blinking when the lid is open yet the screen is black, the computer is unresponsive, and yet the fans are still humming. Eventually the computer just turns itself off completely. I've tested the same sequence of events while in OSX, yet everything works as it should: the LED illuminates immediately after closing the lid and the computer is fully operational the moment I open the lid.
I haven't made any major changes or performed any sort of updates since setting everything up initially, so I'm completely baffled as to why this is occuring. I've tried to reinstall/repair the Boot Camp drivers while in Windows, but to no avail. I'm at a total loss... I defintely am hoping to avoid having to wipe my fully configured windows installation and starting from scratch. Has anyone experienced anything like this and hopefully have any suggestions? Thanks!

I would be looking at the Quad core MBP for Parallels. A Quad-core vs Dual-Core is not a fair comparison.
For the same CPU, the two bottlenecks for Parallels are RAM and disk speed.
You will see an improvement if you max out the RAM and the disk speed. The SSD in the MBP will be much faster than the HDD in the iMac.

lower your font size unless you have difficulty
    MS Security Essentials is excellent
Then again maybe time to investigate Windows 8 RP (which uses Defender)

If you don't have it for reference, the manual might come in handy > US/Boot_Camp_Install-Setup.pdf
After it loads, Command + F to find information regarding the drivers.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Install the Windows support software from the USB drive. Note that Boot Camp Assistant, in OS X 10.8.3, doesn't support the option to burn the Windows support software into a disc.
Instead, you can try a different thing. Start in Windows and download the Windows support software in it > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1638 Then, decompress the file and run the Boot Camp drivers installer.
If you can't access to the Internet in Windows, start in OS X and download the Windows support software from the same link. Decompress the file, right-click the folder which will show up after decompressing the file and select "Burn". Finally, start in Windows and install the Boot Camp drivers

I have the same problem. It is only with tv shows and only with programs I have downloaded after the software update.
Apple support sent me the above link too....but it doesn't solve the problem...my computer is authorized and the content is in my library and will play on my Mac air, but it will not sync the tv shows, it keeps saying my computer isn't authorized for it.
No answers here, but you are definitely not alone with this issue.

Yes it's MS Windows! You will need a license of MS Windows (preferable Windows 7) and from there you can decide on the strategy for running Windows on your iMac. You can use Boot Camp (you already have this) or you use virtualization software such as Parallels or Fusion. For your situation I'd recommend virtualization software. However for only one program I'd do some due diligence to see if there is a OS X version. You can start with the App store or simply use Google to search.
Kappy has provided a good article on running Windows on a Mac and the various options. Here is the link:

You can hook up an USB drive formatted as FAT32 or NTFS(read-only), but it can't read exFAT drives or boot Windows from an USB drive.

  • Is the Macbook Pro Retina display better than the LED display on the new iMac that is coming out?

I am thinking of either buying the Macbook Pro retina display (15") or waiting for the iMac 27" display. I am mainly focusing on the display, so what is better?

    vinay.sujan wrote:
Is the MacBook Pro Retina display resolution of 2880-by-1800 a strain on the eyes as I understand the higher the resolution the more strainful the screen can be to the eyes?
Well there are two or three causes of eyestrain with displays different people seem to have.
    1: Small type/UI elements
    2: Glossy screens
    3: Flicker rate
    1:
The higher pixel rate combined with the display set at the higher resolution is going to cause UI and type to be smaller and harder to see. In fact it's advised to set OS X to a lower resolouton so it upscales better to match the pixel of the higher display.
Reports coming in say watching HD 1920 x 1080 trailers on the anti-glare 17" is best as the pixel content matches the display almost fullscreen, where on the MBP-R it's upscaled and thus looks blurry.
HD content makers are NOT going to change all their video cameras to support 2880 x 1800 full screen, so in order to get a clearer image playing HD 1080 content, one will have to do so in a smaller window.
    2:
The new MBP-R dispalys are 75% less glossy, but not 100% less glossy like the anti-glare models so this can still cause some people problems. This can be lowered to under 1%, however I'm suspecting to do so would be considered giving up a military advantage to China where Apple gets it products made.
    3:
I don't know about the flicker rate if it's better or not on the MBP-R's than the previous screens.

  • Macbook Pro Bad battery better than none?

    Hello!!
I know this might sound crazy but on yesterday my Macbook Pro (early 2008) battery expanded while connected to my mac. I didnt notice this until I powered it on and couldnt use my track pad. I thought maybe the mac had been stepped on or something.     To make a long story short, I am a DJ and use my Macbook pro for that purpose. I have a gig coming real soon and I've read that the mac will only run at 1Ghz or so without the battery. I need my computer to run full speed as its needed for my DJ program. I cannot risk it lagging during a gig! I refuse to put the exploded battery in it and I'm sure Apple will do nothing about this outdated Mac. I ordered a non-working battery hoping to be able to use my Mac at full power until I can purchase a working battery. Will this work? I know your asking why order a bad battery? I couldnt order a working one and get it delivered by my gig date.
    Thank you!

I'm not sure why no battery would slow things down, but I've never tried it. Again, why not just see what it does with no battery?
If the OSX senses that there is no battery present, it will throttle the CPU.  This is to protect the Mac from those situations where electrical loads are such that the charger alone cannot handle them and the battery is used to supplement the charger.
    Ciao.

  • What preset MacBook pro would be better for video editing and eventually college?, What preset MacBook pro would be better for video editing and eventually college?

    Hi,
I am thinking about getting a MacBook Pro.  My current computer is very very old and can not be used.  I would like to use it for video editing and eventually to use when I go to college.  I want to get one of the preset 13 inch MBPs.  I do not know which one will be better for my purposes.  Could anyone please help me??

Any computer made today, Windows or Mac, will be MILES ahead of what you are now using.
Raw CPU speed is not the total benchmark of a computer. Look at it this way. A 2.6GHz CPU made today is much faster then a 2.6GHz CPU made just a few years ago, like 3 years ago. the difference between a 2.6 and a 2.9GHz CPU is 3 tens of 1 GHz, 300MHz. The percentage difference is about 8-9 percent (.08-.09). Back when CPUs were listed in MHz, 120, 300, 600, if you have a 300MHz CPU and you replaced it with one that was 300MHz faster that was a Big Jump. You doubled the computing power. Today 300MHz, .3GHz, is next to nothing. Especially for the price jump.
Note that when you make the switch you will either need to update your program, that means Re-Buying most of them, to work on the Mac OS or install a version of Windows in either a Boot Camp partition, Dual booting the Mac, or into a Virtual Machine software program to run the Windows version of those program.
If you decide on a Mac buy the BASE model that is offered for the CPU speed you want. The RAM and hard drive can be upgraded by you for much less then what Apple charges for those upgrades. With the hard drive if you upgrade it to a larger and faster drive, Apple supplies 5400RPM drives, like a 7200RPM drive you get to Keep the original drive to use in any way you like. Like an external drive.
