A multi-file version of File Info/Export (to xmp)

I have 8500 video files that I have tagged with multiple keywords.  These are all AVI so the file cannot store metadata.
I want to preserve a backup of the metadata in xmp sidecars for safety (backup, future proofing, sharing).
File Info/Export seems to do the trick but only works on single files (if you multi-select, export is disabled).
Has anyone written a script to exactly mimic this Export feature but for multiple files??  I have both CS5.5 and CS6.
I have seen some that export custom schema but I want something that is standardized.  I like how the export function writes both hierarchical and flat keyword trees for example.
Thanks!
Mark.

XMP sidecar files are not very useful as they contain all the metadata, most of which is not worth keeping.
A much better method is to extract the relevant metadata to a CSV file.
These CSV files can be used to put metadata back into files.
As an example...

  • Custom file info panel to xmp

I have a custom file info panel I use on an old version of photoshop, have 20gigs of pictures with data. with cs5 and 6 haven't figure how to convert except manually which would be VERY painful. Is there a conversion for file info panels to xmp? can I run creative cloud and still install an older version of photoshop?

    I've found answer:
    group(placement: place_row, spacing: gSpace, horizontal: align_fill, reverse: rtl_aware)
    static_text( name: '$$$/CustomPanels/Widgets/static_text=Naglowek:',font: font_small_bold_right, vertical: align_top);
    edit_text(horizontal: align_fill, height: 54, xmp_namespace: photoshop, xmp_path: 'Headline', container_type: alt_struct, v_scroller: true);

  • Custom File Info Panels Doc Available !!

Documentation for creating your own custom file info panels is available at:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/xmp/custompanel.html
I'm interested in hearing your feedback!
The custom File Info panel for XMP metadata allows you to define, create, and manage custom metadata properties using standard Adobe applications. You can do this by creating a Custom Panel Description file, and placing it in a common location referenced by Adobe applications that support this feature. You can also supply localization dictionary files to localize the contents of your Custom Panel Description files. The resulting custom dialog panel is seen by users when they select the File Info menu option.
The File Info panel allows you to support paths to metadata properties which are not defined in default or other standard XMP schemas, but are needed for your application, company, or industry. By using XMP for that metadata, you take advantage of the potential of XMP for interchange and participation in asset management systems, while providing the ability to use standard Adobe applications to manage it.

    Mark,
The PDF/A extension schema provides a big step to the self-sufficient functionality that you are asking about. It permits the XMP schema description information of custom XMP schemas to be embedded into the XMP as payload so that the file can be opened in years to come and the target metadata acurately interperted. Currently, PDF tools are active candidate to make use of this facility. However, there is nothing preventing future use with other file formats, and other tools (via plug-ins?).
It does not include vocabulary, static text, and panel presentation layout information.
    http://www.pdfa.org/doku.php
It defines a "known" subset of standard XMP properties from the 2001 XMP Spec. Everything else is "custom".
You could craft a custom File Info "template" with the PDF/A extension for your custom XMP fields. Then import the template into each file.
The PDF/A extension schema itself is implemented with multi-dimensional XMP arrays. MetaGrove Plug-in dialog screen shots can be viewed on http://www.poundhillsoftware.net/Acrobat.htm

  • XMP Custom File Info panels vs. Custom Metadata

Sorry if this question is a little confused, but I don't exactly know what I am talking about yet.
I use Rob Cole's custom metadata plug-in, which is great as far as it goes. As I understand it, it is a way to create custom data fields in the Lightroom database, give them labels, and manipulate and sort images according to those values. It is very useful for what it is. However, where it shows its seams is when you want to edit an image outside of Lightroom and then import the image back into Lightroom (for instance exporting the image, or editing it in Photoshop). In that case there is no way to get the data in the original into the derived copy except by doing it by hand, which can be very labor intensive if you, say, export a few hundred or a few thousand images. And, of course, you can only see the custom metadata in Lightroom, since it doesn't live in the file.
If I understand it correctly, "Custom File Info panels" for xmp data should just solve this problem. You would define your data, and it would be understood by "standard Adobe applications". A brief search of the web does not indicate that Lightroom is one of these "standard Adobe applications", so I assume that while I can use these panels in Bridge and in Photoshop, the data would not be available to me in Lightroom?
    Any insight?
    Thanks
    Alan

Many of us are hoping Adobe enhances Lr to provide better support for custom metadata - as you've noticed, Lightroom is not one of those "Standard Adobe Applications" referred to in the above link.

  • Custom File Info panels from PS into LR

I have a large number of Custom File Info panels created for use within Photoshop that are imperative to our workflow of different departments. These Metadata strings are later read by Extensis Portfolio as our DAM tool of choice.
I don't see to be able to find where to change this other than making minor tweaks to existing Metadata presets. Any clues hmmm? Ta

  • How Do I remove all File Info after completeing image?

After completing all work on a Photoshop Image - then saving as a jpeg - all the file info still remains (XMP).  How do I delete it?

I appreciate your response and your effort to try to help me.  This is all stuff I know nothing about, so please bear with me.  I clicked on a picture I am ready to post on Behance – and chose “Save For Web”.  There is no  option to “Remove Metadata”.
There is a box entitled “Metadata:” – but choices are  “Copyright” – “Copyright and Contact Info” -  “All Except Camera Info” – “All”.
Is there any other way I could check to remove all the info I see when I open “File Info”?
And, what does all that stuff in the Metadata box mean?  I would love to look it up for myself – but have no idea where to go to find info about it.
    Please help and thank you.

  • Exporting File Info templates

I save templates of metadata and edit them in "File Info", however I can't export ( save) the new edited version, why?
My biggest client has several divisions that require different templates and occasional tweaks of the metadata in the "File info".
I work from Bridge, CS4, I had the same problem in CS3. Older versions allowed you to save over the old version of a template, why was that eliminated?

I have had a similar issue. The "Info" panel in PS CC 2014 seems to be an incomplete rewrite, & needs to be fixed.
The panel has a cosmetic remake and the convenient dropdown selection of XMP templates I had in prior versions of PS CS & CC are absent.
A template can only be imported for a single use, so the next time you want to use it, it hasn't actually been imported to be added to the drop down list as per the earlier PS editions.
I am using a Mac so to get to my templates for those single uses I follow this path:
    HD-->Users-->(me)-->Library--> Application Support-->Adobe-->XMP-->Metadata Templates
I cannot import the entire template folder, and I can only select a single XMP file. This is tedious  to say the least and is a bug which needs fixing. I have yet to find a workaround, and the Adobe support person I spoke to seems to have difficulty differentiating presets from templates.
So I am using PS CC 2014's Metadata info panel at a minimum for now, and I am making most of my metadata changes in Bridge or Lightroom 5 with previously built templates.
This is even more frustrating as Bridge CC has not been updated for CC 2014, Adobe support has told me that they are still working on a Bridge 2014 release, and Bridge CC is not fully compatible with PS 2014. For example Mini-Bridge is absent, as is Adobe Exchange. It seems that PS CC 2014 was not quite ready for primetime.

  • Good evening. When I try to rename a master file or export a master file, it only allows 9 spaces for my new name, even though Aperature 3 allows many more spaces than that for version names. This creates a lot of problems and headaches for me.

Good evening. When I try to rename a master file or export a master file, Aperature 3 only recognizes the first 9 spaces for raw .NEF files, even though it easily uses twice that many spaces for version names. I have a system in place that works really well for me, wherein by changing the file name I can recognize what's important to me just by glancing at the file name, no matter what system it is in, I do not have to open or mouse over anything to know what the file is. My files also arrange themselves in order no matter what file system they are in. Can someone please tell me if there is a setting, or something I am doing wrong, that prevents me from using a longer Master file name. I can't be the only person who would like to have his Master File names correspond to the name that appears in the Aperature library, and would like to use at least 16 spaces (numbers, letters, etc.)
    Thanks,
    Photo Al

    Hi Frank,
As you suggested, I am attaching several screen shots. In the first one you can see how I set up my preset. I used "Custom Name" and "Counter" with a dot between the two drag ins, followed by "D90". I also have a dot to seperate the 8 digits in the Custom Name and make it easier to read.
I then click "OK" which takes us to the second screen shot. Here you can see that in the Example File Name everything looks perfect, and you can see I have clicked on "Apply to Master Files".
In the third screen shot you can see that the version in my library did in fact change correctly. With the "mouse over" pop up screen you can see, however, that the Master File name was changed  to "1933.1017.NEF". It failed to carry the "12D90" and if I go to where my masters are stored that is exactly what the name was changed to.
In the fourth screen shot I attempt to export the master. You can see how my "Version Name" is set up.
And finally on the 5th screen shot you see in the File Name Example the name "1933.1017.NEF" once again, which when I export the master is exactly how the name will appear. Since I will export more than one file at a time , a (1) and  a (2)  etc., will appear at the end of the names because all the files are being given the same "1933.1017.NEF" name.
I hope this reply does a better job of clarifying my problem. I am anxious to see if this is something I simply misunderstood, or if I am simply doing something wrong.
    Thanks,

  • Multi-Artboard export to multi-file PDF

    Hey gang.
I have an Illustrator CS4 document with 51 artboards.  I would like to easily export each artboard to its own PDF file based on a PDF preset.  Currently when I do save as I can select the indivual artboard and it will only save the content on that artboard to a PDF file.  However I don't want to do that 51 times for each design file (100+ design files).
Any thoughts on how to export a single artboard in a multi-artboard document to a single PDF file for each artboard in the file?
    Cheers!
    Tom

Well I ended up writing something to solve this problem.  I hope this snippet helps somebody else stuck in a similar situation.  This applescript saves each artboard as its own PDF file based on a pdf preset and flattener preset.
    -- User configuration
set PDFPreset to " " ----------- YOUR PDF PRESETS HERE -------------
set PDFFlat to " " ----------- YOUR FLATTENER PRESETS HERE -------------
set DefaultLoc to " " ----------- YOUR DEFAULT SAVE LOCATION HERE -------------
    -- User configuration
    set theDesignName to " "
    set destFolder to " "
    set destFile to " "
    tell application "Adobe Illustrator"
if (count every document) > 0 then
if (count every document) > 1 then
display alert "Please have only 1 file open in Illustrator to perform this PDF export."
            else
-- what file is it and where do we want to export
display dialog "Please enter the desired export filename name:" default answer theDesignName
if button returned of result is "OK" then
set theDesignName to text returned of result as string
set destFolder to choose folder with prompt "Please select the folder to save " & theDesignName & " :" default location DefaultLoc
set numArtboardsPrintable to count every artboard in document 1
display dialog "Exporting " & numArtboardsPrintable & " individual files."
-- Export the artboards to individual PDF files with a PDF presets
repeat with incr from 1 to numArtboardsPrintable
                        set PDFExportSettings to {class:PDF save options, PDF preset:PDFPreset, view pdf:false, flattener preset:PDFFlat, artboard range:(incr)}
set destFile to destFolder & theDesignName & "-" & incr as string
save document 1 in file destFile as pdf with options PDFExportSettings
                    end repeat
                    display dialog "All done."
                end if
            end if
        else
display alert "Open a document before running this script"

  • Missing File Info when exporting to PDF

I am trying to export a PDF file from Freehand MX and even
all information is filled in FILE INFO, the information was
stripped out from the PDF file. Does someone know how to avoid it
and keep the metadata together with the PDF?

It's unrelated to the script you are using.
This has been discussed over and over in the general forum, but it boils down to:
If you have lots of images, there is no way you can have a small file AND good image quality. One of them has to suffer.
That said, you can inspect and possibly clean up your PDF withAcrobat Pro.

    Hi,
Though it is late, its better then never.
I had the same problem, but with a much smaller dump. In the end, I had to let Oracle specialists repair the file, since the server had crashed.
Now I am looking into it, to see if we can import exported files, and I ran into the same problem. But it seems to be parameter related, because without the direct=y parameter, it works correctly. Could it be you had the direct=y also ?
    Good luck,

  • How to create a custom panel in the right way (without having an empty panel in the file info) ?

    Hi Everyone
    My name is Daté.
I'm working in the fashion industry as a designer and Design consultant to help fashion brands improving the design workflow by using Adobe softwares and especially Illustrator.
I'm not a developper, but i'm very interested about the possibility to introduce xmp technology to provide more DAM workflows in the fashion industry.
Fashion designers produce a lot of graphical objects in illustrator or Photoshop. Unfortunately they are faced to a big challenge which is about how to manage, search, classify and get this files faster. Of course PDM system or PLM system are used in the Fashion industry to manage data, but for many companies, implemanting this kind of database is very complex.
When i look at what you can do with xmp, it seems to be an interesting way of managing design files, then i started to follow Adobe instruction to try to build a custom panel.
The main idea is to (Theory) :
create custom panels used by fashion designers to classify their design files.
Use Adobe Bridge to search files, create smart collection to make basic reports in pdf and slideshows
Find someone to make a script able to export metadata in xml files
Use indesign and the xml file to generate automatically catalogues or technical sheets based on xmp values
I have created a custom panel by using the generic panel provided by Adobe and i have modified the fields to feet with the terms used in the fashion industry and it works well.
But unfortunately, when i try to create my own custom panel from scratch with Flashbuilder (4.6) and the Adobe CSExtensionBuilder_2 (Trial version), it doesn't work!
    Here is the process :
    I have installed flashbuilder 4.6
I have download the XMP Fileinfo SDK 5.1 and placed the com.adobe.xmp.sdk.fileinfo_fb4_1.1.0.jar in C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Flash Builder 4.6\eclipse\plugins
In Flashbuilder, i have created a new project and select xmp Custom panel
The new project is created in flashbuilder with a field with A BASIC Description Field
To generate the panel, right click the project folder and select xmp / Publish Custom Panel
The panel is automatically generated in the following folder : C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\XMP\custom file info panels\3.0\panels
Go to illustrator, Open the file Info
    The panel appears empty
The others panel are also empty
The panel is created and automatically placed in the right folder, but when you open it in Illustrator by selecting the File Info option in the File Menu, this custom panel appears empty!!! (only the title of the tab is displayed). This panel also prevent the other panels to be displayed.
When you delete this custom panels from the folder C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\XMP\custom file info panels\3.0\panels and go back to the File Info, the other panels display their content properly.
I also try to use the plugin XMP Namespace designer to create my own namespace. this plugin is also able to generate a custom panel, but this one also appears empty in AI or Photoshop.
I try to follow the process described in Adobe xmp documentation many times, but it didn't works.
It seems that many peaople have this issue, but i dodn't find a solution in the forum.
I try to create a trust file (cfg), but it didn't work.
It would be so kind if you can help me to understand why i can't create a custom panel normally and how to do it in the right way.
Thanks a lot for your help,
    Best regards,
    Daté

    Hi Sunil,
After many trial, i realize the problem was not coming from the trust file, but from the way i have created the custom panel.
There is 2 different ways, the first described below is not working whereas the second is fine :
    METHOD 1 :
    I have downloaded the XMP-Fileinfo-SDK-CS6
In the XMP-Fileinfo-SDK-CS6 folder, i copied the com.adobe.xmp.sdk.fileinfo_fb4x_1.2.0.jar plugin from the Tools folder and i pasted it in the plugind folder of Flashbuilder 4.6
The plugin install an XMP project
In Flashbuilder 4.6 i have created a new project (File / New /Project /XMP/XMP Custom Panel)
A new xmp project is created in flashbuilder.
You can publish this project by right clicking the root folder and selecting XMP / Publish Custom Panel
The custom file info panel is automatically published in the right location which is on Mac : /Users/UserName/Library/Application Support/Adobe/XMP/Custom File Info Panels/3.0 or /Users/UserName/Library/Application Support/Adobe/XMP/Custom File Info Panels/4.0
Despite the publication of the custom file info panel and the creation of a trust file in the following location : "/Library/Application Support/Macromedia/FlashPlayerTrust", the panel is blank in Illustrator.
I try this way several times, with no good results.
    METHOD 2 :
I have installed Adobe CSExtensionBuilder 2.1 in Flash Builder
In FlashBuilder i have created a new project (File / New /Project /Adobe Creative Suite Extension Builder/XMP Fileinfo Panel Project)
As the system display a warning about the version of the sdk to use to create correctly a custom file info, I changed the sdk to sdk3.5A
The warning message is : "XMP FileInfo Panel Projects must be built with Flex 3.3, 3.4 or 3.5 SDK. Building with Flex 4.6.0 SDK may result in runtime errors"
When i publish this File info panel project (right click the root folder and select Run as / Adobe illustrator), the panel is published correctly.
The last step is to create the trust file to display the fields in the panel and everything is working fine in Illustrator.
The second method seems to be the right way.
For sure something is missing in the first method, and i don't understand the difference between the XMP Custom Panel Project and the XMP Fileinfo Panel Project. Maybe you can explain it to me.
So what is the best solution ? the right sdk to use acording to the creative suite (the system asks to use 3.3 or 3.5 sdk for custom panels, so why ?)
I'm agree with Pedro, a step by step tutorial about this will help a lot of peaople, because it's not so easy to understand!!!
Sunil, as you belong to the staff team, can you tell me if there is  :
A plugin or a software capable to extract the XMP from llustrator files to generate XML workflows in Indesign to create catalogues
A plugin to allow indesign to get custom XMP in live caption
A plugin to allow Bridge to get custom XMP in the Outputmode to make pdf or web galeries from a smart collection
How can you print the XMP data with the thumbnail of the file ?
Thanks a lot for your reply.
    Best Regards
    Daté

    Hi Barbara
Are your photos in iPhoto or are you using some other Photo Software?
The latest version of iPhoto is a lot different than iPhoto 6 for example. In iPhoto 06 you could burn the Originals from your User Picture Folder using Finder, while in iPhoto 11 it is best to burn them from within the iPhoto Application.
Open iPhoto and select the Event(s) that you want to burn onto the CD, then select Share on the menu bar and click Burn in the drop down.

Then again, maybe you got a bad batch of blank CD's and need to try another?
