A modem/wireless router in one, Airport Exreme and Express...oh my, help!

Hi,
I'm upgrading to a faster internet connection (ADSL2, 22MB) and my ISP is forcing me to buy a modem from them for the upgrade to go through (connection price will be the same as my current 8MB ADSL charge). Now, the one and only modem they have on offer is the Netgear DG834GT ( http://www.dsl-warehouse.co.uk/product.asp?pr=DG834GT for more info ).
This modem is a wireless router and modem in one. My problem is, I already have an AirPort Extreme base station, along with an AirPort Express station (as a WDS to cover the parts of my house which Extreme alone can't cover). So if I get this Netgear modem which is a wireless router as well, is it possible I can STILL use my current setup of Extreme and Express? Surely, if AirPort Extreme alone can't cover my house, this Netgear modem can't manage it on its own. What I want to know is, will I be able to switch off the wireless signal on the Netgear modem once I get it and connect AirPort Extreme through one of the ethernet ports on the modem to act as my wireless router? That way, I can set up AirPort Express as a WDS. There shouldn't be any technical limitations or some kind of block from allowing me to do this, right?
Thanks.

Yes, you certainly can connect your existing Airport Extreme Base Station (set up as a WDS main base station) to one of the LAN ports on the DG834GT. You would want to disable the router built into the Airport Base Station by unchecking the setting to "Distribute IP addresses" found under the Network tab of the Airport Admin Utility. When doing so, ignore any warning messages about doing so on a Base Station set up for WDS. After doing this, pull power from the Airport Express to force it to reboot and restart all wireless Macs.
As for the DG834GT itself you could disable its wireless transmitter if possible, and if not just turn its power down to the minimum. However, you might first see what sort of range you get with just the DG834GT - it is possible that it might succeed in providing all the wireless coverage you need.

  • Modem/Wireless Router: Connection

Hi all. I'm looking into purchasing a modem/wireless router combo. I only have one computer (laptop), so I would mainly use the router in order to connect throughout my house without wires.
1.) Everything I read about routers mentions connecting the router to one computer so other devices can access the signal. What if I only have one computer? Will the router/modem work on its own without being wired to any devices?
2.) Can I use the router/modem combo with the wireless option turned off? Can I connect through an ethernet cable directly when I want to?
    Thanks in advance!
    BK

1). Yes, although you'll have to connect to the modem through an ethernet cable at first to set everything up.
2).  That depends on the make and model of your modem/wireless router.  Some offer the fucntion of turning the radio off. Many do not offer this fucntionality.

  • Modem/wireless router choice

My current setup is DSL to Westell modem, ethernet to Airport Extreme(n), ethernet from AE to Dell desktop, and AE wirelss to MBP. Yesterday my modem crashed, so what I'd like to do is get a modem/wireless router combo (DSDL-2???) that still allows my PC to be connected via ethernet(no wireless card on PC) and then set up the AE to extend the wireless signal from the new wireless router. Can anyone recommend a particular brand and/or setup for a good quality modem/wireless router that would me the needs stated above?

That is not possible. the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) will only wirelessly extend a network if that network is created by another AEBS, an AirPort Express (AX), or a Time Capsule.
None of Apple's base stations, including the Time Capsule, can act as a modem. They all require an Ethernet connection to the internet.

  • I have an airport express and want to know how to set up two different wireless networks. One with 5GHZ and one with 2.4GHZ so different devices can connect to either.

I have an airport express and want to know how to set up two different wireless networks. One with 5GHZ and one with 2.4GHZ so different devices can connect to either. I have an iphone 4 that will not connect to 5ghz.
    thank you!

Your AirPort Express is already providing two separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, but each band is using the same wireless network name.
This is the default setup for the AirPort Express, which is recommended for most users. The theory here is that devices will automatically connect to the best quality signal based on their capabilities and distance in relation to the AirPort Express.
It is possible to assign a different name to the 5 GHz band, and then "point" devices at that network to connect. Some users swear by this option.....(I am not one of them).... but you might want to give it a try to see how it works for you.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click on the AirPort Express
Click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window
Click Wireless Options near the bottom of the next window
Enter a check mark next to 5 GHz Name.....which will automatically add "5 GHz" to the network name....so you can identify it
Click Save, then click Update and wait a full minute for the Express to restart
Now you will need to "point" your 5 GHz capable devices at the 5 GHz network name.  2.4 GHz devices will connect to your "other" network name.

  • HT4145 Can I link up a Dlink wireless router to a Airport Base Station

    Hi All,
need advise on whether can I link up a Dlink wireless router to a Airport Base Station and if can how do I set it up.
    with regards and thank you

If your goal is to either extend the D-Link's Wi-Fi network with the AirPort or the other way around, then the answer is no. That is because, most non-Apple routers are not WDS-compatible with the AirPorts.

    Thank you for your response.
I had rebooted the router (several times, actually), to no avail.
I do not know the answer to whether MAC filtering is enabled on the router.  Have tried to find info about that, but unsuccessfully.  Router is an Arris TG852G, supplied by Comcast.  I would be surprised if MAC filtering were the issue, since in addition to the computer, we have successfully connected several other devices to the wifi, namely an iPad, a Android phone and a Kindle Fire - all able to access internet pages through the wifi, and all without a need to add the device to a MAC address whitelist.  To add to the mystery, the Comcast tech was able to connect his iPhone 4 to my network and access web pages.  He was unable to connect my iPhone, however, after trying for some time.
I seem to recall reading somewhere that an iPhone cannot connect to a wireless "n" router, only "b" or "g".  The Arris router is described as a n/g/b compliant router, and as noted the Comcast tech was able to connect his iPhone, so don't know why that would be the issue here.
By the way, my iPhone does connect wirelessly to my network at home.  This difficulty is at a second home.
Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

  • I have an airport extreme and express, if I use the extreme as a base station connected to my old router can I use the express to extend the signal while also creating a new network that only I can use?

I have an airport extreme and express, if I use the extreme as a base station connected to my old router can I use the express to extend the signal while also creating a new network that only I can use? Essentially having two wifi connection off the same network? If so how do I set this up?

Extending using a wireless connection always results in a performance compromise.
If the Express is going to extend using a wireless connection, then the Express will need to be located about half way between the AirPort Extreme and the general area where you need more wireless coverage. The more that you have line-of-sight between the Extreme and Express, the better the network will operate.
Remember......the Express can only "extend" the quality and signal speed that it receives, so it needs to be located where it can get a very good signal from the Extreme. Although Apple cleverly uses the term "extend", a more accurate term for the Express would be "repeater".
If the Express will extend by connecting to the Extreme using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection......highly recommended for best performance.....then the Express can be located exactly where you need more wireless coverage. There is no signal loss at all through the Ethernet cable, so the Express gets a full speed signal no matter where it might be located.
Post back to let us know which way to you want to go.

  • Configure WRT54G Wireless Router with PUBLIC IP address and use DHCP for internal computers

Hi,I have an Internet online service with 5 public IP addresses. The router and the AP are connected to a switch. I would like to configure a WRT54G wireless router with one of this IP public Address and use DHCP (with private ip address)  for the computers that will connect to the AP. As the AP is connected to the switch it is possible that other wired computers that are connected to the same switch can obtain an IP address from the DHCP ?
     Thansk in advance

Thanks for your help. Please correct me if Im wrong. After connecte the equipments the way you suggestI setup a static IP address (The public IP)  in the WRT54GI enable DHCP in the WRT54G with a range from 10.10.0.100 to 10.10.0.200 (as an example) The gateway is the Public IP address right ? How do I route the 10.10.0.x addresses to the public IP address. Thansk again

  • Airport Extreme and Express not working with Leopard

Both Exreme and Express appeared on Disk Utilty as "green" and worked with Tiger, after I installed new OS Leopard neither appears and cannot connect wirelessly.
    What's up? TOM

Although the Upgrade path is touted as the "simplest" if may be the most troublesome if your Mac had a lot of third-party applications running on it prior to upgrading. Unfortunately, it's too early to offer much advise on what may have gone wrong with your AirPort connectivity. My guess, at this time, is that you may have some corrupted AirPort configuration files in your System folder.
Do you, by chance, have a clone backup of your previous disk? If so, it might be worth the trouble to return your Mac to its previous configuration, and then, try upgrading using the "Archive and Install" method. This will ensure a "clean" copy of Leopard, and just transition your user settings as appropriate. You may also want to post in the new Leopard Discussions area as well.

  • Airport extreme and express & apple TV

I have an airport extreme and express & apple TV. I'd like to do the following:
    1) Extend the network via the express
    2) Enable the express to stream music to the stereo from the apple TV
I am sure someone has figured this out but I can't find the answer...
    Thank you

Firstly, the easiest bit (although I don't believe you need to do this):
I would try "downgrading" the Extreme station's network type to only b/g (excluding n entirely), but I don't see that option in the radio settings anymore
You will get additional settings if you hold down the option key while browsing the radio settings drop down menu.
Moving on: Unfortunately a dropped connections seems to be a problem with umpteen causes and not only is it difficult to troubleshoot with someone in a forum it can also be made even more difficult because many problems are associated with network settings on a router that the person who is trying to help is unfamiliar with.
However you seem to be convinced your problems arise when your express is running which may narrow things down a little if correct, if not it may actually lead us away from the answer to your issue.
Is it the kind of security I'm running? Should I try WEP or... none at all?
I use WPA and have no problems (password = 8 Characters)
Should I attach it a different way? Perhaps manually set it to "participate in a WDS network" or "extend a wireless network?
I have my expresses set to participate in a WDS network, but that's because I use them for other things other than itunes, I would have thought 'join a network' would be fine.
You could check that all your devices are using independent IP addresses and all are using the same subnet. You could also check that no two devices have the same mac address, I've been told a million times this can't happen, but I've seen it. You may be wise to check these things before and after your devices have been 'kicked off the network", you may even want to write them down to see if any are changing.

trying to reconnect airport express to time machine but express not showing up in base station.  unfortunately clicked forgot in airport utility and express no longer shows up.  how to reconnect?

I would recommend setting the wireless encryption on the AirPort Express BEFORE configuring it for the AirPort Extreme in this case. This issue also comes up often when configuring AirPorts into a WDS.
If setting up security in my recommend order does not work, temporarily connect the Express by Ethernet to the Extreme; make the security changes, and then, move the Express back to the desired location.

  • Airport Express w/ 3Com 11g ADSL modem, wireless router

    Hello all,
I have been tring to set up my Airport Express with my 3Com ADSL modem and wireless router all-in-one using WDS.
Initially while experimenting the express was showing up in the Airport Admin Utility, I tried a few settings and it does not show up anymore. The amber light keeps blinking and thats that!
Is there anyway I can reset the airport express? Also, how should I use it to extend the range of my wireless connection through out my home?
Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

You can't wirelessly. The 3Com is not compatible with Apple's WDS which is the method for using the AirPort Express to wirelessly extend a network.
You can do it by connecting your AirPort Express via Ethernet to the 3Com.

  • Replacing and old wireless router with a Airport Extereme

I recently purchased a Airport Extereme. I replaced my old wireless router that connected directly from my phone jack. I can not get my Airport to connect the same way. What am I missing?
    Neill

Your old wireless router may have been a combination modem and router. The AirPort Extreme still needs a modem. It can be either a DSL or cable modem, but it requires one with an Ethernet port - the Extreme cannot connect directly to a landline telephone system.

  • Can I Add a Second Wireless Router to my Airport Extreme?

I have an Airport Extreme 802.11n, (the square one).
I just bought a new wireless Epson All-in-One, the Artisan 700.
Even though this is a brand new model, Epson foolishly built it as 802.11g, and not 802.11n. Who knows what they were thinking. 802.11n has been around long enough for them to have incorporated it into their newest models... Oh, well.
Anyway, I understand that any 802.11g element on my 802.11n network will slow everything down to 802.11g speed. I obviously do not want that to happen, but I do not want to lose the convenience of wireless printing and scanning.
So here is what I want to do, and I'd like to know if it will work.
Can I buy a cheap 802.11g wireless router, and plug it into one of the three <---> ethernet outputs on my Airport Extreme, and have a second wireless network, providing both internet and wireless printing/scanning at 802.11g, while preserving the speed of the Airports 802.11n? The idea would be to stay connected to the Airports 802.11n network except when printing, then switch to the 802.11g network.
Alternatively, I imagine if that will not work, I could just set up a cheap 802.11g wireless router, not connected to the Airport Extreme, or the internet, but solely there to provide me with wireless printing.
Any help, or other ideas is greatly appreciated!

Yes, this is known as a "dual band" network.
Setting up a "dual band" network is described in the Designing AirPort Networks document, starting on page 48.
