A million dollar question - Crashed

I used to be a happy user of Power G5, which I bought in 2001 and have been upgraded (not using "Erase and install" option) to 10.5 without any problem. Recently, I realized that the computer were filled with some outdated files i.e. Mac OS9. I felt that it was probably the right time for me to clean them up therefore I did the "Erase and install" on Leopard DVD. The first two installations were failed to complete and got stuck at "remains 2 minutes ....", after opening the Log file, interestingly, it reached the completion. Then I used the Migration assistant (via Time Machine on the 2nd internal HD) and Backup 3 to transfer the applications and files back to HD1. It worked like a charm for a while, then I made a mistake by trashing the Time Machine's backup files on HD2, which was then reformatted under the disk utility. I tired to empty the Trash (for the backup files) but failed, therefore I moved the files back the HD2, and erased it completely again by disk utility.
I thought I moved in a right direction, and started to do the fresh backup with Time Machine, I went on bed but when I woke up in the morning, I heard the G5's fan soared with a big sound, and realized my G5 got crashed. I switched on my computer and tried to erase my HD2 wtih zero out option, but sadly the computer crashed again.
Finally, I did the backup up again on Time Machine, and it got crased again with the following error message

Bingo, I hope it has been solved now. What I have done ?
1. Did the erase and install one more time
2. Changed the Hard Drive name from "Macintosh HD1" to "MacintoshHD1" (without a space)
3. Changed my computer name again without space
4. Deleted (partition) under the disk utility for the external HD for Time Machine and named it without a space
5. Once it has been done, I did not upgrade it to 10.5.1. and without any applications and documents files installation right away. Then I did the first backup with Time Machine
6. Interestingly, it updated very smoothly and fast. It completed within 2 hours for 30GB (instead of previously 6 hours)
7. Upgraded to 10.5.1. and reboot my computer and added iworks and iLifes.
8. Did the backup under TM again without any problem
My conclusion is - thats nothing wrong on the Hardware and Time Machine either. Probably it was a bad courrupted system files (previously), uncompatiable application or corrupted document files caused the problem.

You are confusing the language with the architectural implementation of that language. Delphi for example has a very tight web integration architecture - supporting developing Apache and IIS plug-in modules, CGIs.. or even (using Indy Classes) building your own custom web server. You'll find the same type of thing with many other languages. Including Java. Including PL/SQL.
Java is a language. PL/SQL is a language. Delphi etc.. are all just languages. Anyone that states that one language is "better" than another is, well.. grossly mistaken. (trying hard to put it into polite terms).
Yes, developers have their favourite languages. Pascal/Delphi is mine. But that means nothing when you select a language and an architecture for doing a specific job, meeting a specific business requirement. You select the best tool for the job. That simple.. and that complex.
Java and J2EE are not The Single Solution To All Information System Problems. But this is exactly what J2EE (and Java) is sold as by the religious fanatics and prophets of Java... and why there is this mistaken believe that Java is somehow better than other programming language.. and that J2EE is somewhat superior to other architectures.

THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION: Projects keep becoming corrupted

So I keep importing my mp4 videos into iMovie (obtained by using the Activity Window method to download clips online, then converted it to mp4 using Handbrake) but every time I import a video (it is workable at first) and turn on my computer next time to start working on it, the clips become unusable. There is no playback of any sort in the playback window, no audio or picture, and while occasionally the thumbnails will be appropriate (still no audio though) they can't be used. Then other times the thumbnails turn into these gray and black things that only display a random thumbnail picture (not necessarily the proper corresponding one) when it is scrolled over. I think the videos are getting CORRUPTED but they work when played with quicktime or on my desktop and when they are initiaaly imported into iMovie. It's getting impossible to make any headway on a project when the clips just won't work. MY QUESTION: How do I prevent these corruptions from happening or once I trimmed and edited an imported video that later goes corrupt, how do I un-corrupt my carefully edited work?

Sounds like you are up against copy protection.

Million dollar question CC with Mavericks

I did not upgrade to Mac Mavericks when it first came out as I read of alot of issue and bugs CC+Mavericks. We are now Feb and am considering upgrading to Mavericks. Has most of the majo issues and bugs been solved or am I better off staying with OS10.8?

The Million Dollar Question

I know the iPhone does not have the copy & paste function but does anyone know if there is a program or some how to get this feature?
There are quotes, spell check and other info I want to copy from web pages / notes then be able to paste via email. The spell check on the iPhone is not that good but then again I guess I need to learn how to spell.. LOL
I heard the January update was suppose to have this function but I guess apple is still working on it.

I'm not aware of this being available from a 3rd party which would require hacking/modifying an iPhone in order to use it. Doing so can potentially void the iPhone's warranty if a problem arrises that would normally be covered under the warranty.
More than likely, Apple is working on this - with a touch screen interface probably a little tricky in regards to getting this right.

The 1 Million Dollar Question?

I have a Macbook and i find it funny that the little rainbow ball keeps appearing a lot. This computer has a Intel Core Duo, one of the best mobile processors out there, but i still get that annoying rainbow ball one i open a browser or messenger.
I have 512MB of ram in the Macbook, do you think i should upgrade to 2GB? Does it really make a difference?

Yes, you should definitely upgrade. You are getting the beachball because that fast Intel Core Duo is doing nothing while the disk subsystem is swapping out megabytes of data just about anytime you click the mouse.
Go to this site and buy a couple of the 1 GB memory chips. Better do it soon because memory prices are on the way back up. If you have a smallish phillips-head screwdriver you can install those chips yourself in about 5 minutes.

We are using Windows NT 3.51 and Forte 2.0.F.2. We did have ORACLE
version 7.1.3.3.6.
We contacted ORACLE regarding another bug in that version (memory leak
and associated application errors) and they gave us a maintenance
release - 7.1.3.3.22. This also fixed the Million Dollar Problem.

I got a problem when I try to insert a record into oracle table via Forte's
SQL command.
The field defined in Oracle table is NUMBER.
the code in forte looks like this:
amount : double = 1000000.00;

The result in oracle table is ':000000' ( No error message was given,
both Oracle and Forte).
But if I replace the :amount with 1000000.00 directly, Oracle table has the
right value.
I try another way by initialize the value in text format, and convert them
to number using oracle's
to_number() function. This time it works fine.
There is no problem with other values, like 1000001, 500000000.00, etc.
The only one I have problem so far is 1000000 and 1000000.00
Anyone knows something that I do not realized ????

Installation Issue worth a million dollars!

Ok, anyone that can explain this one stands a chance for the million dollar prize!
We have an application that runs perfectly fine on my PC, during dev and after installation.
I give the installer to a colleage to run on his pc. He installs, hits run, and the App does not work. It just sits on the first loaded html.
If we simple edit the default.html file that was installed on his machine (the main app file) and do anything to it, add a space, an extra line, remove a tab, anything... and then save the file... the app will then work.
Er... explain this one?
His PC is XP with the latest updates and running Air 2.7. The app was also compiled with 2.7 SDK.

That sounds like a text format encoding issue. Probably the HTML files are encoded in UTF-8 with a BOM (or get a BOM somewhere along the process). Check your files with Notepad++ (free code editor, NOT the one included with Windows) and see if they have a BOM or not (if you can read "ANSI as UTF-8", they don't have a BOM, and if you see just "UTF-8", they DO have a BOM). You can also "see" the BOM by using the "type" command in a Windows console:
type myfile.html |more
If the first three characters shown are something like:
´╗┐
Then the file has a BOM. Flash/AIR doesn't seem to like it.
I also had an AIR application that didn't work each time a settings
file was edited with Windows Notepad (the bundled basic editor),
even if just a space was added at the end, and that was because
Windows Notepad adds a BOM to any UTF-8 file, with no option
to do otherwise (unlike Notepad++). I lost a lot of time until I realized
that was the problem.
So check that your HTML files do not have a BOM and try again.
I hope that works!

N97 Million Dollar Poker problem.

Ok so not really a nokia issue but I am still up a certain creek without a paddle.
Installed it, played a few times then it froze... to the extent you just couldnt do anything with it apart from uninstall it from the phone. I have then since been trying to get it re-downloaded from the N-Gage bit of the nokia pages and I will have to pay for it again. Ok granted paying £4 was ok once but it was that good a game I want to pay for it twice.
Anyone know who I would need to contct at Nokia who could figure out a way I could reinstall it again...
Yeah yeah I know I should have backed up the phone but I've only had a week and no-one backs their new phone up that soon!

You can also un-assign them (get them back) assuming Sun hasn't changed the web site lately, but I don't remember exactly the URL you have to hit. Search the forums for "reward.jsp" and see if you can find another post about doing that.

Random Questions crash

I'm trying to use the Random Questions in Captivate3 using
built up pools of questions, every time I try to preview the
project it loads 25% and stays there for ever (hold the project).
Has any one come across a solution to this problem?

Hi,
How big is the question-pool that you are trying to publish ?
Ideally a pool in CP3 should not have more that 15-20 questions, Also the project itself should not have more that 40-50 slides.
To check if this is a bug or not try out the following steps :-
1) copy 2 questions from your pool.
2) close the project.
3) create a new project.
4) open quiz pool manager.
5) paste the questions to the default pool.
6) add couple of random questions in the project.
7) preview and check

69 mllion dollar question

ok, I am thinking of buying the new Mac Pro. However I am wondering how future proof the machine is likely to be. If I were to buy the new mac pro, upgrade the g/card to a 4870, how likely is it that I can upgrade the card in the future. i guess the question is what can you do to a G5 mac now...can it take then 3870? I really would like a Mac, and dont really want an Alienware which s the competition, but I am likely to use the mac pro for gaming. So any suggestions on the future proofing/upgradability of the mac generally...TIA

Thats really disappointing, I am really sold on the Mac thing. I've had a Mini Mac and more recently a Macbook Pro and been pleased with both of them. I was hoping I could get the MP and run it on a wifi network around the house and link in with the other two computers, and when I want the power and cutting edge graphics power, I could use the MP in windows mode.
I've heard that the cards option is a bit wider in windows...If I were to get the MP buy the best card available now, ie the 4870 in time could I improve that with other cards not natively designed for a mac but which work in windows...?

IPhone 4 sounds like the Six Million Dollar Man when I lock it.

This just started earlier today. Anyone else have this occur? Any known reason for it?

Restart... Reset... Restore from Backup... Restore as New...

If you try all these steps and you still have issues... Then a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is the Next Step...
