A mind of it's own...

I've been posting about the situation(s) I've been having with my dual 2.0 GHz G5 (June 2004). Well, it's booting again and has actually run a few times (before randomly freezing up-no KP, just everything stops).
The problem is that it seems it will only boot when it wants. Every single time it gets to the grey screen with the Apple, and practically every single time the gear will spin. However, it will hardly ever get past that. I'm to the point now where I flip the mouse over to see the red light come on when it first starts, then briefly go out when the grey screen comes on. If the red light comes back after the brief pause (the time between the first grey screen and the spinning gear) then I know it will continue to boot-I'll hear the hard drive start to chirp and it will load. If the light doesn't come back, then it will sit there in silence and spin it's little heart out.
I guess my question is, what causes it to boot and sometimes not. If I go into single user mode, majority of the time it will take a while for any text to show up and report that it's looking for the root device. Other times it almost instantaneously takes me to where I can type commands. I've erased the hard drive, installed a clean OS, swapped RAM, PMU, PRAM, NVRAM-you name it. Would it be worth Zero-ing the hard drive, rather than erase? Does it sound like a logic or processor failure?
Sorry about the long post but the last time it booted, it ran for over five hours before freezing so I know it can do it-it just has a hard time doing it and is anything but reliable.
Also, my hard drive says it does not support S.M.A.R.T. Does this mean anything?

It didn't randomly freeze this time. I got the full fledged drop-down -like a horrible black curtain-Kernel Panic. Anything useful in that log? Are a KP and freezing the same or similar. Either way I have to hold the power button to shut down.

  • My crazy Android has a mind of it's own!

I have an Android HTC touch screen that I bought from Verizon last January 2012, actually two of them. I started having problems with one of the phones about 6 months ago with the screen not unlocking as though it was not responding to touch at all. A few months later the other phone started having the same problem only worse. It has gotten so bad that the phone seems to have a mind of it's own. I have watched it flip around wildly and call one of my contacts on it's own many times. I have even watched it get on the internet and apps all on it's very own. I was on the phone a fews weeks ago with Verizon CS Rep. about my Veroizon Bill. I mentioned the problems with my phone to the CS rep. I ask if Verizon knew of any problems like that with the Android and she said "No, but those touch screens are really touchy". I got online today to see what I could find out about problems with the Android HTC. There seems to be a long list of people having the very same problems with this model. I have shut it down and pulled the battery several times to try and reset it. It NEVER works. I have an 11 hour trip this weekend with a child. Could you please contact me today or tomorrow. Please contact me via email if I don't answer because I can never tell if my phone is going to let me answer it! You can also contact me on a land line for the next two days.

This is a customer-to-customer forum, not Customer Service.  Verizon reps occasionally respond to posts, but it's sporadic and often days, if not weeks, after a post is left.  If you need an immediate response, you may want to contact Customer Service at *611 from a cell phone or 800-922-0204 from a landline.

  • My Touch has a mind of it's own!

Has any one else experienced anything like this? My new iPod Touch appears to have a mind of it's own.
Although I can slide to unlock the screen it then refuses to react to any motion or touch. However, applications open themselves, completely unprompted. I have no control. And, if the Notes app starts letters/numbers/characters appear completely at random. It's hard to explain - it's as if my iPod is haunted or being controlled remotely by someone else. Does that make sense?
The only way for me to get any control is to push the Home key. Sometimes I can't even slide to power off.
I'm really annoyed - I bought the iPod the day before going on holiday. Registered it, loaded the latest software as prompted on iTunes, filled it with songs and podcasts and then packed it away. Only for it to go wrong the next day in the hotel room before I got to the beach. Gutted. I've just returned from holiday - I've tried resetting it, like Apple suggest, by holding down the Home key and the on/off button until the Apple logo appears but this still doesn't offer any solution. Have also tried the Restore through iTunes, twice. However, my iPod still does has 'a mind of its own'.
If it was a software problem the Restore would've fixed it, right? It's got to be hardware, hasn't it? (By the way, it's a 2G Touch running 2.1.1)
I'm lost as to what to do. I bought it from the (nearest) Apple store in Cambridge, UK. It's a 120 mile round trip, there and back - returning to the store isn't going to be possible for a couple of weeks. I'm going to call Apple tomorrow to see what they say - but, before I do, thought I'd share my experience with other users... anyone else had anything like this happen to theirs?
    John.

I was referring to the thread here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1584043&tstart=250 where 3 different people report strange behavior using the same leather case.
Jailbreaking is a bad idea, and very bad advice. Discussing it violates the TOU of these forums, and doing it will void any warranty on the iPod.
    Regards.

    Hi TakesTwo2Tango,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  It sounds like you should definitely be seeing a plus sign after tapping Edit, so I would try a couple relatively easy things (closing the Music app, resetting the iPhone):
iOS: Force an app to close

iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting

  • Difficulty Cropping - crop window has mind of it's own

When I crop photos (Edit - Crop), the crop window has a mind of it's own.  I select crop, click and drag a corner or edge, and then another, and the window moves and resizes to something else.  It takes a number of tries moving the window or edges back and forth until I can get the crop that I want.  Note: I do not have the restrict aspect selected.  It's very anoying.  What to do?  (iPhoto '11 v9.4.2 on OSX 10.7.5)

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7 or later: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • Safari has a mind of it's OWN, it keeps reverting back to the previous website and screen flipping through my previous web history??  HELP!!!!!!

I have Lion 10.7.2 and use Safari 5.  When I get online and open a website, then go to a new website Safari will take me right back to the previous site automatically.  I have reset Safari and there is not an issue with the interenet access.  Went to the Apple Store and the same issue happen.  Example:  Logged on and went to homedepot.com, after looking at the website, I went to weatherunderground and was taken right back to homedepot.com.
Checked, updated Flash, still the same issue.  I am now starting to loose emails.  I could be in the middle of typing an email and I get reverted back to the previous website.  Does anyone have insite as to what is going on or has Safari 6 fixed some of these bugs that are going on?  I can't take much more of getting thrown back through my previous web history.   Thanks.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • IMac having a mind of it's own

Last couple of days, whenever I turn on the iMac, it won't let me access the keyboard (typing, volume, ect). And whenever I try to choose anything with the mouse, it gets all buggy by moving through all the selections under any menu item I choose. I'm using an older style wired mac keyboard for Final Cut Pro, if that's any help.
It has done this sort of thing before, in a way - about a month ago, whenever I would use Final Cut Studio 2, without warning, it would suddenly go dark and bring up the menu from Front Row, then face to dark and bring up Final Cut again. About a week or two of doing this, it stopped, making me think I was fine.
Is there some issue with Mac OS that shipped with it that I'm not aware of? In any case, I want my iMac to work like it's supposed to. Any suggestions would be of great help at this point.

Wouldn't hurt to reset the PRAM at your leisure as it is quick and painless. Seems to be a 'catch-all' solution to weird things that occasionally happen. At least Mac users rarely need to use it, unlike my frequent <CTRL><ALT><DELETE> days on Windows to 'fix' problems in the good old days.

  • N95 Mind of it's own!

I have an N95 which has suddenly started doing it's own thing.
It started with it turning itself off and on, then randomly ringing people.
It is now impossible to turn the phone on without it going crazy, I switch it on then all it does is go through menus trying to call last number, connect to wap, send mms, all completely randomly and I cannot stop it.
I have tried to do a reset using the call button + * + 3 but all that happens is the phone starts as normal then goes mad again, with me unable to get into any menus or control what it is doing. Without getting into the menus I cannot do a hard reset.
Firmware has been updated and memory stick has been formatted and now removed.
I tried getting in touch with 02 but as it is now out of warranty they didn't want to know.
I have cleaned the phone(under keypad & battery contacts) using a make up brush to remove any dust(just in case),
Can anyone help with any ideas please?

The warranty starts on the day of purchase of the original phone that was replaced.
O2 are within their right to refuse to have anything to do with the phone past the initial 7-day cooling period during which they must take it back if you decide against keeping the phone and contract for whatever reasons. Thereafter you should always go to a Nokia Care Point.

  • Since ios8 my ipad mini has a mind of it's own

I have an iPad mini (14 months old). downloaded the ios8 software on the weekend and since then my iPad is acting on it's own ie
    - changing apps
    - inserting characters
    -creating new web pages
    - at one stage I couldn't log in as when I entered a 4 for example it highlighted a 7 or sometimes three &'s
Phoned apple who told me to reinstall the software by linking to itunes. Backed the data up and did a full restore.
The iPad behaved for less than 24hrs and has started it's tricks again.
Very frustrated and how typical I am 2 months out of the warranty period.
Can someone offer some sound advice please.
    Thanks

Probably you would not want to restore it from a backup, but set it up as a new device. You can re-download your iTunes purchases (apps, music, movies, etc.), and then manually set up your email, iCloud, etc. But it may be something on the backup itself that is the issue. So, restoring from a backup would just put you in the same boat.
Also, I think a trip to the Apple Store with both devices would be a good idea. They may be able to sort it right away. Sometimes it's easier to effectively troubleshoot an issue when you have a device in front of you.
Any chance you have any 3rd party apps (apps not from the App Store) on the device? These could also cause issues.
    Cheers,

  • I am unable to type emails after updating. What I type does not resemble what I see. The mouse has a mind of it's own, and scrambles the words I type..

Firefox crashes a few times every night (it crashed instantly when I updated tonight!) That is not a huge problem, but this is. The last time I updated I had problems typing emails.
I begin to type an address or subject and the text is highlighted and scrambles instantly. I have never had this problem before. The browser tag seems to "flash" too...
I reboot the machine (using a mac laptop) which seems to help a little, but this is both infuriating and time consuming.

You can do a check for corrupted and duplicate fonts and other font issues:

I put my Imac to sleep over night, but when i go to use it it has shut down, and then my internet stops working on my ipad and phone as well until I restart my Imac and then I have problems with my internet.  This has happened about 5 or 6 times now.

Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem  & the Startup right after that for clues.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

  • IPod Touch 2G Playback Has a Mind of It's Own

Hi, I'm having a major problem with my iPod Touch 2G 4.2.1. I'm using headphones with built-in playback control, Nuforce NE-7Ms, great headphones for the price, by the way. With these headphones plugged in, music randomly starts, stops, skips, fast forwards, etc. So, I did some tests to determine the problem. I tested a different pair of headphones with no built-in playback control and had no playback issues. I then tested the Nuforce NE-7Ms on a different iPod (Nano) that supports playback control from the headphones and also had no problems there. This leads me to believe that there is either a problem with my iPod Touch's headphone jack or with the firmware that is causing this. No problems with the headphones from what I can tell. The obvious solution is to use headphones without playback control, but I like my headphones and paid a decent amount for them, so I'd rather not. Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar issue or has any advice. Thanks.
EDIT: Out of warranty, by the way.

I would try in this order:
    - Resetting you iPod
Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restoring from backup via iTunes
    - Restoring to factory defaults, also via iTunes.
I also confirmed that they should work per the manufacture's website.

  • Vibrate / Silent function has a mind of it's own!

    Hi guys and gals,
OK so I've signed up as I've just discovered a fault with my iPhone3 3GS, done a bit of googling and found others have had the same problem, wanted to see what you guys thought of it.
I bought the phone August 2009 brand new. After months of me thinking I am going mad and that I am coming down with the infamous 'vibrating phone syndrome' where you think your phone vibrated in your pocket but it did not - I have finally discovered the phone is indeed vibrating for no reason!
When in silent mode, if the phone is touched in a certain way or is squeezed gently near the top left corner, it will take itself out of silent mode and when released it will go back into silent mode and will vibrate! This is very annoying! It happens all the time!
I have tried other iPhones (3GS and 3G) and they do not do the same thing. There must be something wrong with the switch maybe? If so, what? Can I get a replacement (as I don't want a repair - £550 is much too much to pay for something and then have some guy take it apart and fiddle about in it after only 10 months)? And how do I go about getting this done?
    TALK TO ME
    Thanks

I almost neverswitch my phone to ring, ever since i got my phone almost a year ago, I've prefered it on silent. A few days ago my phone started randomly switching from ring to silent and back without the switch ever being touched. I know that the switch was not move because i have a case that covers it and also i can literally look at the switch, not even touch it, and my screen will show that it is frantically switching back and forth from silent to ring.

  • H520 PC has mind of it's own .....

I have had a Lenovo H520 PC since August 2013. After a week or so the PC, having been closed down properly, would spontaneously start after a few minutes and occasionally after being 'off' for 30 minutes or so.  I contacted Lenovo who advised me to reset the PC. This did not solve the problem.   After a short time I contacted Lenovo support who agreed that there was a fault and arranged to have the PC uplifted for repair or replacement under warranty. It was uplifted and sent to Germany and after 2 weeks it was returned with a report saying that it had been repaired.  -
