A Mercury linear color delimma... bad transitions vs. bad animation

Am I missing something here? I'm writing this as sort of a PSA... if you aren't aware of all sides of this issue, I hope you read the second half because you may not realize it's affecting you, too.
When I enable CUDA or Maximum Render Quality, I basically can't use any one-sided transitions. They look wrong and "pop" at the ends.
Apparently, Adobe forgot to rewrite any of their transitions for a linear color space, so Mercury+CUDA basically "breaks" all the transitions that ship with CS5, causing them to render differently than they do in their originally intended gamma of 1.8. I've heard they've added a linear-compatible transition into CS5.5 called "Film dissolve", but there aren't any in CS5. This seems like a pretty huge oversight... I'm surprised they still haven't fixed it in a patch to the original CS5.
So why not just turn off Maximum Render Quality and CUDA during output?
Well, there's another big problem.
If you do any kind of stills animation a la "the Ken Burns Effect" in Premiere, you'll quickly find Premiere leaves a "pixel shimmer" or "ripple" effect across the animation because it is using substandard methods to antialias motion. Looks like a cheap NLE from 2002.
So, you're left to choose... do you want bad one-sided dissolves or bad animation? Personally, I believe a good NLE should not leave identifiable footprints in the edit. If you happen to have have *both* in a Premiere CS5 timeline and it goes out on TV, I'll be able to "out" your NLE as Premiere because no matter which output setting you choose, one or the other problem will show up.
SOLUTION 1: Use AE. The simplest solution is probably to avoid Maximum Render quality and avoid keyframing any Motion parameters. Do it all in After Effects.
SOLUTION 2: Use CS4. It may be possible to edit your sequence with all the benefits of MPE and CUDA, and then send your timeline back to Premiere CS4 and have Premiere/Encoder CS4 render it at max quality. I haven't tested this yet, but I'm intrigued by this possibility. I'll try it soon and report back.
Hopefully I am missing something here. I'm an Avid/FCP/AE guy who is still relatively new to Premiere.
P.S. A second issue is lower thirds and alpha graphics. I bet you made all of yours in After Effects with a 1.8 gamma, didn't you? As far as I know, Premiere does not ship with any video effects that easily control the gamma curve of the alpha channel, so there's no quick fix for all of your currently rendered transparent graphics.

I know if I use the MPE in GPU mode transitions between two PIPs will get a funny black border aroud the PIP. CUDA can do some funny things when transitions and filters that do not have CUDA support are used with GPU enabled. I can only hope Adobe is getting ready to switch to Open CL or Open GL because there are a few glitches with Nvidia's CUDA technology. For Quality I almost think CS 4 was better but you don't get the same amount of realtime. I hope PP CS 6.0 is true broadcast quality instead of just realtime previews. Edius can do it with out the use of GPU acceleration.  I think CUDA is a step in the right direction but I also think it needs a bit more time to mature.

    Hello, hello,
Someone would tell me what is this option?
Setting sequence> composite linear color (or GPU acceleration rendering quality max neccessary)?
I wonder if the fact that my media encoder takes me 6 H encoding to make a video of 17mn which has no effect does not come from there?
Since I do not know what is this option.

  • Constructing a linear color gradient from a string

I am using the following string value for a linear color gardient.
    String value = "from 0% 0% to 100% 0%, white, yellow, black 60%, red, green";
LinearGradient lg2 = LinearGradient.valueOf(value);I am expecting it to use the following list of color-stops:
white 0%, yellow 30%, black 60%, red 80%, green 100%However, I am getting the following at runtime:
white 0%, yellow 25%, black 50%, red 75%, green 100%It is not placing the yellow color in the middle of 0% and 60%, and at the same time, it is modifying the "black 60%" to "black 50%".
It seems to be a bug. I tried to debug the com.sun.javafx.scene.paint.GradientUtils class. It seems that the second last for loop in "public Stop[] parseStops(boolean proportional, double length)" method is the culprit.
Can someone guide me in the right directtion as whther to take it as a bug or it should be interpreted differently?
    Thanks

Thanks for your response. Yes. I have tried specifying positions for all color-stops and the runtime will use them correctly. The problem occurs only when you leave the positions for some and not others.

  • Working in Linear color space confusion

When comping in Nuke we usually use Rec. 709 footage and comp in Linear color space. We can then preview in sRGB or Rec. 709 or whatever othe color space to check what it will look like.
In after effects how do we achieve the same?
    You would think that:
1/ Interpret footage as Rec 709. No problem here.
2/ Set Project to Linear colorspace. But this is were the weird stuff happens. Since you have to select a color space other than linear and THEN tick linear compositing. That is the same as saying that you want composite in two different colorspaces at the same time? Thats is confusing so what is the right way of working here to composite in Linear cool space to get after effect to act the way Nuke does?
    3/ Then Simulate Output  -> Rec 709
    Thank you in advance.

Actually, it seems AE doesn't really do it correctly without specifying color space and clicking "linearize working space" as you can see here (These two images is just a 3D render where I've added the diffuse, reflection, refraction and indirect passes together.): http://i1052.photobucket.com/albums/s443/lostparanoia/AE_LWF_error.jpg
Also, the somewhat correct image is not 100% correct either because of (I assume) the color space adjustments that after effects applies.
Another issue when working in sRGB 2.1 (linear) space is that I can no longer get the correct colors for my solids.
Lets say I need to color pick some company's brand color to use as a background in my comp. When I color pick it, it will be in the completely wrong gamma, but I can't figure out any way to correct it so that it becomes the correct colour. I've tried applying a Color profile converter, and I've tried a inverse 2.2 gamma (0.455). Nothing seems to work. It's just a completely different colour.
So my question is, is there still no way of using a proper linear compositing workflow in AE? And how do you work with solids and the colour picker in sRGB (linear)?

  • Color Print Bad on Savin/ Ricoh C4040

When I print in color from just about any website the color is off with artifacts or black shadows coming off the images. Now I must note that the printer does not have the PPD or postscript that would be desired. So I have the 3 other drivers ghostscript, footmatic rip and the pxl mono. This c4040 has user codes so I used the utility provided in courtesy by mbroughtn.
We tried various browsers to make sure it wasn't a safari thing, and the same problem happens in preview window as well. Oddly, it I use the .pdf document from "about stacks" that one prints just fine in color.
To add insult to injury if I do print in color ( and I understand the above route is slower) it takes a good 10 minutes or more to print a color document as it will spool for a long time. and locked print does not work when used.
It was thought that it could be a problem with the OS X on my computer, perhaps a bad installment. Though, the support reps said that is unheard of.
It is worth noting that I can print color without trouble on a HP, Brother, and other printers. Lastly, I did uninstall and reinstall all the above drivers once again and the results are still the same. Please, if anyone has any suggestions, answers, etc. I would love to hear from you. Thanks for listening

  • Linear Color Space Issue

I've run into an interesting issue using 16bit linear exrs in AE.
All of my 3D footage is rendered in 16 bit linear space, and I am rendering to sRGB IEC611966-2.1 in AE.
I have various color corrections in the comp.  When I export a frame from the comp, and then reimport that frame into the same comp, it is brighter than the comp that it was exported from.
I've exported to both png and openEXR with the same result.
In PShop, I've confirmed that the exported png and exr are identical in color (after reducing the exr to 8bit).  I also know that the color corrections have been applied in the saved frames, because I screen captured the AE screen and pasted it on top of the saved frames in PShop - no color shift.
My guess is that the re-imported frames are not in the correct colorspace, but I've tried a few using 'interpret footage' w/no luck.
    Any ideas?

  • Color not sending transitions and filters back to FCP 7

    Hey People!
I'm currently editing a 30 minute doc for broadcast in Final Cut Pro 7. Before sending to color, I duplicated the master and made it into two 15 minute halves.
I left all transitions and effects intact, which I usually do. I only use cross dissolves. All video is on Track 1.
After correcting the first half I sent it back to FCP without an issue. Transitions and filters remained.
When I finished up with the second half and sent it back to FCP - there were no transitions or filters.
I've tried re-conforming and re-rendering but with no luck.
Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

First off, there's no need to break it up into two sections. Color in FCP 7 handles 30 min sequences just fine. I've done 48 min ones fine.
So you exported an XML from FCP 7, and imported that into Color to reconform, and send back, and it didn't help?  What codec are you sending to Color...?

  • Changing colors on Satin Transition.

I'm mastering a DVD in which the color violet is used a lot. I love the Red/Blue satin alpha transition, but wish it were purple. A big red/blue transition seems out of place.
I tried editing the video within the .dsptransition file, in quicktime...altering the color, saving it (it does save), but when I put everything back...it's still blue.
The other approach I had was to do a video filter on the blue, within Final Cut Pro, saving the file, putting everything back, but the alpha is off, and no fabric, just an a/b transition.
I hope apple could work this feature into future updates.

    but the alpha is off,
You need to set up FCP for and export your satin clip using a codec that supports the Alpha channel such as Apple Animation.
Make sure the color depth is set to Millions+ the plus represents the Alpha channel.

  • Changing color scheme on Transitions and Themes

I would like to use the Newscast theme to create an iMovie; however, I CANNOT use the red color scheme for my audience.  How do I change the color scheme for the transitions?
thanks in advance for any advise!

    sararandazzo8 wrote:
…  How do I change the color scheme for the transitions?
    short answer: you can't.
long answer: most animations and 'moving' elements within iM are realized with a technology called QUARTZ. those animations are 'hardwired' in iM. You'd need a Developer-tool, tons of expertise and have to ignore the EULA you signed on installation/usage of iMovie, changing these parts of iLife.
I tried to change colors and fonts in some preset Titles - technically possible, but not within 'normal' usage
Make a enhancement suggestion, allowing iM to use plug-ins, add-ons, 'Jam Packs' in future versions of iMovie:

  • Colored fragments in transitions in 396 x 263 video

I have a specific frame size I need to export (396 x 263) for a web site. I didn't set the size and don't know how they decided on this size. I have a problem with fragments in transitions.
I created a sequence at this size using the Mobile & Devices ipod Preset and changing the frame size to 396 x 263. I then imported my videos and dragged them into the timeline. The videos were captured at 720 x 480. I resized the movie clips via the Effect Control / Motion / Scale and constrained the scale. When I add a Cross Dissolve to black (either the stage or a title with a black rectangle filling the entire frame) the transition between the black and video creates pink, blue or red fragments on the right side of the frame. These fragments are visible when I export the video to anything.
I have tried creating a 720 x 480 video and resizing/cropping the frame in the export settings but am unhappy with the blurriness of the type in the video due to the scaling from 4:3 to 396 x 263.
Anyone have any ideas why the fragments are occuring?

    Sage,
Sorry to hear about the issue and glad that you solved it, or at least discovered a work-around.

  • Brightness & light colored font-bad sound on HP Pavilion All-in-One, 20-b013w

I help correct learners of English, and when I record the sound on playback is horrible.  I purchased a new mic, but the problem still exist.  Seems like a lot of noise in the background.  A big problem I have with the monitor is the brightness and light color of font.  It is so light that it is very hard to read.  For instance on this page, the blue lettering is hard to read with the screen being so white.  I have a HP Pavilion 20 All-in-One, 20-b013w, and have the Windows 8 on the computer.
How can I improve the sound when I record using a microphone, and is it possible to darken the font and maybe change the contrast?  I am not a computer expert by any means, so if someone can help me I would be very thankful.

Hello leatherneckco.  I understand you're having some trouble with your microphone and your screen's brightness.
What program are you using to record your audio?  Have you tried recording in another application?
A good first step is to uninstall and reinstall the drivers.  Try the following.
From either the Metro or Desktop view press the Windows+X key combination.  This opens the Context Menu.
    Select Device Manager.
Expand the "Sound, video, and game controllers" section.
Right click on your sound card and select Uninstall.
After the uninstallation has completed you should reboot your notebook.
Once Windows loads it will reinstall the device.
Verify whether the issue persists and post the result.
You can adjust your brightness by following these directions or using the monitor's physical buttons.  This document can show you how to change the settings related to your computer's fonts.
I'll keep an eye out for your reply.  Have a good day.

  • Print and Softproof colors are bad for "Application managed color"

Hello... Not sure if my problem is a Mac OS X issue, or a Lightroom issue. Either way I hope it is just user error.
While printing, my prints look good using "printer managed color", both preview and printed output look good. I am used to using "application managed color" and am getting very poor colors, in both the preview and the printed output.
I am somewhat familiar with color management, and understand the basic concepts of profiles.
I have a new iMac 20" display, that is calibrated. I am printing on a HP 8450. It appears that both the printer and LR are trying to manage my color when I am trying to do a "application managed color" print. Not being familiar with OS X, I have not been able to determine how to disable the color management of my printer driver.
If anyone has any suggestions, please help... I have been fighting this off and on all day...
One other thing... off topic, but if anyone knows how to adjust a 20" iMac 20 RGB values, please let me know. I can't see how to manually adjust the individual channels.
    Thanks, Mike

Well, it sounds like you are not getting all your ducks in a row on setting up LR for "application managed color". There aresome excellent step by steps in one or two other threads. A key point is using the individual icc profile for the specific paper not the generic.
To properly calibrate you Monitor you should use a Calibration device, like a Spyder not tweek the numbers by hand/eye.
    It is just user error.
