A Macbook/Time Machine/Time Capsule epic - still in progress. Please help!

I'll try and keep this to the point.
I decided to upgrade my Macbook's 160GB Hitachi hard drive to a 500GB Samsung model. I also have a 500GB Time Capsule that has has an ongoing Time Machine backup going back to June 13, 2008.
I figured that I would change out the HD, then use the 'restore' function in Time Machine to bring the system back to where I left it. I figured that's exactly why I purchased Time Capsule in the first place.
The drive installed and formatted (using 'zero fill' to check for drive errors) just fine, and the restore kicked off great. The estimation was for something like 28 hours (for 49GB of data) which was a bit alarming but apparently not unheard of.
A day later, I found it stuck at 71% or so, and checking the install log revealed that I was getting 'error -36' messages for several music and video tracks in iTunes. It literally got stuck for about 8 hours, taking about half an hour to realize that each song was going to be an 'error -36' before moving on to the next one, and so on.
It was clearly never going to finish, at least not this year.
I clicked on stop, clicked to confirm that I was sure...and then it hung. I tried quitting the installer, which also hung, so in the end I was forced to do a hard power down. When I rebooted using the Leopard DVD, I attempted another restore, thinking I'd choose another date from which to restore. This time, however, opening up the Time Capsule drive hung.
OK, Time Capsule's Time Machine backup file is now toast. End of story.
Here's my question: I figure my next step is to figure out whether the HD in Time Capsule is faulty or whether the backup file itself is corrupt. I'm now 'zero fill' erasing the TC's HD. Does this give you a surefire way to tell that the drive is in good condition? If it fails, I guess it's under warranty. If not, I'll start a new backup from scratch (I don't see what else there is to do at this stage, frankly) and try to restore that and see how that goes.
Does anyone know what an 'error -36' is, anyway? Can anyone tell me if I've missed something, or some reason why this may not have worked as well as it was supposed to? Or anything that I should do next that I may not have thought of?
Thanks so much,
Michael.

I will remember to try to repair the TC disk via Disk Utility next time - I didn't even know you could do that until now! Thanks for that. In that case, I agree that I wiped the drive, because it would have been a great opportunity to try out the repair function and see if it could have made it work.
Well, the good news is that I have succeeded with my original intention, which was to replace my internal HD with a larger one, using Time Machine/Time Capsule to bring everything back. It worked perfectly, and I now have a Macbook with a 500GB drive. Awesome! By the way, I can recommend the Samsung drive if anyone is thinking of making the switch. So far, excellent performance, near-silent operation, and loads of storage space - for now!
The solution to the problem became clear once I erased the TC's HD and wanted to start over. My idea was that I would make a complete Time Machine backup, then change out the drive, then restore.
After the erasure, I found that the backup would not start, and everything about the Mac was sluggish! I cycled the power on the Time Capsule, and everything was like new once again. I restarted the backup and without delay, it started backing up - and fast.
Once this completed, I did a restore, and the estimated time was 8 hours. Big improvement from 24! After just 80 mins, it had restored 25% of the system - and this is wirelessly (using 'N')! Clearly, everything had become jammed up and during my previous restore attempt, it pretty much ground to a halt.
So everything is great now. It is possible that I didn't even have file corruption after all, perhaps just a refusal by the system to go any further. I won't know now, but should it happen again, I will power cycle first as well as run repairs on the disk via Disk Utility. I suspect that this is all that was needed.
Thanks for the responses again, and hopefully this post may help someone in the future.

  • Time machine no longer backing up...please help!

I've scanned a lot of the posts already so I'm going to try to include as much information as I can:
*The last time TM performed a backup was on 3/15 of this year. (hmmm...now that I look at it...perhaps it was the Ides of March that botched it all?...i digress...) All of the sudden it was telling me that my backups were huge (can't remember specifically how big at the moment) and that it could not complete the back up.
*When I look in my backup volume (500GB WDMB) in the backups.backupdb folder under my computer, I see a file that is named 2009-03-15-145335.inprogress...no idea what that means but I thought I'd mention it.
*My HD shows 465GB capacity with 139GB available.
*To my knowledge, I do not run any programs like Parallels. (This was mentioned as a possible problem in other posts so I thought I'd include that info)
*I just downloaded the TM widget and attempted to do another backup, which also failed, the details of which I will post here:
    +Starting standard backup+
    +Backing up to: /Volumes/My Book/Backups.backupdb+
    +Starting pre-backup thinning: 18.07 GB requested (including padding), 4.32 GB available+
+No expired backups exist - deleting oldest backups to make room+
+Error: backup disk is full - all 0 possible backups were removed, but space is still needed.+
+Backup Failed: unable to free 18.07 GB needed space+
+Backup failed with error: Not enough available disk space on the target volume.+

Then either hold down the +Option +key while selecting the TM icon in your Menubar (or control-click/right-click the TM icon in your Dock) and take the +Browse Other Time Machine Disks+ option. Select your TM disk, then again note the oldest backup you see.
When I do that, I don't get a "Browse other TM disks" option.
Uh, you should. Are you sure you're on 10.5.6? Try this one again. What options do you see?
Ok, I'm a dork, just tried it again and got the option. Checked the date on the backup and it is the same, March 15th.
Do you often go several days (more than 10 or so) without a backup?
I have never gone that long without a backup. The only reason I stopped was because TM stopped doing them. About two weeks ago I got aggravated and just turned TM off because I was tired of getting those error messages...but I really want to resolve this issue since I have very important pictures/movies/stuff on here that I want to be safe and backed up!
That's the only other reason I can think of that would cause TM to do new, full backups, and perhaps start a new sequence.
If it does that, sometimes it thinks you have a new Mac. Then it won't delete the oldest backups from the old sequence to make room for new ones (because it thinks they're for a different Mac).
Very carefully, look at your TM disk again with the Finder (this is probably best in List mode (View > As List).
In the Backups.backupdb folder should be a single folder with your computer name (but I suspect there may be more).
There is only one folder, named after my computer.
In that folder should be folders named with dates and times, like the one you found (but without ".inProgress" at the end).
See if there are more than one with your computer name, and the range of dates in each one.
The only folder with a date (other than the .inprogress one) is listed as 2009-03-15-135352. When I look it there, there seems to be a happy backup inside.
Your earlier post said *My HD shows 465GB capacity with 139GB available.* I assume that's your internal HD? How big is your TM disk?
My TM disk is listed as having a capacity of 465.76GB with 4.32GB available.

  • Not sure if this a Time Machine issue or not... Please help!

So I updated my iMac to Snow Leopard. I went from about 186GB to about 205GB AFTER I installed SL.
Then I did my first back up in TM after the install and I noticed something funny...
The space of my Mac HD was getting smaller and smaller as the back up was going.
I have a 1TB external drive I designated for TM and this back up was there when it was finished.
Now, since doing that backup and I think one or two since, the space on my Mac HD is down to 190 or around 188.
I have NOT installed hundreds of pictures, movies. I didn't really change anything much.
I noticed this change while TM was doing its thing. I can't account for anything else that may have caused it.
I reset Safari, clear logs and caches using Terminal.
It seems like the space is still going down a little here and there even when I'm not really using Safari or anything. And I mean just a little.
But that first drop was significant! I want that space back!
    Any suggestions?!
    Thanks!
    Robert

There's a possibility that your TM drive got disconnected at just the wrong time, and TM started putting your backups in the hidden /home directory of your internal disk.
Click here to download the +Tinker Tool+ app. It allows you to change the Finder to show hidden files (among many other things). Select the first option under Finder, then click +Relaunch Finder+ at the bottom. Reverse this when done.
Do not use any of the other options unless you know the possible consequences.
Open a Finder window to your internal HD. Look for the /Home directory. It should be zero kb, and have no contents.
If, however, it contains a folder named the same as your TM drive/partition, containing a Backups.backupdb folder, that's what's happened. Delete the folder named the same as your TM drive (it may contain many files and take a very long time).

  • Time Machine/Time Capsule issues

I have had a never ending series of Time Machine/Time Capsule issues. There's little to configure, so there's not much I could be doing wrong.
One thing I have especially noticed, is that Time Machine is interfering with iTunes. iTunes has frozen for a time or locked up when Time Machine is backing up.
Another problem I have seen is the console log flooded with some sort of waiting for index error. Yet another are messages like -
    "Jul 14 14:43:56 MJBook /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder[176]: StatusMonitor::volumesChangedCallBack returned -47"
The only thing I have ever found odd about my situation is that I am running a Time Machine and three other Airport Express devices. One of the Airport Express units uses WDS, and I heard that could create issues.
    Any ideas?

I have the same question and I see you posted yours in March. So this forum is REALLY helpful...
My Mac consultant doesn't use either so is not much help. He says to erase T.C. and start over, but it also contains all my backups for my other Mac which have worked perfectly. When I select T.C. in T.M. the only option is to Remove Disk; I want to save the MacBook backups. I also tried wireless as he suggested but got the same warnings as above so went back to Ethernet. Plus nobody can tell me how to access T.C. in Disk Utility to try to fix it.

  • How to safely remove all backups from Time Machine/Time Capsule?

I plan to 'clean up' my Time Machine/Time capsule completely, whereby I want to make it impossible for third parties to recover all or part of these old backups.
After I have accompished this I want to start from scratch backing up my Mac.
Can you please let me have a step by step procedure to accomplish my goal.
    Thank you in advance!

    1) I am now specifically looking for info regarding deleting emails from backups.
It is my impression so far, that this is not possible?
Delete all backups of <home folder>/Library/Mail, per Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #12.
And exclude that folder from future backups, per FAQ #10.
    2) In addition I feel that being somewhat better in control of TM that it would be an advantage to really clean out TH completely and start a new back up, thereby systematically blooking certain matters from backing-up since there is no need for doing so.
How would I best accomplish this?
If the emails are all you're worried about, the procedure above will be fine.
But if you want to erase the TC's internal HD, see #Q5 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.

  • What is the best way to store my photos off my mac without using time machine, time capsule?

I heard alot of negative reviews about time machine / time capsule.

Time Machine is about the only way to create a full system backup with a Mac.
Nope, bootable clones is another option and vastly superior actually to TimeMachines basic backup only and undelete ability.
A clone is just that, a exact copy of OS X, bootable, accessible and everything just like the orignal.
Make as many as you need, clone everything in OS X to a larger drive too.

If you normally have multiple computers backing up, under Lion there seems to be some issues.. you need to force other users off the system. You can do that through the Airport utility, manual setup, disks, disconnect all users. Note carefully if you use Lion you probably need to download the real airport utility.. 5.6 to accomplish anything useful.

My messaging app is frozen and I can't text after I tried to spam my friend with a 15,000 character text. I hard closed the app and restarted my phone but still nothing. Please help.

I had the VERY same problem with a iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 8.0.2. I did a hard reset and a full restore to factory settings and then a restore from a back up- nothing worked. I then read Cal4one's post on turning off the read text function (which I had just turned on days before to try out) and ta-da! all is well! I can now use Messages and when I go to attach a picture, the Photo library comes up quickly (it was not before the chance) and the Message app no longer crashes. Just to be safe, I turned off all reading functions in the Accessibility (settings/general/accessibility/speech) settings.

You can only delete them one at a time on the iPad. If you have an IMAP email account, go to your email in on the server using a web browser and select as many as you can at a time and delete them that way. That action will be reflected on the iPad. In IMAP - whatever you do on one device syncs across all devices. If you have POP email - start deleting one at a time.

    Hello lyndsey1430,
From what I can gather, it sounds like you're having issues restoring your device. After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains helpful advice concerning recovery mode:
If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    Use recovery mode
You might need to use recovery mode to restore your device in these cases:
iTunes doesn't recognize your device or says it's in recovery mode.
You see the Apple logo onscreen for several minutes with no progress bar.
You see the Connect to iTunes screen.
Learn what to do if you see the progress bar onscreen for several minutes.
To put your device into recovery mode, follow these steps:
Turn off your device and leave it off.
Plug in your device's USB cable to a computer with iTunes.
Hold down the Home button on your device as you connect the USB cable. Keep holding down the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
When you see this screen, release the Home button. If you don't see this screen, try steps 1 through 3 again.
When your device is connected, iTunes will open. You'll see a message saying that iTunes has detected an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in recovery mode.
Use iTunes to restore your device. Restoring in recovery mode will erase your device. If you previously synced with iTunes or iCloud, you might be able to restore from your backup.

Learn what to do if you don't see your device in iTunes for OS X, or in iTunes for Windows.
If you put your device into recovery mode by mistake, restart it. Or you can wait 15 minutes and your device will exit recovery mode by itself.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
