A new Apple owner

Hello all,
i am now part of the Apple world and loving it so far. The change from Android was big but not big enough to scare me off.
I succesfully unlocked the carrier lock from O2 so I am happily using the Iphone 4 with my Orange sim. I now have a few questions and I wonder if you can help me.
1) I have several pairs of earphones and even an external wired speaker that all connect to the headphone jack. Its standard size but not one of these items actually fit the Iphone 4 headphone jack. Bit weird as it looks as though the jack is the same size as any other?
2) In the excitement of getting the phone a few weeks ago I tried to get a head start on setting up Icloud stuff. problem was my first attempt I mis spelt the domain address so it read @outpook.com instead of outlook.. and my second attempt was adding part of my name twice so each email address was incorrect and in no way valid (at this point I was clearly new to the Apple keyboard) now because the phone was second hand some one had obviously used the Icloud backup feature. I am now faced with being unable to use Icloud because it claims that maximum account numbers have been reached and cannot set it up.
this is both frustrating and stupid that I cannot simply backup my phone and then use the find my phone feather of I cloud. It states I cannot log in online because I have not set it up with my phone, well I cannot set it up with my phone because of the limitation! What can I do? Can I contact Apple to delete the two accounts from my device? Surely there must be a way?!

An update, I have managed to get around this, I factory reset my phone having backed up with Icloud and setting up my Icloud email account including Find my phone.
(I was surprised the time to setup again was very fast! On Android it would have taken two hours or a little less to get back up and running again but this process took 45-60 minutes tops!)
I setup my Iphone using the "As a new Iphone" option and this time entered by Icloud email address as the account to activate and use and this worked perfectly. Beforehand I set up a dummy Gmail account with the misspelt name and setup Icloud on the device. Now though I dont need to worry because it uses the Icloud email account as the default Icloud setup. It no longer complains about the maximum accounts used on the device as I am now using the Icloud account for the backup etc.
Everything is now running as I had wished in the first place!
Regarding the headphone jack i am not going to bother with it, I will track down my ancient Ipod and use that for music instead and focus my iphones use for pictures and the odd video along with the usual apps etc.

• New Apple Owner...how to recognize if you have a "Whiner"?

This is my 1st Apple so I'm very curious as to how one that has never owned an Apple can tell if their MacBook Pro is a "whiner" ....once I booted up the notebook for the 1st time I noticed that the new firmware was loaded onto the computer (noticed some of you referenced that that may have contained a solution)...
...your thoughts...?
Keith
regarding the whine, I see this from time to whine. (sorry) ... basically, here is what I note.. most do whine lightly under low load... some louder than others.... the whine sometime disappears.... I would (if you get another that has a whine) relax and run quiet macbookpro or open photobooth for a month or two... then address the issue.. here is why.... wen you run XP.... MBPs are silent..... did you get that.. the software can correct the whine.. it is a power managment issue... apple is balming hardware.... but it is a hardware issue.. they WILL get it ironed out and then some day in the near future you will get a software update and whamo.... no whine
i would not send mine in if it whined and I would advise anyone that has a whiner to install XP.. see if it whines.... it won't.. call apple and tell the tech when you report the issue... if you send a report to apple using the software in your computer..... mention that XP's power managment does a better job on their hardware than they do....
lastly, i want to point out that intel has noted the noise issue when the processor is idle..and has a driver for the core duo that is newer than bootcamps... additionally, XPSP2 has a specific update for the core duo's power regulation you can download from MS.... they have more experience working on this hardware.. it makes sense they would have it figureed out a bit...
ok... really lastly, why am I the only one I ever hear that is completely convinced it is a software issue? I mean.. has ANYONE ever had a MBP that whined (not the screen noise reported) when running XP????
anyone....
WHY IS APPLE NOT ADDRESSING IT THAT WAY????
*sorry to shout.. just hoping somebody at apple reads the thread and pays attention*
• How do i create a new Apple ID, when it was being used by someone else?

I am VERY i phone/ computer illederate. I am on my pc, with my sons old (we traded, he wanted my samsung 3) i phone. i cannot do anything, eg. new apps, etc because it comes up with his e mail and asks for password which he forgot. So i went to Verizon and they got me to the pg "create a new apple id" I did everything it asked..then when i got home, thinking i did everythin and I WOULD BE THE NEW "OWNER"...nope. It STILL had his e mail and asked for long ago forgotten password. But i want my username&password. He suggested i go to Apple support, so here i am, HELP!

VERY helpful email response!
Thank you for contacting AppleCert. I'm happy to help you activate your ACRS account.
Some Apple ID types are ineligible for use with ACRS. For example, you can not use a personal, customer Apple ID or an @me.com, @mac.com, or @icloud.com email address.
In this case, the Apple ID [email protected] is not eligible. However, this email address could be released from its current ID and used for ACRS instead.
If you would like to update the Apple ID account for  [email protected] and free up the email address, please follow these steps:
1. Visit https://appleid.apple.com
2. Click Manage your account and sign in with the Apple ID you want to change.
3. Click "Edit" beside the email address
4. Enter a new email address
5. Click "Save Changes"
This will change both the Apple ID and email address to the new email address and free up the address you wish to use. Note, this change will affect all applications and services for which you currently use this ID.
For additional assistance please visit http://www.apple.com/support/appleid/
If you do not wish to modify this Apple ID, please reply with an alternate email address. (Do not attempt to register a new Apple ID.) We will verify the alternate address's eligibility and provide the steps to register it as an appropriate Apple ID.
We look forward to your reply with either an alternate email address or information that your Apple ID has been modified.

I participated in getting the free download of Mountain Lion for new Mac owners. It took me three days to finally get a code to do it and when I tried downloading it, the estimated time was 74 days 17 hours. Now an error occurred. What do I do? I am very frustrated and just want the great software to download in a resonalbe time!

Take your Mac to a location with a fast, relaible Internet connection that will be all yours during the duration of the download.
If you want to complain, PLEASE call Apple and do so.
Internet only downloads of OS X is completely stupid, it assumes everyone has reliable Internet everywhere and /or no data caps.

I am a new mac owner & want to purchase Office for Mac.  Thought I was told I could get it through the mac store for approx. $80 (word, excel, powerpoint).  However, it looks like the cost is actually $150.  Is there a better deal?

Here it is from a trusted vendor of Mac goodies for US$100:
Microsoft Office 2011 Mac: Home/Student Edition. Single User License.
I also see the Mac version offered about every other week at Staples for about the same price.
Understand that the 2011 "Home/Student" edition does not come with a mail client.MS dropped Entourage with the 2011 version.
I am running Office 2008 on a Late 2010  i7 Quad iMac and a Core 2 Duo MBP (both are at OS 10.6.8) and I have no complaints. If you want the Entourage Mail client, you can still get Office 2008 from the vendor I linked.
I wonder if someone quoted the US$80 price thinking of Apple iWorks.

• New e-mail address, so created new apple id, iTunes store asks for password for old e-mail/apple id

There are lots of posts on this subject over the years about this problem but none of the solutions work for me.
Apple id problems go back many years, if they cant handle that, how do we trust them in security issues?
anyway, here is what it says.
Sign into iTunes store
Enter the Apple ID password for
"old e-mail address"
So I enter the password (same one as before, it works in Mail etc on the iPad, only a problem on iTunes store.
App updates would not work, but they finally did when I did a iPad reset and backup restore.
But the iTunes store apple id problem is still there.
I am a user of Apple since 1982, do not like where things are going, honestly, but they are the only game in town. Not a fan of overly automated system processes with no feeling of "transparency" in the way things happen these days.
Can anyone help?  If not I will live with it, but..........this is not the old Apple any more.

It may not be called Express lane any longer, but this is where you find it now: https://getsupport.apple.com/GetproductgroupList.action
On your old email - Apple does not assume an email will not change. This is why they provide for recovery if you no longer have access to the email. In order for that to work however, you needed to have followed their recommendation and set up your security questions and/or provided a secondary email address. If you not longer have access, they you can try calling Apple and asking for the Account Security Team. If you can convince them you are who you say you are, they may be able to help reset your password.
Are you saying iTunes on your computer is updating all Apps? If so, I don't understand how. Apps purchased on your old Apple ID are able to be updated only using the Apple ID used to purchase or download them. If what you ar esaying is true, I suspect only thos apps tied to your new Apple ID are being checked and updated. If it is happening as you describe, your iPad is the one behaving as it should, not iTunes on your computer.
Please do not take offence to this but it still seems as if you don't understand how the Apple ID works, not just that you don't agree with it. I've refined my analogy a bit, so please bear with me. I am not trying to be condesending but I HAVE tried to made it as simple as possible for anyone else that may read this.
Imagine you buy a house. You have keys to the house and once inside, you buy all the funrniture you need - with one condition - because of some complicated distribution agreements with the furniture manufacturers, the seller mandates that the furniture you buy must be used only in that house.
Some day in the future, you lose the keys to your house so you buy the house next door with its own new set of keys. You go inside the new house and wonder where all your furniture has gone. Simply, you own both houses but
Upset at this situation, you try to recover your keys to your first house by asking the bank to mail them. You once had the chance to give the bank an alternate address to which they could mail keys but didn't so not they can only mail them to the first house. Since you can't get inside, you cannot retrieve the new keys that they send.
After getting some good advice, you decide to talk to visit the bank personally. You convince them you are the owner of house #1 and they give you a new set of keys. Yay!
You go back to house #1 and finally manage to get in. But, since house #2 is newer, you decide to live there. Now you want to move your furniture so you have a comfortable place to sit and sleep. Oops, you can't take the furniture from the old house because of your agreement with the Furniture seller so you have to buy new furniture.
House = Apple ID
Keys = Password
Furniture = Apps and other content purchased with the first Apple ID
Keys = Password
Alternate Address = Alternate Email Address
Furniture Seller = Apple
Furniture Makers = App Developers, Film and Music Rights Holders
You may not agree with this, but the fact is, Apple owns very little of the content they sell - basically only their own apps and iOS itself. Allowing merging of Apple IDs or transfering ownership of Apps from one Apple ID to another is a logistical nightmare and would create major issues with app developers, music and film rights holders and anyone else who provides content for sale through iTunes or the App Store.
You cannot compare a functioning iCloud with non-functioning iTunes and App Stores. iCloud doesn't care about your apps - it's about syncing and identification (iMessage, Facetime, iCloud services like Find My iDevice) only. So long as you are using the same Apple ID on each device, it will sync between them any supported content you decide. In fact you can use a different Apple ID for all there if you wanted. The key is to be CONSISTENT.
One additional thing we have not brought up already. If the iPad was activated with your original Apple ID and you ever need to restore it (not an uncommon possibility), you will run into a problem with Activation Lock. It's a security feature designed to discourage iDevice theft by rendering it useless if one tries to activate it using anything other than the Apple ID used to activate it originally.
Again, you may not agree with how it works, but I hope this finally makes sense and you at least understand how it works.

Congratulations on your investment in a Mac. You're life is truly about to be very simplified. You're going to love your new iBook. I know I do! People always contemplate Mac as being a great platform or not but it usually comes down to the gaming aspect. Silly gamers!. lol... use a PS2 or Xbox or something.. just dont use Microsoft for computing, its unneccessarily complicated yet still so many people adore confusion, WHY?!?

Email messages and settings
If you use a web-based email service to view and send email, such as Yahoo! Mail or Google’s Gmail, then you won’t need to copy your email or email settings to your new Mac. You can continue using web-based email with our Safari Internet browser.
However, if your email is managed by a separate application like Outlook or Eudora, then you will probably want to migrate your old mail to your new Mac. Different email programs use different methods of storing messages. We’ve collected some useful links to help.
Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express use a proprietary format for storing messages. Microsoft’s web site has a tutorial on how to transfer email files. Or you could invest $10 in Little Machines’ Outlook2Mac, which is compatible with Microsoft Outlook only, not Outlook Express.
Eudora, Netscape Mail or other mbox-based mail application use a standard mail format. Read this article for information.
You should also make note of your existing email settings. Later, when first using your new Mac, you’ll use this information to set up email. Open your email application, find the “Accounts” area, and write down the following information about your existing email setup:
Account type: POP or IMAP
Email address
Incoming mail server
Outgoing mail server
User name and password
Hope this helps. If you have any questions about your Mac from setup to maintenance to upgrades, let our community of Apple discussion contributors assist you. We know Macs great and are always ready to help as best we can. Good luck and thank you for making the intelligent switch to Apple.

I purchased 2 large bags of cell phones at a surplus/lost and found auction. The owner of this phone lost it, and didn't pick it up at the lost and found within 90 days and the phone was put up at auction. By law I am the new legal owner of the phone. The person who lost it locked their phone but didn't bother going to look for it. Not my problem. I went to the Apple store with my auction receipt and they said they still can't erase the old owner's account from the phone, and I need their receipt and their permission. There has to be some way around that. I legally purchased it after they lost it and neglected to pick it up within the time frame the law gave them to pick it up. Basically the Apple Store employee told me I was **** out of luck and the phone is basically garbage.

You were correctly informed. You are the new, legal owner of a beautiful paper weight. There is no way around it. This is a security protection to prevent people who steal them from getting value from the stolen item.

• Previous account was hacked (fixed), but iCloud won't update to new Apple ID.

Hello,
A couple of days ago my email was hacked. All of my information including my password was changed for many websites (Itunes). I have created a new Apple ID but cannot access iCould on my IPhone device because i do not have the password. Please help.

Hello kenchiwo,
honestly spoken, no, I don't think that the box is enough for them to prove that you are the owner, but I would give it a try, because there is not much to loose.
Best regards.

• New administrator/owner

Hi
this is probably a dumb question, but here goes; I currently have a G4 iMac running 10.2.8 which I'm about to give my wife (I'm getting a new G5iMac). If she buys a copy of Tiger and does a clean install (wipes out my stuff) will the G4 automatically recognise her as the new administrator/owner? We don't need to share her iMac.
thanks

G4 iMac   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Ian:
Doing a clean install or erase and install is pretty radical and intrusive if all you want to do is to set up a new admin account.
If you don't need to wipe the disk clean before setting up the account here's how to do it.
Go to the Apple Menu > System Preferences> Accounts. Click on Accounts.
Click the under Login Options to add an account.
Check the box to let that user "Allow User to administer this computer." You are now creating a second admin account. Be sure you give it a good password and that you remember it!
Log out by going to the Apple Menu and select Logout whoever at the very bottom of the list.
Go back to System Preferences > Accounts, and find your original user.
Uncheck the box for that account that allows it to administer the computer. You've now changed your regular account into a Standard user account.
If you want to delete the old account select it and click on the under Login Options. You will be asked if you want to delete it completely or save the user folder. Make you choice and proceed.
You can now archive and install or upgrade to Tiger.
The computer's shortname will remain the same, but that can be changed, too. For now you need to decide how you want to go about setting up the new admin account.
Good luck.

• Phone wiped, new Apple ID - How to transfer apps, etc.

I gave my daughter my iPhone a short time ago. She used my Apple ID to get apps, etc.
We are having problems with the phone now (Wifi not working) so I did a complete wipe on the phone, set up a new Apple ID for her and are setting the phone back up.
At this point, we cannot get any of the apps to sync or to update because iTunes is complaining that she did not purchase the Apps.
How can I transfer all the information from my old Apple ID to her new Apple ID?
I did try to edit the email address on the old Apple ID, but I've already created her new Apple ID and iTunes won't let me change it.
At this point, how can I set up iTunes properly to...
- Use my daughters new Apple ID
- Have all the old Apps, contacts, etc. that she had when she used my old Apple ID
- Authorize content on her computer and my computer (I believe my old ID has 4 computers authorized for some reason)
Thanks!!!

Apps are forever tied to the AppleID that purchased them.  That's how the rightful owner is identified and theft is prevented.

• I'm a new proud owner of an iMac 21.5

Hello, I'm a new proud owner of an iMac 21.5. Formerly G5 owner who frequently visited the
Power Mac forums. Due to finances it took a while to move on to a better computer and I was having so many issues w/my G5 that I couldn't stand to deal w/it anymore after several fixes resulting in more hassle.
So now, moving on I plan to take much better care of this baby and check up on any issues resulting from downloading, updating, n general maintenance.
I took it out of the box and have already updated to 10.6.3
So now what, (I'm seeing a huge list of software updates from the drop down menu)...

The only advantage to doing updates from Apple's website is if you have skipped multiple updates on the OS itself, in this case you would use the Combo update. For example if you got Snow Leopard which is 10.6 and skipped updates to 10.6.1 and 10.6.2 but wanted to go to 10.6. In that case you would download the 10.6.3 Combo update. The Combo update is recommended in this case because it includes information from 10.6.1 & 10.6.2. BTW it isn't necessary to do a Permissions Repair with every update, however it won't do any harm either. The only time it's really recommended when doing updates is if it's an update to the OS itself for example an update from 10.6.2 to 10.6.3, on other updates it's probably a waste of time.
If you follow Software Update you won't have any problems, just check it weekly, follow any update instructions and your system will run smoothly.
